What would an NFL offense look like comprised of only Texas Longhorns?

The Texas Longhorns have produced a plethora of offensive talent over the years. So what would an offense of only Longhorns look like?

The Texas Longhorns have provided plenty of NFL talent over the years, but a large portion of that talent came during the Mack Brown era. It wasn’t just Brown that produced NFL talent, as the first Longhorn ever drafted dates all the way back to 1938 when Hugh Wolfe was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third round.  Other big names include Bobby Layne, Tom Landry, Tommy Nobis, Earl Campbell, Ricky Williams, Vince Young and many more.

Given the amount of Longhorns that have made the jump to the NFL and AFL, we were curious what an offense of former Texas players would look like in the NFL today. We used players from the XFL as well to fill out the starters. So let’s get started with the quarterback.

Texas football now has a five-star commit in 2021 recruiting class

Texas commit Ja’Tavion Sanders recently received his five-star rating by 247Sports Composite.

Texas is off to a hot start with the 2021 recruiting class.

Head coach Tom Herman is on pace to end the recruiting cycle with another top ten finish. The 2021 class currently includes talented four-star quarterback Jalen Milroe, four-star athlete Billow Bowman and newly-designated five-star athlete Ja’Tavion Sanders.

According to 247Sports Composite, Sanders is now the No. 1 athlete in the nation and the No. 21 overall prospect. With the recent updates of the Top247 and other industry rankings, Sanders is now labeled as a five-star prospect.

He is now the highest-rated commit in the 2021 class. In 2020, Texas signed two five-star prospects in running back Bijan Robinson and defensive lineman Alfred Collins.

The 6-3.5, 220 pound playmaker played both ways at Denton Ryan and earned first-team all-District 4-5A D-1 at defensive end. He also excelled at wide receiver, compiling 47 receptions for 763 yards and 7 touchdowns.

Sanders committed to the Longhorns last September, is one of the top commitments under Herman amidst his four-year tenure with the program.

Texas has Top 10 recruiting class averages over the past five years

Over the past five years, the Texas football program is ranked the No. 7 team in the nation in terms of recruiting class averages.

It’s clear that the Texas football program has been able to land some of the best players in the country.

It hasn’t necessarily translated to success on the field yet, but the Longhorns are within the top ten teams in the nation in terms of recruiting class averages over the past five years. The lack of production heavily weighs on the coaching staff in regards to player development, which will hopefully be fixed with head coach Tom Herman’s reshaped staff this season.

Regardless, it’s impressive that Texas is consistently amidst recruiting class averages with programs such as Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, and LSU.

CBS Sports recently ranked the schools who have done the best job putting together multiple highly-ranked recruiting classes. Texas lands at No. 7 in the nation, the best in the Big 12 conference.

Their five-year average rating was 10.4, slightly above Michigan. The Longhorns have had a top ten recruiting class over the past three years, having the No. 3 class in the country in 2018 and 2019. If it weren’t for the No. 26 recruiting class in 2017, Texas would have likely been top five on the list.

This list focuses heavily on the play acquisition portion of the program, using data from 247Sports Composite Rankings. Alabama and Georgia are the heavy favorites.

Team Conference Five-year average 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020
Alabama SEC 2.4 1 1 7 1 2
Georgia SEC 2.8 7 3 1 2 1
Ohio State Big 10 5.4 4 2 2 14 5
LSU SEC 6.8 3 7 15 5 4
Clemson ACC 9 10 16 6 10 3
Auburn SEC 9.6 9 9 12 11 7
Texas Big 12 10.4 11 26 3 3 9
Michigan Big Ten 10.6 5 5 21 8 14
Florida SEC 10.8 13 10 14 9 8

Oklahoma just missed out on the top ten with an overall grading of 11.

Texas Softball Keeps Perfect Record Intact

The Texas Longhorns softball team kept their perfect record intact with a 3-0 weekend. The softball team was led by Miranda Elish.

After the Texas Longhorns softball team started 3-0 following their 12-0 victory in five innings, they kept it rolling through the weekend. The Longhorns played two games on Saturday. First up was their game against the Colorado State Rams.

The Longhorns started off the game with a scoreless first inning but the offense started rolling in the second inning where they brought four runs across the plate. The Longhorns went into the fourth inning with a 5-0 lead before Miranda Elish busted the game wide open with a three-run shot to get the scoring started. Kaitlyn Washington cleared the bases with a pinch-hit double with the bases loaded. MK Tedder brought Washington home on a RBI single to make it 12-0 Texas.

As good as Elish is with a bat in her hand, she was deadly on the mound. Elish pitched four scoreless innings where she struck out eight batters. Grace Green came on in the fifth but gave up three runs without recording an out. Courtney Day relieved Green, retiring all three batters to secure the 12-3 win in five innings.

In their second game of the day on Saturday, the Longhorns got off to a fast start. Texas would plate five runs in the first inning after retiring three of the first four batters faced before heading into the bottom of the first. Leadoff hitter Reagan Hathaway would walk and advance to third on a single then score on a throwing error by Wichita State.

After an Elish walk, Courtney Day would drive in a run on an RBI single. Mary Iakopo would bring everyone home on a home run to left. The Longhorns were up 5-0. After three scoreless innings, Wichita State would plate a run in the top of the fifth. Iakopo would drive in the ninth run of the day with an RBI double to give Texas the 9-1 victory.

On Sunday it was more of the same for the Longhorns softball team as they took on the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi team. After AMCC took the early 1-0 on a fielders choice in the top of the first, Texas would answer immediately and frequently. Hathaway would score on a Janae Jefferson RBI triple to tie the game up. Jefferson and Shannon Rhodes would score on a Miranda Elish single to make it 3-1. Elish wasn’t done there.

In the second inning Tedder scored on a Rhodes single and then Sullivan walked in a run with the bases loaded to make the score 5-1 Texas. With the bases loaded, Elish stepped to the plate to break the game wide open.

Heading into the bottom of the third inning, the Longhorns led 9-2 after giving up a run in the top of the inning. Alyssa Popelka would take Elish’s place in the lineup. She immediately hit an RBI single to bring it to 10-2, the Longhorns rattled off eight more runs over the next two innings. Day took over on the mound in the top of the third inning. She struck out five batters and retired all nine she faced to secure the win.

The Longhorns softball team has yet to play beyond the sixth inning. Every game this season has been called due to the run rule for the Longhorns. They will head to Mexico next for the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge on Thursday.
