Former Boston Celtics big man Danilo Gallinari signs with Milwaukee Bucks

The Italian has played for both the Washington Wizards (to which he was dealt by Boston in the trade that brought Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics) and Detroit Pistons this season.

Former Boston Celtics big man Danilo Gallinari has elected to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks, according to new reporting from The Athletic’s Shams Charania. “Gallinari is finalizing a deal with the Milwaukee Bucks,” writes The Athletic reporter. “Gallinari’s agent, Michael Tellem, has been discussing options with several title contenders this week.”

“Gallinari seriously considered several teams – including (the Los Angeles ) Clippers, (Cleveland) Cavaliers and (Chicago) Bulls – before choosing the Bucks, where he’ll have opportunity for a strong role under his old coach Doc Rivers,” adds Charania on Gallinari’s hunt for the right partner for the rest of this season.

The Italian has played for both the Washington Wizards (to which he was dealt by Boston in the trade that brought Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics) and Detroit Pistons this season.

The Celtics traded Gallo away after his rehab with the team was nearly complete, the veteran forward having never actually suited up for Boston after tearing his ACL in international play in the 2022 NBA offseason.

Can Danilo Gallinari help the Boston Celtics win a championship?

Should the Boston Celtics attempt to acquire Danilo Gallinari via the buy-out market.

Despite making two trades around the NBA trade deadline, the Boston Celtics still have an open roster spot. As such, they’re expected to be potential players in the buy-out market as they look to add one final piece to a potential championship puzzle. Of course, whoever the Celtics add will likely need to be willing to accept a bench role within the rotation.

Boston has arguably the most talented top-8 rotation in the NBA. Any veteran that is added off the buy-out market will be seen as injury insurance for the remainder of the season.

According to the Green With Envy podcast, that veteran addition could be Danilo Gallinari. The veteran forward is currently a free agent after being waived by the Detroit Pistons. He has unfinished business with the Celtics after he tore his ACL shortly after signing with the franchise in 2022.

Despite his advancing age, Gallinari is still a legitimate floor space and a reliable stationary shooter. However, his defensive limitations could be a concern for Celtics fans.

Might a reunion with Danilo Gallinari be on the table for the Boston Celtics?

There are rumbles Boston could be interested in a do-over.

The Boston Celtics purposefully left a roster spot open for their 15-man regular season roster at the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline. Planning to survey the options available among players bought out this season, they also face some barriers there.

Such candidates must have made less than the $12.4 million full midlevel exception to be eligible to sign with the Celtics, per the terms of the league’s new collective bargaining agreement. And though there is a solid supply of such candidates, would it make sense for Boston to reach out to an alum who never actually played for them?

We are talking about former Washington Wizards big man Danilo Gallinari, who had signed with Boston previously, but never suited up for the team after an injury in the 2022 offseason.

Per recent reporting from NBC Sports’ Kurt Helin, the Celtics “have some level of interest” in a reunion, along with the Los Angeles Lakers. It’s unclear how interested either party actually would be in making that reunion happen, but it’d be a good narrative at least.

Gallo has said in the past he holds no ill feelings towards Boston for dealing him away, but that could be PR on his part. And Boston may want an option who is better than Gallinari is at this stage of his career.

But if they want a big to bomb away from the corner, the Italian forward is eligible to sign with the club again.

Ex-Celtics forward Danilo Gallinari ‘being monitored’ as Los Angeles Lakers trade target

Gallinari has slowed a bit since returning from the ACL tear that kept him from ever suiting up for Boston, but can still offer some help.

Former Boston Celtics backup big man Danilo Gallinari has been on the radar of one of the Celtics’ biggest rivals ahead of the NBA’s 2024 trade deadline, according to new reporting from HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

Per Scotto, Gallo, “who’s continued to be a knockdown 3-point shooter while playing minutes at the four and small ball five at times in the final year of his contract,” is being monitored by rival front offices as a potential trade target. “The Lakers are among the teams who’ve checked in on Gallinari’s price tag to acquire him,” relates the H/H reporter of the former Celtics’ trade market.

Gallinari has slowed a bit since returning from the ACL tear that kept him from ever suiting up for Boston, but can still offer some long-distance shooting and a little passing and rebounding off the bench.

There is a non-zero chance Gallinari could end up a buyout candidate as well.

Danilo Gallinari, Mike Muscala now legal to trade, sign with Celtics; Should Boston inquire?

Would bringing back Gallo or Muscala make sense for Boston?

Now that the Washington Wizards have dealt away both of the players they got from the Boston Celtics this past offseason in the deal that brought star center Kristaps Porzingis to the Celtics. Both Danilo Gallinari and Mike Muscala could be brought back to play for Boston via trade or after a buyout.

Before that, the rules of the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement would not have permitted such a reunion for the Celtics. But now that it is back on the table, would bringing back Gallo or Muscala make sense for Boston? With the team looking mainly for a bigger wing and to a lesser extent some help in the team’s frontcourt rotations, there is a case for both given the budget the Celtics have to work with (read: not much). But could Boston do better than a pair of players that did not work out in the past?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast took a deep dive into what such scenarios might look like.

