Notre Dame makes offer to 2026 guard, daughter of former NBA player

Hope she picks the Irish.

Kate Harpring hasn’t even begun her junior year at Marist in Atlanta. That’s the same high school her father, former NBA player Matt Harpring, attended. But that hasn’t stopped many prominent programs from making her offers already. She confirmed that Notre Dame is one of those programs on social media:

On the same day, Harpring also announced an offer from Iowa, which only added onto the list of schools that already have offers to her. Among the other schools hoping to add her as part of their 2026 recruiting class are Florida State, Clemson, Louisville, Maryland, Kentucky, Arizona, Utah and Vanderbilt. Needless to say, the Irish will have plenty of competition here.

We don’t know how the Irish would look as far as competitiveness by the time she arrives on campus. However, if many prominent schools already have made her offers, she obviously is something special. Hopefully, she chooses to prove that in South Bend.

Micah Shrewsberry speaks after Notre Dame wins home finale vs. Clemson

Hear from the coach.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] was in a great mood after Notre Dame beat Clemson, 69-62. How could he not after a  second straight win over a team headed to the NCAA Tournament? The team is playing a lot better than it was earlier in the year, which is impressive for a team that wasn’t expected to accomplish much.

Fighting Irish Wire was on hand to hear a relaxed Shrewsberry give his take on the game as well as the things that have happened this season. Given that there are no more games at Purcell Pavilion this season, the time felt appropriate to ask questions about the season itself. He seems to be settled in a lot more with where he is with his team and his place within the university.

Listed below are Shrewsberry’s opening statement and his answers to the questions he was asked by Fighting Irish Wire:

Notre Dame beats Marist to end three-game losing streak

Back in the win column.

[autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] wasn’t happy after Notre Dame laid an egg against The Citadel. We may never know what he said during the following practice, but it paid off at least for the next game. The Irish got themselves back on track with a 60-56 win over Marist, snapping their three-game skid.

After a first half that was ugly and boring to watch at times, the second half was far more entertaining. The Irish (5-7) held a couple of double-digit leads during that frame, going up by as much as 11 with over five minutes to play.

The Red Foxes (7-3) wouldn’t go quietly though as they cut that lead to two with over a minute and a half left. With the Irish not making any field goals in the final four minutes, it took two free throws apiece from [autotag]Tae Davis[/autotag] and [autotag]Braeden Shrewsberry[/autotag] in the final minute as well as solid overall defense to ice this one.

[autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] led all scorers with 21 points on 8-of-18 shooting from the field and also had four steals and three assists. Davis scored 12 points and combined with Shrewsberry to make 10 free throws in as many attempts. [autotag]Carey Booth[/autotag] had 11 points and a team-high six rebounds.

J.R. Konieczny, Matt Zona speak after Notre Dame loss to The Citadel

Read the players’ perspectives on the loss.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – [autotag]Matt Zona[/autotag] is one of the few Notre Dame players who had Elijah Morgan as one of his teammates. He probably didn’t count on seeing Morgan go off when The Citadel came to Purcell Pavilion. Sure enough, that’s what happened as Morgan scored a game-high 19 points in a 65-45 Bulldogs win over the Irish.

Zona grabbed four rebounds but was held out of the scoring column. Most of the Irish’s production came from [autotag]J.R. Konieczny[/autotag], who had 18 points and 10 rebounds. It looked for a while like Konieczny was going to carry his team to victory. Instead, the Bulldogs took over in the second half after allowing six unanswered points to start.

Zona and Konieczny were the two players selected to speak to the media after the loss under the watchful eye of [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] (more on him later). Konieczny looked emotional as he took his seat, and Zona looked like he was just trying to wrap his head around what had just happened. Here’s what they had to say:

Notre Dame releases nonconference schedule for 2023-24

Make your plans accordingly.

Notre Dame is in a transitional period for sure. There’s a new coach in [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag]. Almost the entire roster is different, and the few returning players barely have seen the floor in their careers.

Needless to say, this does not stand to be a winning season in South Bend. However, games still need to be played because how else are you going to gain experience?

