Josh Giddey, Tre Mann out again for Thunder’s game vs. Pacers

Thunder rookies Josh Giddey and Tre Mann are out against the Pacers on Saturday.

The Oklahoma City Thunder’s two top draft picks will be out again when they take on the Indiana Pacers on Saturday evening.

No. 6 overall pick Josh Giddey and No. 18 pick Tre Mann will not play. Giddey suffered an ankle sprain in the first game and has only seen five minutes of court time in summer league. Mann departed the team for personal reasons before the third game.

Summer league head coach Grant Gibbs joins them as inactive. Gibbs is away from the team due to COVID-19 protocol.

The Thunder were coached in the game on Friday night by Kameron Woods.

Oklahoma City is 1-2 so far in summer league. The Thunder beat the Detroit Pistons in the opener but lost to the New Orleans Pelicans and Golden State Warriors in consecutive games.

They will try to pull their record to .500 against the Pacers on Saturday. Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. Central time.

Thunder rookie Tre Mann out for rest of summer league

Tre Mann will miss the remainder of summer league for personal reasons, the OKC Thunder announced.

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Tre Mann will miss the remainder of summer league, the team announced on Thursday.

The Florida guard is out for personal reasons, according to the Thunder. No other information was provided.

Mann had six points on 3-for-14 shooting against the Detroit Pistons in the summer league opener and posted 12 points on 4-for-15 shooting against the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night. He missed all six 3-pointers he attempted over the two contests.

Mann was selected with the No. 18 pick in the NBA draft. He is expected to become a part of the guard rotation as a shooting option.

As a sophomore at Florida, the 6-foot-5 guard averaged 16.0 points per game and shot 40.2% from 3 on 4.7 attempts per game.

Now that Mann is out, the Thunder may be down both first-round draft picks in the immediate future. Josh Giddey, the No. 6 overall pick in the draft, missed the game against the Pelicans after spraining an ankle five minutes into the first game of summer league.

Thunder rookie Tre Mann to miss rest of Las Vegas Summer League

Mann averaged nine points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, one steal and one blocked shot in two summer league games.

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Tre Mann will miss the remainder of the Las Vegas Summer League due to a personal matter, the team announced on Thursday.

Mann, who was the 18th pick, averaged nine points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists, one steal and one blocked shot in two summer league games. He recorded six points in his debut on Sunday and followed with 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-4 guard was named to the All-SEC first team last season after averaging 16 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.4 steals at Florida. He emerged as a strong shooter in college and believes he is the best off of the catch or dribble.

Mann was one of four rookie players the Thunder added in the NBA draft. He joined Josh Giddey (No. 6), Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (32) and Aaron Wiggins (No. 55). The Thunder entered the draft with three first-round picks but opted to trade No. 16 to the Houston Rockets.

Anonymous college basketball coach is a fan of the Tre Mann pick

Former Florida point guard Tre Mann is heading to Oklahoma City, and an anonymous college basketball coach is a big fan of the pick.

Florida point guard Tre Mann ended a drought of Gators first-round picks in the NBA draft that dated back to 2012. Mann’s selection by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 18th overall pick also made him UF’s first drafted player, period, since Erik Murphy in 2013.

With most projections showing Mann in the early-mid 20s, he heard his name called a bit earlier than most expected. And though his skill set may not exactly translate to a starting-caliber guard, he has enough versatility for one anonymous college basketball coach to be a big fan of the signing, per a report from ESPN.

“He could be a really, really good pick,” the coach said. “He has Kyrie Irving-esque handle. I know that’s blasphemous, but it’s his finishing package, his handle, his creativity.”

Mann’s ball-handling is definitely a major reason why he was so successful slashing toward the basket last season, and though he’s considered a potential combo guard, he may see most of his reps at point for that reason.

He was one of seven SEC players to go in the first round, and the only one of those seven that wasn’t a one-and-done. It’s clear the league is gaining in stature, and coaching is likely a major reason why.

“It’s a testament to the players, but it starts from the leadership up top,” one SEC coach said. “Athletic departments making basketball a priority. The SEC is seen as a football conference, but you look up and down the league, whether it’s [Rick] Barnes, [Eric] Musselman, [John] Calipari, Nate Oats — the coaching in the league, you can put up against any league in the country. The combination of leadership and coaching is a huge, huge part of why the league has been able to take such a big jump.”

Mann wasn’t the only Florida player selected on Thursday night. He was joined by Scottie Lewis, who was taken with the 56th pick in the second round by the Charlotte Hornets. His selection came as a bit of a surprise, as many thought he would go undrafted.

In Oklahoma City, he likely won’t outcompete Kemba Walker and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for starting reps, at least not any time soon. However, the depth behind those two consists of Theo Maledon, Luguentz Dort and 2021 sixth overall pick Josh Giddey. Mann may struggle to see time as a rookie, but he could eventually develop a role off the bench with the Thunder.

Thunder draft another guard, take Tre Mann with No. 18

The Thunder drafted another guard, taking Florida sophomore Tre Mann with the 18th pick in the 2021 draft.

After trading pick No. 16, the Oklahoma City Thunder used the 18th pick to take their second guard of the draft: Florida sophomore Tre Mann.

Mann broke out this past season, averaging 16.0 points while shooting 40.2% from 3 on 4.7 attempts per game. That shooting is much-needed for this Oklahoma City squad, which was one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the league last season.

The Florida guard also averaged 5.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game.

