‘They had a more stable program;’ 4-star WR Jeremiah McClellan details flip from Ohio State to Oregon

Oregon Ducks 4-star WR signee Jeremiah McClellan detailed what led to his flip from Ohio State on signing day.

The biggest firework show that Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks provided on national signing day a couple of weeks ago came when 4-star wide receiver Jeremiah McClellan — the No. 49 player in the 2024 class — flipped his commitment from the Ohio State Buckeyes, ultimately signing as one of the top-ranked players in Oregon’s class.

There are several reasons why McClellan ultimately chose to flip, but in the end he said that the relationships he built with Lanning and the Oregon staff were the biggest factors. On top of that, he told 247Sports (subscription required) that the Ducks’ quarterback situation and the stability of the program weighed into the decision as well.

“I feel like they had a more sturdy program than Ohio State right now,” McClellan said. “They have two very good quarterbacks, so I’ll be set for quarterbacks the next four or five years I’d say, so that was a big thing for Oregon.”

While Bo Nix is leaving for the NFL after Monday’s Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, Oregon brought in both Oklahoma QB Dillon Gabriel and UCLA QB Dante Moore via the transfer portal this offseason, two of the top-ranked passers on the open market. With that duo in the QB room, as well as Austin Novosad and Luke Moga, it’s clear that the future in Eugene is bright and stable.

Top five wide receivers signed to the Big Ten on early signing day

Who were the top five receivers to sign with Big Ten teams during the early signing period? #GoBucks

The initial hype of the early signing period has died down, but there was a ton of talent to explore and so much so we are breaking it down by position. We have already dived into the top five quarterbacks and running backs to sign with Big Ten teams and now we want to break down a position Ohio State always dominates in with wide receivers.

It is no secret that the Buckeyes once again locked in the best in the class at the position and the players we are going to talk about today all have an opportunity to play early and often. It should be no surprise that some of the East Coast newcomers snagged some of the top talent at this position as well.

The Big Ten snagged five of the top 20 wide receivers in this class and with the expansion taking place, this will likely be the case year in and year out. Now it is time to dive in and provide the top five wide receivers in the class to sign with Big Ten teams according to 247Sports.

Ducks widely considered one of biggest winners on early signing day

Christmas came early as Oregon was a big winner when it came to recruiting signing day.

Dan Lanning and the Duck cleaned up on National Signing Day with some saying this is the best class in program history after it landed inside the top-5 nationally for the first time ever.

Of course, only time will determine if that plays out, but according to the ratings, Oregon was No. 1 in the Big Ten, jumping in front of new rival Ohio State after Lanning was able to flip wide receiver Jeremiah McClellan from the Buckeyes, which turned a lot of heads.

Later in the day, Oregon also flipped 4-star WR Ryan Pellum from the USC Trojans, picking up another win over a conference foe.

The Ducks aren’t here to play. Several outlets nationally took notice, with several naming Oregon as one of the big winners on signing day. Here’s what ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren had to say:

The Ducks already had a top-five class coming into the early signing period, but coach Dan Lanning was able to add some outstanding players on Wednesday. Lanning flipped ESPN 300 receiver Ryan Pellum, the No. 90 overall prospect, from USC. It’s big to flip a commitment on signing day, but doing it at the expense of a conference opponent that has already had recruiting questions makes it an even bigger deal. On top of Pellum, Oregon was able to flip ESPN 300 receiver Jeremiah McClellan from Ohio State. McClellan is the No. 100 recruit overall and gives the Ducks four ESPN 300 receivers in the class. That pairs perfectly with what Lanning & Co. have been able to do in the transfer portal. Set to lose quarterback Bo Nix, a Heisman finalist, to the NFL, Oregon got Dillon Gabriel (from Oklahoma) and Dante Moore (from UCLA) out of the transfer portal. Both were among the top 10 quarterbacks available in the portal.

ESPN wasn’t the only outlet to take notice. 247Sports also had Oregon as one of the big winners of the day:

As we see in college football, if you have the quarterback, it’s easy to figure the other stuff out. Coveted wide receiver Jeremiah McClellan probably factored that into the equation when he flipped to Oregon from Ohio State on Wednesday. Perhaps so too did 4-star receiver Ryan Pellum, who flipped from USC. Speaking of flips, Dan Lanning convinced transfer offensive tackle Matthew Bedford to sign with Oregon over Colorado, where he was previously committed. It was one of a few Oregon vs. Colorado battles in 2024: Lanning also held onto top-100 offensive tackle JacQawn McRoy, who Coach Prime made a huge late push for.

