Buffalo Bills at Miami Dolphins: Team connections

#Bills, #Dolphins connections between the rosters:

The Buffalo Bills will visit the Miami Dolphins for a season-finale meeting on Sunday evening in Week 18.

It’s a brand new NFL weekend with plenty on the line for both teams… specifically the AFC East title. But for some on the Bills (10-6) and Dolphins (11-5) there is a bit more at stake than others.

That’s because multiple players or coaches for both sides are going to be playing against their former teams. That can create a little bit of extra motivation for them heading into Sunday… as expected.

With that, here’s a quick list of connections the two teams have with one another ahead of the upcoming matchup at Hard Rock Stadium:

Bills’ Reid Ferguson jokingly introduces himself to Brandon Beane (video)

#Bills’ Reid Ferguson jokingly introduces himself to Brandon Beane (video):

The Bills used the tried-and-test method during roster cut-down day.

Last week, NFL teams had to cut down their roster to 53 players. In doing so, general manager Brandon Beane dusted off a move he often does at this time of the NFL year.

No player on the Bills has been cut more times by the team than Reid Ferguson. That’s because of a rule.

As a vested veteran, Ferguson is not subject to the waiver wire. If he was and was claimed by another NFL team, he’d have no choice but to join them.

Since he’s just an outright free agent, Beane will cut him and give Ferguson assurances that he’s going to be re-signed. The reason for doing that is to allow another player, such as linebacker Baylon Spector, to make the roster and then be placed on the injured reserve list. If the Bills placed Spector on the injured reserve list before roster cuts, his season would be over. Now he can be activated again in four weeks.

Make sense?

Beane often uses this measure to get around the rule and Ferguson decided to have a little fun with it at practice.

After re-signing with the Bills, Ferguson took to practice with his teammates and introduced himself to his “new” general manager.

Spectrum News caught the joke on the sideline and it can be found in the clip below:

Turns out, Josh Allen is a pretty good long snapper too (video)

Josh Allen is QB1 and also a backup:

Josh Allen, QB1 and… long snapper 2?

The Bills video department shared a clip from practice this week–one that we haven’t seen before. Allen is throwing a ball… between his legs.

Allen \decided at some point that he wanted to give long snapping a try. He won’t be replacing Reid Ferguson in the lineup any time soon, but one has to admit… Allen isn’t too bad.

Check out Allen’s long snapping skills on this one to punter Sam Martin below:

Who are locks to make the Bills’ 53-man roster on defense?

Who are locks to make the #Bills’ 53-man roster on defense?

The Buffalo Bills are gearing up for the start of 2023 training camp. Players are going to be fighting for both playing time and roster spots.

But if we’re being honest, some of those positions on the team are already sorted out.

Here is every player on the Bills roster that is already a roster lock to make the team on defense:

Bills teammates show support of Josh Allen during ‘The Match’

#Bills teammates had Josh’s back:

It wasn’t the best time in the end for Josh Allen at “The Match.”

Allen and teammate Patrick Mahomes lost on the final hole to Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady. It was easy to see Allen might’ve had the worst effort of the four on the course.

But that didn’t stop some of Allen’s Bills teammates from showing their support before, during, and even after the event.

Check out some of them rooting for their quarterback below:

Who is the new longest-tenured Buffalo Bills player?

Jerry Hughes previously held the title:

The Buffalo Bills technically hadn’t had Jerry Hughes on their roster for a few weeks. When the new NFL league year began (a.k.a. when free agency started in April), the defensive end became a free agent.

Despite the addition of pass rusher Von Miller and Shaq Lawson re-signing in Buffalo, there still remained a chance, albeit small, that the 34-year-old could return to the Bills.

That officially ended up not happening. On Tuesday, reports surfaced that Hughes had signed with his hometown team, the Houston Texans.

Hughes was viewed as a team leader and vocal member of the Bills. That often comes with the status that Hughes held for the past few years.

Following the 2018 season, defensive tackle Kyle Williams retired. Williams was the longest-tenured member of the team, and he handed that torch off to Hughes.

Now time to answer the question at hand: Who now carries that title in Buffalo?

The answer is long snapper Reid Ferguson.

Ferguson is only 28 but he’s still the holder of that honor. He is one of the only members of the team that was with the Bills before Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott arrived.

Ferguson first joined the Bills in May 2016 after that year’s NFL draft, signing as a UDFA. Technically defensive end Shaq Lawson joined the team a few days prior to Ferguson because he was actually pickedĀ  at the draft by Buffalo–but Lawson departed the Bills and has since returned.

Ferguson technically has had two stints in Buffalo as well, but it doesn’t matter in terms of longevity on the roster.

