A former Nebraska men’s basketball player is preparing to make his professional debut. Guard Sam Griesel is joining Telekom Baskets Bonn of Basketball Bundesliga.

The guard spent one year at Nebraska after spending the previous four years at North Dakota State. In that one season, he averaged 12 PPG, 5.8 RPG, and 3.8 assists per game.

Griesel announced the move on social media.

This life is an incredible adventure. Today I leave for my first professional basketball opportunity in Germany. I’m overwhelmed with the amount of support and love I’ve received from Lincoln and this will always be home. So excited for this next chapter!

Griesel’s father is German and played for the U20 German National Team. Telekom Baskets Bonn are the defending BCL champions.

Griesel’s contract is three years in length, according to the club. He spent time with the Celtics during the NBA summer league.

Breaking down the Boston Celtics’ roster for Las Vegas Summer League

Few if any of these players will make the Celtics’ regular roster, but there is a chance for several to make one of the team’s three two way slots for the 2023-24 season.

While there might be a few more additions to the Boston Celtics roster for the NBA’s 2023 Las Vegas Summer League, for all intents and purposes we have a pretty good idea of who will be the Sin City Celtics this offseason.

The Summer Celtics includes Alexander Balcerowski, Kamar Baldwin, Justin Bean, Justin Champagnie, JD Davison, Eugene German, Sam Griesel, Reggie Kissoonlal, Mychael Mulder, Jay Scrubb, Vincent Valerio-Bodon, and Jordan Walsh. As is the case with the league’s annual summer exhibition series, few if any of these players will make the Celtics’ regular roster, but there is a chance for several to make one of the team’s three two way slots for the 2023-24 season.

Reggie Kissoonlal, Sam Griesel to join Celtics’ 2023 Las Vegas Summer League squad

The Celtics are close to having a full roster with these two additions, the total of players at a dozen at the time of writing.

Two more names can be added to the Boston Celtics’ roster for the NBA’s 2023 Las Vegas Summer League based on new reporting from Rookie Wire’s Cody Taylor and Husker Online’s Robin Washut.

Per Taylor, the Celtics are adding wing Reggie Kisoonlal to the Sin City Celtics. According to Washut, Boston plans to bring on former Nebraska guard Sam Griesel.

Kisoonlal spent last season with the Maine Celtics, and his versatility on the wing at 7 feet should give the summer Celtics an interesting look with the potential to earn a two-way deal.

Griesel, an undrafted 6-foot-6 shooting guard who rebounds well for his position and can facilitate could fight his way into one of Boston’s two-way slots with a strong performance. He will need to improve his perimeter shooting to stick at the NBA level.

While it is not clear how many players Boston will carry to the annual Nevada exhibition series, the Celtics are close to having a full roster. The two additions give them a dozen players for the summer league roster.

Catching up with the Boston Celtics’ 2023 NBA draft workouts Part IV

Let’s dive into who the Celtics might be targeting at No. 35.

Even with the offseason here in earnest, the Boston Celtics have plenty on their plate regarding their future as they continue to work out prospects projected to go in the second round of the ’23 NBA draft.

With the Celtics likely to need cheap depth in the future, look for prospects who are either polished enough to get some real minutes in their rookie campaign or who might be okay with a season or two stashed abroad while the team makes decisions about how it will use the new two way player slot added to rosters in the latest collective bargaining agreement recently adopted by the league.

Adding to our previous reporting of the team’s known workouts comes a new wave of prospects Boston has been working out — let’s dive into who the Celtics might be targeting at No. 35.

Offense disappears in disappointing overtime loss to Nebraska

The Badgers travelled to Omaha on Saturday, falling to the Cornhuskers 73-63 in overtime. The loss was truly another major disappointment.

The Badgers travelled to Omaha on Saturday, falling to the Cornhuskers 73-63 in overtime. With the season winding down, the loss was truly a major disappointment.

After taking a 35-24 lead into halftime, Wisconsin was able to expand the lead to 17 points with a Steven Crowl layup, going up 45-28 with 16:12 remaining in the contest. From there though, Nebraska took over.

Led by Keisei Tominaga, the Cornhuskers got hot down the stretch and forced OT. Tominaga was limited to just five points in the first half before finding his rhythm in the second half, producing 13 points while going 4-7 from the three-point line.

In addition to Tominaga, Sam Griesel was also able to reach double-digits in the second half, scoring 12 of his 15 overall points in the second period.

For the Badgers, only Chucky Hepburn had any success in the second half, adding 10 of 19 total points during the last 20 minutes of regulation. In total, Connor Essegian (13) and Max Klesmit (12) joined him with double-digit points in the game, but those two only compiled seven points combined in the second half and OT.

Speaking of overtime, only Tyler Wahl scored for Wisconsin in the extra period, making a mid-range jumper to give his team a 63-61 lead. After that, the Badgers would not score again as the Cornhuskers went on a 12-0 run to end the contest.

Greg Gard and his team are now in deep water when it comes to their chances to make March Madness and they’ll likely need a dominant run to end the season to crack the tournament.

With the loss, the Badgers fall to 14-10 overall on the season and 6-8 within the Big Ten. They’ll return home to play Michigan (14-11) on Tuesday for Valentine’s Day matchup where there will be no love lost.

Nebraska (12-14) will travel to face Rutgers (16-9) on Tuesday.

Husker Basketball Lauded for Off Season Move

Nebraska Basketball Coach Fred Hoiberg continues to receive high marks for his move in this year’s transfer portal.

When it was announced at the end of February that Men’s Basketball Coach Fred Hoiberg would be returning for his fourth year on the job, everyone knew that roster changes would have to be made. The most dramatic of those roster moves came when Sam Griesel, formerly of North Dakota State, announced that he would be playing for the Huskers this upcoming season. The senior guard averaged 14.3 PPG, 6.6 RPG, and 3.4 APG on 48.2% shooting in 25 starts for the Bison in the 2021-22 season.

The experts are noticing the move too, and 247Sports recently compiled a list of the top 10 teams in the 2022 transfer portal. The Huskers were slotted in at number six on that list, sharing the spot with Iowa State, Florida State, and Ohio State. The experts at 247Sports say, “This is exactly the transfer Fred Hoiberg needs at Nebraska. The opportunity will be there for Griesel to get major minutes right away, and he’s a high-floor player who has done a lot of winning throughout his career.”

This type of news doesn’t guarantee the Huskers anything this upcoming season, but it is nice to see that outside perspectives are noticing what Fred Hoiberg and company are doing and approving of it.
