Mavericks assign Josh Green to Salt Lake City Stars in NBA G League

Green has appeared in 17 games for the Mavericks this season, averaging 2.5 points and 2.3 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game.

On Wednesday, the Dallas Mavericks announced that they have flex-assigned first-round pick Josh Green to the Salt Lake City Stars of the NBA G League. Green will join rookie teammate Tyler Bey with the Stars in the bubble.

Green, who was the 18th overall pick, has appeared in 17 games for the Mavericks this season, averaging 2.5 points and 2.3 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per game. He has not played with the Mavericks since logging five minutes on Feb. 4.

The Mavericks opted against fielding a team in the G League bubble but can still assign roster players using the flexible assignment and two-way transfer rules.

Green this season has logged five starts but has since fallen out of the rotation. Green averaged four points and 4.2 rebounds in 21.5 minutes in the starting lineup.

The opportunity to send Green to the Stars can be highly beneficial for his development and training this season in order to receive consistent playing time.

The Stars play next on Thursday vs. the Raptors 905 at 11:30 a.m. EST.

Josh Green earning respect from Mavericks’ veteran players

Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle believes Green has earned some respect from the veterans on the team during the preseason.

Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle on Monday praised rookie Josh Green for his performance with the team in practice during training camp and in the three preseason games.

Green admitted that he has no idea what to expect as a rookie this season but is just working hard to make the transition from college to the NBA. Of course, Green has yet to go through this process before and is just trying to learn as much as possible from his teammates and coaching staff.

“The last couple of weeks I’ve been really busy trying to get used to playing an NBA schedule and practicing every day,” Green said. “I’m a rookie so just going into it I have no idea what to expect or what to do. I’m just trying to learn every single day but I can’t wait to get on the court on this first road trip and bring whatever I can bring to the table to help the team out and get some wins.”

The 18th overall pick said that his teammates have been great in terms of helping him with the transition. They understand the shortened training camp period has created a tough situation this year and Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle even believes Green has earned some respect from them given his work ethic and demeanor at the team facility.

“He had a good preseason. He’s a great practice player,” Carlisle said. “He knows the game, goes hard, works extremely hard. He is a no-nonsense guy that just competes and doesn’t have a lot of unnecessary words in his day-to-day presence on an NBA team. I think he’s a guy that has earned some respect with our veterans. We like him, obviously, we wouldn’t have drafted him at 18. He has got a chance to play some for us, which is good for him and good for us.”

Green averaged 5.7 points, two assists and 1.3 rebounds in three preseason games with the Mavericks. He has played mostly off of the ball to this point and has shown flashes in that role. Carlisle praised him for his ability to cut on the floor and believes he is one of the best on the team in that area.

Though his preseason numbers don’t jump off the page, the 20-year-old appears to have gotten more comfortable each time on the floor and could find himself playing in a large role this season for Carlisle and the Mavericks.

Dallas tips off the regular season on Wednesday vs. the Phoenix Suns.

Rick Carlisle: Josh Green ‘progressing’ after second preseason game

Green produced 10 points and two rebounds during the Mavericks’ win over the Bucks on Monday.

Dallas Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle offered praise for Josh Green on Monday after the first-round pick turned in a solid second performance of the preseason during a 128-112 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

The 18th overall pick finished with 10 points, two rebounds and one assist in nearly 19 minutes of work off the bench. He found his shot in the game after struggling in his debut, converting on 4-of-7 from the field and 2-of-4 from 3-point range.

Green showed a good mix of playing on and off the ball on Monday. He found some success in driving into the paint while he also drilled a couple of corner 3-pointers. Carlisle noted one other aspect of his game that has maybe gone unnoticed by some.

“He is progressing and he is aggressive but his aggression is done in a way that he keeps a lot of risk out of the game,” Carlisle said after the game. “He understands where the spaces on the floor are. He is one of our best cutters. Cutting is not a thing you hear talked about a whole lot in the media, it’s not a very glorified aspect of the NBA game, but with the way the game is spaced now and the way the defenses sluff off on the weak side, you’ve gotta have guys that are very good at it. Green is great at it.”

