3 Buyout/waived players Spurs should target post-trade deadline

Here are three players the San Antonio Spurs could look to sign post-trade deadline.

Though the San Antonio Spurs had a relatively tame trade deadline, they did, in fact, make a move. The Spurs sent Doug McDermott to the Indiana Pacers for Marcus Morris and a second-round pick. Morris will be bought out by the Spurs, meaning he won’t end up suiting up for San Antonio this season.

Morris’ inevitable buyout in San Antonio means they will have an open roster spot and could actually look to add a buyout player themselves. The Spurs won’t be pushing for a playoff spot this season, but adding talent next to Victor Wembanyama could help his development moving forward.

With that in mind, here are three potential buyout candidates the Spurs could look to target for the final portion of the season.

Report: Nets trade Spencer Dinwiddie to Raptors for Dennis Schroder; Thaddeus Young

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported on Friday that the Brooklyn Nets were trading Spencer Dinwiddie to the Toronto Raptors for two players.

The Brooklyn Nets were one of the teams expected to be active with the 2023-24 NBA trade deadline on Thursday at 3 PM ET approaching quickly. It took Brooklyn some time to get into the mix, but it looks like they were able to trade away someone who was not expected to have a market.

Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported on Thursday that the Nets are trading guard Spencer Dinwiddie to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for guard Dennis Schroder. Shortly after his initial report, Wojnarowski added that forward Thaddeus Young was being sent to Brooklyn along with Schroder.

This trade ends Dinwiddie’s second stint with the Nets franchise that saw him grow from a fringe NBA player to someone who showed that he was a starting point guard in the league as well as someone who could fit on any team due to his versatility. This season proved to be a trying one for Dinwiddie as he looked disengaged at times on the court due to how much his role was changing because of the Nets prioritizing the growth of Mikal Bridges and Cam Thomas.

In the end, Dinwiddie gets to presumably be the starting point guard for a Raptors team looking to find a direction for its franchise soon. In exchange, the Nets get a player in Schroder who can step in as a ball-handler/scorer, filling a need for Brooklyn whether Ben Simmons is healthy or not.

Young has been reduced to a bench player who has averaged no more than 18.3 minutes per game during his time in Toronto as the organization has focused its efforts to be around budding star forward Scottie Barnes. It remains to be seen what Young’s role with the Nets will be, but most likely, he will be coming off the bench for Brooklyn and could possibly not play in some games as well.

The remaining active NBA players from each draft class between 2003 and 2010

It is truly remarkable that LeBron is still playing as well as he does.

With each passing season, more and more players in the previous generation of the NBA are graduating into retirement.

Some of the most recognizable and dominant players of a beloved era (e.g. Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard, etc.) have recently ended their professional playing careers.

As the league begins to look increasingly different every year, we decided to look at which players drafted before 2011 are still active in the league. There are only 30 players who fit those qualifications and only 19 have started more than one game this season.

Here is a look at each NBA draft class and who remains active years later.

All data is provided via Stathead and is accurate as of publishing.

NBA draft rewind: Sixers select versatile Thaddeus Young in 2007

In the 2007 NBA draft, the Philadelphia 76ers selected versatile forward Thaddeus Young with the 12th overall pick.

The Philadelphia 76ers are without a draft pick in 2023, so it’s a good time to look back at some past draft picks the franchise has made.

The Sixers were coming off a tough 2006-07 season. Philadelphia had traded Allen Iverson to the Denver Nuggets and then waived Chris Webber, leading to him signing with the Detroit Pistons.

The Sixers held the 12th pick in the 2007 draft, and they selected a versatile forward in Thaddeus Young. The lanky forward out of Georgia Tech played a role right away. He averaged 8.2 points and 4.2 rebounds in helping the Sixers make a surprise run to the playoffs.

Young then played well in the first round against the Pistons, averaging 10.2 points and 4.5 rebounds. Philadelphia took a 2-1 lead in the series before falling in six games.

Overall, Young averaged 13.7 points and 5.5 rebounds in seven seasons in Philadelphia. He was then set to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2014 offseason.

Former Sixers forward Thaddeus Young delivers motivation to youngsters

Former Philadelphia 76ers forward Thaddeus Young delivers a motivating message to youngsters.

Current Toronto Raptors and former Philadelphia 76ers forward Thaddeus Young has carved out a very successful NBA career. He has been in the league for 15 seasons despite never being named an All-Star or averaging 20 points per game.

The reason Young has made it work is he found his role. He found what he was good at and developed into a very solid player NBA teams can count on.

As he heads into his 16th season, the former Sixers forward was meeting with young basketball players, and he delivered a strong motivating message to them about carving out a role in the league and finding longevity.

