Taking an early look at the top 15 CB prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft class

After the Eagles passed on adding defensive backs to the roster last weekend, we’re taking an early look at the top 15 CB prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft class

The 2022 NFL draft came and went with the Eagles passing on a cornerback and safety in all seven rounds, choosing to address the position via undrafted free agency.

Cornerback was deemed an urgent position of need with no established starter at the position opposite Pro Bowl corner Darius Slay.

It’s the third time in four years that Philadelphia has bypassed selecting a cornerback in the draft. It’s the fifth time in six years they haven’t selected a safety.

The Eagles really like the young cornerback already on the roster and add former Clemson All American cornerback Mario Goodrich via undrafted free agency as well.

If 2022 doesn’t produce a starter opposite Slay, the 2023 NFL draft offers an opportunity to find a successor and starter at both spots.

Here are the top 15 cover guys to watch heading into the next college football season.

Who are UGA’s next CB targets in the class of 2021?

The Georgia Bulldogs are looking to add another cornerback recruit in the class of 2021 after the commitment of Tony Grimes.

Five-star 2021 cornerback Tony Grimes recently committed to North Carolina Tar Heels. Grimes was Georgia’s top target at the position in the class. Georgia was considered second-best in the running for his commitment

Grimes, out of Virginia Beach, ranks as the nation’s No. 1 cornerback in the 2021 class. He is also America’s No. 7 player overall and the best player in the state of Virginia.

Now that he’s committed to UNC, where does Georgia go from here? The Bulldogs currently have a commitment from David Daniel, a four-star defensive back/athlete, but Georgia could lose both Tyson Campbell and Eric Stokes to the 2021 NFL Draft. That means Kirby Smart and Georgia will likely be looking for a pair of cornerback recruits in the class of 2021.

First of all, it starts with the class of 2020. Georgia secured a commitment and signing from five-star corner Kelee Ringo. Additionally, Jalen Kimber, a four-star cornerback from Texas, figures to be a contender to start at corner in 2021.

Kirby Smart, Dan Lanning, and the Georgia Bulldog defense will find an elite talent at cornerback. The main question is who? Nyland Green hails from Eric Stokes’ hometown of Covington, Georgia and is a four-star recruit. He’s considered the top in-state cornerback.

Kamari Lassiter put the Bulldogs in his top schools recently. He’s a three star recruit from Alabama.

De’Jahn Warren, a top 2021 community college recruit, is strongly considering UGA as well. Warren visited Athens back in December, but is favored to stay local and attend Penn State.

Lastly, Georgia is in the race for the best recruit in West Virginia in Isaiah Johnson. John is a four-star cornerback from Bluefield High School.

We’ll continue to update you throughout Georgia’s recruiting efforts. The NCAA has extended the dead period for recruiting.

College Football Recruiting: Nation’s top corner picks North Carolina

North Carolina has become a hot spot if you’re one of the top recruits in college football. They again landed a big prize on Tuesday

At least in terms of recruiting I could not have been more wrong about North Carolina’s hiring of Mack Brown last off-season.

I thought Brown had been out of the game for too long and wasn’t going to be able to attract the elite kind of talent to North Carolina like he did in his best days at Texas.

Boy was I wrong.

Brown and his staff have done tremendous work on the recruiting trail as they’ve put together what’s widely seen as a top five class nationally.  Now Brown and the Tar Heels have struck again, landing a commitment from the top corner back in the 2021 class.

Tony Grimes, a five-star talent from Virginia chose North Carolina over finalists Georgia, Ohio State and Texas A&M on Tuesday.  Grimes is listed as at 6-0, 180 pounds and comes from Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Last year Brown took North Carolina from an embarrassing 2-9 to 7-6 and winners of the Military Bowl.  Now he’s taken the Tar Heels to the truly elite levels of recruiting, as 247Sports puts their current class as the third best nationally, trailing only Ohio State and Clemson.

Now can Brown get it to translate into wins, and big wins at that on the field?  In an ACC that has been Clemson or bust for the last half of a decade, it’s easy to see how they have the potential to climb so quickly and potentially start to enter the College Football Playoff contender conversation sooner rather than later.

