How Twitter reacted to Notre Dame-Marshall: Irish side

You can’t be feeling good right now, can you?

There’s no other way to say it besides that stunk. Notre Dame lost to Marshall, 26-21, at home in one of the biggest letdowns in recent memory. What began as a day of high expectations ended in bitter disappointment. The result is no more hope for the College Football Playoff and questions of whether this program even belongs in the Top 25.

Maybe even worse for Irish fans is that they’ll be subject to mockery and abuse from every other corner of the college football landscape, especially those who profess a diehard hatred of the program. That’s a pretty empty feeling. Not only are they left to question everything they thought they knew about the program, but the Irish have such a prominent brand that ridicule during times like this comes without mercy. Irrelevance sounds like a much better option right now.

Here are some Irish fans who lamented this tragedy on Twitter:

Bengals place rookies Khalid Kareem and Markus Bailey on NFI list

The Cincinnati Bengals placed two rookies on the NFI list.

The Cincinnati Bengals placed a pair of rookies on the non-football injury list Monday.

Fifth-round defensive end Khalid Kareem and seventh-round linebacker Markus Bailey were the two names moved to the list.

Such a move is a mere formality oftentimes for players who suffered an injury in college. Both Kareem and Bailey still count toward the 80-man roster (which the Bengals still need to cut down to, if they so choose). Both can be activated at any time.

This formality hasn’t stopped either rookie from getting their deals with the Bengals done. As soon as they’re ready to practice, they’ll get activated.

The news comes on the heels of the Bengals being one of the first teams to send a player to the COVID-19 reserve list. They’ve also started pursuing that 80-man limit by cutting one player.

As of now, the only remaining questions about the Bengals rookie class is the contract status of both Joe Burrow and Tee Higgins.

Bengals’ Khalid Kareem models game after Chandler Jones, Everson Griffen

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Khalid Kareem has some big inspirations.

Khalid Kareem is one of the more interesting rookies for the Cincinnati Bengals going into 2020.

While he’s only a fifth-round pick, the former Notre Dame star drummed up an impressive resume in college and has the looks of an instant producer in a rotational role.

It sure helps that he looks up to a superstar NFL player like Chandler Jones and others.

“He just plays the game the right way, always hustling to the ball,” Kareem said, per Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com. “Same thing with Everson Griffen. “They never lay down on the field. They’re always around the ball. They’re always in the picture.”

Jones has been a dominant force since entering the league in 2012, registering 96 sacks along the way. And Everson Griffen — one of the top free agents left for the Bengals — has 74.5 since 2010.

Kareem has some serious work to do in order to break through teammates like Carlos Dunlap, Sam Hubbard and Carl Lawson on the edge for serious playing time. But his attitude, approach and skill set make it easy to see why the Bengals like him so much.

Kareem was the latest rookie to finalize his contract with the Bengals.

Khalid Kareem officially joins Bengals’ dangerous defensive line

The Cincinnati Bengals got Khalid Kareem under contract.

The slow trickle of news that is the Cincinnati Bengals signing the 2020 rookie class continued Thursday.

Cincinnati announced fifth-round pick Khalid Kareem is officially a member of the team after putting his name on the dotted line.

An A-graded pick back on draft day, Kareem joins Logan Wilson, Akeem Davis-Gaither, Markus Bailey and Hakeem Adeniji as rookies who have now signed with the team ahead of training camp.

Kareem had 13 sacks and 108 total tackles over thee years at Notre Dame and now joins a dominant-looking front seven for the Bengals, working into a rotation with guys like Geno Atkins, Carlos Dunlap and D.J. Reader.

Now that Kareem is aboard, only Joe Burrow and Tee Higgins remain as members of the rookie class yet to sign with the Bengals.

Former Notre Dame star Khalid Kareem signs his rookie deal

Khalid Kareem fell in the draft because of a shoulder injury but was able to sign his rookie deal on Thursday. How much did he get?

Khalid Kareem was a big reason for Notre Dame’s strong ability to get after opposing quarterbacks the last two seasons and looks to help the Cincinnati Bengals improve their defense this season.

The fifth round pick of the Bengals from the 2020 NFL Draft agreed to terms with the team Thursday and is set for training camp to open.  The four year deal is estimated to be worth roughly $2.6 million.

Kareem suffered a shoulder injury last season that kept him out of Senior Bowl activities and didn’t allow him to workout at the combine which is seemingly the main reason he fell to the fifth round.

