Dolphins worked out two other OL before signing Lester Cotton to practice squad

Miami has dealt with injuries along the line this year.

While the Miami Dolphins opted to sign offensive lineman Lester Cotton to their practice squad, replacing Lamont Gaillard, he wasn’t the only player they worked out on Tuesday.

Miami also hosted offensive tackle Derek Kerstetter and center Jon Toth for tryouts.

Toth, 28, was originally undrafted in 2017 out of Kentucky. He’s bounced around from the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions and Washington Football Team/Commanders during his six-year career, appearing in six games. Toth is currently rostered by the St. Louis Battlehawks of the XFL after playing for the DC Defenders back in 2020.

Kerstetter, 24, signed with the Buffalo Bills after going undrafted this year out of Texas. He played started in 49 of his 58 games played at Texas earning All-Big 12 second-team honors in 2021.

The practice squad may be full now, but that’s not to say that one of these guys couldn’t find their way to Miami if an injury were to occur.

How each Texas prospect performed at pro day on Thursday

Brenden Schooler was a top performer in most categories.

In total, 15 former Longhorns participated in Texas’ pro day on Thursday. Continue reading “How each Texas prospect performed at pro day on Thursday”

Four Longhorns named to All-Big 12 first team

Four Longhorns received first-team honors.

Texas had a disappointing 5-7 campaign in Steve Sarkisian’s first season as head coach.

The Horns were riding high after a 4-1 start to the season before Caleb Williams lead a historic comeback in the Cotton Bowl. Texas came crashing down to Earth after that game, losing six straight.

Texas still saw some excellent individual seasons from multiple players. Bijan Robinson, Xavier Worthy, Derek Kerstetter and Cameron Dicker were all voted first-team All-Big 12.

Robinson was the catalyst for the Texas offense all season long. The star running back finished with over 1,400 total yards and 15 touchdowns in only 10 games played. Robinson will be back at Texas next season for his junior year.

Texas found gold with freshman wide receiver Xavier Worthy. He set almost every freshman wide receiver record in program history and was named Big-12 Offensive Freshman of the year. Worthy is the first Longhorn to win the award since Colt McCoy in 2006.

Derek Kerstetter was one of the few bright spots on the Texas offensive line that struggled most of the year. Replacing the fifth-year senior will be a difficult task for offensive line coach Kyle Flood.

Lastly, Cameron Dicker had a phenomenal year punting the ball. Dicker average 46.8 yards per punt on the year, tops in the Big 12.

Texas Report Card: PFF grades from the Oklahoma State loss

It wasn’t a great day as a whole for the Texas Longhorns. Which ones graded best/worst on Saturday?

For the second week in a row, the Texas Longhorns fell to a team that hails from the state of Oklahoma. They lost in a similar fashion again this week as they blew a double-digit lead.

The Longhorns led 17-3 following the 13-yard catch and run by Bijan Robinson from Casey Thompson. From that point forward, Texas was outscored 29-3 as Oklahoma State stayed perfect on the season. Their performance launched them inside the top 10 of this week’s poll.

Oklahoma State and Oklahoma are now both in firm control of their destinies and could meet twice this season. For Texas, they have some soul searching to do as they try and right the ship. The Iowa State and Baylor matchups will be big for the team just looking for a better bowl bid at this point.

As far as Pro Football Focus (PFF) grades from this game, the top performer on offense was wide receiver Keilan Robinson, although he only played five snaps. Derek Kerstetter was the top performer on offense. Defensively, the team was led by linebacker Jaylan Ford. Texas lost DeMarvion Overshown for the game due to a concussion after only 16 snaps on defense.

Take a look at which Longhorns graded well, and which ones were on the wrong end of the spectrum.

Red River Showdown: Going Behind Enemy Lines with Longhorns Wire

As the Sooners and the Longhorns prepare to face off in the Red River Rivalry, we’re going Behind Enemy Lines with Longhorns Wire.

The Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns will meet for the 117th time this Saturday in a game that will be a hotly contested matchup between two of the better teams in the Big 12.

While the Oklahoma Sooners may come in as the “favorite” in this matchup, what we’ve witnessed over the last decade is that it doesn’t really matter who the favorite is. The rivalry provides high drama and games that go down to the wire more often than not.

For both sides, this game carries a ton of weight as the Oklahoma Sooners look to prove they belong among the top four teams in the country. For the Texas Longhorns, they’re trying to work their way back up the rankings after a disappointing loss to Arkansas a few weeks back.