We love that in the Big Ten, Oregon’s bringing in a recruiting class with two five-star defensive linemen, Aydin Breeland and Elijah Rushing. The Ducks are also in the final four for 4-star defensive lineman Jericho Johnson, who makes a decision Thursday.

It came as very little surprise in Eugene that the Ducks had a banner day on the recruiting trail because that’s something that Dan Lanning has shown time and again that he’s good at. What comes next will be more important, though, as the coaching staff looks to take this talent and develop it into a championship-worthy roster.

WATCH: 4-star WR Jeremiah McClellan details decision to flip from Ohio State to Oregon

Jeremiah McClellan goes through his “stressful” decision to flip from the Ohio State Buckeyes to the Oregon Ducks.

While we didn’t receive a cigar video from Dan Lanning like last year, I think most Oregon Ducks fans went to bed on Wednesday thinking “Today was a good day.”

A big reason for that was the pair of WRs Oregon was able to flip from other schools: Jeremiah McClellan and Ryan Pellum.

McClellan, who had been committed to Ohio State since August, was the first to flip, becoming the highest-rated offensive recruit in the Ducks 2024 class. Often, flipped commitments like these are solidified days or weeks before signing day, but McClellan made his choice at the last moment. In an interview clip shown below, McClellan details when he made his decision, and how the decision was made.

In the video, McClellan highlights how stressful the decision was for him, which is why he was unsure where he’d end up until the eleventh hour, but overall he seems excited about his decision. The biggest draw for Oregon that McClellan mentioned is his relationship with Dan Lanning, as well as WR coach Junior Adams.

Lanning also talked about the process of getting McClellan back in the fold for the Ducks, continuing to recruit him all along even after he announced his commitment to Ohio State.

“I remember the day that he committed somewhere else and just be able to talk to him saying, ‘Hey coach, I’d love to keep the communication going.’ And it never really stopped on our end, all the way into late last night and early this morning,” Lanning said. “So I always felt like there was an opportunity if he felt like this was a fit, that there would be an opportunity for him to be here. And our staff did a phenomenal job of continuing to work all the relationships necessary for him to see the same picture and vision that we saw.”

While there was uncertainty at the wide receiver position at the beginning of the offseason, the Ducks are set to have a full WR room in 2024. The top guys will likely be, Tez Johnson, Gary Bryant, Traeshon Holden, and Jurrion Dickey (Oregon’s top recruit in 2023), but there are always depth chart surprises come fall. McClellan has been described by some analysts as the most “ready-now” receiver in the class, so there’s a chance we see him make an early impact in Eugene.

SIGNED: 4-star wide receiver Jeremiah McClellan is officially a Duck

Jeremiah McClellan, a 4-star wide receiver in the class of 2024, has officially flipped his commitment from Ohio State to Oregon.

Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks have been racking up commitments all morning as players across the country sign their national letters of intent. But, four-star wide receiver Jeremiah McClellan just became the first recruit to flip his commitment from another school to sign with the Oregon Ducks.

McClellan has been committed to Ohio State since the summer of 2023, but  buzz had picked up recently that McClellan might flip his commitment.

The 247Sports composite lists McClellan as the No. 13 WR and the No. 49 player overall. He is the third highest-ranked Ducks’ recruit, behind five-stars Aydin Breland and Elijah Rushing. That makes him the top offensive prospect in the Ducks’ 2024 class.

With star receiver Troy Franklin headed to the NFL, Oregon needs replacements at the position. Tez Johnson will likely fill the WR1 role in 2024. Gary Bryant Jr., Traeshon Holden and Jurrion Dickey likely fill the next few spots on the depth chart. That doesn’t leave much room for McClellan in Year 1, but he’ll have plenty of time to develop and potentially become a top-three WR in Year 2.

Here are McClellan’s highlights:

Flip alert! Ohio State loses 4-star wide receiver to Oregon

Oregon flips a major Ohio State commit.

There were concerns for weeks that Ohio State might lose wide receiver Jeremiah Smith before the early signing period. But it was four-star wide receiver Jeremiah McClellan who ended up flipping.

On Wednesday during the first day of the early signing period, McClellan flipped from Ohio State and committed to Oregon.

A standout wide receiver at Christian Brothers (St. Louis, Missouri), McClellan is a truly versatile athlete. He played outside linebacker and wide receiver in high school.

He checks in at 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds.

The flip to Oregon is significant as it gives the soon-to-be Big Ten program an explosive athlete with a rare combination of strength and size to go along with impressive speed.

He is the fifth wide receiver in Oregon’s class but with a skillset and build that is so unique, he is certainly the most intriguing prospect.

