Former Alabama five-star OT Tommy Brockermeyer transferring to TCU

Former Alabama offensive tackle Tommy Brockermeyer is headed closer to home to play for TCU.

Former Alabama offensive lineman Tommy Brockermeyer announced that he was transferring to TCU on Tuesday. He will be the second Tide transfer to join the Horned Frogs this off-season by way of the transfer portal. The other transfer is former Tide wideout, JoJo Earle. He announced his decision late last week.

Brockermeyer chose Alabama coming out of high school even though his father and older brother both played for Texas. Interestingly enough, Tommy has a twin brother, James, who also signed in the same class. Now, it appears the two have split up as Tommy will be playing for TCU while James remains at Alabama.

Tommy was a five-star prospect coming out of high school and was perceived by many to have an immediate impact along the Tide’s offensive front. However, that did not happen. Instead, the Texas native suffered some injuries that set him back and caused him to miss a lot of time. During his two-year career at Alabama, he played in just two games.

The Horned Frogs have made it clear that their program is doing everything it possibly can to stay on top and rightfully so. With Texas and Oklahoma leaving for the SEC soon, it looks like Sonny Dykes’ program could be the ‘cream of the crop’ in the Big 12.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Brockermeyer’s college career as well as other Alabama football news.

Former 5-star Alabama OT Tommy Brockermeyer predicted to transfer to TCU

Tommy Brockermeyer was a reserve offensive lineman in two seasons at Alabama. He is projected to land at TCU.

Former five-star and Alabama offensive tackle Tommy Brockermeyer recently announced that he was entering the transfer portal. On Thursday, TCU Insider Jeremy Clark placed a crystal ball prediction for him to land at TCU.

This comes as somewhat of a surprise considering he and his brother (James) are Texas legacies. His father, Blake, played offensive tackle for the Longhorns. His older brother, Luke, played linebacker for the Longhorns.

However, Fort Worth is where the Brockermeyers are from. Tommy played sparingly in two seasons at Alabama while being plagued with injuries.

If he lands at TCU, he will likely be able to see significant playing time. The Horned Frogs have established themselves as a program on the rise after reaching the College Football Playoff this season. This would likely be beneficial for both parties. Brockermeyer gets a fresh start and the Horned Frogs gain a highly-touted offensive lineman.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama football and the transfer portal.

Alabama OT Tommy Brockermeyer to enter NCAA Transfer Portal

Alabama offensive tackle Tommy Brockermeyer enters transfer portal after two seasons with the program. He was a five-star coming out of high school.

With the transfer portal window opening up on Monday, Alabama offensive tackle Tommy Brockermeyer became the latest addition to the transfer portal. Four other offensive linemen (Tanner Bowles, Damieon George, Javion Cohen, and Amari Kight) also announced their intentions of entering the transfer portal.

Brockermeyer signed with the Tide as a part of the 2021 recruiting class. He chose the Tide over his father’s alma mater: Texas. His brother, Blake, also played as a linebacker for the Longhorns.

Brockermeyer played sparingly in his two seasons in Tuscaloosa. He saw action in just two games at Alabama.

His twin, James, also signed with the Tide as a part of the 2021 recruiting class. He has not announced that he will be entering the transfer portal at this time.

A destination to keep a close eye on is Texas as head coach Steve Sarkisian was another key reason why the twins chose the Tide over the Longhorns coming out of high school.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama football news as it pertains to the transfer portal.

10 of Texas’ biggest recruiting misses over the last several cycles

A few of the most painful misses on the recruiting trail, all from within the state of Texas.

While Texas has found success on the recruiting trail as of late, there were some painful misses on in-state players over the last several cycles. Continue reading “10 of Texas’ biggest recruiting misses over the last several cycles”

5 offensive players Alabama fans need to watch during A-Day

5 offensive players Alabama fans need to watch during A-Day

Alabama’s annual A-Day game is set to kick off on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. CT inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.

There is plenty of talent both young and old to be excited about if you are a ‘Bama fan, and it will also be our first opportunity of the spring to see this year’s version of the Tide.

In his Thursday press conference leading up to A-Day, head coach Nick Saban said the format for the scrimmage would be the first-team offense against the first-team defense and the second-team offense against the second-team defense. With this format, fans will get to experience a more game-like scenario with good on good.

Leading up to the start of A-Day tomorrow, I wanted to sit down and give fans a handful of players from each side of the ball that I believe could make an impact during the scrimmage. I want fans to keep in mind that these are players that fans have not seen make a tremendous impact yet for the Crimson Tide, but could on Saturday and during the 2022 season.

Today we will look at the offensive side of the ball. Let’s roll.

5 second-year offensive players to watch this spring

5 second-year offensive players to watch this spring

Alabama will return to the gridiron on March 19 to begin spring practice in preparation for the annual “A-Day”  game which will be held on Saturday, April 16.

We have already looked at several second-year defenders as we await the return of the Crimson Tide. Now let’s take a look at second-year offensive players that Tide fans should be excited about this spring.

Alabama is loaded with young talent on the offensive side of the ball so this list was not easy to compile. So, without wasting too much time, let’s get rolling!

Who will replace the Alabama stars going to the NFL in 2022?

Who will step up to fill some important roles in 2022?

Alabama’s 2021 team made it all the way to the national championship, but fell short to the Georgia Bulldogs. The talent the Crimson Tide had on that squad was a mix of young stars and draft-eligible players, many of whom have decided to declare for the 2022 NFL draft.

