Former Bills CB Tre’Davious White to visit Rams

As free agency rolls on, the Rams are set to meet with All-Pro corner Tre’Davious White.

Seven-year NFL veteran and two time All-Pro corner Tre’Davious White is set to meet with Rams officials this week. The first-round pick from LSU was designated as a post June-1st cut by Buffalo after an injury filled last couple of years.

When healthy, White was one of the best DBs in the NFL. However, White suffered a torn ACL in November 2021 and has missed 30 games over the past three years. Continuing his injury issues, White suffered a lower leg injury during the Bills’ week 4 2023 matchup against the Miami Dolphins, missing the rest of the season.

However when healthy, White is a lockdown corner. White has 18 interceptions, 5 forced fumbles and 5 fumble recoveries in his career. With the Rams possessing one of the best strength and conditioning programs in the NFL, perhaps a move to the Rams and a warmer climate could be what gets his health back on track.

White is set to meet with the Raiders this week as well. The Rams currently have $23.5 million in available cap space if they want to move forward with the signing.

Tre White is missed by USC and is enduring a difficult season at Louisville

Would Tre White like to revise his decision to transfer to Louisville? USC really could have used him this season.

The USC men’s basketball season has gone horribly wrong. As we piece together various reasons for the collapse, we obviously know that Andy Enfield is failing at his job. That is by far the number one reason, but it’s far too simplistic an explanation. Other reasons exist as well, and it’s worth spending a little time to explore those reasons.

This isn’t by any means an attempt to let Andy Enfield off the hook. We think he should be fired if USC fails to make the NCAA Tournament, which looks like a probable outcome right now. Nevertheless, there are other reasons for this dramatic decline, and we should try to paint a fuller picture of this bitter disappointment for the Trojans.

One of many non-Enfield reasons for the Trojans’ struggles this season is the absence of Tre White. I’m not sure people realize — in light of USC’s problems — how valuable Tre White was to last season’s team, which made the NCAA Tournament.

White was a bigger, longer defender who was good for some timely baskets but who, more than that, was the worker-bee type of player Andy Enfield loves and knows how to coach well.

We can see that Enfield can’t coach blue-chip talent very smoothly, but Enfield — a good coach — has worked wonders with blue-collar guys. White was one of them. He followed in the Chevez Goodwin, Drew Peterson mold, a hungry player who wasn’t flashy but always gave great effort at the defensive end of the floor. USC’s defense hasn’t been up to par this season. White’s effort and length made the Trojans so much better at that end. USC really misses him.

What is especially unfortunate here is that White isn’t getting a better outcome — or better coaching — at his new stop. Louisville is a mess under coach Kenny Payne. The Cardinal are 5-7 and going nowhere. Payne is likely to be fired by the end of the season if not sooner.

One wonders if White would like to revise his decision to transfer to Louisville. Alas, he can’t revoke that decision in time to change USC’s fortunes in 2024.

Tre White bails Louisville, coach Kenny Payne out of home loss to New Mexico State

Tre White had 22 points including a game-tying three to help lead the Louisville Cardinals to a narrow win over the New Mexico State Aggies.

If it weren’t for some late-game heroics by forward Tre White, the Louisville Cardinals would have suffered a home loss to a sub-250 ranked team at KenPom in New Mexico State, and you can bet the calls for coach Kenny Payne’s job would have reached a fever pitch.

However, White helped lead the Cardinals on an 8-0 run in the closing minute of regulation, including drilling a wide-open three-pointer to tie the game with less than 30 seconds to go, which forced overtime where Louisville was able to outscore the Aggies and take home a 90-84 win.

The Cardinals are now 3-3 on the season, with a home loss to Chattanooga and a pair of neutral site losses to No. 19 Texas (by just one point) and Indiana in the Empire Classic.

Louisville fans no doubt hoped the strong performances over Feast Week, even though they were both losses, would carry over to this buy-in game against the Aggies – but instead the Cardinals shot only 44.6% from the field and 20% (4-20) from beyond the arc, only managing to find any offense at the free throw line – where they ended up a whopping 49(!) times and converted 36.

New Mexico State played the final 20 seconds of overtime with only four players after six different Aggies fouled out of the contest, and their own inability to convert from deep (27.8%) or the charity stripe (52.9%) ultimately prevented them from picking up a very nice road win in Jason Hooten’s first season at the helm for the rebuilding Aggies – who have an entirely new team after last year’s season was suspended due to serious hazing allegations.

White’s 22 points were second on the team behind a monster performance from Skyy Clark, who had 29 total points on 6-8 shooting thanks to a 15-16 performance at the stripe.

