Former Notre Dame top recruiting target flips his commitment

A lot of people claim to have seen this one coming…

At one time it seemed like it was just a matter of time before Chicago defensive tackle [autotag]Justin Scott[/autotag] announced his commitment to Notre Dame.

That commitment never came however as Scott announced this past summer that he would be playing his college football at Ohio State.

That remained true until Wednesday when Scott announced that he was changing his commitment.

Before you ask – no, the St. Ignatius product did not flip to Notre Dame.  He instead flipped from the Buckeyes to Miami in a move that sent the Hurricanes soaring up the national recruiting rankings for 2024.

Check out the announcement graphic below:

If the amount of cash shown here isn’t perfectly representative of college football today then I’m not sure what really is.

Miami finished the 2023 regular season at 7-5 overall in what was head coach Mario Cristobal’s second season in charge.

Breaking: Ohio State football loses 5-star recruit to Miami

Not great news. #GoBucks

This was not the news Ohio State football wanted to hear: [autotag]Justin Scott,[/autotag] a five-star defensive tackle commit, has flipped his commitment to Miami (Florida).

Scott had been committed to the Buckeyes since early July, but he follows his Chicagoland friend, Marquise Lightfoot, to South Florida. I had been told they were most likely a package deal and this turned out to be true, but clearly not in Columbus.

This is a hard one to swallow. Scott was ranked the No. 3 defensive lineman and 12th overall recruit in the country on the 247Sports composite. He was one of the cornerstones of the class.

Now it makes sense why the Buckeyes are hosting multiple defensive line recruits over the next few weeks. Losing Scott feeds the perception that Larry Johnson hasn’t been able to recruit at a high level the last few cycles.

Flip alert! Former Ohio State commit 5-star Justin Scott de-commits and verbals to Miami

Justin Scott is heading to Miami.

Miami football hasn’t had a great season…make that all that great of a millennium. But my goodness if Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes staff can’t recruit. On Tuesday, they flipped a five-star recruit in Justin Scott who had been committed to Ohio State.

The Ohio State who, as of a few weeks ago, had been the top team in the College Football Playoff rankings. Quite the job done here on the recruiting front.

Scott, a 6-foot-4, 315-pound interior defensive lineman at St. Ignatius (Chicago), is a five-star recruit according to Rivals (where he is ranked the seventh-best recruit in the nation) and 247Sports.

His flip to Miami is massive, especially at a time when the program seems to be struggling. Several key players from their two-deep have hit the transfer portal after a regular season where they went a disappointing 7-5. The Hurricanes lost three of their last four games to limp into bowl season.

Scott had been committed to Ohio State since July 2, just two weeks after he had taken an official visit with the Big Ten program.

Ohio State football recruiting update: Monster game, commitments wavering, and more

Jeremiah Smith goes off, two commits wearing non-Ohio State gear?!? #GoBucks

The high school football season is well underway, and it’s time to check in with what is happening with [autotag]Ohio State football[/autotag]’s commitments and targets.

The Buckeyes have the second-best recruiting class in the country, and the top group in the conference. They trail Georgia in the race for the mythical recruiting national championship. There are still a few spots open to add players.

In this update, we look at who performed well during this past weekend’s games, a pair of current commitments who were seen wearing other team’s gear and a look at a top target that might be trending elsewhere.

Mylan Graham bumped up to a five star in newest On3 rankings

Well, looky here! #GoBucks

On3 released an update to their top 300 players in the 2024 recruiting class rankings today. The new rankings featured many Ohio State football commits, including three ranked inside of the top 12.

Jeremiah Smith, a wide receiver out of Hollywood, FL, a Buckeye commit since December of last year came in as No. 2 overall in On3’s newest rankings. Justin Scott, a defensive lineman out of Illinois who just announced his commitment to the Buckeyes was the No. 5 ranked player in the class.

But, of note, Mylan Graham — who committed to the Buckeyes in April — added his fifth star for On3 and rose to the No. 12 ranked player in the 2024 class. Graham is an integral piece of yet another stellar wide receiver class brought in by Brian Hartline.

The star receiver who attends New Haven High School in Indiana hauled 48 passes for 1,149 yards and 13 touchdowns in his junior season.

Graham has the skillset to make an impact early in his career at Ohio State.  At 6-foot-1, and 170-pounds, he is electric with the ball in his hands, not just possessing great speed, but the ability to change speeds and direction on a dime.

It’s no secret that Ohio State has developed wide receivers better than any program in recent years and Graham has all the skills and talent to develop into a star.

Report: Notre Dame will continue to recruit 5-star committed prospect

The Irish staff isn’t giving up just yet

It was a shock when [autotag]Notre Dame[/autotag] priority target [autotag]Justin Scott[/autotag] pledged to Ohio State a week ago.

Not many expected that outcome because there wasn’t much noise between Scott and the Buckeyes. The five-star prospect never officially visited Notre Dame and the thought was he would make the trip when the Irish hosted Ohio State.

Even though Scott is committed, he hasn’t signed so nothing is final until the fax is sent over. According to Rivals Eric Hansen the Irish aren’t giving up. As Hansen fielded a variety of Scott related questions in a chat on Rivals, he said “Let me say off the top Notre Dame does not consider the recruitment to be over. … The Irish coaching staff is determined to flip him from his July 2 commitment to Ohio State.”

