Former Alabama OL James Brockermeyer expected to transfer to TCU

The former Alabama center expected to transfer to Big 12 program

Just a few days ago Alabama Crimson Tide center [autotag]James Brockeymeyer[/autotag] announced his intentions of entering the NCAA transfer portal with the caveat that he was to not be contacted by college football programs. Generally speaking, when a player has a “do not contact” tag attached to their portal entry, the said player likely has a destination already in mind.

That appears to be the case for Brockermeyer with the reports surfacing on Sunday afternoon that the redshirt junior is expected to transfer to the TCU Horned Frogs.

Brockermeyer was Alabama’s first-team center during the A-Day Game a couple of weeks ago while Washington transfer [autotag]Parker Brailsford[/autotag] was dealing with some personal issues.

Matt Zenitz of 247Sports was the first to report the news of Brockermery’s expected transfer destination.

Alabama center James Brockermeyer enters NCAA transfer portal

Alabama center James Brockermeyer is entering the transfer portal with a “do not contact” tag. He is the second scholarship player to enter the transfer portal in the latest transfer portal window.

The Alabama Crimson Tide football program saw its second scholarship player enter the transfer portal since the latest window opened up over a week ago. Redshirt junior center James Brockermeyer entered the transfer portal on Wednesday with a “do not contact” tag. This means Brockermeyer has an idea of which program he wants to transfer to. His preference is for other schools to not contact him once he officially enters the transfer portal.

In all likelihood, Brockermeyer will transfer to a school closer to home. The former four-star recruit is from Fort Worth, Texas. Several schools to keep an eye on are Texas, Baylor, and TCU.

In three seasons in Tuscaloosa, Brockermeyer played in five games at center. During the spring, he was competing for the starting center spot alongside junior Parker Brailsford. Now, he will look to finish out his college career elsewhere.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest regarding the Alabama football program and its involvement in the transfer portal.

Alabama football names this week’s Student-Athletes of the Week

Latham, Brooks, and Brockerymeyer have earned the honor of Student-Athletes of the Week!

On Thursday, the Alabama football team released this week’s Student-Athletes of the Week recipients.

Defensive lineman Jah-Marien Latham, wide receiver Ja’Corey Brooks, and offensive lineman James Brockermeyer have taken home the honor this week.

Latham is entering his fourth season in Tuscaloosa and began to see his role increase in the latter part of the 2022 season and should be in store for a solid year in 2023.

Brooks is a third-year player who is unquestionably one of the leaders on the Alabama offense heading into the 2023 season.

Brockermeyer is also entering his third season with the Crimson Tide and will likely be Alabama’s No. 2 center behind returning starter Seth McLaughlin.

Congratulations to these young men for their outstanding work in the classroom and on the gridiron.

Alabama Morning Drive: Nick Saban addresses Alabama’s road woes

Alabama football coach Nick Saban is looking for a different mindset when the Tide plays on the road.

Good morning, Tide fans! Welcome to our Friday edition of Alabama Morning Drive! I hope everyone has had a great week now that we have finally made it to the weekend.

Each Thursday night during the football season, Alabama head coach [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] takes part in “Hey Coach”, a call-in radio show for Tide fans to ask the ball coach some questions. This has also been a place where coach Saban has delivered some epic rants and memorable one-liners.

Last night coach Saban addressed something that has been an issue for his program for the last couple of seasons, road games. In 2021 Alabama lost on the road to Texas A&M but also struggled at Florida and at Auburn. The trip to Austin to face Texas is fresh on Tide fans’ memories as well.

Coach Saban believes the mentality of his team needs to change in order to play better on the road. Here is what Saban had to say.

It will be interesting to see if this message hits home with the Crimson Tide players or not. Alabama will not have a road game until Oct. 1 when they travel to Fayetteville to take on top-ten Arkansas.

Tom Herman discusses job security, Urban Meyer and recruiting

In his usual Monday press conference, Texas Longhorns head coach Tom Herman met with the media. A variety of topics including his job status

For the first time since his post game press conference following the West Virginia game, Texas head coach Tom Herman met with the media on Monday. It was his weekly press conference prior to facing Kansas on Saturday afternoon. There was no shortage of topics for Herman to discuss in regards to the future of Texas’ football program.

Herman dished on a topic that was brought up on the Big 12 Conference call, where Texas Christian head coach Gary Patterson was asked if this season counts. With everything they have dealt with this year, should this year be held against them?

“Yeah, it does. It would be unfair to every single player that put their body on the line that it doesn’t count.” Herman continued “or in some way that the result is lessened because of any circumstance outside of their control. I don’t think that is fair to the players, the coaches or the team. Now should any of us be judged by the craziness that is this season, that is for you to decide but I have my opinions.”

Texas’ head coach went on to say that he would keep those opinions to himself. The idea that this team shouldn’t be judged based on what is going on around them is a cop out. Based on the tone of Herman throughout the press conference gives you the perception that he doesn’t believe that he should be judged during a pandemic season. However, every team in FBS is dealing with the same issues and some others are thriving. Why isn’t he?

