Saints open a spot on their practice squad for Jason Pierre-Paul

The Saints opened a spot on their practice squad for Jason Pierre-Paul by releasing recently-signed defensive end Jordan Willis:

Jason Pierre-Paul’s turn with the New Orleans Saints will start on the practice squad. Already at capacity with 16 players under contract, the Saints opened a spot for him by releasing recently-acquired defensive end Jordan Willis; signed last week as a free agent, Willis was not activated for Week 10’s road game with the Minnesota Vikings.

Like Pierre-Paul, Willis was someone with experience in NFL games who could have helped out in the rotation while young draft picks like Isaiah Foskey and Payton Turner were on the mend. But the Saints believed Pierre-Paul had more to offer, and there’s no arguing with the benefits of greater pro experience. So they made a change.

But will Pierre-Paul get into games coming out of the bye week? Cameron Jordan and Carl Granderson have dominated snaps this season with Tanoh Kpassagnon rotating in behind them, and backup defensive end Kyle Phillips played just five snaps last week in Minnesota. They didn’t sign Pierre-Paul just for him to go through the motions in practice, so look for him to get some opportunities in obvious passing situations after the break.

Report: Saints sign former 49ers DE Jordan Willis to their practice squad

NOF reports the Saints are signing former 49ers defensive end Jordan Willis to their practice squad after an injury sidelined Isaiah Foskey:

This is interesting: the New Orleans Saints are signing defensive end Jordan Willis to their practice squad, as first reported by NewOrleans.Football’s Brooke Kirchhofer. This pickup comes after news that Saints rookie pass rusher Isaiah Foskey could miss a few weeks recovering from a strained quadriceps muscle.

Originally picked three slots ahead of Alex Anzalone in the 2017 NFL draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, Willis went on appear in 26 games with the San Francisco 49ers where he bagged 7.5 of his 10.5 career sacks. He’s listed at 6-foot-4 and 270 pounds, falling right in line with the prototype the Saints value at defensive end.

Will he see many snaps in Sunday’s game with the Minnesota Vikings? That’s unlikely. The Saints have given the lion’s share of reps to Cameron Jordan (487) and Carl Granderson (459) through the first nine games, with Tanoh Kpassagnon (196) backing them up and Foskey (69) only getting into games in a reserve role. Veteran backup Kyle Phillips has been a healthy scratch after being promoted from the practice squad after an injury sidelined Payton Turner in the season opener. A corresponding move to Willis signing has not been announced, but the Saints also have preseason standout Niko Lalos on their practice squad.

Raiders re-sign veteran DE Jordan Willis to practice squad

Jordan Willis is back with the Raiders

At least from my perspective, the Raiders cutting Jordan Willis after training camp was a bit of a surprise. The veteran former 49ers edge rusher signed on in Las Vegas this offseason and had a decent camp and preseason. But ultimately he was among the team’s cuts to get down to 53 players.

While ultimately he may make his way back to the Raiders’ regular season roster, the team got one step closer to that possibility today by adding him to their practice squad.

With Chandler Jones having some off-field personal issues that had him miss the season opener and his future with the team uncertain, the Raiders activated DE Isaac Rochell from the practice squad on Sunday for depth purposes.

It seems very possible Willis would be a strong candidate to be called up to replace him in Buffalo in week two. And should the team make an official roster move regarding Jones, Willis could find his way onto the regular season roster after all.

7 recently cut or waived players Raiders should consider adding

Still some talent out there to be had from roster cuts. Here are 7 of them the Raiders should consider adding.

There are always a few players that teams cut who instantly stun a lot of people. Many of those players are talented enough or fit another team’s need so well, that they are scooped up quickly or claimed off waivers. But not all of them.

Some players still slip through and either remain unsigned or join a team’s practice squad.

Either way, what many refer to as the “final 53-man roster” is anything but final. A better term is “initial 53” because more moves inevitably occur afterward.

Sometimes those moves are a team seeing a player or players become available that they like better than those they kept initially. Other moves include injured players who the team expects to have back in short order, but in order to be added to the IR Designated for Return list, those players must be on the roster after the initial cuts are made.

Now that the dust has settled from the cuts, signings, and claims, I have compiled a list of those players still out there who the Raiders should consider adding this week as they prepare for the season opener.

Ballers & Busters: Raiders preseason Week 1 vs 49ers

Your Ballers & Busters for Raiders preseason preseason opener

Sunday the Raiders took the field for the first time since the end of last season. And just as they did last preseason, there wasn’t much in the way of starters on the field.

