Brandin Echols with 30-yard pick-six off Tua Tagovailoa

Brandin Echols got the Jets on the scoreboard with a pick-six

The New York Jets’ offense was going nowhere. Leave it to Brandin Echols and the defense to put some jump into the team on Black Friday.

Trailing 10-0 late in the second quarter against the Miami Dolphins on Friday at MetLife, Echols jumped a route and was off and running after picking off the Tua Tagovailoa pass.

Thirty yards later, he was in the end zone and the Jets were within 10-6 of the AFC East leaders.

That’s right, 10-6, because Greg Zuerlein missed the PAT.

Tim Boyle, who replaced an ineffective Zach Wilson as the Jets’ starting quarterback, was not doing much in the first 30 minutes.

He completed 7 of 10 passes for all of 35 yards.

Jets cornerback Brandin Echols has helped plug the gap in the slot while Michael Carter II is out with an injury. He got himself into the highlight reel in a big way during Friday’s game against the Miami Dolphins with an interception returned for a touchdown off of Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Echols stepped in front of a pass intended for Dolphins (and former Jets) wide receiver Braxton Berrios and returned it 30 yards for the score.

6 takeaways from Jets’ 32-6 blowout loss to Bills

Here are our six immediate takeaways from the Jets’ 32-6 lopsided defeat to the Bills in Week 11.

The New York Jets are gradually falling out of the AFC playoff race following a 32-6 defeat to the Buffalo Bills in Week 11. With the team’s third consecutive loss, the Jets are now 4-6, and the hopes of Aaron Rodgers making a late-season return to the offense are waning.

For what seems like the billionth time this season, the offense was stagnant, producing just six points on the road in what was essentially a must-win game. Since posting 20 points against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 6, the Jets have scored 13 or fewer points in four straight games out of their bye week.

Here are our six immediate takeaways from the Jets’ 32-6 lopsided defeat to the Bills in Week 11.

Taking a look back at the Jets’ 2021 NFL draft class

The Jets released RB Michael Carter on Tuesday and we recap how the team’s 2021 NFL draft class has fared thus far.

The New York Jets are amid a two-game skid right now, being outscored by the Los Angeles Chargers and the Las Vegas Raiders 43-18 in the last two weeks. The Jets held a players-only meeting on Tuesday, and running back Michael Carter was released shortly after.

We are now in the third year of Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas being the head coach-general manager duo for the Jets. The 2021 NFL draft was the first one Saleh and Douglas took part in together, beginning a regime that had fans in New York optimistic about the future.

With the offense struggling with Zach Wilson under center, and Carter being released, now is as good a time as ever to recap how New York’s 2021 NFL draft class has fared thus far.

Brandin Echols out, D.J. Reed in concussion protocol

The Jets have a few injuries in the cornerback room.

The Jets are dealing with a couple of injuries in the secondary heading into Week 5. Head coach Robert Saleh provided updates Wednesday.

Cornerback Brandin Echols has a hamstring injury and he will not play Sunday against the Denver Broncos. He may even miss multiple weeks. It’s possible he also misses Week 6 against the Philadelphia Eagles with the bye week coming in Week 7 to give him extra rest.

In addition, cornerback D.J. Reed is in the concussion protocol. There is a good chance Reed will also miss Sunday’s game in Denver. No player has suffered a concussion and then played the following week since Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett last season in Week 7.

If Reed and Echols can’t go, the Jets would have an interesting decision to make at the position. Will they start Bryce Hall? Will they pull from elsewhere?

The Jets worked out corners Wednesday including nine-year veteran Terrance Mitchell. The 31-year-old played in 11 games last season for the Tennessee Titans, recording 39 tackles and an interception. It’s possible the Jets add him to the practice squad. New York also brought back cornerback Craig James to the practice squad on Tuesday and also added corners Tae Hayes and Kalon Barnes.

The Jets are also adding secondary depth in the form of sixth-round pick Jarrick Bernard-Converse. The Jets activated the 21-day practice window for both him and fourth-round rookie offensive tackle Carter Warren.

Bernard-Converse was on the Physically Unable to Perform list while Warren spent the first four weeks of the season on injured reserve.

Watch: Brandin Echols records pick-six vs. Giants

Brandin Echols recorded a pick-six against the Giants in the Jets’ preseason finale on Sunday.