He immediately brought up the installation of new offenses and defenses as obstacles for this year. While the defense has started to catch up, the offense has seemed to regress over recent weeks. The way that Tom Herman spoke about everything they have dealt with seemed like excuses for a head coach on the proverbial hot seat. He referred to even playing this year as a ‘minor miracle.’

Herman was asked whether he was concerned at all about his job security given the countless rumors about Urban Meyer. “No not at all. I am concerned about our players. I am concerned about this program. I am concerned about beating Kansas. I am concerned about all of our goals still being in front of us.”

On the topic of the players hearing the rumors, Herman stated that it is really easy to deal with. In terms of them seeing the rumors, they are in the locker rooms, the meetings, they talk to the head coach so he can deal with those issues internally. He continued, “they know the truth. That is the mitigating factor in this is there is a section of people in this. Which is our program, our coaches and people intimately involved in our day to day operations of our enterprise. They know the truth. And then there’s rumors.”

Herman went on quite a bit of a tangent about these ‘rumors.’ He discussed at great length about people using agendas and claiming opinions on fact. These people hiding behind what Herman claimed “unnamed sources and things of that nature.” He did say that while they can handle the comical nature of these rumors with the team, recruiting is a different story.

“Very unfounded articles that again state opinion as fact,” Herman said. “That is very hard to defend against. If you are a competing recruiter what do you do? You press print. Then you say look this is true, it must be true.”

The negative recruiting is definitely a way for some schools to sway prospects from going to this school or that school. He would mention how impressionable these recruits are. Especially when so much negativity is written about the program, Herman reiterated that it is based on rumors and opinions that have no facts to be based off of.

To say that the negative recruiting based on reports in the media is as Herman would say “unfounded.” There were no rumors of Urban Meyer coming to Texas when this team lost out on both Tommy and James Brockermeyer, who opted for Alabama. Legacy players who had their grandfather, father and brother all come to Austin. Yet, Tom Herman and Herb Hand couldn’t seal the deal.

[lawrence-related id=21204,18783]

One could believe Quinn Ewers committing to Texas cost Jalen Milroe, that is quite believable. However, losing Ewers a matter of weeks later isn’t just due to rumors. The performance on the field against Texas Christian and Oklahoma might do that to you. Against these two teams, Herman is a combined 2-8. Losing those games consistently will do more harm than some report in an article can.

When one of your top recruits in the 2021 cycle decommits and commits to your biggest rival, that says something. When he does an interview with the local newspaper and states that he wants to be around “coaches who know what they are doing,” that says something. Point blank there is a lot more going on at Texas than a report.

Herman stated that he and Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte are aligned. He mentioned that Del Conte has assured him of his support and the support of university leadership. Which is an odd statement for Herman to make. Chris Del Conte is one of the more active athletic directors in terms of social media.

He congratulates coaches at every turn and their teams after big wins. He hasn’t spoken in weeks about Tom Herman or the football team. The perception here is Herman stood in front of the media and gave his own vote of confidence. Herman even went as far to say that the leadership believes he and his staff would be in Austin for many, many years.

There is one thing that wasn’t said today by Tom Herman that can be worse than the words that he actually said. Not once did he ever take ownership and accountability. The mark of true leader is standing before everyone and owning up to the mistakes and issues plaguing this team in all areas. That is a leader that people will follow. Chalking it up to extenuating circumstances, you can call that is a loser’s mentality.

Locked on Longhorns Podcast: ‘Ewers decommits, Herman out?’

With Quinn Ewers being the latest prospect to decommit, Locked on Longhorns Podcast dives into the root of the problem. Is it Tom Herman?

It has been a wild 24 hours in Austin for the Texas Longhorns football team. It all started with rumblings of the top 2022 recruit having second thoughts about his decision to commit to the University of Texas. That was followed shortly by Quinn Ewers announcing that he would be looking elsewhere. So where do we start as we unpack the situation? The Longhorns have seen a mass exodus as of late in terms of recruits deciding to play elsewhere and players leaving through the transfer portal.

Does this fall on the teams lack of execution? Does this fall on the offenses struggles in big games? Does this fall on the team’s performances as a whole? Or does this fall directly at the feet of Tom Herman? One could make a case for all of the above but that all stems from the head coach. When things don’t go well it begins and ends with him. We discuss the fall out of losing out on yet another Texas product heading to another state to play his collegiate football career.

The issues and frustrations with the current head coach go far beyond just recruiting. The product on the field is a big issue. The fact that ever since that 2018 season where Sam Ehlinger proclaimed that Texas was back, they have been anything but back. They are just 11-7 in the 18 games following that proclamation. Plus a look forward at the top 10 matchup with Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Texas Football: The Longhorns need to decommit from Tom Herman

With the latest news of top 2022 recruit Quinn Ewers decommitting, it is time the Texas Longhorns move on from Tom Herman.