By growing two inches and putting up those stats, Mann’s stock shot up. The Thunder see him as a player who can be a shooter and good ball handler in the NBA.

However, he measured a height of 6-foot-4.25 in shoes at the draft combine, according to Gator County, and has a 6-foot-4 wingspan. His Florida bio listed him at 6-foot-5.

Mann joins a crowded group at guard. He and No. 6 overall pick Josh Giddey will be part of a group that has Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Theo Maledon and Ty Jerome, all of whom appear to have parts on the team for at least the next couple years. All-Star guard Kemba Walker is on the team and would start if he remains during the season, but the Thunder are reportedly trying to trade him after acquiring him from the Boston Celtics this offseason.

Oklahoma City currently holds no more picks in the first round, but they do have selections No. 34, 36 and 55. The team may be able to move up if they so choose.

Tre Mann drafted by Oklahoma City in the first round

Tre Mann will be an excellent addition for the Thunder. They drafted him Thursday in the 2021 NBA draft with the 18th overall pick.

Former Florida star Tre Mann broke the curse between the Gators men’s basketball team and the NBA draft Thursday. He was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 18th overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft. He became the first Florida player to be selected in the NBA draft since 2013 when forward Erik Murphy was picked by the Chicago Bulls with the 49th overall pick in the second round.

Mann made the correct decision after he tested the NBA draft waters following his freshman year. He returned to Florida and excelled after former point guard Andrew Nembhard transferred to Gonzaga. He scored 16 points per game while averaging 5.6 rebounds and 3.5 assists. Mann will also be the first Florida player to be drafted under coach Mike White.

His sweet shooting stroke will pay huge dividends with the Thunder because he hit over 40% of his three-pointers last season. Oklahoma City also needs perimeter shooting and playmaking to space the floor for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander if the organization keeps him. Florida fans should look forward to Mann being a solid role player for the Thunder next season.

A roundup of NBA sleepers draft analysts are higher on than others

Who owns the most real estate on Davion Mitchell Island? Who is buying stock in Sharife Cooper?

Everyone loves Cade Cunningham. It’s not a hot take for an analyst to say that Cunningham is their favorite player in the class. That’s not particularly interesting to read, either.

But what is fascinating, however, is when an analyst deviates from the norm and ranks someone significantly higher than where the prospect falls in other rankings. What does that tell us about their individual scouting process and what they value? Further, what does that tell us about the potential draftee?

Some folks call it “buying stock” in a player. Others, like ESPN’s Zach Lowe or The Ringer’s Bill Simmons, call it owning real estate on a player’s island. I like to refer to it as a “draft crush” when I wind up higher than consensus in my evaluation of a player.

My process is ridiculously tedious but the results can be fairly useful. I’ve tracked the evolution of more than sixty unique mock drafts, big boards and draft models from trusted analysts and popular accounts on Twitter.

Each placement is assigned a value based on Kevin Pelton’s draft pick trade value chart. I do this because, as Pelton notes, the difference in relative value between the No. 5 overall pick and the No. 7 overall is much more stark than, say, that of the No. 45 pick and the No. 47 pick.

After composing an aggregate score based on each ranking, I can see where each analyst strays from the pack.

I’ll leave the conclusions drawn from these results up to the reader. But if nothing else, this can eventually be used as a bragging point if one writer was higher than consensus on a draftee who eventually ends up outperforming his draft position.

Final 2021 NBA Mock Draft: Latest intel, trade rumors and predicting all 60 picks

Wasn’t it just the 2020 NBA draft? How is the 2021 NBA draft already here? Crazy, maybe, but the league is about to have a ton of new faces.

Wasn’t it just the 2020 NBA draft? How is the 2021 NBA draft already here? Crazy, maybe, but the league is about to have a ton of new faces.

The names that you’re most likely to hear at the top are Cade Cunningham, Jalen Green and Evan Mobley. But the draft will start heating up once guys like Jalen Suggs, Scottie Barnes and Jonathan Kuminga start to find their new homes.

This draft will also be unique in that there will be fewer players in attendance than usual. According to one prospect who recently spoke to For The Win, due to COVID-19 restrictions, those not invited to the green room are not allowed to come to the stage and shake the hand of the commissioner as they have been in years past.

Regardless of who is actually in the building, however, it is certain to be an exciting and life-changing night for the next generation of NBA talent.

Based on conversations I’ve had with scouts around the league, and from reports and tea leaves left in other mock drafts from trusted draftniks, below is how I project the events will unfold at Barclays Center and on ESPN and ABC at 8:00 p.m. ET on July 29.

The best options for the Lakers in the 2021 NBA draft

These are the best prospects the Los Angeles Lakers should target in the 2021 NBA draft.

The 2021 NBA draft is just a few days away, and the Los Angeles Lakers are expected to have a pick this time.

After trading their first-round pick last season in a deal for Dennis Schroder, the Lakers have the No. 22 pick this year.

The question is whether the Lakers will move that pick for a win-now player or move back in the draft to acquire more picks, which is a possibility.

One of Los Angeles’ biggest needs for next season is another ball-handling option that can relieve some of the offensive burden shouldered by LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

Fortunately for the Lakers, numerous guards are projected to be available in the range L.A. is slated to pick, but 3-and-D wings could also be an option.

Here are the top prospects L.A. should consider — in no specific order — in the draft, depending on if they keep their pick or move back in the draft, including honorable mentions:
