The newest edition of the Locked on Longhorns Podcast features host of the Big 12 Radio show on SiriusXM, Ari Temkin. The main topic of discussion in the shows first segment includes the newest Amway Coaches Poll. Where did Texas rank? It is too low or too high? Plus which team in the top five should be lower in the initial preseason poll. Ari discusses why he is excited about the coordinator hires for Texas.

The Athletic’s Dane Brugler joins in the second segment to discuss his thoughts on senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger. He gives some background on why he chose Ehlinger as one of his top five quarterbacks for the upcoming draft class. How high is the celing for Sam and what he highest grade he has heard. Samuel Cosmi and Derek Kerstetter were really good in 2019, where does Brugler see those players in terms of draft stock.

Defensively there are two players at this point on the draft radar. What does Joseph Ossai need to do to become a top 50 prospect in the 2021 NFL Draft if he decides to declare following his junior season. Three glaring questions surrounding Texas football ahead of fall camp

Texas begins their fall football camp on Friday. With new coordinators on each side of the ball, several questions remain.

As the Texas football program prepares to head into fall camp on Friday, there’s several intriguing storylines to take a look at.

It all starts with the two new coordinators on each side of the ball. Mike Yurcich has plenty of talented weapons at his disposal to have one of the most high-powered offenses in the country. But how will he use them?

Chris Ash has changed the defensive scheme entirely in hopes of creating a consistent pass rush. There’s no reason that Texas shouldn’t field the best defensive unit in the Big 12.

Several question marks surround this roster. Some may be answered throughout camp and practice reps, while others won’t be quite figured out until several games through the season. Longhorns Wire staff took a dive into three glaring questions that remain.

Over the summer, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Tom Herman this season.

Today, we will be looking at redshirt junior tackle Samuel Cosmi.

Height: 6-7 / Weight: 309

Class: Redshirt junior

Hometown: Humble, Texas

High School: Atascocita

HS ranking (247Sports): Three-star / No. 135 position / No. 195 in-state

HS ranking (Rivals): Three-star

Analysis: Besides Sam Ehlinger, Samuel Cosmi is Texas’ most important offensive player, protecting the quarterback’s blindside. The left tackle had a breakout 2019 season, finishing second-team All-Big 12.

This upcoming season is going to be even bigger for Cosmi, as he is expected to be a first-round draft pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Only a three-star prospect coming out of high school, Herb Hand has done an outstanding job turning Cosmi into a top player in the country.

In 27 career games, Cosmi has started in 26 of them. According to PFF, the tackle has only given up four sacks in 1,162 passing block snaps. Cosmi is essential to Texas’ offensive flow, making sure Ehlinger can display his talents in the passing game.

Texas expected opener vs UTEP on Sept. 12, Big 12 play begins Sept. 29

Texas’ season will begin on Sept. 12 against UTEP. Before the 9+1 schedule, UTEP was scheduled to travel to Austin on Sept. 19.

According to 247Sports, Texas’ season will begin on Sept. 12 against UTEP. Before the Big 12 announced a 9+1 schedule, the Miners were scheduled to travel to Austin a week later on Sept. 19.

The conference schedule will kick off Sept. 26 after a bye week. If the Big 12 goes off the Longhorns current schedule, Kansas State will be the opening game. However, 247Sports is reporting the schedule may get switched up.

Based on the new start date, here is Texas’ schedule based on the current lineup.

  • Sept. 19 – BYE
  • Sept. 26 – @ Kansas State
  • Oct. 3 – Oklahoma (Dallas)
  • Oct. 10 – West Virginia
  • Oct. 17 – @ Texas Tech

  • Nov. 7 – TCU
  • Nov. 14 – Iowa State
  • Nov. 21 – @ Oklahoma State

Most importantly, the Red River Shootout is still planned to be in Dallas. Texas and Oklahoma have played in the historic Cotton Bowl every year since 1929. It is a very real possibility that the Big 12 could look to move back the Texas-Oklahoma game.

Another option would be spacing out some of the games to allow for multiple bye weeks with so much uncertainty surrounding the upcoming season. The conference needs to take in account the possibility for games being postponed due to COVID-19 positive cases. Spacing out some of these games would allow for makeup dates.

A cancellation of games due to a spike in coronavirus cases could impact the Big 12 Championship game set for mid to late December. Keep tuned into Longhorns Wire as we will keep you up to date on the upcoming season. The conference is expected to release the official schedule in the coming weeks.

Texas targeting another 2021 offensive lineman from Dallas

Texas landed their second offensive lineman commit in the 2021 class on Thursday. Now, Herb Hand turns his attention to OT Ryan Lengyel.

Texas landed their second offensive lineman commit in the 2021 class in Michael Myslinski on Thursday. Now, Herb Hand turns his attention back to an in-state prospect in offensive tackle Ryan Lengyel.

Coming out of Jesuit High School in Dallas, Texas, Lengyel received an offer from the Longhorns on July 31. Baylor and Wyoming will challenge Texas for his commitment, which could be coming within the next 10 days.

247Sports’ crystal ball has one prediction for Lengyel and it currently favors the Longhorns, with recruiting analyst Mike Roach giving an eight on confidence level.

Lengyel told Mike Roach before being offered that he grew up watching Texas.

“Texas is a huge program and I’ve always watched it being raised in Texas,” he said.

Listed at 6-5 and 275 pounds, Lengyel is seen as a long term project for Herb Hand. Only a three-star prospect, the Dallas product could be similar to future first-round draft pick Samuel Cosmi.

Cosmi ranked higher on 247Sports recruiting websites but Lengyel has similar measurables to the current starting left tackle. Texas’ offensive line recruiting has been able to find diamonds in the rough over the years.

A commitment in the coming days could make two offensive linemen for Texas is a week. Hayden Connor is the only blue-chip tackle the Longhorns currently have. However, Texas is looking to prove Hand can develop not as highly ranked recruits into NFL quality players.

Five-star WR Evan Stewart talks relationship with Tom Herman

It is early in the 2022 recruiting cycle, but Texas is already pushing hard for Evan Stewart, a five-star wide receiver out of Frisco.

It is early in the 2022 recruiting cycle, but Texas is already pushing hard for one of the top in-state players. Evan Stewart is a five-star wide receiver out of Frisco, Texas, and is the No. 6 player in the state.

Across the country, he ranks fifth among wide receivers. Recently, Stewart caught up with 247Sports to talk about his recruitment and relationship with the Longhorns.

“I have a good relationship with Coach Jay [Valai] and Coach [Tom] Herman,” Stewart said. “I’ve been talking to them almost daily. We just have normal conversations like we would have with friends or family and they just ask how I’m doing and ask about my pops.”

Stewart should be a priority for Herman and Valai, as the Longhorns need an elite blue-chip wide receiver to pair with the quarterback of the future. Texas has not had a five-star wide receiver play for them since Mike Davis.

With visits on hold due to COVID-19, Stewart is hoping to get back to Austin. The Frisco Liberty product has been to Austin but for a track visit, not football.

“Definitely want to go to everywhere that’s close to here,” he said. “I haven’t been on a real visit besides Baylor and Texas for track. I liked the atmosphere and I like the city.They’re just Texas, it has a ring to it.”

Stewart had a successful junior season, coming up just shy of 1,000 yards. He finished with 757 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, playing against 6A competition, the best in the state of Texas.

With the Longhorns also going after five-star Caleb Burton, 2022 could finally be a major wide receiver recruiting class for the Longhorns. If those two end up with Texas, they will be paired with Sam Ehlinger’s successor, whoever it may be.

Preseason Amway Coaches Poll: Texas cracks top 15

Texas ranks No. 14 in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. It is UT’s second-lowest rating in the Tom Herman era.

College football preseason polls are finally here. In years past, Texas has been built up with expectations and ranked too highly in preseason polls. This season, the Longhorns are in a comfortable spot, not dawning them as one of the top teams in the country.

Texas ranks at No. 14 in the preseason Amway Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. For the past two seasons, Tom Herman’s squad was a preseason top 10 team, only to finish with multiple losses.

As for the Big 12, Oklahoma is the only other top 15 team, coming in at No. 6. Oklahoma State (No. 16) and Iowa State (No. 25) are the only other teams from the conference to make the top 25.

Texas lands commitment from three-star center Michael Myslinski

Texas has once again landed an offensive line prospect, this time at center. Three-star OC Mike Myslinski announced his commitment to UT.

Texas has once again landed an offensive line prospect, this time at center. Mike Myslinski of Jacksonville, Florida announced his commitment to the Longhorns Thursday morning.

Myslinski is the No. 12 center in the country and rated a three-star on the 247Sports composite. Texas beat out big-time schools, with Myslinski committing to the Longhorns over Duke, Florida State, Iowa, Louisville, Maryland, Michigan State, and Missouri.

Offensive line head coach Herb Hand only offered Myslinski on April 3, 2020. The center unofficially visited Austin on June 20 and was apart of Texas’ 2021 recruiting class just over a month later.

After losing out on the top center in the country, James Brockermeyer, the Longhorns’ offensive line seems set in the 2021 class. Myslinski joins tackle Hayden Connor as recruiting wins for Hand.

As it has been the past four years, the Longhorns have the top recruiting class in the Big 12. However, being ranked outside the top 10 nationally is new for Tom Herman. Texas sits at No. 12.

Texas Longhorns all set to kick off fall camp on Friday

With the 2020 college football season approaching, the Texas Longhorns are kicking off fall camp on Friday. Three groups to watch.

It has been a long time since we have seen the Longhorns on the football field in a practice setting. Ever since the team’s dismantling of Utah in the Valero Alamo Bowl, the countdown has been on. On Friday Texas makes their long awaited return to the practice fields on the Forty Acres.

With the start of fall camp in Austin, we can finally start to get a better understanding of what this team could potentially look like this season. Since spring football was cancelled many players trained at home during the pandemic in preparation of the upcoming season.

The defensive line unit is just one of the groups on the football team looking for answers. Joseph Ossai will be moving up from his linebacker spot to be more of a pass rusher in the new look Chris Ash defense as the ‘Jack’. Add in newcomer Alfred Collins to go along with Ta’Quon Graham, Keondre Coburn and Marquez Bimage. There should be plenty of excitement from the group.

On the other side of the ball there is the wide receiver group. Brennan Eagles spoke early on about not playing this season but the growing consensus thinks that he will play. Eagles moved in with quarterback Sam Ehlinger and that might be a reason why he decides to play. It seems like a lock that he would take over the ‘X’ receiver spot with Collin Johnson now in the NFL.

There there is Jordan Whittington but he is nursing an injury that likely will keep him out of practice. At least for now. Jake Smith has the opportunity to take a stranglehold on the slot role in this offense. Over the last several years, the slot receiver has been one of the most dangerous aspects of the offense. On the other side opposite of Eagles, we are eager to see how Tarik Black and Joshua Moore look. Who will get the leg up in the competition.

The running back spot is always a hot topic. Keaontay Ingram and Roschon Johnson return from the 2019 team. They will be joined by newcomer Bijan Robinson. While Ingram is nursing a hamstring injury, Johnson and Robinson have an opportunity to showcase their skills. This will be a time to shine for Bijan as he tries and get acclimated to the college game.
