Five Notre Dame Connections to celebrate Michael Jordan’s birthday

Happy birthday to a true GOAT

The greatest basketball player to ever walk the earth is turning 61 today as Michael Jordan celebrates his birthday (sorry Kyle Hamilton).  Jordan starred at North Carolina long before Notre Dame joined the ACC but that doesn’t mean he didn’t have connections to Notre Dame throughout his playing days.

Five of these connections were highlighted during the 2020 documentary series, “The Last Dance”.  For a kid growing up in the ’90s, that documentary was a great walk down memory lane and incredibly informative for stories about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls dynasty.

What connections to Notre Dame did that documentary have?  Let’s look back at just a few:

Social media reacts to UNC’s third straight win in blowout fashion

Social media reacts to UNC basketball dominating UC Riverside 77-52 for their third straight win.

The North Carolina men’s basketball program was back in action Friday night and dominated their fourth straight game to improve to 3-0.

UNC has handled their non-conference opponents well this season, but fans have been eager to see less turnovers and better defense as the team’s ability to be a true threat was in question. Well, the doubters have been silenced for now with the Tar Heels dominating UC Riverside 77-52. The defense was on full display, forcing Riverside to a 1-17 start in the second half (5.9%) from the field.

It is safe to say that social media had a field day watching UNC run up the score, as they went on multiple runs through the night, including a 17-0 run to kick off the second period. Armando Bacot led all scorers with 21 points. Meanwhile, Jalen Washington stole the night with his three-point shooting, catching fans by surprise.

Despite blowing out Riverside, some on social media still had their doubts, while others continued their praises of the new look men’s basketball program.

Let’s look at how social media reacted to the monstrous performance by the Tar Heels.

UNC holds off St. John’s to advance to second round of NCAA Tournament

North Carolina continues their dance as they beat St. John’s 61-59 in the first round.

The No. 6 North Carolina women’s basketball team’s road to an NCAA title continues as it beat No. 11 St. John’s, 61-59, on Saturday afternoon.

In addition to Courtney Banghart having a fully healthy UNC team at her disposal, the biggest key to the victory was North Carolina’s ability to defend the paint no matter who came charging in.

In the second quarter, the defensive pressure was at its highest and UNC allowed five points.

As the game continued, the score drew closer as momentum switched back and forth. Finally, with the game tied at 58, Deja Kelly did what she does best: drive to a bucket for a plus-one that gave UNC a three-point lead.

A questionable foul on a 3-point attempt sent St. John’s to the line, but it only sank one of three attempts, giving UNC the 61-59 win.

Kelly finished with 18 points and four rebounds, adding another impressive performance to her resume.

North Carolina will take on No. 3 Ohio State, which dominated its first game of the tournament, 80-66, over James Madison. It will be the first time the Tar Heels face the Buckeyes this season. UNC had a similar outcome over James Madison, winning 76-65 in November.

North Carolina quickly declined an NIT invitation after historic NCAA tournament miss

North Carolina turned down an NIT invitation after missing the NCAA tournament.

The North Carolina men’s basketball felt the weight of being a preseason disappointment on Selection Sunday.

After entering the 2022-23 college hoops season as the top-ranked preseason team, the Tar Heels missed out on the 2023 NCAA tournament and quickly declined a spot in the NIT.

It’s a dramatic fall from grace for the legacy program that so much was expected from early in the season. They’re actually the first team to miss the NCAA tournament after being ranked No. 1 in preseason since the bracket expanded to 64 teams in the 1980s.

North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis cited a desire to “focus on moving ahead” to future priorities as reasoning for not joining the NIT field.

Well, Tar Heels fans will have to wait until next year to see how North Carolina rebounds on what’s a historically disappointing season.

The team probably would’ve fared quite well in the NIT, but we’ll never know how well. At least the Tar Heels won’t have to worry about preseason ranking pressure next season?

Five Notre Dame Connections to celebrate Michael Jordan’s birthday

Happy 60th to the GOAT!

The greatest basketball player to ever walk the earth is turning 60 today as Michael Jordan celebrates his birthday (sorry Kyle Hamilton).