Please be advised that the clip below contains language that some might consider offensive.

A lot of developing players can use Young as an example. He has found success in the league, and he can share his story with youngsters who have dreams of making it to the NBA.

Every player in Philadelphia 76ers history who has worn No. 21

Here is a list of all 14 players who have worn the No. 21 for the Philadelphia 76ers in their history.

It’s summertime in the NBA, so it’s time to learn some history. The Philadelphia 76ers are one of the older franchises in the NBA. Their history dates to the 1949-50 season.

With that longevity, the team has had hundreds of players come through the City of Brotherly Love. Sixers Wire looks at the No. 21 which has been worn by 14 of those players in the history of the franchise.

This running series will go through all of the uniform numbers worn in franchise history. The previous edition of this series was a list compiling the 16 players who have worn the No. 22.

Here is the list of the 14 who have worn No. 21 in Sixers history:

2007 NBA re-draft has Sixers taking Corey Brewer with Thad Young gone early

In a 2007 re-draft, the Philadelphia 76ers select Corey Brewer with Thaddeus Young off the board early.

In the 2007 NBA draft, the Philadelphia 76ers were looking to get back on track following a tough 2006-07 season. The Sixers had moved on from the Allen Iverson era and also waived Chris Webber as they embraced a change for the franchise.

They held the No. 12 pick and selected versatile forward Thaddeus Young, who did many good things for the Sixers during his time in Philadelphia. He was a big part of them making the playoffs four times and always did what was asked.

Due to his production in the league, Young has been taken early in a re-draft done by HoopsHype. It had Young going No. 6 to the Milwaukee Bucks, leaving the Sixers to take Corey Brewer at No. 12. Brewer originally was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves at No. 7.

Brewer last played in the league with the Sacramento Kings in the 2019-20 season, and he averaged 8.7 points and 2.8 rebounds for his career. He ended up playing in seven games, with three starts, for the Sixers in the 2018-19 season when he signed two 10-day contracts.

Brewer averaged 7.6 points and 2.4 rebounds during his very short stint with the Sixers.

Nick Nurse, Raptors feeling confident they can beat Sixers in this series

Nick Nurse and the Toronto Raptors feel confident they can come back in this series against the Philadelphia 76ers.

PHILADELPHIA–The Philadelphia 76ers once led this Round 1 series with the Toronto Raptors 3-0. Now, they have to head back to Toronto for Game 6 after the Raptors upset them in Game 5 on Monday on the road.

No team in NBA history has ever rallied from a 3-0 deficit to win a playoff series. Only three of them have ever rallied to force a Game 7 and the Raptors now feel confident that they can rally in this series and upset the Sixers.

“I think the biggest thing that I’ve seen is we’ve generated really good shots most of the series,” said Raptors coach Nick Nurse before the Game 5 win. “We haven’t shot very well yet and I told the guys, ‘Today would be a good day to go ahead and start making some of those open shots’.”

The Raptors answered the call when they knocked down 51.2% of their shots on Monday despite missing All-Star guard Fred VanVleet. That should give Toronto even more confidence as they forced the series back to North of the Border for a Game 6 on Thursday.

“These guys, from day one when I got here, they seem like a great group of guys who are very poised,” Thaddeus Young told reporters after the game. “We have a really good coaching staff. We have a really good staff that puts gameplans together and our job is to go out there and execute the game plan to the best of our ability. That’s what we all do.”

Heading into this series, the Raptors knew the Sixers had more talent, but they play extremely hard and they fly around on defense. That gives Philadelphia a lot of trouble every night and now, the Sixers will have to dig deep on the road to get it done.

“We go out there and play as hard as we can,” Young added. “Everybody listens to each other. No one man is bigger than the team and that’s why we’re able to go out there and win basketball games. We’re able to get ourselves back into this series and continue to fight each and every night.”

How to bet the Raptors down two starters against the 76ers

Don’t fade the Raptors just yet.

Toronto Raptors rookie Scottie Barnes has been ruled out for Game 2 of their series against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday. Gary Trent Jr. and Thaddeus Young are also doubtful to play.

Potentially down two starters and a third rotation player following a 20-point loss in Game 1, the Raptors are 7.5-point underdogs on Tipico Sportsbook.

One of the harder things to do in the playoffs is resist the urge to overreact to a single result. Add a few injuries to the equation, and predicting the outcome of the next game in a series becomes all the more challenging. Coaches make adjustments and player performance fluctuates.

However, unless one team is completely outmatched or a star player is out, it’s foolish to expect a blowout every game. Many people, including myself, thought before Game 1 the Raptors would match up well with the Sixers. I still believe that to be the case, even with a few important players out.

I’m taking the points.
