Big 12 launches Big 12 Mexico; looks to play exhibitions and more south of the border

The Big 12 on Thursday launched their new initiative, Big 12 Mexico as they look to grow their footprint into the country.

On Thursday, the Big 12 conference announced the launching of Big 12 Mexico.

Big 12 Mexico is being described as “the Conference’s first international extension that will see Big 12 men’s and women’s basketball, women’s soccer, and baseball games held in Mexico”.

Also a part of the initiative is the potential launching of a college football bowl game that would be played in Monterrey, starting in 2026.

“Mexico is a natural extension to the Big 12 footprint, and I’m thrilled to introduce Big 12 Mexico as the Conference’s first-ever international presence,” Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark said in the press release. Through Big 12 Mexico, our student-athletes will have the opportunity to compete in an international setting, and our Conference will have the chance to showcase our brand across Mexico.”

As part of the initiative, the Big 12 will see Kansas and one of their newest universities, Houston, face off in Mexico City at Arena CDMX in December of 2024 in both men’s and women’s basketball. There are also plans wot have women’s soccer and baseball exhibitions against clubs from within the region.

The launch of Big 12 Mexico will be assisted by both Fox Sports and ESPN who will use their ESPN Deportes, ESPN Mexico, ESPN on Star+, and Fox Deportes channels to air various Big 12 football and basketball games. The conference plans to continue to expand its media strategy in Meixco over the upcoming years as well.

The conference also notes that there will be a “community outreach programming, commercial partnerships, merchandise, and activations,” as part of the initiative.

As the Big 12 expands its footprint into Mexico, the conference is also looking to expand its footprint within the United States. The conference has been in talks with various universities such as Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, and others to potentially join the conference.

Around the Big 12: Where does Texas Tech go from here, TCU’s Zach Evans rumors

It’s been a wild week in the Big 12.

Stay up to date with the latest happenings surrounding Big 12 athletics.

Where does Texas Tech go from here?

It’s never easy losing your head coach in the middle of the season, but after what transpired on Saturday against Kansas State, it’s understandable why the school felt it was time for a change. Sonny Cumbie will now have the opportunity to interview for the job in the next four weeks. The list of candidates include former Texas assistant Jeff Traylor and the son of Texas Tech coaching legend, Sonny Dykes.

As far as the product on the field, the team still has an opportunity to get to the postseason, although the task is tall. Tech has Oklahoma, Iowa State, Baylor, and Oklahoma State remaining on the schedule. They are playing with house money, can they do the unthinkable and pull off an upset?

Rumors surrounding TCU running back Zach Evans

Rumors continue to circulate on social media regarding Zach Evans future with the TCU Horned Frogs. Most of the speculation has centered around the star running back potentially leaving the program, but Dallas Morning News’ Drew Davison rebutted those rumors by stating Evans was at practice yesterday and “all is good.”

However, Evans removed any sign of TCU from his Instagram page on Wednesday. This is shaping up to be a situation worth monitoring.

No fine will be issued for Iowa State after fans stormed the field

Iowa State fans celebrated the Oklahoma State victory by storming the field at Jack Trice Stadium last week. According to Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby, the school will not be fined or reprimanded.

I have concluded my review of the field storming incident that occurred at the conclusion of Saturday’s Oklahoma State at Iowa State football game.  Although no action by the Conference is being taken, I am using this opportunity to express my concern that, although improvements have been made, more needs to be done to ensure a safer exit from the field for the opposing team and game officials.

I know that the ISU administration is committed to providing the safest possible environment. I strongly urge that this experience be used to further consider steps that may be taken to ensure safety for all concerned.

Tuesday Big 12 Morning Rush

The latest news surrounding the Big 12 involve a COVID-19 postponement in men’s basketball as well as several coaching updates within the Texas and Oklahoma football programs.

No. 2 Baylor vs. No. 13 West Virginia postponed

CBS Sports reported on Monday that Tuesday night’s Baylor vs. West Virginia game has been postponed due to COVID-19 issues for the Mountaineers. This is important to keep an eye on as Texas recently traveled to Morgantown to battle West Virginia three days ago.

Cornerbacks coach Jay Valai tweets goodbye to Texas players

Newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian is expected to finalize his support staff in the coming days. Although the defensive coordinator has yet to be announced, a few names have already been reported to join Texas’ defensive staff. You’d have to assume that Sarkisian has someone in place for that role if other position coaches have been agreed upon.

It’s looking more and more likely that we will see an entirely new defensive staff in Austin under Sarkisian. Valai confirmed that he wouldn’t be returning to Texas on Monday.

Lincoln Riley rumored to be a target for Philadelphia Eagles job

It’s possible that Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley could be headed to the NFL. Shortly after the Philadelphia Eagles parted ways with head coach Doug Pederson on Monday, Riley was instantly linked as their top target.

It would likely take a hefty amount of money to lure Riley away from Oklahoma, but it’s certainly possible that it could come to fruition considering his strong relationship with Eagles general manager Howie Roseman.
