John Franklin-Myers among 5 Jets who quietly shined in 2020

Jets Wire takes a look at five players who quietly shined for New York during a rather forgettable 2020 season.

The Jets haven’t had a lot to hang their hats on with the 2020 season coming to a close Sunday.

That said, the team has found players who have played significant roles that can be building blocks and depth pieces for an organization looking to move in a different direction. Once Week 17 officially commences, the Jets will likely begin searching for their third head coach in five years. Even as the franchise turns a new leaf, it’s encouraging for the team’s front office that there have been contributing players who can play a significant role in the team’s development moving forward.

Let’s take a look at some New York players who quietly shined during the 2020 season.

Jets DL Quinnen Williams done for the season

Quinnen Williams is done for the season due to a neck injury and a concussion.

Quinnen Williams’ breakout sophomore season has ended.

Adam Gase said Wednesday that Williams will be placed on injured reserve with a neck injury and a concussion. He’ll have to clear the concussion protocol before being placed on injured reserve, though. Williams suffered those injuries in Sunday’s 23-20 win over the Rams.

The second-year player out of Alabama emerged as one of the NFL’s top, young interior defensive linemen this season. In 13 games, Williams registered 53 total tackles, seven sacks, three pass defenses and two forced fumbles.

Now the question with Williams will be whether he can replicate his production in 2021. If he can, that would give the Jets a true force along their defensive line.

In other injury news, CB Javelin Guidry (knee) won’t practice on Wednesday. WR Jamison Crowder, WR Denzel Mims, WR Jeff Smith, OL Josh Andrews, LB Frankie Luvu and DL John Franklin-Myers will all be limited.

Jets defense in for an overhaul in 2021

Joe Douglas could lose as many as seven starters to free agency as well as more with roster cuts as he continues his Jets rebuild

A lot of change should be coming to One Jets Drive in 2021 as Joe Douglas continues his rebuild, and there could be a lot on the defensive side of the ball.

The Jets have just $70 million tied to the defense – the sixth-lowest in the league, according to Over The Cap – with seven starters set to hit free agency after this season. Ten others have expiring contracts and a few more players could be released as well.

Safety Marcus Maye and cornerback Brian Poole could possibly return if the Jets can get a good price. The rest of the starters – Bradley McDougald, Pierre Desir, Tarell Basham, Jordan Jenkins and Neville Hewitt – could all be on their way out after a season filled with poor defensive showings. Other players like defensive linemen Henry Anderson and Nathan Shepherd haven’t played well and would save the Jets money if cut early, too.

That would leave the Jets with a very small core of players. Quinnen Williams, Folorunso Fatukasi and John Franklin-Myers look great on the defensive line, while defensive backs Ashtyn Davis and Bless Austin and linebacker Blake Cashman should continue to improve with more playing time. Cornerback Bryce Hall and pass rusher Jabari Zuniga remain question marks after spending most of their rookie seasons injured. Don’t forget, linebacker C.J. Mosley will return as well after basically a two-year hiatus.

While that group isn’t awful, there would be a lot of gaps to fill if Douglas cleans house.

Where will Douglas find his replacements? It’s hard to say. The free agent class is shallow and mostly filled with expensive veterans. Guys like Patrick Peterson, Matt Judon, Shaq Barrett and Melvin Ingram will all cost a lot more than Douglas would probably like to spend and all have reached the peak of their careers.

The draft, too, isn’t great at the top, but Douglas could find some solid prospects with his late first- or early second-round picks after potentially using his first pick on a quarterback or offensive lineman. Someone like Ohio State cornerback Shaun Wade or Miami pass rusher Quincy Roche are possibilities. A trade or two could be on the table, as well, but that doesn’t seem like Douglas’ style unless he takes a gamble on an inexpensive player or moves up in the draft for a guy he really likes.

Rebuilding the defense is easier said than done, but it’s necessary – especially if Gregg Williams doesn’t return as defensive coordinator next season.

The unit as a whole took a step back this season. A year after allowing the seventh-fewest yards per game and allowing 22 points per game, the Jets defense ranks 27th in yards allowed and 30th in points allowed. New York saw a precipitous drop in run defense as well – dropping from second to 18 in rushing yards allowed and from ninth to 24th in rushing touchdowns allowed. Trading Jamal Adams couldn’t have accounted for that much of a drop-off.