With several ball-dominant players on the team, playing well off the ball is what may allow Green to stay on the floor. The team is also high on his 3-and-D ability and values his defensive skill set and that could be the role Green eventually fills this season.

Given the shortened training camp and preseason schedule this year, Green will need to continue to get comfortable on the floor but he showed on Monday that the game appears to be slowing down for him.

Dallas wraps up preseason play Thursday vs. the Minnesota Timberwolves.

International prospects have a heavy presence in the 2020 NBA Draft

Projected lottery picks Deni Avdija and Killian Hayes headline the group of international prospects in the NBA draft.

[jwplayer q5HGf5QJ]

Nearly 70 attendees of Basketball Without Borders, a global development program, have been drafted or signed as free agents in the NBA and that number only projects to grow with the next class set for the draft on Wednesday.

Projected lottery picks Deni Avdija (Israel) and Killian Hayes (France) headline the group of prospects that have previously participated in a BWB Global Camp as they competed against each other in Charlotte as part of NBA All-Star Weekend in 2019.

Hayes also took part in the 2018 BWB Global Camp in Los Angeles with four other prospects in this year’s class: Josh Green (Australia), Leandro Bolmaro (Argentina), Paul Eboua (Cameroon) and Vit Krejčí (Czech Republic). The event marked the most-ever likely draftees to participate in the same camp.

“It is definitely another exciting year for us when it comes to international players in the draft, particularly the players who have participated in our international basketball development programs as kids,” said Chris Ebersole, the NBA senior director of international basketball operations.

I think it’s definitely the latest wave in a rising tide of international players. It seems like each year now we have a pretty good crop of international players coming in and the majority of them usually have participated at some level, whether it’s the BWB program or other programs around the around we have done to engage with the youth.

The international game continues to grow, with more than 100 players from across the world on NBA rosters for six consecutive seasons. Teams are dedicating more resources to scouting the international game and the results have produced a combined 30 international players selected in the NBA draft over the past two years alone.

The BWB program was launched in 2001 and has helped put several high-profile names firmly on the NBA radar, such as Joel Embiid, Pascal Siakam and Jamal Murray among others. Just last year alone, a record eight former BWB campers were drafted, surpassing the previous record of six set in 2011.

The BWB Global Camp, which began in 2015, has become a must-watch event for teams. The camp brings 64 of the top boys and girls aged 16 to 18 from around the world to one centralized location during NBA All-Star Weekend with representatives from all 30 teams on-hand to witness the players participate in various drills and exercises.

“The focus of those camps is really developing young players on and off the court and giving them access to the great coaching and NBA players showing them the ropes,” Ebersole said. “The other benefit of these camps is we can bring together all of these top players onto one court and give NBA teams a chance to scout them next to each other, which is really valuable. With international basketball, it’s not always easy to make apples to apples comparisons given the varying levels of competition.

With the 2018 BWB Global Camp, there are five prospects in this year’s draft who we expect to be drafted who were all part of that camp so it was a chance for NBA teams to see Killian Hayes, Josh Green, Leandro Bolmaro in one setting. I think that is a tremendous value and we definitely want to continue to provide that benefit to all 30 of our teams.

The draft this year could also feature a record-high number of players selected of African origin.

Among the prospects from Africa this year, there are two players from Nigeria, Precious Achiuwa and Udoka Azubuike, projected to be drafted and an additional five draftees who were born in the U.S. but have a parent from Nigeria, including Isaac Okoro, Onyeka Okongwu, Zeke Nnaji, Daniel Oturu and Jordan Nwora.

Including Eboua, Mamadi Diakite, who is from Guinea, and Karim Mane and Lamine Diane, both from Senegal, are also in draft contention this year. The NBA record for the most African players selected would be topped should five hear their names called, and several of them could be of Nigerian origin.

“We’re not surprised by it,” Ebersole said. “We know how much talent is from Africa in general, and Nigeria, specifically, and it is one of the cool storylines of this draft. There are seven players from this class that have a chance to be drafted and it’s exciting to see. Hopefully, that cycle continues and we’re able to continue to do great work.”

