Four San Antonio Spurs see ratings updated for NBA 2K24

A number of San Antonio players saw their ratings changed in the latest granular assessment of play in the league.

Now that the NBA’s trade deadline and 2024 All-Star Week are behind fans of the San Antonio Spurs, they can turn their attention to the news that really matters for the rest of the season (at least, to the gamers, anyway) — the arrival of a new set of NBA 2K24 overall player ratings for the Spurs.

A number of San Antonio players saw their ratings changed in the latest granular assessment of play in the league for the popular basketball simulation game, and most of them were positive. A total of four such players were updated, with three of the four seeing rises.

Let’s take a look at which players, and how they were assessed in this update.

Tre Jones compares playing with Victor Wembanyama vs. Zion Williamson

San Antonio Spurs point guard Tre Jones recently compared playing with Victor Wembanyama to playing with Zion Williamson.

Despite some early-season confusion at the point guard position, the San Antonio Spurs have been rolling with Tre Jones at the one as of late. He’s been playing well, slowly developing a better chemistry with the Spurs’ core group of guys. And heading into their next game against the New Orleans Pelicans, Jones has some unique experience under his belt.

Obviously, Jones is currently playing with first-overall pick Victor Wembanyama, but he also played with the first pick from the 2019 NBA Draft, Zion Williamson. They played together at Duke, so Jones has now played with two of the most dominant big men games in the league (though they are dominant in very different ways).

In a recent interview with Andrew Lopez of ESPN, Jones spoke about what it was like to play with both of them.

“It’s one of one for both of them with the body they’re given and the athletic ability, which is crazy,” Jones said. “But I think the thing that sticks out is they want to win, and that comes first.”

Jones continued, going into more detail.

“They both think the game at a real high level, and I think [it] just comes from them being competitive and wanting to win,” Jones said. “They know that they can dominate the game in so many different ways and just the fact that they’re able to kind of defer to others at times because how the teams are playing them and the amount of attention they bring on the court or the double-teams that they bring instead of forcing it, they’re still able to make the right basketball play at the end of the day to put our team in the best position to win.”

Now, Jones’ focus is winning alongside Wembanyama, but his insight into playing with high-level big men is very interesting.

Victor Wembanyama: Spurs felt absence of Tre Jones in loss to Thunder

Victor Wembanyama said that the San Antonio Spurs missed Tre Jones in their loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The San Antonio Spurs welcomed the Oklahoma City Thunder to town on Wednesday night. Chet Holmgren was in town to take on fellow rookie Victor Wembanyama. Both big men are top candidates to win the Rookie of the Year award, but this game was more than just a one-on-one matchup.

Oklahoma City walked away with a 140-114 win, as they are a much more competitive basketball team this season. However, Wembanyama still put up a solid showing, attempting to lead his team to victory. It just wasn’t enough, as the Spurs were feeling the loss of a key player in the starting lineup.

After the game, Wembanyama spoke about how much the Spurs missed Tre Jones, who missed the game with an ankle issue.

“We felt [Jones’ absence] with the lack sometimes of organization,” Wembanyama said via ESPN. “His expertise is precious. I could feel especially in the second half, third quarter that we needed him, but it happens in a season.”

Wembanyama finished the game with 24 points, 12 rebounds, four assists, one steal, and four blocks while shooting 9-of-18 from the floor and 0-of-3 from behind the three-point line.

With Jones out, Devin Vassell and Blake Wesley handled most of the team’s playmaking duties, finishing the night with seven and six assists, respectively.

Jones has been extremely important to the Spurs’ success this season, running the offense at a high level and helping Wembanyama get into his best spots.

As the season rolls on, Jones’ return should give the Spurs a nice offensive boost whenever he comes back.

Tre Jones discusses monster night in Spurs’ loss to Bulls

After his huge night in the San Antonio Spurs’ loss to the Chicago Bulls, Tre Jones shared some thoughts.

Heading into their Saturday night contest against the Chicago Bulls, the San Antonio Spurs were looking to grab their third win in a row. It would have marked their first three-game win streak of the season. Unfortunately, they were without Victor Wembanyama, who is sitting out back-to-backs as he deals with an ankle injury.

With Wembanyama sidelined, the Spurs could have backed down, but instead, they fought. The Bulls jumped out to a lead in the first half, but San Antonio found themselves up by as many as eight in the fourth quarter. And while the Bulls ended up taking home a 122-116 win, Tre Jones stepped up in a big way for the Spurs.

Inserted into the starting lineup, Jones churned out his best game of the season, and after the game, he broke it down.

