Former UCLA Bruin Jrue Holiday selected to the USA Men’s Basketball Team

Jrue Holiday makes Team USA cut.

USA Basketball is set to tip off in July in Paris, France. Among the members of the team are superstars Kevin Durant, LeBron James, and Steph Curry. But one former UCLA Bruin made the list.

Jrue Holiday, the starting guard for the Boston Celtics, rounded out the TeamUSA roster. Holiday, a two-time All-Star and one-time NBA Champion brings a blend of scoring ability and rock-solid defense to Team USA.

The 17th pick in the 2009 NBA Draft, Holiday is a seasoned veteran of the NBA who won gold with Team USA in 2020. Now, Holiday looks to bring home a second-straight gold medal for the United States.

Holiday joins former Bruin Russell Westbrook as a two-time invitee to play for the United States. Westbrook took home gold in 2012 but declined his invitation in 2016.

Before Holiday suits up for Team USA, he and the #1 seed Boston Celtics look to make a run at the Larry O’Brien trophy as the NBA playoffs begin.

11 former UCLA Bruins make the playoffs for NBA teams

A lot of familiar faces in the NBA Playoffs.

It is no secret that UCLA has a decorated history of producing NBA talent. From Bill Walton to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, there is no shortage of all-time players who played for the Bruins. This season, a whopping eleven players from the UCLA pipeline made the NBA playoffs.

Among those making the post-season are Lonzo Ball, Kyle Anderson, Jaylen Clark, Jrue Holiday, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Zach Lavine, Kevon Looney, Kevin Love, Norman Powell, Russell Westbrook, and Peyton Watson. The long list of former Bruins speaks to the program’s ability to churn out NBA talent.

For veterans Russell Westbrook and Kevin Love, who played together at UCLA, this could be their final NBA playoffs, with both trying to take home the title.

With the eleven players representing seven teams, there is a good chance that at least one of the former Bruins will hoist the Larry O’Brien trophy by the end of the season. The question is, who will it be?

Did the Boston Celtics’ recent decision to extend Jrue Holiday shut the door on extending Derrick White?

Not if you ask Celtics team president Brad Stevens.ย

Did the Boston Celtics’ recent decision to extend Jrue Holiday shut the door on extending Derrick White? Not if you ask Celtics team president Brad Stevens. In a recent discussion at the Auerbach Center in Brighton, Stevens covered several key topics regarding the team ahead of the start of the 2024 postseason.

The Celtics president touched on Holiday’s recent contract extension, plans for signing White to his own contract extension this coming summer, and adding former two way big man Neemias Queta to the team’s 15th regular roster spot. He also spoke on Joe Mazzulla’s development as a coach heading into his second year and gave a preview of the 2024 NBA Playoffs.

Following these remarks, CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning and Josue Pavon shared their reactions and analysis of Stevens’ comments. Check it out below!

What does the Jrue Holiday extension mean for the Boston Celtics’ future?

Could the deal come back to bite the Celtics down the road?

The Boston Celtics just signed veteran point guard Jrue Holiday to a four-year, $135 million contract extension with the Celtics that will take him through the 2027-28 season. In the present, that is a massive boon to Boston to remove a lingering issue ahead of the 2024 NBA Playoffs. But could that come back to bite the Celtics down the road?

As noted by Adam Taylor in his “Celtics Chronicle,” Jaylen Brown’s supermax extension kicks in next season, and Derrick White and Jayson Tatum are both due for some big money boosts as well. How long can Boston keep this team together? “For as long as they are competing for the title,” writes Spotrac’s Keith Smith. ” Long playoff runs and potentially winning a championship will go a long way toward easing any concerns over paying a massive payroll bill.”

“The more difficult answer involves hitting a decision point if the team falls short of contending for a title,” he adds. “At that point, paying this kind of money for a team that isn’t getting it done is untenable.”

Smith also notes that it “gives (team president) Brad Stevens some tradable salary to work with down the line” should unexpected issues come up. “Let’s say we’re in the 2026 offseason, and Boston has some depth issues,” the cap expert posits.

“They can move Holiday, who will likely be making around $35 million that season, in a deal to replace some depth. Having some movable salary is going to be huge for teams dealing with the second apron.”

On the Boston Celtics signing Jrue Holiday to a four-year, $135 million extension

How might it change their respective futures?

The Boston Celtics likely wanted to head into the NBA’s 2024 Playoffs with as few other things to be thinking about as possible, and from the sounds of the Celtics news cycle in the last day, they got their wish.

