Stashed Boston Celtics floor general Yam Madar signs two-year deal with Fenerbahce

While it looked like there was perhaps at least a small chance that long-stashed Israeli point guard Yam Madar might finally join the Boston Celtics this coming season, instead Madar finds himself embroiled in a contract dispute.

While it looked like there was perhaps at least a small chance that long-stashed Israeli point guard Yam Madar might finally join the Boston Celtics this coming season, instead Madar finds himself embroiled in a contract dispute for the second time in his career.

Madar, who previously fought with Israeli club Hapoel Tel Aviv to leave that team’s roster to make the leap to a higher level of competition, now finds himself at odds with European club KK Partizan Mozzart Bet, having since decided to take his talents to the Turkish basketball powerhouse Fenerbahce Beko after “delayed payments”.

Per Eurohoops’ Bugra Uzar, the Israeli has signed a two-plus-one-year deal with the Istanbul-based ball club that plays in both the Turkish Basketball Super League and the EuroLeague.

Could Israeli point guard Yam Madar finally join the Boston Celtics?

“Madar … could still arrive for training camp after his international duties this summer,” wrote Weiss.

Fans of the Boston Celtics have been waiting to see Israeli floor general Yam Madar get on the court for the team that drafted him in 2020 with the 47th pick since his name was called by Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum that evening. While it is far from a sure thing, rumbling of that taking place have resurfaced in a recent article by The Athletic’s Jared Weiss.

“Israeli point guard Yam Madar, 22 … could still arrive for training camp after his international duties this summer,” Weiss shared. “Boston has room on the back end of its roster for a point guard with good pace control and vision like Madar, though he still has a lot of development both in his skills and physicality to be ready for the NBA.”

“But multiple league sources believe Madar … should be ready for a two-way this upcoming season,” added the Athletic reporter.

With the Celtics still poised to make moves — perhaps substantial ones — to reshape the roster this offseason, it is probably wise for Madar to remain focused on his season with Belgrade’s KK Partizan for 2023-24.

But in the same sort of way that larger-scope moves made a trip across the pond untenable for Madar in the past, it could well see the Beit Dagan native finally make the leap if all goes well for him, too.

Himmelsbach: No Yam Madar or Juhann Begarin for the Las Vegas Summer League Boston Celtics

However, it appears to be less related to the state of the Celtics’ backcourt than “commitments to their European clubs” for the 2023-24 season in their respective leagues.

Fans of the Boston Celtics who make the trek to the Las Vegas Summer League this year are unlikely to see either of the Celtics’ two guards currently stashed in Europe. Per the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach, “neither Juhann Begarin nor Yam Madar are expected to play for the Celtics’ summer league team this year.”

However, that decision appears less related to the state of the Celtics’ backcourt (which may shift considerably depending on how other elements of Boston’s offseason take shape) than commitments to their European clubs for the 2023-24 season.

For Madar, that likely means a larger role with Belgrade’s Partizan NIS. For Begarin, that means an entirely new club as he leaves Paris Basket for Nanterre 92 of the French LNB Pro A League.

Anonymous NBA staffer thinks Yam Madar could help the Boston Celtics in the right role

“He could handle a role of some kind,” they suggested. “He does need to play to keep developing, though”

How do people on the inside of the NBA see the future of Euroleague standout Yam Madar with the Boston Celtics? According to recent reporting from Heavy’s Sean Deveney, better than you might think. The Israeli floor general certainly has some warts on his game to work on, but the feedback Deveney got from an anonymous league staffer hints the EuroLeague Best Young Player. “There are some similarities to (Payton) Pritchard, but for the most part, Madar is smaller physically, more athletic but not as tough,” they shared.

“(T)hat is the big thing he would have to show in the NBA, that he can take the physicality,” continued the unnamed staffer. “He can shoot. He can be an NBA-caliber shooter and he is a decent enough playmaker, he has gotten better there. Not great defensively, though, and that is what got Pritchard benched.”

“But as a cheap option to have on the bench, the 11th man? You could do worse.”

“He could handle a role of some kind,” they suggested. “He does need to play to keep developing, though, you don’t want him to rot on the bench. He is 22, he is not some long-term project anymore.”

“If you bring him over, you’ve got to play him,” observed the unnamed staffer, perhaps hinting at the biggest obstacle (at least, on this version of the Celtics) yet remaining for a Madar NBA debut.

Ex-Celtics big man Guerschon Yabusele apologizes for Dante Exum bodyslam in Partizan-Real Madrid fight

“I deeply regret my behavior at last night’s game,” wrote Yabusele on his Instagram after the loss.

Former Boston Celtics big man Guerschon Yabusele has apologized for an incident in which he bodyslammed fellow former NBAer Dante Exum in the middle of an on-court fight between EuroLeague teams Partizan and Real Madrid on Thursday that resulted in a ruptured tendon and chipped tooth for the latter, per USA TODAY’s Tom Schad.