To that end, the Irish have released their nonconference schedule for the 2023-24 season. They should earn a few wins simply because some of their opponents don’t come from power conferences. Such is typical in the early days of the college basketball season. The only way the Irish could lose out is if they have absolutely no talent, and these players are with an ACC program for a reason.

Here are the nonconference games for the season, not including the Legends Classic on Nov. 16 and 17 in Brooklyn that will feature the Irish, Auburn, Oklahoma State and St. Bonaventure. The first-round matchups for that will be determined at a later date. For everything else though, mark your calendar:

Catching up with the Boston Celtics’ 2023 NBA draft workouts Part IV

Let’s dive into who the Celtics might be targeting at No. 35.

Even with the offseason here in earnest, the Boston Celtics have plenty on their plate regarding their future as they continue to work out prospects projected to go in the second round of the ’23 NBA draft.

With the Celtics likely to need cheap depth in the future, look for prospects who are either polished enough to get some real minutes in their rookie campaign or who might be okay with a season or two stashed abroad while the team makes decisions about how it will use the new two way player slot added to rosters in the latest collective bargaining agreement recently adopted by the league.

Adding to our previous reporting of the team’s known workouts comes a new wave of prospects Boston has been working out — let’s dive into who the Celtics might be targeting at No. 35.

Derrick Phelps named assistant basketball coach for Marist College

Former Tar Heel guard Derrick Phelps has been named the assistant men’s basketball coach for Marist College.

Former Tar Heel [autotag]Derrick Phelps[/autotag] has been named the assistant men’s basketball coach for Marist College.

The announcement came Tuesday afternoon from the schools’ social media accounts. The 1994 UNC graduate has been an assistant coach for Washington State for three years and for one year at Monmouth.

Last season the Marist Red Foxes finished 13-20 overall and 6-14 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Phelps played a significant role for the Tar Heels from 1990 to 1994. He started 103 out of 132 games, helping UNC win its third national championship in 1993. In Phelps’s final year, he was named to the 1994-All ACC tourney team and averaged 9.2 points. 5.3 assists and 1.8 steals on the season.

The experience Phelps brings will be a big boost for the Red Wolves.

Notre Dame offers stud 2023 receiver Tate

Fighting Irish offensive coordinator Tommy Rees goes a little west over to Illinois and offers 2023 wide receiver Carnell Tate.

It may have seemed like the onus was going to be solely on the 2022 class today, see as increased contact was allow by the NCAA starting today. (Check out some of the prospects from ‘22 that got some love from Brian Kelly and his recruiting staff).

That didn’t stop them from going to Chicago, Illinois and offering one of the most talented wide receivers in the country in Carnell Tate.

It was a conversation with new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees that spurred the offer, which for the 6-foot-2-inch and 170-pound was his fourth to date. This is a big one as Tate shows a very high ceiling for such a young player. He showed a bit of everything during his freshman campaign, which is why Tate is getting attention from Power Five school’s already. Tate runs crisp routes, has great hands, and shows big play ability after the catch. Check out his highlights here.

Tate is the first offer that the Irish have made on offense for the 2023 class, showing how they feel about his skill level and what he could turn out to be. With Brian Kelly and Rees already getting the attention of Tate at this early juncture in his recruitment will hopefully yield dividends down the road.

Watch: Highlight Tape of Newest Notre Dame Commit

Coogan is a three-star talent and you can learn a bit more about him from our write-up earlier tonight in case you missed it  Otherwise we have a couple of things to offer you in regards to Coogan.

First up – his junior year highlight tape.  The young man looks every bit of 6-5, 225 and isn’t looking to just tap opponents out of his way.

Pat Coogan, an offensive lineman from Marist High School on Chicago’s south side committed to Notre Dame on Wednesday evening.  Coogan chose the Fighting Irish just a couple weeks after getting an offer, something Ohio State and LSU followed suit with.

And since his commitment it’s nice to see Coogan already following the footsteps of Blake Fisher and doing some recruiting for Notre Dame’s 2021 class on his own.
