Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 43

Today’s installment focuses on the 14 players who wore No. 43 over the years as of Aug. 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 14 players who wore No. 43 over the years as of Aug. 2023.

On this day: Clark, Doll born; Harangody, Davis signed; Wallace, Dragic cut; Smith, Cohen pass

On this day, Bob Doll and Carlos Clark were born, Glen Davis and Luke Harangody signed, Rasheed Wallace and Zoran Dragic were cut, and Derek Smith and Alan N. Cohen passed.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, former Boston big man Bob Doll was born in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. Playing both the center and power forward positions, Doll played his collegiate basketball for the University of Colorado, with which he won the Most Valuable Player award for the National Invitational Tournament in 1940.

Doll played several years in the Amateur Athletic Union after college before joining the (now defunct) St. Louis Bombers, for whom he played two seasons. He signed with the Celtics as a free agent in 1948, playing two seasons for the club.

The 6-foot-5 Coloradan averaged 7.3 points and 2.4 assists per game with Boston (rebounds had yet to be tabulated).

Commanders season opener in 50 days: Washington’s best No. 50

We are 50 days away until the Commanders open the 2023 NFL season.

Commanders Wire continues a countdown to the Commanders season opener for 2023 in 50 days. Who was Washington’s best player wearing number 50?

While there were no Hall of Fame or even Pro Bowlers who wore No. 50 in Washington NFL football history, there were certainly men who had fine careers and deserve honor in being mentioned.

Fred Hageman (1961-64) came to Washington first playing in 1961, after being drafted by the NY Giants in the 1960 draft 96th overall. Hageman had played his college ball at Arkansas and Kansas, and in his first NFL season, he was a middle linebacker, starting all 13 games he was able to play. In his next three seasons for the Burgundy and Gold, Hageman transitioned to the other side of the ball, starting at center. In 1962 and 1963, Hageman started all 14 games for Washington. Hageman was able to only start three games in 1964, his last NFL season.

Pete Wysocki (1975-80) came to Washington as an undrafted linebacker out of Western Michigan. During his first four seasons, despite not starting a game at linebacker, Wysocki quickly made his impression on special teams playing with an enthusiastic intensity. In his last two NFL seasons, Wysocki started 9 games (1979) and 8 games (1980).

Derek Smith (1997-2000) was drafted out of Arizona State 80th overall by Washington GM Charley Casserly. Becoming an immediate starter, Smith started 16, 15, 16 and 14 games in his four seasons in Washington’s defense. In his first two seasons, Smith was the right linebacker, and in his last two, he was the middle linebacker in a 4-3 defensive scheme. In his four Washington seasons, Smith was credited with 376 tackles (277 solo, 99 assisted). Smith was a fine player but departed for unrestricted free agency, playing nine more NFL seasons.

With national signing day in the books, we move on to the buildup and excitement of the annual spring game at Ohio State.

It was a fairly uninteresting week in Columbus, Ohio, as national signing day has lost most of its luster due to the early signing period. The other thing taking our attention was all the drama up north in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Those storylines are not being evaluated here, though, as we are continuing our focus on the transfer portal and the available talent that could potentially help the Buckeye football squad.

The offensive line was not a weakness, but it certainly had issues that were larger than normal, and it would not be surprising for Ohio State to add depth to the bookends of the offensive line. The following are the top five available offensive tackles in the transfer portal.