“Shots were open, and I took them and made them,” Jones said via ESPN. “It wasn’t anything specific. They were playing off of me a lot. Obviously, they know I like to pass and get my teammates involved. So, I was just trying to take my shot when it was there, make them respect it and play out of that. My shot was feeling good and going in, so that’s always a good feeling.”

Jones ended the game with 30 points, nine rebounds, and four assists while shooting 10-of-13 from the field and 4-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc.

With the Spurs’ struggles at the point guard spot this season, Jones’ big-time showing against the Bulls could be a great sign moving forward.

San Antonio Spurs Injury Report vs. Kings: Devin Vassell OUT, Tre Jones DOUBTFUL, Keldon Johnson QUESTIONABLE

The San Antonio Spurs injury report vs. the Sacramento Kings has been revealed, and Devin Vassell, Tre Jones, and Keldon Johnson are listed.

The San Antonio Spurs injury report for their Friday night game against the Sacramento Kings has been revealed. Devin Vassell is OUT, Tre Jones is DOUBTFUL to play, and Keldon Johnson is QUESTIONABLE for the contest. Vassell has left adductor tightness, Jones is dealing with a right hamstring strain, and Johnson has right knee soreness. Sandro Mamukelashvili is PROBABLE to play with mid back tightness.

Vassell missed two games earlier this season, and if Jones ends up sitting out vs. the Kings, it will mark his third absence in a row. Meanwhile, Johnson missed the Spurs’ last game against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

As for the Kings, they have a few players listed on the injury report as well.

Trey Lyles and Alex Len are both OUT for the game against the Spurs. Lyles is dealing with a left calf strain and has yet to appear in a game this season, while Len will be missing his second game in a row due to a right high ankle sprain. Jordan Ford (two-way) and Colby Jones are both on assignment in the G League and will not be available vs. San Antonio.

Sacramento is just 6-4 on the season but is riding a four-game winning streak that they will hope to extend to five against a Spurs squad that is reeling.

The Spurs will head into this game, led by a healthy Victor Wembanyama and Jeremy Sochan, looking to snap a six-game losing streak.

After their most recent loss, an embarrassing effort against the Thunder, head coach Gregg Popovich lit into his team, stating that while they may be young, they need to have a bit more pride.

San Antonio Spurs Injury Report vs. Heat: Tre Jones QUESTIONABLE

Check out the San Antonio Spurs’ injury report for their Sunday night contest against the Miami Heat.

Ahead of the San Antonio Spurs’ game against the Miami Heat on Sunday night, there is only one player listed on the injury report with an ailment. Tre Jones is QUESTIONABLE to play vs. the Heat as he is currently dealing with right hamstring tightness. Jones has appeared in all nine of the Spurs’ games so far this season.

In addition to Jones, the Spurs are listing multiple players as out for the game due to G League assignment. All three of the team’s two-way players – Dominick Barlow, Sir’Jabari Rice, and Charles Bediako – are all on assignment. Rookie Sidy Cissoko is also out on G League assignment.

As of 1:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, the Heat have not yet submitted their injury report for the game. That said, the Heat’s injury report for their game on Monday night against the Atlanta Hawks was a lengthy one.

Jimmy Butler, Tyler Herro, Caleb Martin, and RJ Hampton all missed the game, while Kevin Love, Duncan Robinson, Dru Smith, and Nikola Jovic were also all listed.

Butler missed the game due to personal reasons, so it’s unclear whether or not he’ll be back to play the Spurs. Herro is dealing with a right ankle sprain and Martin was listed as out due to left knee tendonitis.

The Spurs are just 3-6 on the season, but they could have a chance to make some noise against a potentially banged-up Heat team. That said, it will all depend on how many players are available for Miami on Sunday night.

Tre Jones discusses opponents’ gameplan when facing Victor Wembanyama: ‘Very aggressive with him’

San Antonio Spurs guard Tre Jones recently spoke about the gameplan opponents have been using against Victor Wembanyama.

Through the early portion of the season, the San Antonio Spurs have played well, but in their last two games, they’ve suffered two blowout losses. On Wednesday night, they fell to the New York Knicks, and for the second-straight game, Victor Wembanyama got slowed down. Mitchell Robinson got the best of him.

In 5:00 when guarded by Robinson, Wembanyama shot 0-of-6 from the field and turned the ball over once. And in the previous game, Indiana Pacers forward Obi Toppin found success guarding Wembanyama. Toppin said that the key to guarding him was physicality, something Robinson also utilizes very well on a night-to-night basis.

