Steph Curry speaks on Cory Joseph being traded

Steph Curry shared his thoughts on the Golden State Warriors trading Cory Joseph at the February 8 trade deadline.

Toward the end of the Feb. 8 trade deadline, the Golden State Warriors shipped veteran guard Cory Joseph to the Indiana Pacers in a move to free up an additional roster spot. Having joined as a free agent in the summer, Joseph had played in 26 games for the Warriors, providing reliable backup off the bench.

When speaking to the media following the Warriors’ 131-109 win over the Pacers on Thursday, Steph Curry admitted he was going to miss having Joseph in the locker room. Curry’s comments came after he produced a memorable 42-point performance in his team’s latest win.

“It sucks losing Cory. If anybody knows Cory Joseph and his personality and his presence, he’s an ultimate professional,” Curry said. “He brings a great spirit to the locker room, helping the young guys. That type of guy is a connector. We’re going to miss him for sure. That one was a tough one. I understand the business of the game and the money and all that. We’re going to miss him for sure.”

Joseph entered the NBA as the 29th pick in the 2011 NBA draft. He is in his 13th season in the league and has played for six teams. The Pacers have since waived Joseph, so it will be interesting to see what team he ends up on next and whether that will be in the buyout market or during the offseason.

Nevertheless, the trade has provided the Warriors with an additional roster spot, which will give them options in the buyout market or when looking to convert one of their two-way players onto a full-time deal.

3 Buyout/waived players Spurs should target post-trade deadline

Here are three players the San Antonio Spurs could look to sign post-trade deadline.

Though the San Antonio Spurs had a relatively tame trade deadline, they did, in fact, make a move. The Spurs sent Doug McDermott to the Indiana Pacers for Marcus Morris and a second-round pick. Morris will be bought out by the Spurs, meaning he won’t end up suiting up for San Antonio this season.

Morris’ inevitable buyout in San Antonio means they will have an open roster spot and could actually look to add a buyout player themselves. The Spurs won’t be pushing for a playoff spot this season, but adding talent next to Victor Wembanyama could help his development moving forward.

With that in mind, here are three potential buyout candidates the Spurs could look to target for the final portion of the season.

Report: Warriors trade Cory Joseph to Pacers

The Golden State Warriors have traded Cory Joesph to the Indiana Pacers.

The Golden State Warriors sent Cory Joseph to the Indiana Pacers in return for a second-round pick, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Joseph joined the franchise during the summer, signing a one-year $3.1 million deal. He has played in 24 games for the Warriors, averaging 2.4 points, 1.2 rebounds and 1.6 assists on 35.9% shooting from the field and 31% from 3-point range.

The deal opened a second roster spot for the Warriors, who could convert one of their two-way talents to a full-time deal. Lester Quinones would be the likely candidate. Or, Mike Dunleavy Jr. could look toward the buyout market to fill the final two spots on the roster, although he will need to be cognizant of the tax hit.

With such a minimal move at the trade deadline, it appears the Warriors are putting faith in their core rotation to turn their season around. There have been some encouraging signs since Steve Kerr implemented a new frontcourt lineup of Draymond Green, Jonathan Kuminga and Andrew Wiggins.

With the Warriors’ trade deadline activity likely complete, attention turns toward the buyout market. It will be interesting to see how the team approaches filling out the final spots of the roster.

Watch: Warriors two new veterans working on a two-man game

Cory Joseph and Dario Saric have been working on some pick-and-pop offense during training camp.

The Golden State Warriors added three veterans this summer. Mike Dunleavy acquired Chris Paul, Cory Joseph and Dario Saric to help give the franchise additional leadership and consistency. Throughout the summer, Paul’s addition dominated discussions surrounding the Warriors.

Nevertheless, Saric and Joseph also project to have important roles to play. Both veteran additions will likely feature in the Warriors’ second unit. With that in mind, Saric and Joseph appear to have been working on some two-man action, so they have some go-to offense when sharing the court together during the season.

In a video that surfaced on social media, Saric and Joseph are working on some pick-and-pop actions. Saric is the “popper” and gets the 3-point shot as part of the drill.

Cory Joseph taking a mentor role with Warriors rookie

Cory Joseph has been working with the Golden State Warriors rookie guard during training camp.

Cory Joseph joined the Golden State Warriors earlier this summer. The veteran guard will be a high-level backup to Steph Curry and Chris Paul. However, it would also appear Joseph has been taking on extra responsibility in the locker room by working with rookie guard Brandin Podziemski.

Joseph, 32, entered the NBA in 2011, having spent one season playing for The University of Texas. As a one-and-done prospect, Joseph understands the difficulties of adjusting to the NBA game. The veteran guard is now looking to help Podziemski make those same adjustments. During a recent post-practice media session, Kerr shared his thoughts on Joseph’s veteran leadership role.