A lot of the Jets’ 2021 success hinges on Douglas’ second full offseason as general manager. That will especially be true for a defense that’s suffered mightily this year. If Douglas doesn’t keep a lot of the Jets’ starters from this season, he’ll have to take some big risks in the draft and free agency.

Jets injury report: Mekhi Becton doubtful, 5 listed as questionable

Mekhi Becton is doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Dolphins with a shoulder injury.

Mekhi Becton took a step in the right direction on Friday, but he’s likely not ready to play just yet.

Becton (shoulder) was limited in practice on Friday after not practicing all week. However, he is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Dolphins. Sam Darnold (shoulder) is also listed as doubtful, but didn’t practice all week. Joe Flacco will make his second consecutive start.

Bless Austin didn’t practice on Friday as well, but it was not injury-related. He has a calf injury and is listed as questionable after being limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday.

John Franklin-Myers (foot), Alex Lewis (shoulder), Breshad Perriman (ankle) and Quinnen Williams (hamstring) are all questionable. Denzel Mims is not expected to play as well.

As for the Dolphins, Shaq Lawson (shoulder), Durharn Smythe (knee) and Kyle Van Noy (groin) are questionable.

Jets defender quietly impressing as he steals snaps on the line

John Franklin-Myers is quietly developing into a disruptive pass-rusher as he continues to make the most out of his limited opportunities.

John Franklin-Myers went from making impactful plays on the NFL’s biggest stage to out of a job within a span of five months. Now the Jets have armed the defensive lineman with a second chance, and he’s quietly wreaking havoc and stealing snaps for a team that has few other bright spots.

A fourth-round pick of the Rams’ in 2018, Franklin-Myers showed promise as a rookie, totaling 17 pressures, 11 hurries, four knockdowns and two sacks over 301 defensive snaps. The highlight of his young career came in Super Bowl LIII, when he recorded a sack and a fumble against Tom Brady and the Patriots.

And yet, it was only months later that Franklin-Myers was waived by Los Angeles during final roster cuts before the 2019 season. Soon, however, a new chapter would begin for him.

The Jets hired Joe Douglas in June 2019, so the general manager missed out on drafting a young core for his new team. Instead, he milked New York’s priority on the waiver wire following final cuts and was able to snag Franklin-Myers. After missing his first season in green and white with a groin injury, the defender is now making the most of his increasing opportunities.

The defensive lineman has quietly shown flashes while taking snaps from players like Herny Anderson, Nathan Shepherd and Kyle Phillips. While Franklin-Myers has taken just 79 defensive snaps, which ranks 16th on the team, he leads Gang Green with five quarterback hits and six quarterback hurries. He is also New York’s highest-graded defender (82.8), per Pro Football Focus.

Franklin-Myers is winning with consistency and is doing so by getting handsy. While he has been impressive on the stat sheet, he was able to push aside Colts All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson with relative ease in Week 3, drawing a holding penalty. He later batted down a pass from Philip Rivers.

While snaps for Franklin-Myers have been scarce, he again made his presence felt in New York’s 37-28 Week 4 loss vs. Denver. Franklin-Myers was credited with six pressures on just 19 pass-rush snaps.

On the season, he has 11 total pressures on 47 pass-rush snaps. That’s a 23.4% rate, which is the highest of any qualified interior defensive lineman this season, according to Michael Nania. Coming in at second? Franklin-Myers’ former teammate, All-Pro DT Aaron Donald, who has an 18.9% pass-rushing rate.

Franklin-Myers has yet to have a coming-out party or a sack, but he has been New York’s best-kept secret on the defensive side of the ball.

As Franklin-Myers continues to make the most out of limited playing time, the Jets should consider benching Anderson full-time. Since signing a three-year, $25.2 million extension with former general manager Mike Maccagnan, Anderson has been invisible. The 29-year-old has recorded just one pressure in 35 snaps over the past three weeks and has more roughing the passer penalties than sacks since 2019. His snaps should be going to Franklin-Myers.

While an 0-4 start for the Jets has painted a rather bleak outlook for the remainder of the season, Franklin-Myers’ ascension as a disruptive pass-rusher should be a storyline moving forward. The Jets just need to keep expanding his playing time.

