Trading away Dalano Banton to the Portland Trail Blazers seen as Celtics’ biggest ’23-24 regret

It’s hard not to look at how Banton has done since he left the Celtics and not feel a little buyer’s remorse.

Should the Boston Celtics regret trading away point forward Dalano Banton to the Portland Trail Blazers? If you ask Bleacher Report’s Grant Hughes, it is not just A regret, it ought to be their biggest of the 2023-24 NBA regular season to date.

“Banton’s statistical explosion in Portland is the … reason the Celtics might want that decision back,” writes Hughes. “Essentially a 6-foot-9 point guard who can defend multiple positions, Banton averaged 16.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 29.2 minutes per game with the Blazers. Every second he logged in Portland came in zero-stakes games, and Banton didn’t exactly show out prior to the deadline with the Celtics.”

“But his impact after the trade suggests he might have had something to offer in the event Boston lost a key wing or guard to injury during the playoffs,” suggests the B/R analyst.

If the deal ends up costing Boston a game (never mind a title), it’ll be one of the weirder outcomes of such a minor trade. But it’s hard not to look at how Banton has done since he left the Celtics and not feel a little buyer’s remorse.

Celtics honor Robert Williams, Malcolm Brogdon, Dalano Banton, Jaylen Brown at Blazers tilt

While it was as unremarkable of a game as they come given the injuries and goals of both ball clubs, it was also a bit of a snapshot of history.

The Boston Celtics played the Portland Trail Blazers at TD Garden for one of their last tilts left on their slate of games. And while it was as unremarkable of a game as they come given the injuries and goals of both ball clubs, it was also a bit of a snapshot of history.

On one hand, it was the first return for a number of former Celtics players, including Robert Williams III, Malcolm Brogdon, and Dalano Banton since they left the organization. On the other, it also saw star Celtics forward Jaylen Brown score the 10,000th point of his NBA career — not exactly a minor career milestone.

For the former, the team put together a video board tribute for all three former players with an emphasis (of course) on Timelord: which we have included below, courtesy of CLNS Media:

We also found another video board nod to Brown for his impressive milestone — advance to the next page to see that as well.

Former Celtics Grant Williams, Dalano Banton, Lamar Stevens doing well with new teams

It’s good to see that Williams, Stevens, and Banton are all doing well with the ball clubs Boston dealt them to — or in Williams case, the one where he has since landed.

It would have been really nice to see former Boston Celtics forwards Grant Williams, Lamar Stevens, and Dalano Banton having success with the Celtics. But for reasons too complex to get into here, that just was not in the cards for this trio.

Still, Boston fans tend to believe that once you are a Celtic, you are always a Celtic (save maybe for Kyrie Irving). So with that in mind, it is good to see that Williams, Stevens, and Banton are all doing well with the ball clubs Boston dealt them to — or in Williams case, the one where he has since landed.

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast recently took some time on a recent episode to shine a light on how each of these Boston alumni have been doing in their current homes.

Woj: Boston Celtics trade wing Dalano Banton to Portland Trail Blazers for protected second round pick

The Celtics now have nearly a full complement of players to head into the NBA’s 2024 postseason with as they pursue a league-record 18th title.

The other shoe has, as predicted, dropped in the Boston Celtics trade for Philadelphia 76ers wing Jaden Springer. The Celtics, who had dealt for Springer in the waning moments of the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline, have elected to trade deep bench wing Dalano Banton to the Portland Trail Blazers, according to senior ESPN reporter Adrian Wojnarowski.

The move will help keep open the roster spot needed for the Celtics to bring on the contract of Springer, with Boston having previously filled their 15th and final open regular roster spot in the trade for reserve Memphis Grizzlies big man Xavier Tillman, Sr. before dealing away Lamar Stevens.

The Celtics now nearly have a full complement of players to head into the NBA’s 2024 postseason with 14 players as they pursue a league-record 18th title.

Whether any further trade deadline moves are forth coming will likely be revealed in the next hour from publication as any remaining deals in the league office queue are finalized, but this could be it for Boston.

Boston could also get into the buyout market to fill their remaining roster spot.

Celtics Lab 238: A deep dive into the deep rotation’s Stay Ready Crew with Noa Dalzell

Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason?

The Boston Celtics have by most accounts the best top six players in the entire NBA to match their league-best regular season record. So, it can be easy to forget about the rest of the team. The so-called “Stay Ready Crew” mostly does just that — keep themselves in the right frame of mind and state of health in case their number is called.

And those numbers do get called, with players like Oshae Brissett and Lamar Stevens bringing energy and matchup-dependent options that have sparked wins for Boston, while the sharpshooting duo of Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser wreak havoc on opposing defenses. And if it were not for the likes of Luke Kornet and Neemias Queta defying expectations as reserve big men, you can be sure there would be less wins to the Celtics’ name this season.

Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason?

To answer all of these key questions not quite getting the attention they deserve, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell.

The self-proclaimed Boston bench beat reporter who has a bead on a certain crew that stays ready, join us in a deep dive into the Celtics’ reserves. (Apologies for variable audio, wifi issues made for a few bumps).

Boston’s Oshae Brissett, Dalano Banton discuss Toronto’s food, fashion and culture

The Canadians recently took some time to talk about their hometown.

The Boston Celtics are a little further north than usual this season, at least in the sense that they happen to have a pair of Toronto natives on their roster this season. Forwards Oshae Brissett and Dalano Banton have become part of the culture of this season’s Celtics, but also bring their own culture from north of the border.

The Canadians recently took some time to talk about their hometown’s food, fashion, and culture for the benefit of Bostonians and Celtics fans from further afield to highlight aspects of their background we might otherwise miss. As Brissett said, “Like how I dress, people would say that I dress like a Toronto man.”

They even break down what poutine is, though they do not necessarily both share the strong affection for the dish seen in many Canadians.

Can Dalano Banton or Svi Mykhailiuk carve out a role with the Boston Celtics?

The strong start to the season bodes well for the team’s aspirations, but can Mykhailiuk and Banton carve out a regular role?

The Boston Celtics secured a 117-107 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers earlier this week with strong performances from both the starters and the bench players. Al Horford, who started in place of injured Kristaps Porzingis, played a major role in the team’s second-half surge.

Jayson Tatum once again hit crucial shots late in the game, and Jrue Holiday impressed with his defensive skills and all-around contributions, including rebounding. The bench, led by Dalano Banton’s defense, made significant impacts on the game. The Celtics’ ability to rely on players who haven’t seen much playing time shows the strength and depth of their roster, with Svi Mykhaliuk even making an appearance.

The strong start to the season bodes well for the team’s aspirations, but can Mykhailiuk and Banton carve out a regular role?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast weighed in on that question on a recent episode; check it out above!
