Boston Celtics rookie Drew Peterson produced his first triple-double on Monday in the G League to lead the Maine Celtics to a win over the Delaware Blue Coats.

Peterson recorded 18 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, one steal and one blocked shot in the 122-101 win on the road. He went 7-of-14 from the field, including 2-of-5 from 3-point range, in 38 minutes as Maine improved to 16-11 in the regular season.

The undrafted forward from USC became the 29th player to register a triple-double in the G League this season with the performance. He also notched his fourth double-double.

Peterson, who is signed to a two-way contract, began the year in the G League with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the affiliate of the Miami Heat. He then signed with the Celtics in December and has spent most the year with Maine.

The 24-year-old is averaging 15.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.8 assists and one steal on 48.5% shooting from the field in 44 games between the Skyforce and Celtics. He produced a career-high 30 points and eight rebounds on Jan. 21 with Maine.

Peterson was a standout player last season with the Trojans and has had a strong run this year. The Celtics believe he has a bright future and want to keep him around to tap into his potential.

Celtics Lab 238: A deep dive into the deep rotation’s Stay Ready Crew with Noa Dalzell

Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason?

The Boston Celtics have by most accounts the best top six players in the entire NBA to match their league-best regular season record. So, it can be easy to forget about the rest of the team. The so-called “Stay Ready Crew” mostly does just that — keep themselves in the right frame of mind and state of health in case their number is called.

And those numbers do get called, with players like Oshae Brissett and Lamar Stevens bringing energy and matchup-dependent options that have sparked wins for Boston, while the sharpshooting duo of Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser wreak havoc on opposing defenses. And if it were not for the likes of Luke Kornet and Neemias Queta defying expectations as reserve big men, you can be sure there would be less wins to the Celtics’ name this season.

Which players matter most to the team’s title aspirations? Which might be on the move ahead of the 2024 NBA trade deadline? What talent does Boston have in the pipeline in Maine? And who will see the floor in the postseason?

To answer all of these key questions not quite getting the attention they deserve, the hosts of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast linked up with Celtics Blog’s Noa Dalzell.

Drew Peterson’s mom gave him a huge assist after joining the Celtics

The Boston Celtics latest two-way player had a helping hand from his mom after he made the jump from the G-League.

The Boston Celtics recently signed Drew Peterson to a two-way contract after waiving Nathan Knight. Peterson had been impressing in the G-League with Sioux Falls. However, his opportunity with the Celtics didn’t come without its challenges, most notably how to get his clothes from Dakota to Boston while also being present with his new team.

That’s where Peterson’s mom, Stacey, came to the rescue. Upon finding out Drew had been given an opportunity in Boston, she flew from her home near Chicago all the way to Dakota, where she loaded a van full of her son’s belongings and began the eight-hour drive to Boston, as reported by Adam Himmeslbach of The Boston Globe.

“There was obviously no time to get back to Sioux Falls to retrieve his other belongings, so his mother Stacey helped take care of that,” Himmelsbach reported. “She flew from her family’s home near Chicago to Sioux Falls, loaded a rental car with as many of her son’s things as she could fit, and then made the nearly eight-hour drive back to Chicago.”

Peterson has already begun to make his presence felt with his new team.

During the Celtics’ blowout win over the LA Clippers on December 23, Peterson checked into the game for the final 2:33 of the contest, where he knocked down his only shot and impressed with his passing to create an assist for Lamar Stevens.

Under Brad Stevens, the Celtics have begun finding impactful talent via their G-League system, and there appears to be a direct route to NBA playing time. Sam Hauser and Luke Kornet both graduated from the Maine Celtics to the primary roster, and Neemias Queta appears to be next in line. As such, Peterson will likely believe he can also follow a similar trajectory.

Who is new Boston Celtics two way forward Drew Peterson?

What you need to know about the Rice and USC alum.

The Boston Celtics have made a relatively minor but intriguing move by signing 6-foot-8 forward Drew Peterson to a two way contract on Wednesday, filling the void left by the release of former Celtics two way big man Nathan Knight.

This decision comes after ex-Boston two way wing Jay Scrubb, who initially occupied the spot at the start of the Celtics’ 2023-24 campaign, suffered an ACL injury during the Celtics’ training camp. Peterson, a rookie out of USC and Rice at the NCAA level and most recently the Sioux Falls Skyforce in the G League, brings a unique profile to the team. There, he showed off versatility and strong all-around skills, particularly excelling as a shooter and rebounder who can pass the ball a bit.

CLNS Media reporter Bobby Manning reacted to the signing after Boston waived two-way center Nathan Knight on Tuesday.

Drew Peterson signs deal with Boston Celtics

Congratulations to Drew Peterson!

The USC Trojans have quite a bit of talent on NBA rosters across the league. Now, one recent player has signed a deal.

Drew Peterson has inked a deal with the Boston Celtics, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. He has been playing with Sioux Falls in the G League and was originally signed to an undrafted free-agent deal with the Miami Heat.

The deal has been finalized. Peterson is expected to be with the Celtics on Thursday when they face Cleveland Cavaliers.

Oddly enough, the game comes against the Cavs, who have fellow USC alums Evan and Isaiah Mobley, both of whom have been playing well and have been an important part of the Cavalier roster.

Peterson was a big part of the Trojans over the past few years. He has performed well in the G League, averaging 15.2 PPG with 5.5 rebounds and over four assists.

Peterson’s value to USC is being magnified this season, with the Trojans struggling despite having top-ranked recruit Isaiah Collier on their roster. USC is missing Peterson’s reliable halfcourt defense and ball movement in what has been a painfully disappointing start to the 2023-2024 campaign.