Tre Jones recently spoke about this gameplan against Wembanyama, noting that as the rookie continues to develop, he’ll get used to it. (H/t Andrew Lopez of ESPN)

Spurs urged to pursue trade for Tre Jones upgrade next season

Should the San Antonio Spurs look for trades to upgrade from Tre Jones at the point guard position?

The San Antonio Spurs drafted Victor Wembanyama this summer, and the selection has changed the entire outlook of their franchise. With guys like Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan also on the roster as Wembanyama’s supporting cast, the Spurs will undoubtedly be prioritizing youth development moving forward, but the talent is there.

However, if the Spurs want to be competitive as soon as possible, they could consider making changes sooner rather than later. There are some clear holes on the roster, as is always the case with rebuilding teams. Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report recently wrote an article detailing risks every team could make next year, and for the Spurs’, the risk would involve filling one of said holes.

Buckley suggested that they look at trade opportunities to upgrade from Tre Jones at the point guard position.

“But how high can they realistically climb with Tre Jones, Cameron Payne and Devonte’ Graham handling the point guard position?” Buckley wrote. “Jones isn’t a scoring threat or a shooter, Payne is best used as a spark-plug scorer, and Graham’s lack of size and athleticism limits him at both ends. This is about as underwhelming as an NBA point guard group can get.

“San Antonio doesn’t have to aim for the stars. Tyus Jones, Tre’s older brother, could be enough of an upgrade to really help connect this club. If the Spurs wanted a bigger return, though, they could pursue it.

“They would make for a fascinating Damian Lillard destination if they could sell him on their vision and might want to have a substantial trade package at the ready should the Atlanta Hawks ever decide to take phone calls on Trae Young.”

Should the Spurs speed things up and trade for a point guard next year?

Spurs’ Tre Jones ranked as NBA’s 32nd-best point guard

San Antonio Spurs point guard Tre Jones was ranked just the 32nd-best point guard in the NBA.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8170″]

The San Antonio Spurs are in a very promising place moving forward, largely thanks to the selection of Victor Wembanyama. But even past that, the Spurs have plenty of great young players on the roster. Guys like Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan have a ton of potential and could be great pieces for years to come.

That being said, San Antonio will have to develop their talent at a very high level if they want to push forward effectively, a feat they have done successfully in the past. One player who could be of particular interest is Tre Jones, who is slated to be the Spurs’ starting point guard next year.

Jones is still only 23 years old, so he has time to improve. However, according to Noah Magaro-George of Air Alamo, Jones is just the 32nd-best point guard in the NBA and ranks in the sixth tier of all point guards.

“Seeing Tre Jones slip to the bottom of the tier list may not be the most encouraging thing Spurs fans have read this summer, but his ranking speaks more to the saturation of talent at point guard than his abilities. After all, he averaged 12.9 points and 6.6 assists in his first season as a starter.

“Though the Spurs could have let the Duke product walk in free agency, the front office re-signed him to a lucrative contract. Jones isn’t the future of the franchise, and that’s alright. He can be a priceless asset as a reliable stopgap who runs the show until San Antonio finds a long-term solution,” Magaro-George wrote.

How well do you think Jones will perform next season?

Spurs’ Tre Jones urged to improve 3-point shooting this offseason

Tre Jones needs to improve his three-point shooting if he wants to take the next step for the San Antonio Spurs.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8170″]

When it comes to the San Antonio Spurs, all eyes have been on Victor Wembanyama. The 19-year-old rookie was selected with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and is widely expected to be one of the best players in the league someday soon. At the very least, he should be the face of the Spurs franchise for years to come.

But while most fans are primarily keeping tabs on Wembanyama, the Spurs need to focus on developing all of their young talent. Tre Jones, who the Spurs just re-signed to a new contract this summer, is someone who should be taking a leap next season.

And according to Jacob Douglas of Pounding the Rock, Jones needs to work on his three-point shooting if he wants to take the next step.

“Nearly all of the data would suggest that Jones is a productive NBA player,” Douglas wrote. “There is just one defect that holds him back from being viewed as a key piece of the Spurs young core – his 28.5% three-point percentage.

“Jones isn’t a volume shooter. He only took 2.3 a game (he shot 158 threes and made 45.) The Spurs don’t need him to be. They have plenty of guys like Devin Vassell, Zach Collins, and Doug McDermott to take five-to-six threes a night. They just need him to be a threat from deep. He has not been that in his first three NBA seasons.”

If Jones can become a reliable three-point shooter, what is his ceiling with the Spurs next year?
