Notre Dame to visit three top-10 2025 Indiana recruits

Hope at least one of them ends up with the Irish.

When Micah Shrewsberry took over as Notre Dame coach, he vowed to heavily recruit within Indiana. After all, that’s where he’s from and where Notre Dame is located. He’s done well with that so far with five players from the Hoosier State on this past season’s team, including ACC Rookie of the Year [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag].

Shrewsberry isn’t satisfied with his current number of Indiana players though. That’s why this week, he’s hosting visits with three recruits from the state, all of which rank in the top 10 of its 2025 class according to 247Sports. One tweet after another from multiple accounts confirms this:

For those keeping score at home, that’s one forward and two guards the Irish are looking to land. As you can see from these tweets though, they already are have some stiff competition in other programs. Virginia Tech seems particularly in on Mullins. Good luck to Shreswsberry and his staff with these meetings.

Photos of Notre Dame transfer guard Matt Allocco from Princeton days

A look back at the new Irish guard’s days with his previous team.

Notre Dame has landed its first transfer of the offseason, and it’s a big one. After three years with Princeton that included a Sweet 16 berth in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, guard [autotag]Matt Allocco[/autotag] is heading to to South Bend. He already blows any transfer [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] got in his first season with the Irish out of the water. Granted, that isn’t a high bar to clear, but still.

Had Allocco played for the 2023-24 Irish, he would have been their top shooter from both the field (.508) and the free-throw line (.909). He also would have been second behind [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] in both scoring (12.7) and assists (3.3). The Irish definitely would have won a few more games with him.

Make no mistake. The Irish still have a long road to travel to where they want to go. But having a veteran like Allocco will help the younger players in ways we all will see soon enough. For now, those players can refer to their new teammate’s days with the Tigers like so:

Watch: 2024 edition of ‘One Shining Moment’

In case you missed it.

With UConn’s 75-60 win over Purdue in the championship game of the NCAA Tournament, the 2023-24 college basketball season is complete. Once the clock hit zero, the confetti dropped, the trophy was presented, and the net was cut down. But there still was one more piece of business to take care, and that’s the montage that has closed every tournament since 1987 set to the now-classic “One Shining Moment”:

You’ll notice the severe lack of Notre Dame in this montage because the Irish weren’t anywhere close to being a tournament team this season. [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] took over the program, and he had to scramble just to assemble a roster for the season from the moment he was hired.

Fortunately, all signs point to the Irish heading in the right direction. It might take at least another season before the Irish find themselves back in this montage, but they have the right guy at the helm, and he will rebuild the program into something South Bend can be proud of.

Notre Dame’s Carey Booth enters transfer portal but could return

Hopefully, he comes back.

When a player enters the transfer portal, they generally don’t go back to where they came from. Not so fast in the case of Notre Dame forward [autotag]Carey Booth[/autotag]. In an Instagram story and in speaking to On3’s Joe Tipton, Booth announced his that he’s entering the transfer portal. However, he has not ruled out coming back to the Irish as indicated in the following statement:

“I’m beyond thankful for getting to wear the blue and gold this year. I’m especially thankful to Coach Shrewsberry and his staff for believing in me and bringing me to South Bend. With that being said, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal to keep all of my options open – including a return to Notre Dame.”

IT’S BRACKET MADNESS: Enter USA TODAY’s NCAA tournament bracket contest for a chance at $1 million prize.

Booth, the highest-rated player in Notre Dame’s 2023 recruiting class on 247Sports, played all 33 games for the Irish this past season, starting 19 of them. In his first collegiate season, he averaged 6.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 0.6 blocks a game.

At 6-foot-10, Booth was tied with [autotag]Kebba Njie[/autotag] for the tallest player on the team, and it’s possible he felt he couldn’t compete with Njie for a starting spot going forward. Whatever the case, hopefully, he isn’t gone for good.

Micah Shrewsberry, Markus Burton, Tae Davis talk after Notre Dame loss

It wasn’t going to happen, but a few folks said [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] should have gotten consideration for ACC Coach of the Year. While he did get a few votes, that award is reserved for coaches who get results that really jump off the page. Finishing tied for 12th in a 15-team conference won’t do that, but that still was seen as better that what Notre Dame was expected to do in his first season at the helm.

Shrewsberry spoke after the Irish bowed out in the second round of the ACC Tournament with a 72-59 loss to Wake Forest. Joining him was [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag], the ACC Rookie of the Year who wrapped up an impressive season by leading all scorers with 21 points and dishing out a team-high three assists. Also talking to the media was [autotag]Tae Davis[/autotag], who finished his season with a 16-point performance.