With news breaking that veteran Celtics floor general Jrue Holiday is signing a four-year, $135 million contract extension with the Celtics that will take him through the 2027-28 season, that is one thing that will no longer be on anyone’s mind when the postseason starts. But is it a good move for the Celtics and Holiday both? How might it change their respective futures?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast, Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance, took a closer look at Holiday’s contract extension on a recent podcast. Check it out below!

Do the Celtics have four future Hall of Famers on their roster?

How many future Hall of Famers due the Boston Celtics have on their roster?

The Boston Celtics are enjoying what could become a historic season for the franchise. They sit first in the Eastern Conference with a 15-game cushion over the second-placed Milwaukee Bucks. They also have the best record in the NBA. Joe Mazzulla’s team is widely expected to contend for the Larry O’Brien trophy at the end of the season.

A significant part of Boston’s success this season has been the sheer level of talent on its roster. Its starting five could be an All-Star group. Al Horford coming off the bench is a luxury most teams could only dream of. As such, it’s no surprise that Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale has listed four members of Boston’s roster as future Hall of Famers.

“The issue with the Boston Celtics isn’t spotting Hall of Fame candidates,” Favale wrote. “It’s deciding on how many.”

Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Jrue Holiday and Al Horford are Favale’s selections. Depending on how successful the Celtics are in the coming years, we may need to add Derrick White and Kristaps Porzingis to that list, too.

Right now, it doesn’t matter how many roster members could potentially make the Hall of Fame. The important thing is winning a championship and proving that the current roster is among the best in the history of the NBA. Boston has been building to this moment; now is the time to execute.

Will the Boston Celtics sign Jrue Holiday to a contract extension?

Or could he simply opt in to his player option on his current contract?

Veteran Boston Celtics combo guard Jrue Holiday became eligible to sign a contract extension with the Celtics on this past Monday (April 1) that could start off with an annual salary for the UCLA alum as high as $51 million.

Speaking on a recent episode, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Garden Report” podcast, Bobby Manning, Josue Pavon and Jimmy Toscano, debated how likely it is that the Celtics can keep Holiday playing in Boston long term given the exigencies of the new collective bargaining agreement on the Celtics’ growing payroll.

They also got into whether or not Holiday would simply opt in to his player option on his current contract. Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear what they had to say!

The Boston Celtics and Jrue Holiday should want to get an extension signed ASAP

Can the Celtics get the UCLA alum to sign on the dotted line on or after April Fools’ Day?

The Boston Celtics and veteran combo guard Jrue Holiday both have an interest in waiting until April 1 to get a contract extension done. More flexibility in terms of what the Celtics can offer comes available on that date, making an extension before then unlikely.

But the date is nearly here, and we’ll get a look at just how happy Holiday is in Boston as a result, with some real concern being sparked if a contract extension can’t be worked out ahead of the NBA’s 2023-24 postseason. Can the Celtics get the UCLA alum to sign on the dotted line on or after April Fools’ Day?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast, Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance, took a closer look at the possibility on a recent episode. Check it out below!

Will the Boston Celtics extend Jrue Holiday after April 1?

Will the Boston Celtics extend Jrue Holiday after April 1 to avoid pending business heading into the 2024 NBA Playoffs?

At this very moment, veteran Boston Celtics combo guard Jrue Holiday could be extended by the Celtics. But as of April 1, the range of what Holiday could get for an extension improves in a way that makes signing one before that date unlikely at best.

But the UCLA alum will also command a big chunk of Boston’s cap space as the team soars in cost — and there are legitimate concerns about how well that deal will end, given Holiday is no spring chicken. Will the Celtics extend Holiday after April 1 to avoid pending business heading into the 2024 NBA Playoffs?

The host of the NBC Sports Boston “Celtics Talk” podcast, Chris Forsberg, took some time to talk it over on a recent episode with Celtics cult cap expert Ryan Bernardoni (a.k.a. Dangercart).

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what they had to say.

Is Jrue Holiday’s defense as elite as Steph Curry’s shooting?

Is Jrue Holiday’s defense as respected as Steph Curry’s shooting among NBA fans?

Jrue Holiday is among the best defenders in the NBA. The Boston Celtics guard can legitimately cover all five positions and play multiple positions. This season, he’s guarded every spot on the floor and has been a core piece in a defensive system that ranks second in the league for defensive rating.

As such, Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green recently shared his belief that Holiday’s defense is as respected as Steph Curry‘s shooting within NBA circles. Considering Curry is widely considered the greatest shooter in league history, that is certainly some high praise.

Green’s comments came during an interview with Holiday on “The Draymond Green Show.” Holiday was an offseason addition to the Celtics roster after the Milwaukee Bucks had traded him to the Portland Trail Blazers as part of the Damian Lillard trade.

You can watch the full discussion surrounding Holiday’s defensive skill by clicking on the embedded clip above.