Kareem recorded 88 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss and ten sacks over the last two seasons at Notre Dame while forcing four fumbles and returning a fumble recovery for a touchdown last season.

Bengals rookies Burrow, Kareem, Wilson take charge and lead by example

Cincinnati Bengals rookies have led the charge during trying times.

One of the biggest talking points surrounding the 2020 Cincinnati Bengals draft class — led by No. 1 pick Joe Burrow — was the emphasis on high character.

One run down the list of players selected shows the front office targeted guys from winning programs with a history of serving as team captains and generally coming as highly regarded.

Call it an understandable emphasis for Zac Taylor’s roster overhaul for a team whose most recent biggest flirtation with contention ended with players getting into shoving matches midfield and losing a playoff game.

But these rookies have shown so much more already — the leadership and chaaracter is by no means confined to the football field.

First, Burrow used his platform to speak out:

Fifth-round rookie Khalid Kareem wasn’t far behind with a heartfelt statement:

Third-round linebacker Logan Wilson also stood tall:

Other Bengals rookies shared similar sentiments on social media through shares or otherwise.

But it’s Burrow, Kareem and Wilson who stuck out the most on first pass. And this only focuses on rookies — don’t overlook Auden Tate leading a cleanup charge in Tampa and speaking out.

The rookies standing front and center on something like this before ever arriving to Paul Brown Stadium is something special, though. Younger generations continue to be more accepting and willing to enact change on a bigger scale — that an incoming Bengals class is already showing this in emphatic fashion is nothing but a good sign for the locker room.

The Bengals wanted great leaders and people in the 2020 draft — they got them.

Bengals rookie Khalid Kareem issues heartfelt statement on current events

Cincinnati Bengals rookie Khalid Kareem went public with a heartfelt statement.

Cincinnati Bengals players have been active in a positive manner over the last week or so when it comes to events outside the football world.

Quarterback Joe Burrow used his platform to address the George Floyd protests and wideout Auden Tate led cleanup efforts in Tampa Bay.

Fifth-round rookie Khalid Kareem has also issued a statement on social media, asking athletes, brands and otherwise to make sure actions reflect words — and that the actions are ongoing in an effort to spur greater change, not a momentary stance before things quiet again.

Kareem was a critical add for the Bengals in the character department as Zac Taylor sought to overhaul the culture in his locker room. He was a leader and captain at Notre Dame and came highly regarded, though actions there pale in comparison to a statement like this — and we’re excited to see what Kareem does next.

Here’s his full stastement:

Notre Dame Sets Record for Most All-Time Draft Picks…Sort Of?

Notre Dame’s six NFL draft picks over the weekend gave them the most of any school ever. Well, depending who you ask anyway. USC?

With Cole Kmet, Chase Claypool, Julian Okwara, Khalid Kareem, Troy Pride, Jr. and Alohi Gilman getting drafted over the weekend Notre Dame now has as many NFL Draft picks as any school in college football history.

Depending on who you listen to, anyway.

Notre Dame made that claim early Saturday evening on Twitter and also in their press release that recapped the annual draft.  The first two sentences from that release:

With six players selected in the 2020 NFL Draft, Notre Dame Football has totaled 511 draft picks over the tenure of the program. No other college football program has totaled more than the Irish.

A quick look to DraftHistory.com finds that Notre Dame does in fact have 511 draft picks all-time but that USC actually has 512.

Don’t count USC in that way of thinking however as USC is also proud of their 511 all-time selections that they claim on their official athletics website.  At the time of Michael Pittman’s selection in round two their release said the following:

Pittman is USC’s 511th all-time NFL draftee, the most of any school. He is the 16th Trojan wide receiver drafted since 2000, including the 10th in the top two rounds.

Both schools claim 511 while the website prided on all things NFL Draft claims a different number for USC.  I’d go and count myself but I’d rather not.  Way too many numbers for a Sunday afternoon if you ask me.

My favorite part of all of it though is that there is no mention of the other on either Notre Dame or USC’s websites or releases.  Instead it’s just “as many as any other school” or something of the sort.  We not be getting any live games anytime soon but I’m here for the *redacted, replaced with* spitting match between these two rivals.

Honest question, though: does USC get to claim Reggie Bush if they don’t acknowledge he ever stepped foot on their campus in any other capacity?