Ferguson technically was cut at the end of training camp in 2016. That season was the final one for Garrison Sanborn in Buffalo, who was the Bills’ long snapper from 2009-2016.

After clearing waivers, Ferguson went on to sign with Buffalo’s practice squad and stayed there in 2016, then the ensuing year in 2017 he took over the full-time snapping duties. It’s a job he’s held to this day as Ferguson has since signed two extensions with the Bills.

For those wondering, here’s how Ferguson feels about now being the “old man” in the locker room, at least in terms of tenure on the team:

Bills WR Cole Beasley offers to buy game tickets for unvaccinated fans

Bills WR Cole Beasley is tripling down on his anti-vaccine stance by offering to buy tickets for fans who won’t get COVID vaccinations.

Buffalo Bills receiver Cole Beasley has been perhaps the most outspoken NFL player when it comes to his own anti-vaccine views, and now, he’s made it clear that he’s willing to go above and beyond to support Bills fans who believe the way he does.

Per Jason Wolf of the Buffalo News, Beasley and long-snapper Reid Ferguson have responded to the Bills’ mandate that proof of vaccination is required to attend games at Highmark Stadium, and the fans who refuse to get vaccinated and are thus planning to see the Bills in away games, by offering to make sure those fans have tickets for away games.

At this time, only four teams — the Seahawks, Raiders, Saints, and Bills — require proof of vaccination as a condition for attendance in their home stadiums. Which means that the Bills’ Week 2 game at Miami, as well as road games against the Chiefs, Titans, Jaguars, Jets, Buccaneers, and Patriots would be open season for Bills fans who refuse to protect themselves against COVID-19 in what has been proven to be the most effective method to date.

Beasley responded to one Bills fan who refuses to get the shots thusly:

ā€œIā€™ve had Covid, so in my opinion, Iā€™ve already got the antibodies,ā€ Hauquitz told the Buffalo News. ā€œI think theyā€™re just as good as the vaccine. The vaccine came out pretty rushed. I donā€™t really know all the information. In my opinion, thereā€™s so little information out there and it all seems to be one-sided. And then, personally, my religious beliefs. I think God created me for a purpose. He has a plan for my life. And whether I have the vaccine or not, Iā€™m taken care of.ā€

Hauquitz also said that when he got COVID, it was his decision to “take a chicken pox approach” and pass it along to his entire family, including his children, who range in age from 23 months to 12 years.

Ferguson is in on this, too.

Erie County, New York, where Buffalo is located, reported 1,449 new Covid-19 cases last week, a 10% increase from the previous week, according to health department data.

In July, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Director of theĀ National Institute of Allergy and Infectious DiseasesĀ (NIAID) and theĀ Chief Medical Advisor to the President, revealed that unvaccinated individuals account for virtually all ā€” 97 percent ā€” of the COVID hospitalizations and deaths in the United States. And just three states ā€” Florida, Texas, and Missouri; three states with lower vaccination rates ā€” accounted for 40 percent of all cases nationwide.Ā  For the second week in a row, one in five of all cases occurred in Florida alone.Ā  And within communities, these cases were primarily among unvaccinated people.

Perhaps Beasley has some extra cash lying around due to his professed intent to approve of vaccines if he and his family can profit from them.

Perhaps not. As for the Bills fans looking to see their team this way, thoughts and prayers to them, and everybody they come into contact with.

5 most surprising cuts made by the Buffalo Bills

5 most surprising cuts made by the #Bills:

The Buffalo Bills trimmed their roster from near 80 men to 53 on Tuesday in accordance with the NFLā€™s deadline.

Itā€™s always a tough day across the league, but thatā€™s the nature of business. The day also comes with more than a handful of surprises.

With that, here are the fiveĀ  most head-turning cuts made by the Bills:

Bills announce 7 team captains for 2020

Buffalo Bills 2020 team captains.

Going into a new season, the Buffalo Bills announced their team captains following Wednesday’s practice. Typically as voted on by the players, the following will be captains for the 2020 season:

  • QB Josh Allen
  • OL Dion Dawkins
  • LB Tremaine Edmunds
  • DE Jerry Hughes
  • S Jordan Poyer
  • LS Reid Ferguson
  • WR/ KR Andre Roberts

Allen, Edmunds, Dawkins, and Ferguson return to their duties as captains. Those four earned their first tenure as team leaders in 2019. Prior captains needing replacing from last season include kicker Stephen Hauschka and linebacker Lorenzo Alexander.

Poyer, Roberts and Hughes are your new additions. In a bit of a twist, the Bills actually named seven total captains when typically a team announces six. Those six will have two allocated to each phase of the game, offense, defense and special teams. Instead, it appears Buffalo have three on defense this season via Poyer, Hughes and Edmunds.
