Spurs star Devin Vassell’s end-of-season media availability

Check out the end-of-season media availability for San Antonio Spurs star Devin Vassell.

After an injury-plagued year in the 2022-23 season, Devin Vassell came into this year with something to prove. He looked great in the games he appeared in when he wasn’t injured, but this time around, next to star rookie Victor Wembanyama, Vassell turned things up a notch and turned into a legitimate star wing.

Vassell’s perimeter scoring was crucial to the success of the Spurs, and his ball-handling abilities steadily improved, too. Most importantly, however, Vassell’s chemistry next to Wembanyama got better and better, and as San Antonio looks to make a push for the playoffs in coming years, that will be very important.

With the season having come and gone, Vassell did his end-of-season media availability, and the Spurs’ official YouTube channel posted the full video.

It was a great year for Vassell, and while the Spurs will look to add pieces this summer to help improve the team around Wembanyama, the star wing will undoubtedly be a huge part of their future.

How serious are the injuries to San Antonio Spurs’ Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan?

Could they have something going on we ought to be worried about?

How serious are the injuries to San Antonio Spurs forwards Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan, both of whom are sidelined for the rest of the 2023-24 regular season? If they were banged up enough to miss several weeks of the remaining schedule even in a season with nothing to prove, could they have something going on we ought to be worried about?

We would comment as a doctor ourselves, but our terminal degree is of the PhD variety. But the host of the “Locked On Spurs” podcast, Jeff Garcia, caught up with Dr. Ryan McCorkle to talk it over.

The pair discussed Vassell’s and Sochan’s injuries, why it might have sidelined them for the remainder of the season, and the nature and potential duration of their absences.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what they had to say about Sochan and Vassell’s health, and what it means for the Spurs’ future.

Reacting to Devin Vassell, Jeremy Sochan out for the remainder of the Spurs season

Will they cycle through some G League players to try to find cheap depth? Or go entirely in the other direction and shut down Wemby instead?

How will the San Antonio Spurs approach the end of their 2023-24 regular season schedule now that the team’s front office has elected to shut down forwards Devin Vassell and Jeremy Sochan for the rest of the campaign?

Will they cycle through some G League players to try to find some cheap depth? Or go entirely in the other direction and shut down star French rookie phenom Victor Wembanyama instead to keep him healthy for a season in which the Spurs have a roster capable of making some noise behind them? A possible alternative to split the difference with a reduction in Wemby’s minutes instead of icing him for 2023-24 could also be selected as a potential direction for the Spurs to take.

To talk it over, the host of the “Locked On Spurs” podcast, Jeff Garcia, linked up with KENS 5’s Vinnie Vinzetta on a recent episode of his show.

Report: San Antonio to shut down Devin Vassell, Jeremey Sochan for season due to injury

The news likely signals an end to truly competitive basketball for San Antonio for the rest of 2023-24.

Fans of the San Antonio Spurs who were hoping to catch Devin Vassell or Jeremy Sochan live before the end of the NBA’s 2023-24 campaign will be disappointed to hear that both are being shut down for the rest of the season due to injuries.

According to recent reporting from the AP, Vassell and Sochan will spend the rest of this season healing up, with Vassell’s MRI today revealing that he has a stress reaction in the third metatarsal head of his right foot. Sochan reportedly is dealing with an ankle impingement in his left foot that will require arthroscopic surgery.

The news likely signals an end to truly competitive basketball for San Antonio for the rest of 2023-24, though expect plenty of interesting wrinkles from coach Gregg Popovich and Co. as they use what games remain to tinker.

The Spurs play the Denver Nuggets on the road this coming Tuesday night, and still have another tilt vs. Denver, the Philadelphia 76ers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and the New Orleans Pelicans left on the schedule.

Devin Vassell breaks down moments before Spurs win over Knicks

After the San Antonio Spurs’ win over the New York Knicks, Devin Vassell spoke about the team’s pre-game mindset.

It’s been a fairly rough season for the San Antonio Spurs this year, as they have been at the bottom of the Western Conference for the majority of the season. The presence of Victor Wembanyama has given fans something to root for, but as of late, they’ve also been improving their level of play, leading to more wins.

Heading into their Friday night contest against the New York Knicks, the Spurs had won two games in a row. They took down the Phoenix Suns without Wembanyama in the lineup, and just a couple of days later, they earned a win over Utah Jazz in which Devin Vassell dropped an impressive 31 points.

“Three in a row, that’s all we were talking about,” Vassell said of the team’s mindset before the Knicks game. “Can we please get this one to make it three in a row?”

Vassell finished the game against the Knicks with 23 points, two rebounds, seven assists, and one steal while shooting 10-of-22 from the field and 3-of-10 from beyond the three-point arc.

Devin Vassell breaks down offensive process after Spurs win over Jazz

After the San Antonio Spurs’ win over the Utah Jazz, Devin Vassell broke down his offensive process.

On Wednesday night, the San Antonio Spurs played their first road game in over two weeks. They enjoyed a nice homestand capped off by a win over the Phoenix Suns, and they were able to keep up that momentum on the road. They took down the Utah Jazz by a score of 118-111 as Victor Wembanyama reentered the lineup after a one-game absence.