Jets vs. Cardinals: Mekhi Becton, Breshad Perriman doubtful for Week 5

Mekhi Becton and Breshad Perriman are listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Cardinals.

The Jets will likely be without two key offensive players on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals.

Mekhi Becton (shoulder) and Breshad Perriman (ankle) are listed as doubtful for Week 5 after both didn’t practice this week. Becton wasn’t supposed to play last week against Denver until Chuma Edoga went down with an injury and was forced to come in the game. Becton lasted all of 16 snaps before the pain was too much.

For Perriman, this will be the third consecutive game that he’s out.

Bless Austin (calf), Ashtyn Davis (groin), John Franklin-Myers (foot), Chris Hogan (ribs/knee) and Jordan Jenkins (shoulder/calf) are all listed as questionable.

Sam Darnold was already ruled out with a right shoulder sprain. Joe Flacco will get the nod at starting quarterback.

As for the Cardinals, OLB Devon Kennard will not play. S Chris Banjo, TE Darrell Daniels and DT Jordan Phillips are questionable for Arizona.

Jets injury report: Jamison Crowder, George Fant to return vs. Broncos

Jamison Crowder and George Fant are expected to play Thursday night against the Broncos.

The Jets are getting some reinforcements back from injury for Thursday’s game against the Denver Broncos.

Jamison Crowder (hamstring) and George Fant (concussion) are expected to make their return Thursday night. Crowder was limited in practice all week, while Fant practiced fully on Wednesday. Crowder is listed as questionable for Thursday’s game.

Other players listed as questionable include Jordan Jenkins (shoulder), Chris Hogan (ribs/knee), John Franklin-Myers (knee) and Mekhi Becton (shoulder). All are expected to be available, though.

Jordan Willis (ankle) and Ashtyn Davis (concussion) are listed as doubtful, while Breshad Perriman (ankle) is out.

As for the Broncos, Drew Lock (shoulder) is out as expected, as is Jeremiah Attaochu (quadriceps). Phillip Lindsay (foot) and Davontae Harris (hamstring) are questionable.

Jets injury report: Breshad Perriman sits out practice with knee injury

Breshad Perriman was held out of Sunday’s practice due to a knee injury.

Add Breshad Perriman to the list of injured Jets wide receivers.

Perriman sat out of Sunday’s practice due to a knee injury. His knee swelled up a bit on Saturday, but the injury is not considered serious and the expectation is that he’ll be back on Monday.

RT Chuma Edoga didn’t finish practice, as he suffered a calf injury. Edoga is in a battle at right tackle with George Fant. Meanwhile, LB Patrick Onwuasor had tests done on his knee that revealed no torn ligaments. He’ll be out for an extended period of time.

WR Denzel Mims (hamstring), CB Brian Poole (dehydration), CB Pierre Desir (hamstring) LB James Burgess (back), Corbin Kaufusi (hamstring), RB Josh Adams (hamstring), S Mathias Farley (hamstring), OL Connor McDermott (knee), DL John Franklin Myers (groin) and DE Jabari Zuniga (quad) were all held out of practice once again. Poole had an extreme reaction to dehydration due to an undisclosed condition.

LB Avery Williamson said he felt good in his return to practice after being out for about a year with a torn ACL.

Jets injury report: Patrick Onwuasor among 3 new injuries

Patrick Onwuasor, Josh Adams and John Franklin Myers all suffered new injuries for the Jets.

The New York Jets announced three new injuries on Saturday.

Patrick Onwuasor (knee), Josh Adams (hamstring) and John Franklin Myers (groin) were all forced to leave practice early. Onwuasor hurt himself chasing down TE Ross Travis. He was able to walk off the field under his own power.

Denzel Mims (hamstring), Pierre Desir (hamstring), Brian Poole (dehydration), James Burgess (back) and Jabari Zuniga (quad) were all held out of practice again. The Jets are hoping Mims can start individual drills in the coming days. Meanwhile, the Jets are not rushing Poole back, as he is still dealing with dehydration issues. He had a similar problem last summer as well.

Avery Williamson (knee), Ryan Griffin (ankle) and Daniel Brown (NFI list) were all activated and participated in individual drills for the first time this training camp.