In case you were wondering, Notre Dame’s ACC cycle includes dates with North Carolina in back-to-back years starting in South Bend in 2021.  247Sports currently ranks Notre Dame 14th in their team rankings in the 2021 recruiting class.

Five-star Buckeyes target Tony Grimes commits to UNC

The Buckeyes lost out on what would’ve been their fifth five-star commit as cornerback Tony Grimes has announced he’ll play at UNC.

The Ohio State Buckeyes were a major player leading up to five-star cornerback Tony Grimes’ decision. Sadly, Grimes announced on Instagram Live that he’ll be attending the University of North Carolina, selecting UNC over Ohio State, Alabama and Georgia

Primarily known as a basketball school, UNC has put together respectable teams in the last few seasons and was close to downing the Clemson Tigers who were undefeated in the ACC last season.

North Carolina, now, according to 247Sports, has the third-best recruiting class of 2021.

Above both Alabama and LSU, the Tar Heels may shock many this upcoming season as their Class of 2021 recruiting class will boast Grimes and more than ten four-star recruits as well.

As for Ohio State, losing out on Grimes is a huge blow. The team just lost 30th-best cornerback Devonta Smith as well.

Seeing both Damon Arnette and Jeff Okudah leave to play in the league, the Buckeyes will heavily depend on Shaun Wade and then hope the 2022 class can repair the damage.

The Buckeyes have one four-star cornerback coming to Columbus this fall, and with four five-star commits, by far the most of any program, the Buckeyes will be just fine moving forward.

5-star CB Tony Grimes to announce commitment

Grimes announced via Twitter that he plans to make his commitment at 5:00 PM Eastern Time today:

This recruiting battle looks to be coming down to the Tar Heels and the Bulldogs. However, you can never count the Buckeyes out. Per 247Sports’ crystal ball, UNC is the favorite.

Ohio State DB target, 5-star Tony Grimes to make college choice June 30

Five-star DB Tony Grimes has announced a decision date for his college choice between Ohio State, North Carolina, Georgia, and Texas A&M.

The Ohio State football program has already put together one whale of a 2021 recruiting class, but there are still some big-time targets out there that have the Buckeyes in their sights. One of those is five-star defensive back Tony Grimes out of Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach, VA.

Despite OSU not being considered a major, major player during his recruitment, the Buckeyes have made the cut as he’s progressed through the recruiting process and are now a part of the final four. New defensive coordinator Kerry Coombs has apparently made quite the impression, and now there’s at least a possibility that Ohio State lands what is considered the best DB prospect in the 2021 class.

And now we’ll know soon enough as Grimes has announced his intention to let his college choice be known on June 30. He has a final four of the Buckeyes, North Carolina, Texas A&M, and Georgia.

The prevailing thought right now is that the Tar Heels have the inside track for his services, but with Ohio State simply hanging in there and beating all the odds up until now, and with Grimes showing OSU some love on Twitter recently, there’s a chance.

The Buckeyes currently sit pretty good when it comes to the future of the program at defensive back, but Grimes is a talent they would clearly make room for if he decided to commit.

We’ll just have to keep an eye on it. The Buckeyes don’t necessarily need this one, but if he falls in their lap and shocks us all, then so be it.

On Sunday, Chambliss, who is ranked as the No. 18 outside linebacker in the 2021 class, Tweeted at the No. 1 cornerback in the 2021 class, Tony Grimes.

Grimes is a 5-star from Virginia Beach, VA, standing at 6-feet and 180 pounds.  He is America’s No. 7 overall player and is the top player in the state of Virginia.  Earlier Sunday, he released his top 4 schools, including Georgia, Ohio State, North Carolina and Texas A&M.

Grimes’ 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions are pretty split right now, experts leaning more heavily towards UNC and UGA.

Georgia currently has 9 hard commits for the 2021 class, giving them the 13th best class in the country as of now, as well as the 4th best class in the SEC.  Landing Grimes would be a huge addition to the Dawgs’ ever-growing list of studs committing to the G.