McClellan is the No. 49 player in the nation according to 247Sports where he is the No. 13 wide receiver in the 2024 class. In early June, he took an official visit to Ohio State, and then committed to the program two months later.

He remained committed to the Big Ten program until Wednesday.

More bad news for the Buckeyes

While the Ohio State football wide receiver room has plenty of talent, the goal is to continue restocking the room.

It looked like the Buckeyes were going to accomplish that goal when Missouri’s [autotag]Jeremiah McClellan[/autotag] committed to the program in August. However, smoke started rising in recent weeks that the nation’s No. 13 wide receiver and No. 49 recruit overall on the 247Sports composite was looking at other programs, specifically Oregon.

As the saying goes, where there is smoke, there is fire. McClellan flipped his commitment to the Ducks on the first day of the early signing period as bad news continues to roll in for the Buckeyes.

The 2024 recruiting class cupboard at wide receiver isn’t bare. Mylan Graham already sent in his paperwork. The Buckeyes are still waiting on the signature of the nation’s top recruit, Jeremiah Smith. If that occurs, there’s plenty to look forward to.

Oregon fans react to Ducks’ late flip of 4-star WR Jeremiah McClellan from Ohio State

The Oregon Ducks officially flipped 4-star WR Jeremiah McClellan from the Ohio State Buckeyes on Monday, leaving fans to celebrate.

Dan Lanning has made one thing very clear since taking over as the head coach for the Oregon Ducks: He is nothing if not a showman.

That was the case once again on Wednesday as the early signing period began. The Ducks flipped former Ohio State commit Jeremiah McClellan, a four-star wide receiver.

McClellan is the No. 49 player overall and the No. 13 WR on the 247Sports composite. He gives a big boost to the Ducks’ 2024 class, which is ranked inside the top 10 in the nation.

The Ducks have been recruiting McClellan for a long time, and the Christian Brothers’ star from Saint Louis, Missouri, took multiple visits to Eugene over the past couple of years. Ultimately, the efforts by Lanning and wide receivers coach Junior Adams were enough to persuade the blue-chip pass-catcher to flip to the Ducks.

As you would expect, Oregon fans went crazy with celebration at the news on Wednesday morning. Here are some of the top reactions on social media:

4-star WR Jeremiah McClellan flips from Ohio State to Oregon Ducks

The Oregon Ducks got a commitment from 4-star WR Jeremiah McClellan, who flipped from the Ohio State Buckeyes ahead of signing day.

We’ve seen during his time as the Oregon Ducks head coach that Dan Lanning is prone to launching fireworks around the early signing period.

This year was no different. Four-star wide receiver Jeremiah McLellan announced he had flipped his commitment from the Ohio State Buckeyes to the Ducks. McClellan is No. 49 overall and No. 13 among wide receivers on the 247Sports composite. He gives a big boost to the Ducks’ 2024 class, which is ranked inside the top 10.

It’s also likely the quarterback situations at both schools played a factor. With Dillon Gabriel transferring from Oklahoma to Oregon, the Ducks are set with one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy in 2024 under center. Ohio State is searching for its next QB after Kyle McCord entered the transfer portal this offseason.

It is unclear how much of a role McClellan will have early in his career because the Ducks have a lot of talent at the top of the depth chart. But he will certainly have an opportunity to show what he can do.

Ducks working hard to flip 4-star WR Jeremiah McClellan from Ohio State

The Oregon Ducks are working hard to flip 4-star WR Jeremiah McClellan from Ohio State on Early Signing Day.

One of the primary targets for the Oregon Ducks throughout this entire 2024 recruiting cycle has been 4-star wide receiver Jeremiah McClellan, the No. 49 overall player and No. 13 WR in the 2024 class.

Earlier this year, McClellan committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes, but that hasn’t stopped Dan Lanning and Co. from staying persistent and continuing to recruit him. Now it appears that they are working hard to get a late flip from McClellan on the early signing day, which would be a move that Duck fans are used to from Lanning.

I was told earlier in the week that Oregon felt good about where they stood with McClellan, and there was a good chance that the Ohio State commit ended up in Eugene.

While the buzz has shifted back and forth a bit over the last few days, 247Sports analyst Steve Wiltfong reported on Wednesday morning that the Ducks seem to be in a good position.

“The St. Louis product could indeed choose Oregon today,” Wiltfong said. “‘On the fence last night,’ a source told 247Sports this morning. With that being said the momentum seems to be going back towards the Ducks.”

It would be a massive get for the Ducks, who currently have two other receivers in the 2024 class. We will continue to monitor throughout the day, but it appears that Oregon fans could be in store for some classic Lanning fireworks on signing day.