As if they didn’t have enough to play for, pride is on the line in one of the most storied rivalries in all of sports. We’re excited to help you get ready for this year’s playing of the Red River Showdown with Longhorns Wire’s Griffin McVeigh as he takes us through the ins and outs of the Texas Longhorns ahead of Saturday’s matchup.

Looking ahead at potential NFL draft prospects for Texas in 2022

Here’s a list of seven Texas Longhorns that we could see as potential NFL draft prospects in 2022.

With the 2021 NFL draft just around the corner, eight Texas Longhorns will be waiting patiently to hear their named called throughout the three day event.

Joesph Ossai and Samuel Cosmi are expected to be among the first Longhorns selected. Ta’Quon Graham and Caden Sterns could be taken off of the board as high as day two.

Unfortunately, the trio of Chris Brown, Tarik Black and Brennan Eagles look like they’re going to be late day three picks or more than likely become undrafted free agents.

What about Sam Ehlinger? The Longhorns star quarterback could go anywhere on day two or three, or even potentially undrafted. His stock is all over the place.

Now that the 2021 Longhorns have their feet in the draft, let’s look ahead to next year. These are seven Texas players who could be among the next patch of prospects after the 2022 season.

Texas Football: Offensive lineman Derek Kerstetter will return for fifth year

Texas Longhorns offensive lineman Derek Kerstetter announced on Monday that he will return for his fifth season.

After much speculation this offseason, it’s now become official. Offensive lineman Derek Kerstetter, who suffered a devastating ankle injury against Kansas State last year, will return to the University of Texas for his fifth season.

Kerstetter’s announcement was seemingly expected for the Longhorns. The NCAA granted each player a free year of eligibility for 2020 due to COVID-19.

Inside Texas reporter Joe Cook announced the news via Twitter on Monday afternoon.

Since 2017, Kerstetter has started 46 games for Texas at different positions on the offensive line including center, right guard, and right tackle.  He’s on track to make a full recovery and is expected to start at right tackle next season. His veteran leadership will be critical.

It’s uncertain yet if he’ll take part in spring training, even though he should be on track to start practicing again at that point. Kerstetter will likely continue to rehab and wait until the season gets closer before playing full contact.

Around the Horn: Derek Kerstetter has surgery, COVID-19 update

According to reports, Texas Longhorns center Derek Kerstetter had successful surgery. Plus an update on the team’s COVID-19 testing.

During the second quarter of the Texas Longhorns 69-31 victory over Kansas State, offensive lineman Derek Kerstetter suffered an injury to his left leg. It was reported after the game to be a dislocated ankle and a fractured fibula. According to Brian Davis of the Austin American-Statesman, Kerstetter had a successful surgery.

Kerstetter will now begin rehab for an injury that needs three to five months to heal and be able to return to football activities. It is unclear at this time if he will return to the team in 2021. With eligibility being waived for the 2020 college football season, the senior would have the option of returning and not having his scholarship count against the current roster. Given the injury, Kerstetter could possibly return to enhance his NFL Draft status.

The other positive news, or not positive news the Longhorns had no new COVID-19 cases following testings according to a report from Horns247. Brian Davis stated that practice could resume as early as Tuesday if all goes well with their testing. The Longhorns are still expected to play Kansas on Dec. 12 as of right now. The game could be moved to Dec. 19 as a last-ditch effort to get the game played.

The Longhorns are looking to win seven games this year for the fourth-consecutive season under head coach Tom Herman. Provided they also win their bowl game, they would have at least eight wins in each of the last three seasons.

Update: Derek Kerstetter suffered lower leg injury, won’t return

During the second quarter of the game, senior Derek Kerstetter suffered a horrific injury. He won’t return for the Texas Longhorns today.

Throughout the week heading into the game against Kansas State, starting center Derek Kerstetter was listed as questionable with an ankle injury. The Texas Longhorns would end up playing him at his old spot at right tackle to start the game.

Kerstetter was moved to fill the void left by Samuel Cosmi after he opted out of the season. Christian Jones was moved from right tackle to the left side. Freshman Jake Majors started at center and they played Derek at right tackle. It was looking good early on for the Texas Longhorns offense. In the middle of the second quarter, it took a turn for the worse.

After the defense recovered a fumble deep in Wildcats territory, Kerstetter suffered a horrific injury. It was listed as a lower extremity injury that appeared to be his left leg. The entire team would rally around one of their senior leaders as he was carted off the field.

It was reported that Kerstetter was transported to a local hospital for further treatment. Rafiti Ghirmai came into the game to play right guard and Denzel Okafor moved out to right tackle.

We will keep you updated as more information is provided.
