  • No. 6 North Shore (6A D1)
  • No. 13 Duncanville (6A D1)

USA TODAY Sports Super 25 Regional Football Watchlist: Southwest region

Keep an eye on these teams as the opening Super 25 ranking nears.

The 2023 high school football season has arrived, with teams kicking off across the country in August.

That means the first USA TODAY Sports Super 25 is nearing, which marks another start to an iconic franchise that began back in 1982.

Last year’s Super 25 was one of the tightest races of all time, as St. John Bosco narrowly won out over Mater Dei and Bishop Gorman, among others.

How will things stack up this season? Ahead of the opening Super 25, USA TODAY HSS is looking around the country at the five regions we use to create the national rankings:

Next up is Southwest, which comprises of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.

Recruitment for 5-star edge Colin Simmons appears to be a ‘two-team race’

Simmons appears to be narrowing his choices down to two schools.

Ohio State stunned the recruiting world on Sunday night when they got a commitment from St. Ignatius (Ill.) standout Justin Scott, one of several five-star defensive line recruits in the class of 2024. The best of them has yet to decide on his college, though.

That would be Duncanville (Texas) five-star edge Colin Simmons, who is ranked No. 1 at his position by Rivals and ESPN and in the top five at 247Sports and On3.

Simmons appears to be narrowing his choices down to two schools. Adam Gorney at Rivals says it’s a two-team race between Texas and LSU to get his commitment.

“There have been significant rumors especially in the last few weeks that Texas has emerged as the front-runner in this recruitment after months of Simmons liking LSU a whole lot. Throughout his recruitment, the five-star defensive end from Duncanville, Texas has been complimentary of many teams but as it gets closer this one feels like a two-team race with the Longhorns pulling ahead.”

Gorney is projecting that Simmons will eventually settle on Texas. That’s also what On3’s prediction model has, with the Longhorns the favorites at 58.5% and LSU at 21.1%.

Texas finished at No. 3 in the nation in the 2023 recruiting cycle, but right now, they’re lagging at No. 32 nationally in the class of 2024. Meanwhile, LSU is in the top 10.

The No. 1 ranked Edge defender in the recruiting class of 2024 is Colin Simmons from Duncanville (Texas).

On Tuesday, MaxPreps National Football Editor Zack Poff shared some highlights from Simmons’ remarkable body of work, including some absolutely ridiculous numbers from his Junior season.

Simmons (6-foot-3, 225 pounds) is ranked No. 5 overall in the class of 2024.

Thirty-nine different schools have made offers, according to On3, but their prediction model has LSU (88.4%) as the heavy favorite.

Making the case for 4 teams that were under consideration for National Champion

St. John Bosco was named the high school football National Champion, but three other teams could make a case that they deserve that No. 1 spot for the 2022 season.

High school football doesn’t have the luxury of college and the NFL in which the best teams go head-to-head in a defined championship game, so it falls on the media to fulfill the excruciating task of deciding which team is the best in the nation.

On occasion, it’s fairly straightforward. For example, when Mater Dei went 15-0 in 2017 with an offense led by JT Daniels and Amon-Ra St. Brown, all seven media outlets voted for the Monarchs; similarly, in 2021, when they went 12-0.

But most years, it’s a near-impossible task. Who can say with certainty that one elite team full of Division I talent would beat another elite team full of Division I talent? Who can even say with certainty that a rematch wouldn’t flip the script in a game between those teams?

This year, four teams had a case for the No. 1 spot in the country. USA TODAY High School Sports selected St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.), as did the other six outlets that voted, but history should not show that this decision was made lightly.

The top four spots were:

No. 1 St. John Bosco (13-1)

No. 2 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas) (14-1)

No. 3 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) (12-1)

No. 4 Central (Miami) (14-0)

Looking back at past 3 North Shore, Duncanville championship matchups

For the fourth time in five years, North Shore and Duncanville are set to play in the championship. Can Duncanville finally get on top?

In what has practically become a tradition, North Shore and Duncanville are set to face off for the UIL Texas Football State Championships.

It’s the fourth time in the last five years these two teams have played against each other, and Duncanville is hoping to turn around a lopsided record in these games — North Shore has won all three. One was a low-scoring affair, one was a two-possession game, and one came down to a Hail Mary. Regardless of how it happened, the Mustangs have had the upper hand in this rivalry.

This year, both teams enter the matchup undefeated. North Shore is ranked No. 8 in the Super 25 and Duncanville right below at No. 9.

In what has become among the best nearly-annual games in the nation, let’s look back at the last three championship matchups.

Kickoff for the 2022 championship is Saturday at 7 p.m. at AT&T Stadium.