There you have it. Head coach Marcus Freeman isn’t on to the next one, he’s continuing his focus of Scott. It makes plenty of sense; the Irish put substantial resources into recruiting the 6-foot, 4-inch and 310-pounder.

Time will tell if it works out, but you have to credit the coaching staff for not giving up on its pursuit of Scott.

Notre Dame football: Today is the day for five-star Elijah Rushing

A five-star defender from a catholic high school is set to announce his decision. I feel like we’ve heard this story once already this week.

Today is the day for five-star defensive end [autotag]Elijah Rushing[/autotag] to make his college choice known.  The elite talent from Salpointe Catholic in Arizona traveled to take an official visit to Notre Dame in June and the Irish are a finalist for his commitment.

Notre Dame landing him however would likely feel like Ohio State fans felt when [autotag]Justin Scott[/autotag] announced his commitment this past weekend.  The Irish have a seat at the table but in complete transparency, nobody is looking at them as a realistic threat at this point.

Rushing has been linked to a few west coast programs with Arizona gaining significant steam of late.  Oregon has been a favorite here but according to those in the know it doesn’t look like the Ducks will finish this one off.

Rushing will announce his commitment at 5 p.m. ET on Thursday.  Along with Arizona, Notre Dame, and Oregon, Tennessee also has a seat on the table.

Here’s hoping for the best but expecting more of the same regarding Notre Dame recruiting today.

South Carolina feels ‘really good’ about getting 5-star edge Dylan Stewart

As for the next-best edge recruit in this cycle, two other programs appear to be the frontrunners.

Defensive linemen are all the rage right now in the 2024 recruiting race. The battle to land the No. 1 ranked edge prospect in the class – Duncanville’s Colin Simmons – appears to be a two-team race between Texas and LSU. As for the next-best edge recruit in this cycle, two other programs are the frontrunners.

After Simmons, Friendship Collegiate Academy (D.C.) five-star edge Dylan Stewart is No. 2 at his position, going by the 247Sports composite rankings.

Stewart has offers from 35 programs so far. Right now, On3’s prediction model has Ohio State as the favorite to get his commitment at 51.6%. However, South Carolina (31.2%) feels really good about their chances to get him, per Adam Friedman at Rivals.

“Ohio State has reason to be confident but they aren’t running away in this race. The Gamecocks “feel really good” about their chances with Stewart, according to a source. South Carolina is the main opposition for the Buckeyes in their pursuit of Stewart and they aren’t going to stop recruiting him even if he announces a commitment to Ohio State.”

In addition to being second at his position, Stewart (6-foot-5, 235 pounds) is ranked the No. 1 overall player in Washington, D.C. and No. 9 in the nation.

See it: Future Notre Dame quarterback pitches five-star defender

Does Notre Dame still have a chance here?

It’s one thing to be verbally committed to a school in college football these days.  It’s another to be an active recruiter for the rest of that school’s recruiting class.

Future Notre Dame quarterback [autotag]C.J. Carr[/autotag] is certainly more than just committed and has no problem at all trying to bring more talent along with him to South Bend.  We’ve seen it in the past when he’s posted photos with other members of the recruiting class, including five-star wide receiver [autotag]Cam Williams[/autotag].

He’s now doing it to try and keep one of Notre Dame’s biggest 2024 targets home.  That is of course five-star defensive tackle [autotag]Justin Scott[/autotag].

Notre Dame has seemingly put their foot on the gas in terms of recruiting the Chicagoland area in recent months.  The aforementioned Williams is already committed and is a five-star wide receiver while Scott seemed close to committing at one point.  However, as things stand today it would appear the Irish have their work cut out to land him.

For as close to home as Notre Dame is for Scott, he’s certainly had a difficult time making it to South Bend with any regularity.  As key as his addition to the 2024 class would be, his actions make it seem like the Irish aren’t his top choice.

Stay tuned as I’d love to be wrong about this one.

Recruitment for 5-star edge Colin Simmons appears to be a ‘two-team race’

Simmons appears to be narrowing his choices down to two schools.

Ohio State stunned the recruiting world on Sunday night when they got a commitment from St. Ignatius (Ill.) standout Justin Scott, one of several five-star defensive line recruits in the class of 2024. The best of them has yet to decide on his college, though.

That would be Duncanville (Texas) five-star edge Colin Simmons, who is ranked No. 1 at his position by Rivals and ESPN and in the top five at 247Sports and On3.

Simmons appears to be narrowing his choices down to two schools. Adam Gorney at Rivals says it’s a two-team race between Texas and LSU to get his commitment.

“There have been significant rumors especially in the last few weeks that Texas has emerged as the front-runner in this recruitment after months of Simmons liking LSU a whole lot. Throughout his recruitment, the five-star defensive end from Duncanville, Texas has been complimentary of many teams but as it gets closer this one feels like a two-team race with the Longhorns pulling ahead.”

Gorney is projecting that Simmons will eventually settle on Texas. That’s also what On3’s prediction model has, with the Longhorns the favorites at 58.5% and LSU at 21.1%.

Texas finished at No. 3 in the nation in the 2023 recruiting cycle, but right now, they’re lagging at No. 32 nationally in the class of 2024. Meanwhile, LSU is in the top 10.
