A high schooler might’ve just pulled off the Jalen Carter spike play… but didn’t get the call

A St. Augustine High School player nearly intercepted a spike. Ruled incomplete instead, St. Bonaventure won on a trick play of its own on the very next play.

You likely saw the highlight on Nov. 21: With an impending spike by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, Philadelphia Eagles rookie lineman Jalen Carter dove between the legs of the center in an attempt to intercept the ball that beelined to the ground. Carter could not make a catch, but it opened the eyes of the football world — was spike defense changed forever?

A St. Augustine High School (San Diego, Calif.) lineman attempted the same thing this weekend, and per video replay, he may have done it successfully.

Steve Montoya, director of programming and strategy at MaxPreps, tweeted the video of Bronx “Boogie” Letuligasenoa diving and arguably catching the ball:

Did he catch it? Did it bounce? The referees ruled it an incomplete pass, and upon video replay, it’s hard to see definitively if the ball bounced or if Letuligasenoa caught it cleanly.

It would have mattered immensely. St. Augustine led St. Bonaventure (Ventura, Calif.) 20-7 entering the fourth quarter, but St. Bonaventure had cut the deficit to seven. St. Augustine had punted the ball deep in its own territory with 14 seconds left instead of running out more of the clock and taking a safety, and after a short punt, the Seraphs had a chance to complete the comeback and win the Division 1-A Regional Finals.

Immediately after the spike, St. Bonaventure completed a trick-play double pass for a touchdown and made the game-winning PAT with no time left on the clock.

St. Bonaventure won 21-20, and with how close Letuligasenoa’s diving interception attempt was to changing the game and postseason, it may continue to increase in popularity.

Carter said he got the idea from seeing a high school player do the same, and it has been done successfully at the high school level. ProFootball Talk on NBC Sports linked to two videos of such occurrences (here and here).

A little more clearly, and Letuligasenoa would have joined the list of successful spike preventions.

Instead, the Seraphs had their own trick play up their sleeve to get the win and advance to the championship, where they will play against Folsom (Calif.).

Notre Dame to play in 2024 Rady Children’s Invitational in San Diego

Make your travel plans for Thanksgiving weekend next year.

Notre Dame’s 2023-24 season won’t start for another two months, but we already know one event on its calendar for the 2024-25 season. The Irish will take part in the 2024 Rady Children’s Invitational in San Diego. Also participating are Purdue, BYU and latest entry Arkansas. The first edition of this invitational will take place this Thanksgiving weekend, so it’s safe to assume next year event also will happen at the same time.

Breaking the mold for the invitational in 2023 will be USC, Seton Hall, Iowa and Oklahoma. The Irish have their own multi-day event this season in the Legends Classic in Brooklyn. They’ll tip that tournament off against Auburn and then play either Oklahoma State or St. Bonaventure.

The difference between this year’s Legends Classic and next year’s Rady Children’s Invitational is that in the latter tournament, [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag] will have a team more in line with what he’s looking for. Until then, he’ll go through some first-year struggles with a young roster that was patched together quickly out of necessity. It shows how different things can be from one season to the next.

Notre Dame will face Auburn in first round of Legends Classic

Make your travel plans to New York.

When we wrote about Notre Dame releasing its 2023-24 nonconference schedule, we briefly mentioned the Legends Classic. We knew that the Irish would take part in this annual event, which they won in 2016, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. However, we didn’t know when the matchups for the event would be announced. It turns out we had to wait all of 24 hours.

The Irish have drawn Auburn as their first-round opponent in the Legends Classic. The other game will feature Oklahoma State and St. Bonaventure. However the first round plays out will determine who plays who in either the third-place game or the championship game.

The Tigers are a first-time opponent for the Irish and so would the Cowboys if they have the opportunity to play them. The Irish have won five of eight meetings with the Bonnies but lost to them last year in the Gotham Classic, which was held not far away in Long Island.

The Irish surely will be underdogs in at least the first game. In fact, they’ll be underdogs in almost every game this season. Hopefully, they take that as an opportunity to prove everyone wrong. It’s all they can do.

Notre Dame releases nonconference schedule for 2023-24

Make your plans accordingly.

Notre Dame is in a transitional period for sure. There’s a new coach in [autotag]Micah Shrewsberry[/autotag]. Almost the entire roster is different, and the few returning players barely have seen the floor in their careers.

Needless to say, this does not stand to be a winning season in South Bend. However, games still need to be played because how else are you going to gain experience?

To that end, the Irish have released their nonconference schedule for the 2023-24 season. They should earn a few wins simply because some of their opponents don’t come from power conferences. Such is typical in the early days of the college basketball season. The only way the Irish could lose out is if they have absolutely no talent, and these players are with an ACC program for a reason.

