Tommy and James Brockermeyer commit to Alabama over Texas

Twin brothers OT Tommy and OC James Brockermeyer have committed to Alabama, choosing the Crimson Tide over Auburn, LSU, and Texas.

Two of the most prized recruits in the 2021 class will be heading to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to play for Nick Saban.

Twin brothers Tommy and James Brockermeyer have committed to Alabama, choosing the Crimson Tide over Auburn, LSU, and Texas.

Tommy is a five-star prospect and is the top tackle in the 2021 class. He is also ranked No. 5 on the 247Sports composite and the highest-ranked player in the state of Texas.

For James, he is not as highly ranked as his brother but is still the top offensive center. Overall, he sits at No. 188 on the 247Sports composite and No. 32 in the state of Texas.

Losing both Tommy and James is a major loss for Herb Hand and Tom Herman. A rare occasion that Texas loses a highly ranked in-state battle, Tommy was supposed to be the top dog in the Longhorns’ 2021 class.

To add injury to insult, older brother Luke Brockermeyer is already on the roster. Their father, Blake Brockermeyer, also played offensive tackle for the Longhorns.

With left tackle Samuel Cosmi and center Derek Kerstetter more than likely off to the NFL after the 2020 season, the Brockermeyer brothers would have had the opportunity to start on the offensive line right away.

If Texas wants to find another blue-chip offensive lineman for the 2021 class, they will have to switch their attention to four-star Savion Byrd. Coming out of Duncanville High School, Byrd is projected to sign with Sonny Dykes and the SMU Mustangs. Herb Hand will have some making up to do.

Broncos won’t be signing OL Jason Peters

Nine-time Pro Bowler Jason Peters has agreed to re-sign with the Eagles.

The Philadelphia Eagles are re-signing left tackle Jason Peters, multiple outlets reported Tuesday (via Eagles Wire).

Peters (6-4, 328 pounds) is a 28-year-old tackle who entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Arkansas with the Buffalo Bills in 2004. After spending the first five years of his career in Buffalo, Peters was traded to Philadelphia in 2009.

Peters has had a decorated career, earning nine Pro Bowl nods, two first-team All-Pro selections and four second-team All-Pro nods. He is a member of the NFL’s 2010s All-Decade Team and he helped the Eagles win Super Bowl LII in 2017 (Peters wasn’t healthy for the Super Bowl but he was a key member of the team before suffering an injury).

Peters was healthy for 13 games last season. In those contests, he was penalized nine times and allowed three sacks, according to STATS LLC. In his career, Peters has averaged 0.478 penalties per contest and 0.29 sacks allowed per game.

After the Denver Broncos did not select an offensive tackle in the NFL draft, there was speculation that the team might sign a veteran like Peters. Denver instead appears content to have Garett Bolles and Elijah Wilkinson compete for the starting left tackle job at training camp.

Countdown to Texas football: Best to wear No. 55

In returning to the countdown to kickoff series, Longhorns Wire remembers the best wear number 55 Connor Williams.

We are 55 days away from the scheduled kickoff of the 2020 college football season. Despite the Big Ten and PAC 12 announcing conference only schedules, the Big 12 remains with a full slate of games for most of their teams. The Longhorns still have South Florida, Louisiana State and Texas-El Paso on the schedule. In continuing the kickoff series, Longhorns Wire looks at the best to wear number 55. Currently Willie Tyler wears the number. He redshirted his sophomore year in 2019 after transferring from Iowa Western Community College.

Connor Williams, Offensive Tackle (2015-17)

JKevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

Connor Williams played three season for the Texas Longhorns before entering into the 2018 NFL Draft and forfeiting his remaining eligibility. He played and started 28 games during that time. He would start every game at left tackle as a freshman. He would earn Freshman All-American honors from three publications for his play.

In his sophomore season, Williams would be even better. He would start 11 games at left tackle for Texas. He earned consensus first team All-American honors. He became only the fourth sophomore in Longhorns history to earn that honor. The others were Earl Thomas, Hub Bechtol and Russell Erxleben.