The top 10 Super 25 teams square off in a huge title game in the Lone Star State.

It’s a top-tier high school football matchup this weekend in Texas, where two undefeated and evenly-matched rival Super-25 teams square off in the state championship.

Here is a preview of the Class 6A Division I title game between the Duncanville Panthers and the North Shore Mustangs.

No. 9 Duncanville (14-0)

(Chris Jones-USA TODAY Sports)

The Panthers began the 2022 season with a 23-10 win over South Oak Cliff (Texas). That’s about as close as any opponent got all year, with the exception of Westlake (Texas), who lost by a touchdown. Almost everyone else got blown out, with 10 opponents going down by 30 points or more. Their most recent victim was Prosper (Texas), who they defeated, 41-0.

No. 8 North Shore (15-0)

(PAUL BRICK/CONTRIBUTED)

Meanwhile, the Mustangs had two close shaves all season. In October, they only managed to beat Summer Creek (Texas) by a touchdown and Atascocita (Texas) by a field goal. All the other teams they faced lost by two possessions or more. To advance, North Shore beat Westlake 49-34.

Per the Houston Chronicle, this will be the fourth time in five years these teams meet in this game. North Shore won the last three (2018, 2019 and 2021), and all were decided in the fourth quarter.

The game will be played at the Dallas Cowboys’ home, AT&T Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for Saturday at 7:00 p.m. central.

Duncanville boys basketball team opts out of ’22 postseason play

A major development for the Panthers this basketball season.

One of the best boys high school basketball teams in the country won’t be participating in the playoffs this year.

Duncanville (Texas) was recently penalized by the district over an ineligible player on last year’s team, which resulted in every win he played in – including a third-consecutive state championship – to be stripped.

Now, the team won’t be allowed to play in the UIL postseason this year, either. The decision was announced by Duncanville ISD Superintendent Dr. Marc Smith in a statement, per CBS DFW.

“The decision comes after the UIL stripped the team of its 2022 Class 6A state championship and placed the team on three years’ probation after ruling the team used an ineligible player. The family of the player sought and received six court orders from four different courts to allow him to keep playing. Duncanville ISD was not a party to the legal action, nor did it challenge the UIL’s earlier decision or take any legal action against the UIL. This was a legal dispute between a player, his family, and the UIL. At all times, Duncanville ISD followed the court orders.”

Duncanville has also suspended head coach David Peavy for the season.

At issue was the eligibility of star point guard Anthony Black, who has since enrolled at Arkansas. After a series of court battles, he was ruled ineligible. The team will be on probation for three years for the recruiting violation.

The Panthers began their 2022-2023 season on Saturday with a 73-65 win over Brennan (Texas).

Duncanville boys basketball team stripped of state title, girls coach suspended

Duncanville (Texas) boys basketball team stripped of state 2022 title, girls coach suspended over alleged recruiting violation.

The best high school basketball team in the country last season has been stripped of its 2022 state title, according to a report by Greg Riddle at the Dallas Morning News.

After the UIL retroactively ruled him ineligible, Duncanville (Texas) has been forced to forfeit every game that senior guard Anthony Black played in.

Black averaged 13.5 points per game, 5.8 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game, helping lead Duncanville to its third straight state championship. However, the Texas Supreme Court vacated a court of appeals judgment that had allowed Black to play after transferring thanks to a restraining order filed by his mother against the UIL.

Head coach David Peavy – now married to Black’s mother – has been suspended. Black has since enrolled at Arkansas.

In related news, Duncanville’s girls basketball team is also getting a significant punishment. Riddle reports that head coach LaJeanna Howard has been suspended for one year over a recruiting violation.

The girls team has also been banned from the playoffs.

Texas HS Football: Duncanville pounds DeSoto on the ground in 41-17 win

Duncanville defeated DeSoto on Friday night to hand the school their second loss of the 2022 season.

There were a lot of interesting matchups to follow this past weekend in high school football. Texas was the scene of one of the best.

Duncanville defeated DeSoto 41-17 on Friday night, improving their record to 8-0 on the season. For DeSoto, it was only their second loss of the year and the first since facing second-ranked St. Frances Academy in Week 2.

The Panthers kickstarted the scoring with a 92-yard touchdown run from running back Caden Durham, who announced an offer from Michigan State earlier in the day. He continued to dominate the rest of the game, finishing with an absurd final line of 309 yards and five touchdowns on just 19 carries.

Some of the credit must also go to Duncanville’s defense, which held Junior quarterback Darius Bailey to a 50% completion rate, just 83 passing yards, no touchdowns and a rating of 56.3.

Next up, the Panthers play an away game at Mansfield Legacy (Texas).