Here’s what the Irish had to say as they talked after a game for the final time this season:

Photos of Notre Dame’s ACC Tournament second-round loss to Wake Forest

See how the season ended.

There’s no question Notre Dame has a bright future, and that’s evidenced by how well it played late in the season. As of right now though, the Irish are too inexperienced and lacking in talent to pose a serious threat to the ACC. Wake Forest made sure of that by beating them, 72-59, in the second round of the conference tournament.

Not only did this team exceed expectations with a 13-20 record, but it also won more games than last year’s veteran-laden Irish that was one season removed from an NCAA Tournament appearance. That [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] was able to take over the program this season and squeeze this much out of this particular roster is impressive, and he deserves all the time and resources required to make the Irish a winner again.

With [autotag]Matt Zona[/autotag] the only rotational player to be gone next year barring someone transferring, the Irish’s final game of the season provided one last preview of the future. Here are some photos that captured that:

Micah Shrewsberry speaks after Notre Dame wins home finale vs. Clemson

Hear from the coach.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] was in a great mood after Notre Dame beat Clemson, 69-62. How could he not after a  second straight win over a team headed to the NCAA Tournament? The team is playing a lot better than it was earlier in the year, which is impressive for a team that wasn’t expected to accomplish much.

Fighting Irish Wire was on hand to hear a relaxed Shrewsberry give his take on the game as well as the things that have happened this season. Given that there are no more games at Purcell Pavilion this season, the time felt appropriate to ask questions about the season itself. He seems to be settled in a lot more with where he is with his team and his place within the university.

Listed below are Shrewsberry’s opening statement and his answers to the questions he was asked by Fighting Irish Wire:

Tae Davis, Matt Zona speak after Notre Dame beats Clemson

Hear from a couple of key players after the Irish’s latest victory.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Notre Dame gave its home fans a great sendoff for this season with a 69-62 victory over Clemson. There were several key players involved with the result, but only two of them spoke to the media afterwards.

One was [autotag]Tae Davis[/autotag], who scored all 18 of his points in the second half and scored six straight points to break a 50-all tie and give the Irish a lead they never gave back. He stands to be a key part of the future.

The other was senior forward [autotag]Matt Zona[/autotag], who played his final game at Purcell Pavilion and was named team captain by [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] beforehand. Coming off the bench, he hit two 3-pointers to account for all six of his points and also grabbed four rebounds. Getting to talk to the media was a nice culmination of a memorable day for him.

Here are the questions Fighting Irish Wire asked them:

Notre Dame defeats Louisville for third straight victory

That’s called a winning streak.

Notre Dame hadn’t won three straight games since opening last season with five consecutive victories. Even though it had the ACC’s worst offense entering Wednesday, it was visiting Louisville, the team with not the only the conference’s worst defense but its worst record. The Irish took advantage of that and earned that coveted third straight win, 72-50.

Despite the weaker competition, it took a while for the Irish (10-16, 5-10) to put the Cardinals (8-19, 3-13) away. In the first half, their 13-point lead was cut to four, but a [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] layup in the last minute before halftime put them back up six. Burton finished with 16 points.

It was an eight-point game with eight minutes to go in the second half when [autotag]Braeden Shrewsberry[/autotag] decided enough was enough and hit back-to-back 3-pointers to squash any comeback hopes for the Cardinals. It was the highlight of 23-point night in which he knocked down seven 3s, tying a program freshman record.

Even with a 14-point lead, the Irish added some extra insurance and finished the game on a 13-5 run even with [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] emptying the bench. Of course, the Cardinals helped by making only one of their final 12 shots. It was a fitting finish to a night in which they shot only 33.9% from the field.

ACC Tournament will feature top 15 teams beginning in 2025

The Irish men will have to get better fast.

The ACC will include California, Stanford and SMU beginning with the 2024-25 season. That will bring the total number of conference members to 18. With that clearly being too high of a number for its conference basketball tournaments, the conference decided a change was needed.

Starting in 2025, only the teams that finish in the top 15 in the conference standings will be invited to the ACC Tournament. This follows a cue from a recent decision by the Big Ten, which also will be expanding next season to the point where it also only will invite the top 15 teams in the conference standings to its tournament.

While Notre Dame’s 16th-ranked women’s team is not expected to slide to the bottom of the ACC anytime soon, the men already are there in a rebuilding season. If the new rules went into effect for this season, the Irish wouldn’t be invited to the tournament.

Hopefully, with a year of experience under their belt, the young men’s Irish team will improve enough that they still will play in the 2025 ACC Tournament. There’s a long road ahead though, and there’s no guarantee of things being any better next year. Best of luck to [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] and his team in reaching this new goal.