The NBA draft is often a culmination of an incredibly long journey and hard work for a given prospect, but especially for a player from outside of the U.S. Dreams come true each year during the NBA draft and the night will serve as an incredible experience that will not be forgotten.

“The moment you see those players walk across the stage is really the most rewarding feeling about what we do,” Ebersole said. “Seeing these players grow into who they are, we usually get them when they are 16- or 17 years old, so to see them develop and achieve their dreams is always really special.”

Josh Green says he spoke with Sixers, goes to Ben Simmons for advice

Arizona product Josh Green said he spoke with the Philadelphia 76ers and he goes to Ben Simmons for advice.

The NBA draft is approaching quickly in two days and now is the time for the final preparation. Every team has their draft board, every team has their final list of players that they will look at and the draft interviews are close to being done with.

For the Philadelphia 76ers, they have a few needs that they have to address in this draft on Wednesday and there are plenty of options they can go. They can either make the pick at 21 or they can even trade the selection and go get a player who can win right now.

In terms of making the selection, the Sixers have a few options to go with there. One of them is Josh Green out of Arizona who offers a lot of versatility for the wing position and on Monday, he said he had an interview with Philadelphia.

“I did talk with the 76ers recently,” Green said via a Zoom call. “I’ve been close with Ben Simmons for a while now ad he loves it there. It’s a great tradition with the 76ers as far as everything goes. It’s an awesome place. They’ve got superstars on the team right now with Joel (Embiid) and Ben, but I think it’s an awesome city and a great basketball culture.”

Green averaged 12.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists in his freshman season with the Wildcats and he did a lot of good things off the ball. He can move well without it and he is a guy who can defend well on the perimeter as shown by his 1.5 steals per game average.

“I talked to Elton Brand, I talked to the head scout,” Green added. “It was really good. They have a bright future and they’ve definitely got good things going on there.”

As far as his shot goes, he did shoot 36.1% from deep in college on 2.8 attempts per game. It’s not like he does one particular thing well, but he does bring a lot of different skills to the table and he already has a good relationship with Simmons which is always a plus.

“When I first came to America, I think it was one of these high school things came out as far as a mixtape or something like that,” Green explained about his relationship with Simmons. “He was able to reach out to me. I think it’s more an Australian thing. To have a group of Australians now play basketball is super cool.”

Green hails from Australia, just like Simmons, so it is definitely helpful to have a fellow countryman in the states to be able to talk to for advice. On top of that, if the Sixers were able to bring him in, playing next to Simmons would most likely elevate his game as he has a knack for making his teammates better.

Green would also be able to have Simmons right by his side for any advice that he needs.

“Him being able to reach out to me first meant a lot to me, personally and it’s awesome being able to reach out to him,” he added. “Obviously, it’s different paths. He was the number 1 pick and whatnot, but being able to talk to him and him giving me advice has been awesome. He’s a great kid. A great guy and I appreciate our relationship.” [lawrence-related id=39144,39130,39127]

2020 NBA Draft Big Board 5.0: Final update ranking Top 100 prospects

After numerous delays and postponements, front offices and draftniks have had more time to analyze the 2020 NBA draft than any previous year.

After numerous delays and postponements, front offices and draftniks have had more time to analyze the 2020 NBA draft than any previous year.

Originally scheduled for June, the ongoing pandemic pushed the big night back by five months. While this may cause some teams to overthink their decisions, it gave analysts plenty of time to study all of the top prospects eligible in this class.

This year, players had to participate in a mostly virtual pre-draft process. On the bright side, this meant that teams had the opportunity to interview more candidates than ever before.

However, the number of in-person visits were incredibly limited due to the restrictive parameters set by the league. Similarly, the NBA draft combine was conducted without the typical scrimmages where players can separate themselves from the others with impressive on-court performances.

Overall, the players that stood out in this pre-draft process had a different path to recognition than any other year. College basketball players did not have the opportunity to showcase themselves during March Madness. The nation’s top seniors did not get to participate in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament.

As such, executives will rely mostly on the existing game footage as well as the intel they gathered during their conversations with the prospects. We also depended on similar strategies, getting access to one-on-one interviews with more than three dozen prospects and exchanging our thoughts with various scouts across the league.