However, in a nice change of pace, Wembanyama wasn’t the star of the show on Wednesday. Instead, it was Devin Vassell, who dropped a team-high 31 points against the Jazz. The fourth-year wing completely dominated the offensive end of the floor.

“Get downhill, get to my spots, pick them apart,” Vassell said. “If they’re trapping me, I can hit the short roll or skip or whatever the pass is, and they’ve been knocking down shots.”

In addition to his 31 points, Vassell also added four rebounds, six assists, and one steal to his totals. He shot 12-of-20 from the floor and 4-of-8 from behind the three-point line.

Devin Vassell pokes fun at Victor Wembanyama for blocked shots

San Antonio Spurs wing Devin Vassell recently spoke about Victor Wembanyama’s wild shot-blocking abilities.

In just his rookie season in the NBA, Victor Wembanyama already leads the league in blocks. Despite the San Antonio Spurs’ vast struggles on the defensive side of the ball, he’s proven to be a menace on that end. Once the team puts some better pieces around him, the Spurs should be one of the most annoying defenses in the league.

Having Wembanyama roaming the paint behind the defense gives the Spurs a massive advantage. It’s just one that they need to get used to taking advantage of. However, they also understand how big of a luxury it is to have a guy like Wembanyama backing them up.

“I get on him sometimes, I say, ‘Vic, why didn’t you block that shot? ’ and he’s already had five or six blocks,” Vassell said. “It’s just crazy the stuff we ask of him and expect of him, but he’s put himself at that level. We expect it from him night in and night out.”

Since the All-Star break, Wembanyama is averaging 4.4 blocks per game.

Devin Vassell says he works on crazy three from Spurs win over Jazz

Devin Vassell said that he works on the crazy three he hit in the San Antonio Spurs’ win over the Utah Jazz.

The San Antonio Spurs took on the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night, picking up their second win in a row following a victory over the Phoenix Suns. They beat the Jazz by a score of 118-111, getting Victor Wembanyama back in the lineup after he missed their win over Phoenix. However, it was Devin Vassell who propelled San Antonio to victory.

Vassell had a monster night to the point where he was even hitting some wild shots throughout the course of the night. The craziest of which was a one-legged, fadeaway three in the corner with just seconds left in the shot clock at the end of the second quarter.

After the game, however, Vassell said that he works on that shot. (H/t Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express-News)

“I actually work on that a lot,” Vassell said. “It might sound cliché, but I work on a lot of crazy shots. That’s why when people say I shoot some crazy shots, it’s because I shoot and work on a lot of crazy shots. At least one finally went in.”

Vassell finished the game with 31 points, leading the charge for the Spurs.

Devin Vassell wants to be ‘defensive anchor’ for Spurs

Devin Vassell said the he wants to be a “defensive anchor” for the San Antonio Spurs.

As the season goes on for the San Antonio Spurs, games will inevitably mean less and less. The Spurs have already been eliminated from playoff contention, so the only thing they are playing for now is internal improvement. That said, they have now won two games in a row and are feeling pretty good about themselves.

One area they should be focusing on for improvement purposes is the defensive end. Having Victor Wembanyama down low defending the rim gives them a serious advantage, but they’ve still been one of the worst defenses in the league so far this season, meaning there is plenty of room for improvement.

“I’m just trying to be a leader out there on both ends of the floor,” Vassell said. “I talked about it earlier in the season where I just want to be that defensive anchor. I want to be somebody who is picking up and just being disruptive. Defensive end, I’ve been trying to anchor that and offensively coach puts me in a great position to get downhill. Get to my spots. Pick them apart.”

Vassell put up 31 points against the Jazz, but he was just as active on the defensive side of the ball.

Gregg Popovich jokes about Devin Vassell after Spurs win over Jazz

After the San Antonio Spurs’ win over the Utah Jazz, Gregg Popovich joked about Devin Vassell, who led the way with 31 points.

For the entire season, Victor Wembanyama has been the center of attention in regard to the San Antonio Spurs. There have been more eyes on San Antonio this year than since the Big 3 of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginobili ruled the Spurs organization. And while Wembanyama is the reason for that, Devin Vassell has taken advantage.

The fourth-year wing has been having a very impressive season, and he’s been getting more credit for it since more people are tuning in. His latest great showing came against the Utah Jazz on Wednesday night, as the Spurs picked up a 118-111 win with him leading the way.

After the game, head coach Gregg Popovich joked about Vassell’s performance, noting that he was worried he may be too tired from having to guard Collin Sexton. (H/t Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express-News)

“He had to guard Sexton a lot, so I was afraid he might get too tired to shoot the damn thing,” Popovich said.

Luckily, Vassell stepped up to the plate.

“He pushed through and was a monster at both ends,” Popovich said.

Vassell finished the game with 31 points, four rebounds, six assists, and one steal while shooting 12-of-20 from the floor and 4-of-8 from behind the three-point line.