Big-time difference makers won’t be back next season like wide receivers John Metchie III and Jameson Williams are gone, as well as the offense line leader Evan Neal.

Nick Saban and his coaching staff are tasked with finding their replacements this offseason.

CBS Sports’ Chip Patterson put together a list of replacements for college football’s biggest stars that are moving onto the NFL.

For Evan Neal, Patterson predicts J.C. Latham or Tommy Brockermeyer will step in to fill the left tackle position.

“The top two prospects from Alabama’s 2021 signing class were both five-star tackles, and the efforts to get those commitments were likely done with the expectation that Neal would be on his way to the NFL after his third year with the Crimson Tide,” writes Patterson. “Latham, the No. 1 tackle and No. 3 overall prospect in the 2021 recruiting class, played on special teams and got in work at guard in the Cotton Bowl due to injury. Though Brockermeyer, the No. 2 tackle and No. 6 overall prospect in the 2021 class, did not see any game action in 2021, he’s likely going to play a factor in this replacement wave up front on offense because Nick Saban is tasked with replacing both starting tackles in 2022.”

Next … filling in the WR void

Alabama Football: 5 position groups to watch this spring

Alabama Football: 5 position groups to watch this spring

Although Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide were not able to claim a national championship this past season, the 2021 team still accomplished quite a bit.

The Tide won the SEC Championship and finished with an impressive 13-2 record and Bryce Young became the first Alabama quarterback to win the Heisman Trophy.

Now that the season has come to an end, let’s shift our focus to spring practice and which position groups Alabama fans should be watching when the Tide returns to practice in a couple of months.

Alabama recruiting: Crimson Tide signs ridiculously good 2021 offensive class

The Alabama Crimson Tide has landed one of the all-time best offensive hauls with its 2021 recruiting class.

Alabama has the No. 1 recruiting class in the country for 2021. That isn’t considered major news at this point, but we need to be talking more about this offensive haul of talent for the Crimson Tide.

On Friday, Alabama landed another big-time signee in massive four-star offensive guard Jaeden Roberts. That gave Nick Saban and company 26 total signees or commitments, and 12 of those came on offense.

Guys, just look at the collection of talent below. The Tide could field an entire unit with top-notch high school talent, which is insane. This is one of the most impressive groups I have ever seen, and it will be a lot of fun to watch and see how it develops over the next couple of years.

It should be noted that Wheaton is only a commitment and won’t sign until February. The other 11 players, however, are all locked in and ready to come in and contribute in 2021. Check this out!

Texas Recruiting: Top in-state talent trending outside of Austin

In recent years the Texas Longhorns have been losing out on top talent. Is it a trend or just confirmation bias?

On Thursday night the Texas Longhorns watched as another one of the top recruits in the state decided to play elsewhere. The top prospect of the 2022 class, Quinn Ewers committed to play for the Ohio State Buckeyes. Which isn’t new territory for Ryan Day and company. They have made a living in the Lone Star State.

Five Star Texas Recruits since 2017

  • Ohio State-5
  • Texas-4
  • Texas A&M-4
  • Alabama-2

The Buckeyes continue to raid top talent from the state as the Longhorns and Aggies alike just watch. The Longhorns have been in a free fall when it comes to talent in the state. As Joel Klatt stated, “Texas has lost its luster.” Which couldn’t be any more of a fact. Early in the Tom Herman era, The Longhorns were putting together top 10 classes every year. As they have failed to deliver on the field, it has shown this year with the 2021 recruiting class. They have missed out on legacy players, a top talent they had committed for months, and now the top player in their 2022 cycle.

2021 Top players in Texas

The Longhorns have one commit in the top 20 players in the state of Texas. The No. 1 player is committed to Alabama (Tommy Brockermeyer). The No. 2 player is committed to Ohio State (Donovan Jackson). The No. 3 player is Ja’Tavion Sanders who is committed to Texas. They are still in the running for L.J. Johnson who ranks in at No. 7 but seems like he is leaning towards the Aggies.

Top 20 Texas Recruits 2017 2018 2019 2020 2021
Texas 1 12 3 5 1
A&M 1 4 7 3 4
OU 2 1 3 2 6
Alabama 1 1 1 2 2
LSU 3 0 1 1 3
Ohio State 3 0 1 1 1
  • Texas- 22 (4.4/year)
  • A&M- 19 (3.8/year)
  • OU- 14 (2.8/year)
  • Alabama- 7 (1.4/year)
  • LSU- 8 (2/year)
  • Ohio State- 6 (1.2/year)

When you first look at the numbers and see the Texas Longhorns leading with 4.4 it doesn’t look so bad. That number is vastly skewed by the 2018 recruiting year that landed them 12 of the top 20. Outside of that one cycle, the Longhorns average just 2.5 of the top 20 in the state. The biggest two rivals to the Longhorns have out recruited the Longhorns with their top talent in the state.

The Longhorns 2017 class was started by Charlie Strong and Herman had to finish it. He was hired on Nov. 26 of 2016, just two weeks before the early signing period was set to take place. The 2018 season was more or less his. He arrived in plenty of time to get that class together. After seeing three recruiting cycles after 2018, it seems that year was an aberration.

Since 2018, the Longhorns are currently third in terms of landing Texas talent. Given they are getting beat at home in recruiting, and getting beat on the field it doesn’t leave a lot of hope for the Horns.