Louisville will host Bellarmine (2-4) on Wednesday, ranked No. 229 at KenPom, before going on the road to take on Virginia Tech on December 3 in the first conference game of the year for Payne’s squad.

USC has a loaded roster, but the loss of Tre White could be significant

USC has so many good pieces, but one piece it lost from last season is Tre White. We’ll see how much this matters.

USC has a loaded roster entering this basketball season. However, there is one noticeable hole in the roster, as Kevin Sweeney of Sports Illustrated told us in a preseason conversation:

“What’s unique about it is they (USC) really don’t have a traditional power forward, and part of that is to lose Tre White to the portal,” Sweeney told us. “He was really in my mind, looking back now, a perfect fit for this team because he’s got a little bit of skill offensively, but can play hard, can rebound, can play the three and the four. If you’re looking at this roster and say, what’s the one missing piece, you say it’s a 6-7 guy, you can play either forward spot and impact the game defensively. You do not necessarily need his number called a ton offensively. That’s Tre White. Because of that, you get into some interesting scenarios. Are you going to play very small with potentially (Isaiah) Collier, (Boogie) Ellis, Kobe Johnson, and then (D.J.) Rodman, or are you going to play two traditional bigs with Vince (Iwuchukwu) and Josh Morgan?”

Not having Tre White will create some complications for Andy Enfield as he seeks the best lineup combinations for USC basketball this season.

Tre White transfer requires Andy Enfield to do more work in the portal

Recruiting Bronny James, if achieved, won’t be enough for #USC. Enfield has to get a prime portal piece after Tre White left.

The hype surrounding USC basketball is connected to the distinct possibility that Bronny James will join the program, joining top recruit Isaiah Collier and returning star Boogie Ellis.

It is easy to think that if USC successfully recruits Bronny James, it will have all it needs to become an elite team in 2024.

Not so.

The Tre White transfer deprives USC of a solid wing defender who is capable of being a role-player scorer, the kind of supporting-cast player a Final Four contender needs. Sure, having a Bronny-Collier-Ellis backcourt is great, but that’s too much offense and not enough defense. It’s also a lot of guards and not as much size.

USC needs a physical guard and/or a stretch four with a little more length, power, and proven defensive acumen. Enfield has to get at least one of those pieces, if not both, in the transfer portal.

Getting Bronny would be great, but let’s not think that fills the remaining roster need for USC.

It would seem that Tre White transferring means a portal addition is in the works. Enfield simply needs to make sure he delivers and gives USC a high-quality piece in exchange for White’s departure.

Tre White transferring from USC changes one thing for Bronny James

The Tre White transfer does change one part of the larger equation for Bronny James. We will explain this point. #USC

The transfer of Tre White from USC is, on the surface, somewhat concerning for the Trojans. White had a strong freshman season. He was part of the All-Pac-12 Freshman Team. He was going to give USC depth on the wings, providing defense alongside Kobe Johnson. Andy Enfield was in a position to play Johnson and White interchangeably so that both players could stay fresh. USC could blend offense and defense with multiple lineup combinations. Now USC doesn’t have that same degree of depth. It is concerning.

However: It also creates a situation in which Bronny James can get more playing time.

Boogie Ellis returning to USC complicated Bronny’s outlook, but the decommitment of Silas Demary changed that calculus. The Tre White transfer makes it a lot easier to imagine a situation in which two of three players — Bronny, Isaiah Collier, and Boogie — are on the floor at the same time. Kobe Johnson is almost certain to be a 33-minutes-per-game player, being the high-workload defensive player Drew Peterson was last season.

If USC loses depth as a result of Tre White’s departure, it makes it easier for Andy Enfield to keep Bronny James on the floor. It would be up to Bronny to justify extended minutes with his level of play, but if he’s up to the task, Bronny now has a clearer path toward playing the level of minutes he would certainly want to have in college basketball.

Tre White transfers from USC basketball, raising lots of questions

This *does* raise lots of questions. Crucially: Are they good questions or bad questions? This is getting complicated. #USC

We did not see this one coming.

Tre White, who was part of the 2023 Pac-12 All-Freshman Team and gave USC consistent and vital production as a role player behind Boogie Ellis and Drew Peterson this past season, has decided to transfer.

There is a lot to process here. Without going too deep into the weeds, let’s briefly mention what this could mean for the Trojans’ roster next season:

First and foremost, this continues to increase the odds that Bronny James is coming to USC. It’s another non-frontcourt roster spot which opens up, and it actually introduces the possibility that Isaiah Collier, Boogie Ellis, and Bronny could all be on the court at the same time.

If Andy Enfield is thinking about his roster, this deprives him of a wing defender, but because Kobe Johnson is such a good wing defender to begin with, USC might have felt this was a case of roster redundancy, making White — though a very good player — not an absolutely essential piece of this roster.