This helped us put together our final big board, looking at the Top 100 players ranked on their potential to make a difference for teams in the NBA.

Relevant statistics were pulled from Synergy Sports Tech, Bart-Torvik, KenPom, Open Look Analytics and RealGM. Note that the age listed for each player references how old they will be on the night of the draft.

NBA draft: Player comparisons for projected first-rounders

One of the most compelling ways to quickly study any draft class is to look at the NBA comparisons for all of the prospects available.

One of the most compelling ways to quickly study any draft class is to look at the NBA comparisons for all of the prospects available.

Now that the 2020 NBA draft is less than two weeks ago, all of the folks looking for a crash course in learning more about the players that will be available for selection can use this as a guide for the potential outlook of each projected first-round draft pick.

This exercise is far from foolproof, of course, considering that outcomes for each prospect will depend heavily on the teams that draft them as well as the roles they are given and the development process that surrounds them.

But this does give a sense of the archetype that each top prospect fits in so casual fans can get a more succinct view of the next generation entering the league.

While our own opinion was also included, we also studied comparison models and surveyed other experts, including conversations with NBA scouts around the league, to give the best context available. The results included were the most common responses.

Josh Green worked out recently with Jazz ahead of NBA draft

The 6-foot-6 guard averaged 12 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.5 steals in 30 games played last season at Arizona.

Projected first-round pick, and former Arizona guard, Josh Green reportedly worked out recently with the Utah Jazz ahead of the NBA draft on Nov. 18, according to Tony Jones of The Athletic.

The 6-foot-6 guard averaged 12 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.5 steals in 30 games played last season. Green projects to be a solid two-way player given his 6-foot-10 wingspan and ability to shoot after converting on 36.1% of his 3-point attempts.

Green is most commonly projected to be selected in the 22-28 range and figures to be available when the Jazz are on the clock with the 23rd overall pick. Utah has known to be a stout defensive team over the years and Green could be a good fit given his elite ability as a defender.

The Jazz have had a relatively quiet pre-draft process, at least publicly, and haven’t been linked to many prospects. Teams are only permitted 10 in-person workouts so meeting with Green could be an indication of which prospects the front office is interested in.

Sixers 2020 NBA mock draft: Josh Green offers high IQ play from the wing

Arizona wing player Josh Green has been mocked to the Philadelphia 76ers at 21 in the draft.

[jwplayer uUaz3JG9-z6KDnl0B]

The Philadelphia 76ers are entering a new era in their franchise’s history led by new President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey and new coach Doc Rivers. The Sixers will be looking to turn it around on the floor after a tough season.

One positive that came out for Philadelphia was the fact that they were able to land a first-round draft pick thanks to the success of the Oklahoma City Thunder. The pick was top 20 protected and it landed at 21 to give the Sixers an asset in their pocket.

Morey, of course, could trade this pick as he is a guy who is known to make bold moves such as giving up first-round picks in order to help his team win now. After all, with players such as Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid, they are expected to win right away.

In the case that they keep and make the pick, The Ringer has put out a new mock draft and they have the Sixers selecting Arizona wing player Josh Green. In his freshman season for the Wildcats, he averaged 12.0 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists while shooting 36.1% from deep.

The Ringer on the pick:

Green can play with anyone as a high-IQ wing who cuts, passes, and shoots like a savvy veteran. The Sixers need as many players like Green as they can find; thankfully, the 2020 draft class has plenty of options.

Good spot-up 3-point shooter who boasts the touch to hit easy pull-ups. Nifty player with a natural feel for making behind-the-back passes or spinning into a shot, though he needs to settle for fewer floaters. Energetic on-ball defender with good footwork and anticipatory skills, mirroring movements of his opponent.

The basketball IQ point is going to be big for any potential Sixers addition. They have to be able to move off the ball and find open spots on the floor for Simmons to be able to find them as well as give space for Embiid to operate.

In terms of his shooting, as long as he can find his spot on the floor and be able to knock down spot-up looks from deep, that will be perfect next to Simmons. The 6-foot-10 star has excellent vision and he will be able to make the most of what Green has to offer. [lawrence-related id=38844,38840,38834]
