Jets sign CB Rachad Wildgoose, make 7 other roster moves

The Jets signed CB Rachad Wildgoose and TE Kenny Yeboah on Tuesday, in addition to a handful of other moves.

The Jets made a bevy of roster moves before their Week 11 matchup with the Dolphins.

New York signed TE Kenny Yeboah and CB Rachad Wildgoose to the active roster to bolster the depth at two key positions. The team also signed LB Corey Thompson and WR Keelan Doss to the practice squad. CB Lamar Jackson and DE Jabari Zuniga were protected on the practice squad.

CB Brandin Echols was placed on injured reserve with a quad injury, while LB Noah Dawkins landed on practice squad injured reserve with an undisclosed injury.

Here’s a little bit on the newcomers and New York’s other roster moves.

A former Wisconsin CB is signed by the New York Jets

The former Badger is now on an active NFL roster

After spending time on the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad, former Wisconsin cornerback Rachad Wildgoose will get his chance on an active NFL roster.

The former Badger was drafted in the 6th round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Bills, and was waived on August 31, 2021 before re-signing to the practice squad. Wildgoose has now signed with the New York Jets, with the team confirming the signing this afternoon.

Wildgoose has yet to appear in an NFL game during his rookie season. The former Badger was with Wisconsin from 2018-20, before leaving for the NFL after his junior campaign. The former three-star recruit will be on the first active roster of his NFL career.

Jets sign Rachad Wildgoose off of Bills practice squad

Another #Bills rookie was signed off their practice squad:

The Buffalo Bills have had another rookie draft pick plucked from their practice squad this season.

On Tuesday, the team the Bills (6-3) beat in Week 10, the New York Jets, announced that they have added cornerback Rachad Wildgoose to their roster. Since the end of training camp, Wildgoose had been on the Bills’ taxi squad.

A team in the NFL can sign players off of any other cub’s practice squad throughout the season if they want to.

But that player has to be signed to the active 53-man roster. Essentially, it’s a promotion for the player.

In the Bills’ win over the Jets, New York lost cornerback Brandin Echols to a quad injury.

According to Jets Wire, Echols will miss three-to-five weeks, so he’s on injured reserve. Wildgoose takes his place.

Both Echols and Wildgoose are sixth-round rookies.

Earlier this season, Buffalo lost their first rookie from their practice squad: offensive lineman Jack Anderson. The Philadelphia Eagles signed him in September.

Anderson was a seventh-round selection by Buffalo.

The Buffalo Bills trimmed their roster from near 80 men to 53 on Tuesday in accordance with the NFL’s deadline.

It’s always a tough day across the league, but that’s the nature of business. The day also comes with more than a handful of surprises.

With that, here are the five  most head-turning cuts made by the Bills:

Stock up, stock down following the #Bills’ preseason win over the #Lions (via @mckennamiddle):

The Buffalo Bills kicked off their preseason with a dramatic 16-15 win over the Detroit Lions. The Bills controlled the game early, but a fourth quarter push from Detroit needed to see a late field goal from Tyler Bass to win the game for Buffalo.

Let’s see which of the preseason performers for the Bills excelled (and which didn’t) against the Detroit Lions in Bills Wire’s stock report:

What’s next for the Bills at cornerback, post 2021 NFL draft

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane on cornerback position following 2021 NFL draft.

NFL analysts and mock drafts anticipated that the Bills would be looking to add a cornerback in the NFL draft, and in the sixth round, they did just that.

While it may not have happened as early as some had speculated, versatile Wisconsin corner Rachad Wildgoose was selected. As he projects to develop in the slot behind Taron Johnson, some might wonder what impact that might have at the corner position across from Tre White.

Last year saw Buffalo take Pitt corner Dane Jackson in the seventh round, providing competition for starter Levi Wallace. Another member of that Pitt defense was added this year in safety Damar Hamlin, and Bills general manager Brandon Beane has verbally thrown his support behind Jackson on multiple occasions. He continued to do so after the draft, praising the dependability of the CB’s skills, playmaking, and production.

“Just because we didn’t get a corner high doesn’t mean there are not other options later. But we do believe Levi and Dane and the guys we have here” Beane said while addressing the media. “Every chance Dane got in a game, it wasn’t too big for him, he made plays.”

It’s worth noting one of the more successful cornerbacks developed in head coach Sean McDermott’s system, Josh Norman, was drafted in the fifth round when Beane and McDermott were with the Panthers. Norman’s success offers a testament to the potential that can be reached.

Beane went on to emphasize an important feature he looks for at the position in McDermott and assistant head coach Leslie Frazier’s defense, which is the ability to tackle.

“One of the key traits in Leslie and Sean’s defense that we count on in corners that some don’t… We need our corners to come up and tackle. It’s just the way this is built, so, that’s a big part of it that gets overlooked,” Beane said.

The Bills GM was active as usual right after the conclusion of the draft in recruiting players who went unpicked during those seven rounds.

Corner Nick McCloud from Notre Dame was one of two CB’s that were added to the position group, At 6-foot, 193-pounds, the graduate transfer from North Carolina State forced two fumbles, had eight pass breakups, and an interception in one year with the Fighting Irish last season. He also had a 4.3 40-yard dash at the school’s pro day.

Another player added was USC corner Olaijah Griffin, a Pac-12 honorable mention selection who in 2020 had an interception to go with  22 tackles, and four broken-up passes for the Trojans. The son of rapper and producer Warren G, Griffin will look to crack the roster to regulate in Buffalo.

With the draft over, there might be additional options still available with another wave of free-agent signings coming as well. Beane acknowledged as much himself that an additional corner signing remains a possibility for Buffalo.

“It’s a long time until we play again in September. Teams… there’s going to be more corners out there between now and August and then again in September. We’ve got a lot of time before we play the first regular season game,” added Beane.

Last year, Buffalo brought in Norman who played in head coach Sean McDermott’s system when he was in Carolina. Norman inked a one-year $6 million pact with the Bills and could be a candidate to re-sign. Another option could be Richard Sherman, who has expressed admiration for the Bills.