The Texas Longhorns are a team that has underperformed for the last decade. It started with the decline under long-time coach Mack Brown you spent 16 seasons in Austin. That was followed up by a disaster of a three-season run by Charlie Strong and now a less than stellar campaign under Tom Herman. Herman did lead them to three consecutive bowl games in which they won. However, only one Big 12 Championship game appearance and one New Years Six bowl isn’t enough.

The University of Texas generates more revenue than any school in the country. They have begun to work on upgrading their facilities and the stadium. Which helps when it comes to recruiting and visits each year by top recruits. Now they need the head coach that is going to get them there. They thought they had the guy in Tom Herman.

Herman was the offensive coordinator at Ohio State when they won the National Championship in 2015 along with current defensive coordinator Chris Ash. They improved to 7-6 in Herman’s first year from the 5-7 2016 season under Strong. In 2018 they won double-digit games, defeated Oklahoma, played in their first conference title game since 2009 and won a New Years Six game. That year they defeated the No. 6 ranked Georgia Bulldogs.

Since that run in 2018, it has been downhill for the Longhorns. They have won just 11 games with seven losses in the 18 games following. Under Tom Herman the team is 10-7 as a ranked team playing an unranked opponent. Losing seven games to unranked teams shouldn’t sit well with Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte. Not to even mention the recruiting aspect, but we will get there momentarily.

This season he had the opportunity for a clean slate and CDC has stated numerous times that Herman knows you only get this one chance. He brought in Ash and Mike Yurcich from Ohio State. The team looked solid in the first game against an inferior opponent in UTEP. Since that game they struggled with a Texas Tech team that has won just once in conference play.

They lost to a TCU team that Herman has struggled with his entire tenure but was blown out by Oklahoma. They forced overtime against the Sooners and in the Tech game because of the quarterback. Sam Ehlinger has saved this team time and time again. The Longhorns did win their last game against Baylor, who has struggled out of the gate. They handled a Kansas team but lost to West Virginia and now the Longhorns.

There isn’t anything that this team has done on the field to lead you to believe they are trending in the right direction. The 2018 season looks like an aberration on the Herman resume. He won at Houston but that hasn’t translated to Austin. Now that is starting to leak into recruiting. This isn’t something new.

The first domino to fall in the downward spiral was the legacy twins. James and Tommy Brockermeyer were set to join the Texas Longhorns as third generation talents. Their grandfather and father played for the Longhorns. Their brother Luke is currently on the team. However, the constant failing on the football field, the lack of development pushed them to the University of Alabama.

Shortly after securing the commitment of Quinn Ewers, the Longhorns lost another top recruit in Jalen Milroe. Again he is heading to Alabama. The last one being the decommitment of Ewers. He likely is now heading to Ohio State.

In 2017 the Longhorns ranked 25th in the 247Composite team rankings. They followed that up with a top three classes in 2018, 2019. The finished the 2020 class with the No. 8 ranked class. This next class not anywhere near that level. They currently sit at 17th for the 2021 class after losing out on the Brockermeyers, Milroe and even Billy Bowman.

Regardless of the buyout for Tom Herman, the Longhorns need to make it happen. They shouldn’t be a middle of the road football team. They have finances, they have the updated facilities, they need the football coach. If the Longhorns need the money for a buyout, they will find it.

Locked on Longhorns Podcast: ‘Jordan Whittington, Herb Hand and Baylor’

The latest Locked on Longhorns Podcast discusses yet another injury to wide receiver Jordan Whittington. Plus a look at Baylor.

[jwplayer okO0xtqi]

The Locked on Longhorns podcast kicks off the show discussing yet another injury to their wide receiver corp. Jordan Whittington is on the injury report once again after an abdominal injury surfaced following the Red River Showdown with Oklahoma last Saturday. With Whittington now down for the foreseeable future, what does the slot receiver position look like? Jake Smith reagravated his hamstring injury during warmups, so what could his status be for the  Baylor game?

On the topic of Baylor, we discussed the optics looking bad after the Bears hosted a homecoming event at their stadium. With the team under quarantine and football activities halted due to 42 positive COVID-19 cases, it doesn’t look good. If Baylor is able to field a team for Saturday, what are the roster requirements to play the game as scheduled?

The Longhorns have had their issues with the offensive line this year. Locked on Auburn’s Zac Blackerby joins the show to discuss the ‘familiar failures’ with the offensive line coach Herb Hand. Zac answers the question on if this is what the Tigers fanbase experienced during the two seasons in which Hand was in charge of the offensive line. Plus did Alabama use negative recruiting tactics to steal the Brockermeyer twins away from the Longhorns?

Plus we dive into five key stats in regards to the Longhorns through four games. What is the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to this football team? Check out Monday’s Locked on Longhorns podcast for all of those answers.
