Celtics injury update: Memphis Grizzlies to sit Morant, Adams, Jackson, Brooks in 2021-22 season finale

The move will allow Boston to choose their seeding destiny.

The Memphis Grizzlies have announced that they will sit several key players in theirs and the Boston Celtics’ final game of the 2021-22 NBA season, which in turn will allow the Celtics to choose their seeding destiny heading into the 2021-22 NBA Playoffs.

Memphis announced that Steven Adams (ankle soreness), Dillon Brooks (hip soreness), Jaren Jackson, Jr. (thigh soreness), Tyus Jones (hand soreness), Ja Morant (knee soreness), Tyrell Terry (foot soreness), and Killian Tillie (knee soreness) all are out for Sunday night’s season-ending contest, with Desmond Bane (foot soreness) and Brandon Clarke (thigh contusion) listed as questionable.

With the Milwaukee Bucks playing the Cleveland Cavaliers without several key players of their own out to rest before the postseason, the Celtics may be in a position to rest players themselves if dropping to a lower seed seems more desirable — or to play good players and seize the second seed for themselves.

Mavericks’ Tyrell Terry off to strong start on NBA G League assignment

The Mavericks’ second-round pick turned in another strong performance on assignment in the NBA G League on Thursday in a win.

After scoring 19 points in his NBA G League debut, Dallas Mavericks guard Tyrell Terry followed that performance up on Thursday by producing 18 points to help lead the Memphis Hustle to a win over the Canton Charge.

Terry, who was flex-assigned to the Hustle because the Mavericks did not field a team in the G League bubble, added eight rebounds, three assists and one steal in 34 minutes of action. He finished by shooting 6-of-21 from the field, including 2-of-8 from 3-point range.

The second-round got off to a strong start on Thursday, recording 14 points alone in the first half on 5-of-9 shooting. He has found success in his first two games driving to the basket and he has had a few impressive finishes in traffic, while also throwing down some dunks.

Terry played sparingly with the Mavericks to begin the season and the opportunity to play in the G League bubble should prove to be highly beneficial for his development.

Teams in the bubble will each play 15 games during the regular season, and it will certainly be worth monitoring how Terry progresses throughout the course of his stay at the Wide World of Sports Complex.

Notable names to know during the G League bubble season

Top prospects like Jonathan Kuminga and Jalen Green are competing against NBA veterans like Jeremy Lin.

The 2021 NBA G League season, featuring big names like Jonathan Kuminga and Jalen Green, kicked off Wednesday afternoon.

Even before the pandemic, this season was going to look and feel different than any other because it was the debut of the G League Ignite squad. This is the inaugural campaign for the team, an alternative to the NCAA that offers a pathway to the NBA for top prospects.

But this season is also different than normal because, just like the NBA did to finish out the 2019-20 season, the league is playing in a bubble location at the ESPN Wide World of Sport Complex in Florida.

The seventeen teams that opted into playing will have a condensed schedule of fifteen games between Feb. 10-March 6. Single-elimination playoffs begin on March 8 and the NBA G League Finals is on March 11.

Below are some of the most interesting players worth tracking as the games continue over the next few weeks.

The players most likely to outperform their 2020 NBA draft position

Every year, the winners of the draft are the teams who find the hidden gems that are able to exceed expectations of where they were picked.

Every year, the winners of the draft are the teams who find the hidden gems that are able to exceed expectations of where they were picked.

Due to the ongoing global pandemic, many prospects struggled to separate themselves the way they would have in a typical pre-draft process. Drafting is never an exact science but this year, specifically, it would not be a surprise if one of the players who has the best career was not selected in the lottery.

Below are the top three prospects who we feel were especially good value picks and could end up being considered draft-day steals when it’s all said and done.

Sixers 2020 NBA mock draft: Stanford’s Tyrell Terry is the choice at 21

The final mock draft for 2020 has the Philadelphia 76ers selecting Stanford’s Tyrell Terry.

The 2020 NBA draft is finally here. It is Wednesday and now is the time for teams to get their draft picks in order for a big night where they look to find the next piece for their roster.

For the Philadelphia 76ers, there is still no guarantee of what the team will do heading into this draft. With Daryl Morey in the building as the president of basketball operations, the Sixers could absolutely trade the 21st pick in this draft in order for somebody who can help them win a title right now.

For the moment, they have this pick. Now is the time for the final mock drafts. A mock draft performed by the NBA Wire staff and put together by our sister site, Rookie Wire, has the Sixers selecting Stanford’s Tyrell Terry at 21:

Philadelphia needs shooting in the worst way possible. Their offense was a train wreck in the 2019-20 season. Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid struggled to find any room to operate with Al Horford also clogging up the middle.

Terry shot 40.8% from deep as a freshman at Stanford, so that fills the need for a shooter and he also does a terrific job of setting up others. With that in mind, he brings a dual threat to the position as a shooter and a ball-handler which are two needs the Sixers have.