This transfer does make it even more important for USC to find a high-value piece in the transfer portal. Some quality prospects are out there. White was going to be a very good player for USC next season, so Enfield has to make sure he gets a substantial replacement. It doesn’t have to be a wing, but it does have to be at least as good as White was projected to be, if not better.

There’s a lot more to say about this, but those are the main items to mention right off the bat. Stay with us for more coverage of the USC hoops offseason and the Bronny James situation.

Tre White steps up against Arizona State with 13 huge points

Boogie Ellis did the heavy lifting again, but Tre White stepped up with 13 points in the win.

The USC Trojans nearly saw their bubble hopes take a giant hit on Saturday night. In the final game of the Pac-12 regular season, Arizona State gave USC everything it could handle.

Fortunately, the Trojans survived with a 68-65 win at the Galen Center. Boogie Ellis did the heavy lifting again, and Drew Peterson played despite suffering an injury in the game against Arizona on Thursday.

However, there was one other bright spot: Tre White stepping up when USC needed it most. White finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds to go with a pair of assists, providing a massive spark for USC.

The only players to finish with double-digit points were Ellis and White, and the former Pac-12 Freshman of the Week ended the regular season on a positive note.

Kobe Johnson had just 4 points, Reese Dixon-Waters finished with 3 points, and Joshua Morgan had just 1 point as USC nearly lost to the Sun Devils. Nonetheless, White did what the Trojans were hoping for. He stepped up.

With USC’s offense being led by Boogie Ellis, Andy Enfield’s team enters the Pac-12 Tournament with the need to cultivate more production from more sources, but a strong showing from Tre White is encouraging with the NCAA Tournament on the horizon.

USC’s Tre White earns Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors

Tre White delivered two impressive clutch performances for #USC vs the Washington schools. He came up big for Andy Enfield.

The USC Trojans are getting close to the top of the Pac-12 Conference and just won their fourth straight game by defeating Washington.

In the win against the Huskies, Tre White and Kobe Johnson stepped up when both Boogie Ellis and Drew Peterson struggled from the field and Vince Iwuchukwu was limited by foul trouble.

White led the Trojans with 22 points and 8 rebounds on 10-16 shooting from the field. Against Washington State a few days earlier, White scored 14 points to help Boogie and Peterson carry the workload.

As such, White was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week after two impressive performances for a USC team already thin on the bench. It really needed someone from the supporting cast to deliver the goods. White was ready.

In total, White scored 36 points with 10 rebounds and 5 assists during the week.

In the eight games prior to the Washington State contest, White scored double digits just three times.

Joshua Morgan got injured, and Reese Dixon-Waters also missed the Washington game, forcing head coach Andy Enfield to rely more on White.

He answered the call, and the freshman should continue to see an increased role down the stretch, especially with the Trojans nipping at the heels of both Arizona and UCLA.

The Trojans are off until a huge game against Oregon on Thursday, and let’s see if Tre White can continue to play at a high level.

Mapping out USC’s path to the NCAA Tournament: must-win games, overall targets, and more

Kobe Johnson, Tre White stepped up big for USC against Washington

With Boogie Ellis and Drew Peterson struggling from the field vs U-Dub, Kobe Johnson and Tre White made winning plays.

So far this season, the USC Trojans have mostly relied on Drew Peterson and Boogie Ellis to get the job done on a nightly basis. When those players had off nights, it would be a tough game for the Trojans.

However, Saturday night was an encouraging sign. The Trojans beat Washington, 80-74, and Ellis and Peterson each shot just 4-14 from the field and finished with a combined 25 points. They combined for 37 against UCLA and 43 against Washington State.

The bench didn’t do much against Washington, scoring six total points, but two players stepped up big: Kobe Johnson and Tre White. After the game, head coach Andy Enfield mentioned both of those players.

Tre White, who is averaging 10 PPG this season, led USC with 22 points on 10-16 shooting and added 8 rebounds in a strong effort from the freshman.

Kobe Johnson, a sophomore who played sparingly last season, came in averaging just 8.1 PPG. However, he emerged with 21 points on 5-7 from the field and a perfect 9-9 from the free-throw line to give USC a much-needed boost in a game they couldn’t afford to lose. Johnson also came up with a drawn charge and a huge steal in the final minutes to seal the win. Johnson’s effort plays and his defensive hustle mean even more than his points, but his big buckets have been massive the past few games against the Washington schools.

Johnson hit two huge three-pointers down the stretch against Washington, and the Trojans did all of this without Reese Dixon-Waters. Overall, it was a very positive night for USC, and Enfield and the Trojans are hoping that Johnson and White can continue to play like this.
