Tennessee hires former Georgia defensive coordinator

The Tennessee Volunteers have hired former Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator Willie Martinez as their defensive backs coach

The Tennessee Volunteers have hired former Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator Willie Martinez to be their defensive backs coach.

Martinez previously coached at the University of Georgia from 2001-2009. He spent the first few seasons in Athens as a secondary coach before being promoted to defensive coordinator.

Willie Martinez brings Tennessee a wealth of experience. He’s previously been a secondary coach for Georgia, Oklahoma, Auburn, Tennessee, Cincinnati, UCF, and more.

The former Georgia Bulldogs defensive coordinator was previously coaching under new Tennessee head Josh Heupel during his time with the UCF Knights. Martinez hasn’t been a defensive coordinator since leaving the University of Georgia.

Pete Thamel of Yahoo reported the hiring of Willie Martinez:

Willie Martinez and the Tennessee Volunteers are set to return to Athens to face the Georgia Bulldogs in 2022. Will Tennessee be able to shrink the gap between them and the top teams in the SEC East?

UT alum Albert Haynesworth calls Tennessee football out for ‘systematic racism’

Tennessee alum Albert Haynesworth wrote a very critical rundown of his thoughts on Tennessee’s coaching hires in a post on Facebook.

Tennessee football is in the middle of a mess.

With NCAA sanctions looming, Tennessee fired head coach Jeremy Pruitt, along with nine other staff he hired, while athletic director Phillip Fulmer, the man who brought in Pruitt, retired.

The Volunteers answered by hiring UCF athletic director Danny White and UCF head coach Josh Heupel to the same roles in Knoxville. The two spent the last three years together before making the move.

Tennessee alum Albert Haynesworth, a 2002 first-round pick who spent nine seasons in the NFL, wrote a very critical rundown of his thoughts on Tennessee’s hire in a post on Facebook.

“BOYCOTT TENNESSEE FOR SYSTEMATIC RACISM!!!!!

“Obviously Tennessee Vols take Tee Martin for granted! Why do s–t on him, hell he even reduce his salary to help the university out when he didn’t have to? Is it bc he’s black? UT won’t even interview him. I bring race into it bc UT has passed over good qualified black coaches like Kippy Brown and others in these past coaching searches. Majority of your players are African-American why not put a African-American coach to lead them especially the one that won Tennessee a championship? You guys give everyone except a black qualified man a chance! With this said I will not be attending any games or supporting until I see change in the university that I love so much! I hope my fellow black Tennessee alumnus will follow me in boycotting the university in showing how serious we are about not feeling the equality for our fellow qualified black coaches!!!”

The former All-Pro defensive tackle called Tennessee out for not hiring UT legend Tee Martin, who quarterbacked the Volunteers to a national title in 1998 and was hired in 2019 to serve on Pruitt’s staff as associate head coach and receivers coach.

On the surface, it seems as if Tennessee has an out here. With NCAA sanctions coming, it is understandable the Volunteers would axe the entire staff, but we’ll know much more about the situation after the sanctions are announced.

This week former Bulldogs Brandon Boykin and Chris Burnette joined UGA Football Live with J.C. Shelton to talk Dawgs, their new podcast and more! Listen here for lots of laughs!

ESPN ranks the top quarterback-coach duos in college football

Texas’ Tom Herman and Sam Ehlinger were listed among the top quarterback-coach combos in college football.

One oftentimes makes the other better.

While a talented quarterback can lessen the strain on an unproven coach, the same is true with a knowledgeable coach and an under-the-radar quarterback. If you’re really fortunate, you have the best of both worlds.

ESPN staff writer David Hale recently ranked the top quarterback-coach combos in college football. The rankings were separated into different groupings, but the top three appear to be nobrainers.

  1. Clemson’s Dabo Swinney and Trevor Lawrence
  2. Ohio State’s Ryan Day and Justin Fields
  3. Texas’ Tom Herman and Sam Ehlinger
  4. Minnesota’s P.J. Fleck and Tanner Morgan
  5. Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher and Kellen Mond

Herman has been fortunate to have a talented signal caller in Ehlinger since he’s been the head coach at the University of Texas. When Ehlinger enters the NFL Draft after this season, Herman will be put to the test. Fortunately, he’s been recruiting well at the position.

“After Vince Young and Colt McCoy made Texas a QB haven in the previous decade, the Longhorns’ offense disappeared from 2010 through 2017 as the team cycled through both coaches and quarterbacks. But the marriage between Herman and Ehlinger has revived the fireworks in Austin, and their offensive success over the past two years — 80 total TDs, 8,100 yards — is on par with anything Young or McCoy produced in their heyday.”

There’s no doubt that the Longhorns duo shows up against nationally-ranked competition. Herman has won the last three major bowl games that he’s coached in, while Ehlinger showcases his best performances under the spotlight.

Ehlinger enters his senior season as a Heisman trophy contender, but Herman’s revamped coaching staff must put it all together in order for this young Texas team to succeed as a whole.

Former Texas quarterback Shane Buechele appeared on the list under the castoffs who found the perfect home. Buechele transferred to Southern Methodist University after it was clear that Ehlinger had won the starting job. He was the perfect match for head coach Sonny Dykes, the duo provided SMU with its first 10-win season since 1984.

The safest gamble was awarded to Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley and Spencer Rattler. Riley has an incredible offensive mind and he’ll be working with the top-ranked quarterback recruit from the 2019 class.