Here are the nonconference games for the season, not including the Legends Classic on Nov. 16 and 17 in Brooklyn that will feature the Irish, Auburn, Oklahoma State and St. Bonaventure. The first-round matchups for that will be determined at a later date. For everything else though, mark your calendar:

Notre Dame to participate in 2023 Legends Classic

Pack your bags for Brooklyn.

If you still are stinging over Notre Dame’s loss to St. Bonaventure this season, a shot at revenge could come next season. The Irish and Bonnies are two of four teams that have been selected to take part in the 2023 Legends Classic at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Those two programs will be familiar with each other, but the Irish never have faced Auburn or Oklahoma State, the other participants in this tournament.

The Irish are no strangers to the Legends Classic. Their only previous appearance came when they won the whole thing in 2016 with [autotag]Matt Farrell[/autotag] earning tournament MVP honors. They originally were scheduled to take part in the COVID-revamped 2020 event, which became a showcase instead of a tournament, but they pulled out and were replaced by BYU.

With so many familiar names figuring to be gone a year from now, the Irish in the 2023 tournament will have a vastly different look from now. Whether that’s a good thing remains to be seen.

Five takeaways from Notre Dame’s blowout win over Michigan State

The Irish needed this one and got it.

Notre Dame was in search of its first quality win of the season. It needed one after a disappointing loss to St. Bonaventure that it never really was in. As it turned out, playing a shorthanded No. 20 Michigan State team in the final ACC-Big Ten Challenge was just what the doctor ordered as the Irish won, 70-52, to clinch the challenge for the ACC. In fact, they never trailed aside from the Spartans scoring the game’s first basket.

The Irish (6-1) jumped out to a big lead in the first half and never looked back. Although there wasn’t as much offense in the second half, there was just enough for the Irish to maintain their dominance over the Spartans (5-3), who were missing Jaden Akins and Malik Hall.

Here are five takeaways from this big victory:

Notre Dame announces nonconference schedule for 2022-23 season

Notre Dame is eager to build on the success it had during the 2021-22 season.

Notre Dame is eager to build on the success it had during the 2021-22 season. It won two NCAA Tournament games, and [autotag]Blake Wesley[/autotag] became the program’s first one-and-done player after being drafted by the San Antonio Spurs. For the 2022-23 season, the Irish are returning most of their players and have another freshman with high expectations in [autotag]JJ Starling[/autotag]. We now know how their season will start in that they have released their nonconference schedule.

After everything the Irish accomplished last year, opponents will know not to take them lightly. [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] has recaptured his old magic, and that means a team that should continue to get better. All of this means some quality basketball will be played, and that means a product worth the money paid by the fans who come out to see them. After a Nov. 2 exhibition against New Orleans-based NAIA opponent Xavier, here’s who the Irish will face before playing an ACC schedule that promises even more excitement:

Notre Dame’s first three nonconference dates revealed

Mark your calendars for November.

Notre Dame’s 2022-23 schedule is starting to take shape. The dates and opponents for the Irish’s first three games, all of which are part of the Gotham Classic, have been announced. The season begins Nov. 16 at Purcell Pavilion against Southern Indiana, which is making its Division I debut as part of the Ohio Valley. That will be followed with a home game Nov. 22 against Bowling Green, an opponent the Irish have not faced since a 92-65 Valentine’s Day victory in 1972.

The third game, which is being promoted as the showcase game in the Gotham Classic, is Nov. 25, when the Irish will take on St. Bonaventure at UBS Arena, where the New York Islanders play. This matchup has been known since March, but we finally know when it will take place. This will be the Irish’s first game against the Bonnies since a 57-54 win three days before Christmas in 1994.

Here’s to a strong start to what should be another great season.

Notre Dame to play St. Bonaventure in 2022 Gotham Classic

Did you expect this opponent?

Notre Dame knows at least one of its nonconference opponents for the 2022-23 season, and it’s not one that was on anyone’s radar. That opponent is St. Bonaventure, which the Irish will play in the 2022 Gotham Classic at UBS Arena, the new home of the New York Islanders. It will be the Bonnies’ second straight season playing a prominent ACC program at a neutral site. This season, they lost to Virginia Tech in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The Irish are 5-2 all-time against the Bonnies, but the teams have not faced each other since a few days before Christmas in 1994, which the Irish won, 57-54. That marked the third straight season in which the teams met, and it snapped a two-game losing streak for the Irish in the series. Before that, the Irish had won all four previous meetings.

The Bonnies have a 20-8 overall record this season and have a double bye in the upcoming Atlantic 10 Tournament.