Philadelphia will definitely be one team to keep an eye on as draft night continues to inch closer. The Sixers will be under a lot of pressure to make a big move either in the trade market to get out of Horford’s contract or they have to nail down this pick in order to get the proper spacing on the floor.

Tyrell Terry among prospects to work out with Nets ahead of 2020 NBA draft

Not only has Tyrell Terry met with the Nets over Zoom, but the Stanford guard has also worked out for Brooklyn.

Tyrell Terry became the third 2020 NBA draft prospect to confirm he has worked out for the Brooklyn Nets ahead of the big event on Wednesday — fellow guards RJ Hampton and Theo Maledon being the other two.

Among those in attendance for the Stanford guard’s workout was Nets general manager Sean Marks.

“I was able to put myself through my own workout that me and my trainer usually do, and they kind of just came and watched,” Terry said on Zoom call with media Tuesday. “That went well and then I had dinner with them, as well, to kinda catch up [and] get to know them a little bit better.”

Terry is also the first 2020 draft prospect to reveal he spoke with the Nets a second time over Zoom, in addition to the workout session.

“I think my meeting with them and both my Zoom interviews went really well with them,” he said. “I think I was able to leave a good impression on them from my meeting and my Zoom interviews.”

Whatever his role winds up being in Brooklyn, Terry thinks he’ll fit in well with the Nets.

“And I think my fit with them, there are rumors that they’re trying to do some big roster moves,” the Stanford guard said. “So I think for me, just going in there and doing what I do is the biggest thing that I can do. Whether that’s gonna be learning from veterans or maybe even [making] a contribution right away, But I think for me, going into that roster, I just need to go and do what I do right away.”

Brooklyn has also spoken to:

  • Maryland big man Jalen Smith
  • TCU sharpshooter Desmond Bane
  • Memphis forward Precious Achiuwa
  • Kentucky guard Immanuel Quickley
  • New Zealand Breakers guard RJ Hampton
  • SE Melbourne wing Terry Armstrong
  • ASVEL guard Theo Maledon
  • Prep-to-pro prospect Josh Hall
  • Prep-to-pro prospect Karim Mane
  • Arizona guard Nico Mannion
  • Arizona big man Zeke Nnaji
  • Washington big man Isaiah Stewart
  • Washington forward Jaden McDaniels
  • Arizona wing Josh McDaniels
  • Duke big man Vernon Carey

Tyrell Terry ready to gain respect from future veteran teammates

The projected first-round pick wants to bring a strong work ethic on and off of the court to whichever organization selects him.

Projected first-round pick Tyrell Terry, like most prospects, doesn’t know which team will call his name in the NBA draft on Wednesday but the former Stanford guard will be looking to come in and earn the trust of his new teammates right away.

Terry said Tuesday on a conference call with reporters that he has worked out with the Brooklyn Nets and Memphis Grizzlies while he met virtually with several others, including the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers among others.

Whether it is one of the teams he has spoken with, or a different team, Terry wants to bring a strong work ethic on and off of the court to whichever organization selects him.

“I think right away I will be able to bring a high-level of unselfishness whether I come in and I am able to contribute right away or whether I come off of the bench, something I’m willing to do,” Terry said. “I think that’s the biggest thing I can do coming in right away and also [bring] a level of work ethic. I want to be the first one in the gym and the last one out. As a rookie to get gain the respect from these veterans, I think that’s something I can contribute to a roster right away coming in.”

Terry has had a productive pre-draft process, both on and off the court. He has interviewed very well with teams and has demonstrated a high-level IQ. He even “broke a record” for his testing during meetings administered by multiple teams.

The 20-year-old has spent much of the pre-draft process training in Indianapolis and said he has worked the most on his physique and step-back shooting. He has reportedly added roughly 15 pounds of muscle while he also grew an inch during testing at the combine.

Terry has done a good job of preparing for the next level and appears to have the right attitude heading into the NBA draft. Combine that with his skill set on the court and he appears to be a strong fit with just about any team in the league.

Stanford’s Tyrell Terry has kept in contact with Sixers through draft process

Stanford prospect Tyrell Terry has kept in touch with the Philadelphia 76ers during this draft process.

The Philadelphia 76ers are getting set for an interesting draft night on Wednesday that will be done virtually as everybody stays safe from the global pandemic. Due to the current state of affairs, their contact with prospects has had to be done through Zoom calls.

One prospect that they have kept a lot of contact with is Stanford’s Tyrell Terry who has been a popular mock draft pick for Philadelphia at 21. They had a draft interview with Terry early in the process, but as the draft itself comes closer, the Sixers appear to have continued interest in the shooter.