“Euroleague Basketball strongly condemns the events that happened at the end of the game,” said the league in a statement after the contest was called in favor of Partizan after neither team had the minimum number of players available after the ejections caused by the bench-clearing fight.

“I deeply regret my behavior at last night’s game,” wrote Yabusele on his Instagram after the loss. “Basketball is about sportsmanship and friendship.”

“My sincere apologies to Partizan, a club with which we have always had a great relationship, to Dante Exum and his family, to my teammates, my club, and all the fans.”

“Exum could have broken his spine, seriously injured his head and ended his career,” shared Partizan team doctor Moma Jakovljević, who called for Yabusele’s permanent ejection from the league for the act.

Celtics alums Guerschon Yabusele, Yam Madar’s teams get game canceled over brawl

Yabu ended up bodyslamming a player in the chaos.

It seems that a pair of Boston Celtics alumni found themselves on the opposite side of the European version of a (much more subdued) Malice in the Palace on Thursday, with a match between Spanish club Real Madrid and Belgrade-based ball club KK Partizan.

One of the Celtics’ stashed floor generals, Israeli point guard Yam Madar watched as his team erupted into an all-out brawl with formerly stashed Boston big man Guerschon Yabusele ending up in the thick of things, most notably when he body-slammed fellow ex-NBAer Dante Exum to the hardwood.

The Dancing Bear — as Yabusele is called — and the acts of others as the fight spiraled out of control caused the match to be canceled by the officials things got so bad (h/t to BasketNews).

Why stashed Boston Celtics guard Yam Madar is in no hurry to join the NBA

Hint: It’s all about opportunity.

Stashed Boston Celtics point guard Yam Madar is in no hurry to come over to the NBA just to struggle to get on the floor with the parent club or spend time schlepping around the G League to get the time he needs to grow his game.

Instead, the Israeli floor general has been taking advantage of an opportunity to helm the Israel National Team in the 2022 European Basketball Championship and to be featured with his European pro team, Partizan NIS, in the season to come. The Beit Dagan native does still hope to make the NBA in the future, but on his terms and when he is ready to make an impact.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear a good breakdown on this and his game put together by the folks at the Treese YouTube channel.

Israel drops Eurobasket tilt to Czechia 88-77 as stashed Boston Celtics guard Yam Madar gets 16 points, 5 assists

Boston’s 2020 second-round stash continues to shine despite Israel’s EuroBasket woes.

Stashed Boston Celtics point guard Yam Madar had another solid game in a start for the Israeli National Team on Thursday in FIBA EuroBasket play, but it came in an 88-77 loss to the Czech National Team.

The Beit Dagan native put up a team-high 16 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals in just under 34 minutes of floor time, picking up 3 personal fouls and turning the ball over just once. Madar had himself another hot-shooting night, hitting 5-of-9 from the floor overall, 2-of-5 from beyond the arc, and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe.

The Israeli floor general has been a bright spot for Israel so far in the group stage of EuroBasket play that has seen the Israeli National Team struggle a bit more than they might have been expected to, currently in fifth place of six clubs in Group D with a 2-3 record after the loss.

“We’re disappointed, I would say we’re sad,” said teammate Gal Mekel via Eurohoops. “We wanted to finish this week, but this is basketball. We made some mistakes and we paid for them.”

Where do Boston Celtics alumni rank among the other EuroBasket players?

These are the results of an endeavor to rate the Celtics alumni who are still participating in the European Basketball Championship.

The Boston Celtics have a significant number of alumni (and one stashed player) that are participating in the 2022 FIBA European Basketball Championship (better known as the EuroBasket) underway across the continent of Europe at the moment, with some of them among the highest-rated players taking part in the competition.

But wait, you may be asking, who is doing the rating of these players? Alberto De Roa of HoopsHype has developed a rating system called “Global Rating” — read more about it here — that the HoopsHype analyst applied to the players playing the games making up the EuroBasket so far.

These are the results of De Roa’s endeavor to rate the Celtics alumni who are still participating in the European Basketball Championship.

Yam Madar’s big game can’t stop Nikola Jokic’s Serbia; Israel falls 89-78

The stashed Celtics point guard couldn’t miss, but it wasn’t enough to shut down the Joker and company.

Israel fell to Nikola Jokic’s Serbia, 89-78, on Tuesday despite one of the best games in EuroBasket play yet from stashed Boston Celtics point guard Yam Madar.

The Beit Dagan native put up a team-high 20 points, 4 assists and 2 steals in a little more than 29 minutes of floor time, but it wasn’t enough to get Israel past one of the NBA’s top talents.

The Israeli floor general’s shooting, in particular, shined in the loss. He hit a red-hot 8-of-11 overall and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc in a contest in which Madar had only 3 turnovers and 2 personal fouls.

As good as Madar’s game was, neither he nor any of his Israel National Team companions had an answer for Jokic, who cruised to 29 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks before fouling out in the game’s final frame.

With the loss, Israel falls to 2-2 and is tied with Finland for third place in Group D.