Drew Peterson 2023-24 G League highlights: Welcome to the Boston Celtics

Able to put the ball on the floor and pass the rock in addition to shooting 40% from beyond the arc with the Skyforce this season, Peterson can defend well enough on the other end.

The Boston Celtics have signed former USC and Rice forward Drew Peterson (no, not that one), a 24-year-old 6-foot-9 native of Illinois who was most recently playing for the Sioux Falls Skyforce at the G League level this season.

Able to put the ball on the floor and pass the rock in addition to shooting 40% from beyond the arc with the Skyforce this season, Peterson can defend well enough on the other end, averaging a steal per game with Sioux Falls. Signing a two way deal with Boston will make the Libertyville High alum available for Boston 50 games this season when he is not playing with the Maine Celtics in Portland.

Woj: Boston Celtics ‘zeroing in’ on forward Drew Peterson

Per Woj, the USC alum’s representation has confirmed the interest of the Celtics in bringing on Peterson for the team’s open two way player slot.

The Boston Celtics “are zeroing in on free agent (forward) Drew Peterson for a two-way contract” per new reporting from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. Not THAT Drew Peterson, but the one who played at Rice and USC collegiately, and is currently with the G League’s Sioux Falls Sky Force.

A 6-foot-9 forward from Libertyville, Illinois, Peterson has been knocking down his 3-pointers 40.7% of the time with the Sky Force while putting up 15.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and a steal per game in 33.8 minutes of floor time per game. Per Woj, the USC alum’s representation has confirmed the interest of the Celtics in bringing on Peterson for the team’s open two way player slot, with the interest reciprocated by the Illinois native.

Check out this breakdown of his game in the video below to get to know his game better.

Drew Peterson is impressing the Miami Heat in NBA summer league

No guarantees, but Drew Peterson is improving his odds of sticking with the #Heat. They like what they’re seeing. #USC

Drew Peterson is having himself a summer. The USC standout was not picked in the NBA draft. The Miami Heat picked him up after the draft ended on an Exhibit 10 deal which gave Peterson the chance to earn a two-way contract.

Peterson’s performance in the NBA summer league is improving his odds of getting that two-way contract. The former Trojan is shooting 57 percent from 3-point range and providing smart, efficient play at both ends of the floor.

That two-way contract hasn’t been agreed to, but the chances of striking a deal are better than they were two weeks ago. Peterson could stick within the Heat organization and benefit from Miami’s elite player development methods.

We all know that the Heat have a sterling track record with taking undrafted players and turning them into meaningful pieces on NBA Finals rosters. Drew Peterson could be the latest example of the Heat’s ability to maximize resources and unearth hidden gems.

Why Drew Peterson could make the 15-man roster for the Miami Heat

If the Heat do complete a Damian Lillard trade, the ensuing roster shakeup might create a spot for Peterson. We’ll see.

The Miami Heat have certainly been in the headlines a lot recently, for both good and bad reasons. They made a crazy run to the NBA Finals this past season. They were able to win three straight rounds as the eighth-seeded team in the Eastern Conference.

Damian Lillard asked the Portland Trail Blazers for a trade, a move that — if completed — would end the seven-time All-Star’s tenure with that team. The Heat are the most likely trade destination for the elite point guard.

Last week USC forward Drew Peterson signed with the Miami Heat.

We wrote about the story:

“In the final UCLA-USC meeting of the past season, Jaquez had 15 points and eight rebounds on 5-10 shooting from the field. However, Peterson had 16 points on 6-10 shooting as the Trojans got the 13-point upset victory at the Galen Center.

“Now, the two Heat teammates will have plenty to discuss from their college days. Peterson has a lot of work to do to earn a roster spot, but an Exhibit 10 deal gives the Heat the chance to convert to a two-way contract, so there is a path to Peterson getting playing time in the G League, at least.”

Peterson scored 13.9 points per game for USC last season, shooting 44%. He also averaged 6.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists. Peterson spent three seasons with the Trojans after transferring from Rice. USC made the NCAA Tournament all three years with Peterson on the roster.

With that move and potential trades in Miami, Peterson has a solid chance to make the roster if he plays well this summer. The trade with Portland is still a work in progress, but it may include any combination of Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kyle Lowry, Tyler Herro, and Caleb Martin. It would include multiple first-round draft picks as well, opening a potential spot up for the former USC forward.

“I think the biggest thing for me is that I can do whatever a team needs,” Peterson said when describing what he could bring to an NBA organization. “I’m here to fill any role, whether it’s shooting, passing, rebounding, defending. I’m your guy and I’m ready to be plugged in wherever. Where the league is headed with positionless basketball, I think I’m perfectly suited for that.”

Drew Peterson, pursuing NBA dream, joins former USC rival in Miami

Drew Peterson and Jaime Jaquez went at it many times in recent #USC – UCLA battles. Now they’re both part of #HeatCulture.

The Miami Heat signed USC Trojan guard Drew Peterson to an Exhibit 10 deal after the 2023 NBA draft came to an end. Interestingly enough, Peterson will join former UCLA star Jaime Jaquez Jr., who was selected in the first round by the Heat at No. 18.

Of course, Jaquez and Peterson have gone against each other quite a bit as Los Angeles basketball rivals. Now they will team up, possibly in the Las Vegas NBA Summer League.

Jaquez was long discussed as a first-round selection after finishing his final UCLA season by averaging 17.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.

In the final UCLA-USC meeting of the past season, Jaquez had 15 points and eight rebounds on 5-10 shooting from the field. However, Peterson had 16 points on 6-10 shooting as the Trojans got the 13-point upset victory at the Galen Center.

Now, the two Heat teammates will have plenty to discuss from their college days. Peterson has a lot of work to do to earn a roster spot, but an Exhibit 10 deal gives the Heat the chance to convert to a two-way contract, so there is a path to Peterson getting playing time in the G League, at least.