“I did a Zoom interview with them a while back,” said Terry on Tuesday. “My agent has been in contact with them as well. Talking to them, trying to see what they’re trying to do, see what my fit is there, and their interest in me. My agent and my camp have been in contact with the 76ers as of recent.”

The question now becomes, who has his camp been speaking with? Was it VP of Scouting Vince Rozman or was it general manager Elton Brand and President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey?

According to Terry, it has been with Brand and Morey who are the two biggest voices in the room.

“My agents have been in contact with both of those people,” he said referring to Brand and Morey.

Terry would be a great fit on this team as he fills a lot of needs that the team currently possesses. He can shoot the ball well at 40.8% from deep, he can get to the basket, he can put the ball on the floor and create for others, and he can also even tackle some ball-handling responsibilities.

There is no guarantee that the Sixers even make this pick. Since Morey is with the team now, there has been a lot of talks about him potentially trading this pick and going after a guy who can help Philadelphia win now. All of that is purely speculation at the moment due to Morey’s reputation, but if the Sixers do keep and make the pick, Terry makes a lot of sense at 21. [lawrence-related id=39161,39157,39147]

Sixers VP of Scouting Vince Rozman explains how team draft process works

Philadelphia 76ers VP of Scouting Vince Rozman explains how the team will go about their draft process before Wednesday.

The 2020 NBA draft is going to be something that has never been seen before. It will be done virtually, there is very little that teams can work with, and there have not been too many in-person workouts due to the global pandemic.

For the Philadelphia 76ers, they are handling all of these new challenges while also working in a new front office regime. The Sixers have brought in Daryl Morey to be the team’s new President of Basketball Operations and he will work with general manager Elton Brand and coach Doc Rivers to get the team back on track.

Due to the new challenges of the draft as well as the overhaul in management, the Sixers have to lean more on their scouting department to get the job done. Vice President of Scouting Vince Rozman explained just how these new draft interviews have gone and what the team is looking for in the Zoom calls, for example like the one the team did with Tyrell Terry.

“You don’t want to think you’ve learned too much about a guy after 40 minutes,” Rozman explained. “Just to get a sense of who they are. How they think the game. We like to dig in a lot of on-court analysis. If you can put them through some hypothetical spots on the floor. Like ‘How do you think of this play?’ and ‘Here’s a play we saw you struggle with in college. What may or may not have been the causes there?’ So you like to get a sense of how well they can talk the game and when they’re in a room with coach Rivers, are they going to be able to pick up his direction and how quick?”

When it comes to the Zoom calls, there is only so much one can learn from a prospect. There is a finite amount of time and it comes down to being able to identify what a player can bring to the floor right away. Rozman has been on the majority of the calls, but he also has had some help with him.

“We’ve gone through almost every iteration,” he explained. “I’ve generally been on a lot of them and led them. Matt Lily, our G League GM, has been on a lot of them and led them and various members of our scouting staff and front office staff has been on various times.”

When it comes to draft night on Wednesday, a question that some have is who will have input? There are so many new voices in this front office now, but Rozman pointed out three specific names that will be involved in the final decision.

“With regards to draft night, obviously Daryl is the President of Basketball Operations and he’s going to lead those decisions,” he finished with. “I think Elton and coach Rivers are also very key to his world right now. I think those guys will work together and we as scouting are going to give them all the information they need to make whatever decision comes our way.” [lawrence-related id=39127,39124,38993]

2020 NBA Draft Big Board 5.0: Final update ranking Top 100 prospects

After numerous delays and postponements, front offices and draftniks have had more time to analyze the 2020 NBA draft than any previous year.

After numerous delays and postponements, front offices and draftniks have had more time to analyze the 2020 NBA draft than any previous year.

Originally scheduled for June, the ongoing pandemic pushed the big night back by five months. While this may cause some teams to overthink their decisions, it gave analysts plenty of time to study all of the top prospects eligible in this class.

This year, players had to participate in a mostly virtual pre-draft process. On the bright side, this meant that teams had the opportunity to interview more candidates than ever before.

However, the number of in-person visits were incredibly limited due to the restrictive parameters set by the league. Similarly, the NBA draft combine was conducted without the typical scrimmages where players can separate themselves from the others with impressive on-court performances.

Overall, the players that stood out in this pre-draft process had a different path to recognition than any other year. College basketball players did not have the opportunity to showcase themselves during March Madness. The nation’s top seniors did not get to participate in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament.

As such, executives will rely mostly on the existing game footage as well as the intel they gathered during their conversations with the prospects. We also depended on similar strategies, getting access to one-on-one interviews with more than three dozen prospects and exchanging our thoughts with various scouts across the league.

This helped us put together our final big board, looking at the Top 100 players ranked on their potential to make a difference for teams in the NBA.

Relevant statistics were pulled from Synergy Sports Tech, Bart-Torvik, KenPom, Open Look Analytics and RealGM. Note that the age listed for each player references how old they will be on the night of the draft.