Roy Wiliams and his wife Wanda hilariously did the ‘Swag Surf’ at Notre Dame-UNC game

More like swag swaying, am I right?

Former North Carolina men’s basketball coach Roy Williams and his wife, Wanda Williams, felt moved by the rhythm at the Tar Heels game on Saturday.

During the pregame “Swag Surfin'” fan swaying (no, we don’t know why people do this, either), the Williams decided to get in on the music and move along with the Tar Heel fans.

Roy Williams hasn’t been on the bench for North Carolina since 2021, and Tar Heel fans are surely glad to still see him rocking his blue sweater vest and having a fun time at the game.

He’s known for his dance moves, after all.

Hey, if the music inspires you to “Swag Surf,” you might as well give yourself to the beat.

Sports crowd “Swag Surfin'” is much more enjoyable than the wave, which never really works and asks far too much of a stadium’s worth of people.

The 11-5 Tar Heels downed Notre Dame 81-64 with the Williams in attendance, so expect more “Swag Surfin'” from the couple in the days ahead.

Alabama takes down No. 1 UNC in 4 OT thriller

Crimson Tide stuns No. 1 Tar Heels in an instant classic

It may only be November, but that fact doesn’t take away from the Alabama Crimson Tide knocking off No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels in quadruple overtime. The victory over UNC is Alabama’s first win against a top-ranked team in the country since 2004.

The game was back and forth the entire way with little-to-no separation between the two sides. Alabama’s Brandon Miller picked up his fourth foul early into the second half, but he played smart and was able to stay on the floor the rest of the game, which was massive for Nate Oats and the team. Miller struggled shooting all night as he was 4-21 from the field, but his presence was felt in a lot of other ways.

The decisive moment in the game came with nine seconds to go in the fourth overtime when Charles Bediako was called for goaltending which was eventually overturned to a block that give the Tide possession up by one. Jaden Bradley knocked down a free throw to put Alabama up 103-101 before UNC had to launch one final three that was nowhere near good.

The 2022 national title runner-ups were led by Caleb Love who had 34 points and nine rebounds. UNC lost to Iowa State earlier in the week and will have some regrouping to do, but this will be a dangerous side come tournament time.

This is a massive resume builder for the Crimson Tide!

UNC basketball will host Rutgers in a secret scrimmage game

Rutgers will head to Chapel Hill for a secret scrimmage against the UNC basketball program.

Hubert Davis and North Carolina will hit the court for an inter-squad scrimmage on Friday night during the “Live Action” event to unofficially tip off the 2022-23 season. While fans will get to see the team compete against each other, the Tar Heels will get their first taste of competition soon enough.

The Tar Heels are set to host Rutgers in a ‘secret’ scrimmage game on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Smith Center, Inside Carolina is reporting. The games are closed off to the public and media and allows teams to play in a game ahead of the season.

Each program is allowed one game like this per year.

The secret scrimmages have continued to rise in popularity over the years as we’ve seen UNC take on programs like Villanova, Florida, and Memphis in previous years. It’s a way for teams to see how they stack up against others before the real action starts.

The game is five on five but is broken down into different situations that teams could see throughout the year. The scoring is also different and not standard.

UNC will host its first exhibition game of the year on Friday, October 28th when Johnson C. Smith comes to town.

Notre Dame rocks North Carolina: the best photos

Notre Dame is now 23-2 all-time against North Carolina

Notre Dame moved to 2-2 with a dominating performance over North Carolina on Saturday, a 45-32 final that was nowhere near as close as the final score indicates.  The Fighting Irish offense did what it needed to do against a defensive unit that has struggled mightily in 2022 as North Carolina was handed it’s first loss of the year.

It’s hard to say the problems with Notre Dame’s offense are simply fixed after their performance but things feel a whole heckuva lot better compared to where they were even just a week ago as it’s certainly something to build on headed into the bye week and before a trip to Vegas to take on BYU.

Check out the best photos from the 45-32 victory below: North Carolina. Notre Dame won 45-32.