Take a look at the clip above to hear where they came down on each.

Two former Boston big men on the move from Washington to Detroit

Mike Muscala and Danilo Gallinari now have the dubious honor of trying to help the Pistons not be the worst, literally.

Former Boston Celtics big men Danilo Gallinari and Mike Muscala are on the move again, headed to join the Detroit Pistons according to new reporting from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Per Woj, the Pistons “have traded forwards Marvin Bagley III and Isaiah Livers and two future second-round draft picks” to the Washington Wizards.

The move was made on Detroit’s end because that franchise has “been determined to add some veteran shooting to the roster, and Gallinari and Muscala can help Detroit spread the floor in limited roles this season,” writes the ESPN senior reporter. The pair of bigs were dealt from Boston to the Wizards in the deal that brought star center Kristaps Porzingis to the team this past offseason.

Muscala had joined Boston at the prior trade deadline, a backup center option who never quite fit into what the Celtics were doing. Gallinari had signed with Boston in the 2022 NBA offseason, but tore his ACL in international play that summer and never actually suited up for the Celtics.

Danilo Gallinari holds no grudges against the Boston Celtics

Even though it was a childhood dream to play for the Celtics, Gallinari doesn’t begrudge the Celtics for trading him.

Even though it was a childhood dream to play for the Boston Celtics, former Boston forward Danilo Gallinari doesn’t begrudge the Celtics for trading him away as part of the package that landed star big man Kristaps Porzingis in Boston. “Betrayed?” asked Gallo rhetorically in an interview with Mundo Deportivo’s Tony Canyameras (translated from Spanish). “No, it’s the nature of the business, I don’t feel bad about it,” he explained.

Part of why he was dealt was the lack of certainty surrounding his torn ACL that had him sit out his sole season on the Celtics roster, but he’s feeling much better with more than a year of recuperation behind him. “I feel good, improving day by day, I am happy with the process,” he shared.

Playing what he calls “a role similar to that of the last three or four years, coming off the bench to help the team by being effective and being one of the best leaders,” Gallinari is being the consummate professional despite being on a rebuilding squad after signing with a contending one.

Even as a pro’s pro, it’s human nature to wonder how things might have played out had he stayed healthy. “There are many moments when I think about what could have happened if it hadn’t been for the injuries,” Gallo admitted.

He’s lost significant time to injury with the New York Knicks and Denver Nuggets before Boston. “And last season I had the opportunity to be part of a ring team and I got injured. There are several ‘what if’ moments.”

The remaining active NBA players from each draft class between 2003 and 2010

It is truly remarkable that LeBron is still playing as well as he does.

With each passing season, more and more players in the previous generation of the NBA are graduating into retirement.

Some of the most recognizable and dominant players of a beloved era (e.g. Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Bosh, Dwight Howard, etc.) have recently ended their professional playing careers.

As the league begins to look increasingly different every year, we decided to look at which players drafted before 2011 are still active in the league. There are only 30 players who fit those qualifications and only 19 have started more than one game this season.

Here is a look at each NBA draft class and who remains active years later.

All data is provided via Stathead and is accurate as of publishing.

Danilo Gallinari reflects on season spent with Boston Celtics: ‘I could have helped the team a lot’

Danilo Gallinari reflected on his time spent with the Celtics and what could have been during a recent conversation with the Athletic’s Jay King.

The Boston Celtics recently defeated the Washington Wizards 126-107 on the road, and before the game, former Celtic wing Danilo Gallinari spoke about his experience in green in an interview with the Athletic’s Jay King.

Gallinari joined Boston during the 2022 offseason, figuring to be a key rotation piece for a team with real title aspirations. Two months later, Gallinari tore his ACL playing for his native Italy during the 2022 FIBA World Cup qualifying play. The injury sidelined him for the following season. Gallinari was later traded to Washington as part of the deal that landed Kristaps Porzingis in Boston. A player with a long list of previous injuries, Gallanari reflected on the missed opportunity.

“I had the chance to decide to go to a championship team,” Gallinari said. “And just like all my career, the timing with injuries has always been terrible. So it was just bad timing.”

12 Boston Celtics included in HoopsHype ‘best player in country history’ list

Let’s take a look at which Boston alumni made the cut — and what countries they hail from.

The Boston Celtics are a founding member and the most storied ball club of the league now known as the NBA, having been among the handful of teams from the era of the Basketball Association of America (BAA) days as the precursor league that would grow into today’s NBA was called.

So it should not surprise that the players who have worn the green and white over the nearly eight decades of existence of the franchise have at times been among the best to play the game anywhere in the world. In fact, there is a notable number of Celtics alumni present in a HoopsHype assessment of the best players to come from specific countries around the globe.

Let’s take a look at which Boston alumni made the cut — and what countries they hail from.