The New York Jets witnessed Aaron Rodgers connect with Garrett Wilson for a touchdown on the second drive of the game, and now the defense is getting involved. In Sunday’s preseason finale against the New York Giants, Brandin Echols recorded a pick-six for the Jets.

The play began with New York’s defensive front generating pressure on Tommy DeVito, the third-string quarterback of the Giants. DeVito was targeting David Sills and delivered a late pass, allowing Echols to jump the route and create a massive play for the Jets.

Echols will begin the upcoming season with a one-game suspension. Even though he won’t be available in Week 1, Echols could emerge as a valuable depth option at cornerback behind Sauce Gardner, DJ Reed, and Michael Carter II.

Jets CB Brandin Echols suspended one game by league

Brandin Echols suspended

The NFL suspended Jets cornerback Brandon Echols for one game, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. The league did not give a specific reason for the suspension. Echols will miss New York’s season opener on Monday, September 11 against the Buffalo Bills.

Echols recently entered a diversionary program to avoid assault by auto charges from a high-speed crash from 2022 that partially paralyzed another person. As Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper writes, it’s possible the suspension is related to that.

Echols started 14 games at cornerback as a rookie. He was more of a special teams player in 2022 while adding depth behind Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed.

Jets final Week 15 report: White, Davis out, Quinnen Williams questionable

Jets final Week 15 report: White, Davis out, Quinnen Williams questionable

Three players have been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions.

Mike White (ribs), Corey Davis (concussion) and Brandin Echols (quad) all will not play in Week 15.

White was not medically cleared after X-rays revealed he has fractured ribs suffered in Week 14 against the Bills. White was hoping to play against the Lions but doctors were concerned about him taking another hit and suffering further damage. Zach Wilson will start and Joe Flacco will be the backup.

Davis suffered a concussion against the Bills and has not yet cleared concussion protocol. His absence will provide more opportunities for Elijah Moore and Denzel Mims and also means Jeff Smith will likely be active for the first time since Week 11 against the Patriots.

Echols’ injury also came in Week 14 and was already ruled out Monday with his quad injury. His being out means Bryce Hall could be active for only the second time this season and the first time since Week 1.

Quinnen Williams did not practice all week but has not yet been ruled out. He remains “50/50” for Sunday and is listed as questionable. The Jets could really use Williams against a Lions team that has two excellent running backs in D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams. The Jets could call up Tanzel Smart from the practice squad one last time as insurance.

Duane Brown, George Fant, John Franklin-Myers and Micheal Clemons all practiced in full and were taken off the injury report.

For the Lions, two players are out: guard Kayode Awosika (ankle) and LB Derrick Barnes (knee).

Defensive lineman Michael Brockers (illness) is doubtful after missing Thursday and Friday.

FB Jason Cabinda (ankle), CB Mike Hughes (illness), DL Aidan Hutchinson (illness) and center Frank Ragnow (illness) are all questionable. Cabinda,  Hutchinson and Ragnow were able to practice Friday while Hughes did not.

Jets provide injury updates on Mike White, Quinnen Williams

Injury updates on White, Williams and others

The Jets had a few injury scares during Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills. For the most part, that’s all they were, just quick scares.

Head coach Robert Saleh provided updates on the injuries from Sunday, including the statuses of quarterback Mike White (ribs) and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams (calf).

Both players are considered day-to-day. Saleh is hopeful White can start on Sunday and that the Jets are preparing as if White will start in Week 15 against the Lions.

“He’s tough as nails,” Saleh said about White. “He was playing really, really well.”

White took numerous shots during the game and went to the hospital as a precautionary measure. He was cleared and flew home with the team.

Quinnen Williams is closer to 50/50 at this point. Saleh said it’s too early in the week to know for sure. The calf injury is similar to the one Williams had during training camp.

Everyone was holding their breath when Williams went down, hoping it wasn’t a serious non-contact knee injury. He was taken to the locker room and was ruled questionable to return before eventually being ruled out with a calf injury, not a knee injury, which was a positive sign.

Wide receiver Corey Davis is in concussion protocol. He exited Sunday’s game with what was described as a head injury. The good news is Saleh said Davis was “feeling really good today” and that the team is hopeful he’ll be available for Sunday.

Two players are out this week, including one whose season could be over. Cornerback Brandin Echols will not play Sunday with a quadriceps injury and linebacker Marcell Harris is out with an ankle injury. Saleh added that Harris’ injury could be season-ending.