“Cory’s just a great human being, a great teammate,” Kerr said. “He’s been through what Brandin has gone through already. As a rookie in San Antonio, one year college, he had a lot to learn. That was a great place to go, to be coached by Pop, play with that group. He can recount those experiences to Brandin and Brandin can relate to that.”

Podziemski could gatecrash the Warriors rotation in the upcoming season, especially if he can provide some of the energy and hustle lost by Donte DiVincenzo. Having Joseph available to bounce ideas off and to help keep him grounded will be a big boost to Podziemski’s chances of having an impressive rookie season.

Of course, Joseph will also aim to impress during the upcoming schedule, as his selfless style of basketball and veteran approach to the game fits directly into the system the Warriors are looking to run this year. It will be interesting to see how much playing time Joseph is afforded in the coming months.

Warriors guard withdraws from Team Canada ahead of FIBA World Cup

The Golden State Warriors guard will not be participating at the FIBA World Cup.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8170″]

Cory Joesph has reportedly removed himself from Team Canada ahead of the FIBA World Cup. According to Michael Grange of Sportsnet, Joseph aggravated a back issue during training camp and made the decision so he can be ready for the upcoming season with the Golden State Warriors.

The World Cup will begin on August 25 and run until September 10. Golden State will now only have one member of their roster participating in the tournament, with two-way guard Lester Quinones set to represent the Dominican Republic.

Joseph was acquired by the Warriors earlier this summer, as Mike Dunleavy and Joe Lacob looked to ensure the franchise had enough depth at the guard position after multiple seasons of struggle whenever Steph Curry went to the bench.

After spending the last two and a half seasons with the Detroit Pistons and not making the playoffs since 2019, Joseph can be expected to take his conditioning incredibly seriously ahead of the new season. Furthermore, having won a championship with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014, Joseph may believe the upcoming season is his best chance of tasting that success for a second time.

As such, it makes sense that the veteran guard would remove himself from Team Canada’s roster if he believes that his participation in the World Cup could hinder his ability to be an impactful member of Golden State’s rotation.

Pistons’ Corry Joseph named as ‘sleeper’ Bulls free agency target

The Chicago Bulls will be looking to improve their point guard play this summer, and Detroit Pistons guard Cory Joseph could be an option.

The Chicago Bulls need to make some serious additions to the roster this summer if they hope to effectively compete for a playoff spot next season. However, not every player they bring on board needs to be a starting-caliber player. They also need to round out the bench unit.

One of Chicago’s most pressing needs is the point guard position. They have guys like Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu who need to be re-signed, but the Bulls could still use some more help at the position. In particular, they could use a veteran to help lead their young guys, especially since Lonzo Ball is expected to miss all of next year.

According to Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report, Detroit Pistons guard Cory Joseph could be a potential “sleeper” target for the Bulls to go after in free agency this summer.

“Finding a Ball clone would be ideal, but few of those players even exist—and they certainly don’t fit within the Bulls’ budget,” Buckley wrote. “So, Chicago could settle for covering at least a few of the traits that made him such a snug fit as its lead guard.

“Cory Joseph might help with that. He’s a willing and able passer who takes great care of the basketball (career 3.0 assists against 1.0 turnovers). The fact that he’s constantly looking to set the table means he could keep all of Chicago’s scorers engaged and in their right spots.”

Joseph is a name who may have fallen under the radar in Detroit, but the 31-year-old’s steady hand and solid three-point stroke could make him a nice fit in Chicago’s rotation.

Cory Joseph’s waved off putback nearly destroyed Bulls bettors at the buzzer

The Bulls covered the spread in their 94-88 win in Detroit after a Pistons buzzer-beater was waved off.

We’re only two nights into the 2021-22 NBA season, and bettors are already freaking out while monitoring their tickets. Whether it’s been a parlay that neared destruction in its final leg or a prop bet that fell apart thanks to a completely one-sided game, the outcomes of these opening games have created some early-season excitement.

Wednesday night’s Chicago Bulls-Detroit Pistons matchup was great, but the drama of the 94-88 Chicago win was even greater. Down by six points with just seconds to play, Detroit Pistons guard Cory Joseph rebounded and scored a bricked Jerami Grant desperation three-pointer as time expired, causing many viewers to fall out of their seats.

But, why? The Bulls still won regardless of the shot, and instead of escaping Detroit with a six-point victory, they’d settle with a four-point win. No big deal, right? Well, that’s all fine and dandy for the bettors who took the money line with the Bulls. However, the additional two points made all the difference in the world for the many distraught individuals who had put down money on Chicago to cover the spread (-5.5). To the delight of those formerly distraught gamblers, though, Joseph’s shot was waved off as it did not actually beat the final horn, reverting the final score back to 94-88.

Let’s hope that this absolutely fantastic ending is a precursor to an intriguing and drama-filled NBA season.