As a junior in 2017, Williams found himself on the Maxwell Trophy, Outland Trophy and the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watchlists in the preseason. He would be listed on the pre-season All-American team as well as All-Big 12. He would only start five games that year due to injuries. He would declare for the 2018 NFL Draft.

The Dallas area native would get to stay home when the Dallas Cowboys selected him in the second round. In two years for the Cowboys, Williams played in 24 games, starting 21. He would be named starter at left guard his rookie year. In his second season, Connor would start 11 games and missed time due to arthroscopic knee surgery. Upon his return he would tear his ACL and be placed on the injured reserve.

Heading into 2020, Williams will once again have to battle for a starting spot with another Connor coming off injury. Williams and McGovern are both vying for starting roles at either center or left guard.

Accomplishments:

  • 2015 Freshman All-American
  • 2016 Consensus All-American
  • 2016 First-team All-Big 12
  • 2018 NFL Draft second round selection
  • 2017 Outland Trophy Semifinalist

Former Broncos OL Ryan Harris posts perfect response to viral tweet

Former Broncos offensive lineman Ryan Harris had a perfect response to a viral tweet on Twitter.

There’s been a viral tweet going around on Twitter that asks users to “describe your favorite sports moment, as boring as possible.”

Former offensive lineman Ryan Harris, who had three different stints with the Broncos during his career, posted a perfect response.

Harris, of course, is talking about quarterback Peyton Manning handing him the Vince Lombardi Trophy after the Broncos defeated the Panthers 24-10 in Super Bowl 50. Harris then gave the trophy to outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware.

Harris was selected by Denver in the third round of the 2007 NFL draft. He went on to play four seasons with the Broncos before spending a year with the Eagles. He went to camp with Denver in 2012 but didn’t make their 53-man roster.

After spending time with the Texans and Chiefs, Harris returned to the Broncos in 2015 and helped them win the Super Bowl. After playing a final season with the Steelers in 2016, Harris retired from the NFL.

Watch: New Notre Dame Commit Joe Alt’s Highlights

Curious to know more about Notre Dame’s newest commitment? Stop reading and watch his highlights right here!

Notre Dame landed their 12th commitment to the 2021 recruiting class on Monday as son of former NFL offensive tackle John, Joe Alt committed to the Fighting Irish.

Alt is the third offensive lineman to join the class as standout tackle Blake Fisher did so long ago and guard Pat Coogan made his commitment just a few short months ago.

So what is Notre Dame getting in Alt?

Well, first thing you should know is that the 6-7, 257 pounder out of Minneapolis plays tight end in high school and will transition to tackle at Notre Dame.

That doesn’t mean you can’t watch some of his best plays through his junior year of high school however.  If you want to see the standout, you can watch his highlights from his seventh through tenth games of last football season here.

Once you watch you’ll see that the move to offensive line should be pretty natural as Alt more than embraces the blocking part of the tight end position.

Thanks for checking it out and keep it locked to Fighting Irish Wire for everything Notre Dame athletics.

Draft Wire has Seahawks selecting another tackle in latest mock draft

Luke Easterling of USA TODAY’s Draft Wire has the Seattle Seahawks selecting tackle Jackson Carman out of Clemson in his latest mock draft.

Luke Easterling of USA TODAY’s Draft Wire is convinced the Seattle Seahawks will be selecting an offensive tackle in the 2021 NFL Draft.

In his mock draft from two weeks ago, Easterling projected Texas tackle Samuel Cosmi out of Texas to Seattle. This week, he’s sticking with the position, but mocking a different tackle to the Seahawks  . . . Clemson’s Jackson Carman.

The swap is based on his latest mock draft which assumes Carman’s Clemson teammate, quarterback Trevor Lawrence, isn’t selected at No.1 overall, but instead falls to the Jaguars with the No. 2 pick.

Easterling’s draft order is based on the latest Super Bowl odds.

The Seahawks are always looking for ways to protect superstar QB Russell Wilson and have already made some changes to the starting lineup for the 2020 season.

Depending on how things play out, Seattle very well could be looking at some prospects to plug some holes by the start of next year.

Here’s a look at some lesser-known options the Seahawks could pursue in the 2021 NFL Draft.