Yeah, unlike years ago when the starters would at least play a series in the opener, these days they don’t see the field at all, making the preseason games all about the hopefuls proving themselves to try and earn a roster spot.

With that in mind, here are the standouts among those who took the field against the 49ers.

Ballers

QB Aidan O’Connell

The rookie balled out for three quarters. He completed 15 of 18 passes for 141 yards and a touchdown. And two of his three incompletions were drops. Very impressive first impression for the fourth round pick out of Purdue.

DE Jordan Willis, DE Isaac Rochell

The two of them shared a sack on third down to force the 49ers into a three-and-out to open the game. And then they were both forces on the outside the rest of their time on the field.

Willis had a pressure on the next drive that also resulted in a three-and-out and then Rochell had a pressure that helped lead to a sack on the 49ers third consecutive three-and-out to start the game.

Willis ended consecutive drives to end the first half. With a run stuff for no gain on 4th down and then a QB hit that resulted in a bad pass to send the two teams to the locker room with the Raiders holding a 14-7 lead.

The first 49ers possession of the third quarter had Rochell wreaking havoc on them. He got in the backfield to disrupt the play on a one yard run, then had two run stuffs for no gain.

TE Cole Fotheringham

Fotheringham was all over the place. First and foremost, he was the team’s leading receiver with 71 yards on five catches. Knowing that his best chance of making the roster will be with his special teams work, he had a tackle on a punt return as well. And for good measure, he had a couple of run blocks that led to good yardage too.

LB Curtis Bolton

The first tackle of the game was Bolton on the opening kickoff. Late in the third quarter, he came in at linebacker and made a impact there too. He laid the hit that forced the fumble for the Raiders’ first takeaway of the day. Then he ended Sam Darnold’s day with a couple blitzes that both led to incompletions and a 58-yard field goal attempt that missed wide right.

DT Neil Farrell Jr

With the score still tied at seven apiece late in the second quarter, the 49ers lined up to go for it on fourth and one. Jordan Willis would get the run stuff at the line, but it was Farrell who filled the gap to make it possible. Farrell was there again on fourth and one early in the third quarter to stuff Sam Darnold on his QB sneak attempt for another turnover on downs.

DT Adam Butler

On consecutive plays late in the first quarter, Butler got into the 49ers backfield. The first time, Trey Lance managed to escape, though he was only able to scramble for two yards. The next play Butler got pressure again, this time he wrapped up Lance for the sack. Butler later had a run stop as well.

S Roderic Teamer

As Roderic “Special” Teamer is want to do, he made a play as a gunner on special teams, stopping the return man for no gain at the 14-yard-line. He also had a couple assisted tackles in the pass game as well as the run game.

Honorable Mention

CB Sam Webb — Was in the right place when his receiver couldn’t get ahold of a pass and he picked it off and returned it to the two-yard-line.

RB Sincere McCormick — had two touchdowns in the game; one on the ground and one through, both from two yards out.

LB Amari Burney — Had a pursuit sack and made a great read on a pass over the middle to nearly pick it off.

49ers 2021 postseason hero signing with Raiders

A #49ers playoff legend is signing with the Raiders.

The hero of the 49ers’ 2021 divisional playoff win vs. Green Bay won’t be in red and gold next season. Defensive end Jordan Willis, who blocked the punt that led to San Francisco’s only touchdown in their 10-7 win over the Packers, will be signing with the Raiders according to ESPN’s Field Yates. Willis and Las Vegas agreed on a one-year contract per the Athletic’s Matt Barrows.

San Francisco traded for Willis during the 2020 season. He posted 2.5 sacks during that campaign, and then followed that up with a career-high 3.0 sacks in 2021. He capped the 2021 season with a key move that led to a Jimmie Ward field goal block against the Packers, and then later blocked a punt that Talanoa Hufanga picked up and returned for a touchdown.

Willis spent last season with the 49ers where he played in nine games because of a knee injury. He did have a pair of sacks and three tackles for loss.

In his career Willis has two starts in 69 games. He’s credited with 92 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 23 QB hits and 10.5 sacks.

Picking free agents 49ers should try to re-sign in 2023

Which of the #49ers’ 21 unrestricted free agents should they aim to re-sign? Nicholas McGee (@nicholasmcgee24) runs through the entire list:

It’s going to be a busy offseason for the 49ers, who on top of replenishing their coaching staff and thinking about the draft, have the futures of 21 unrestricted free agents to think about.

The roster turnover in the NFL is what makes a season-ending loss, which the 49ers suffered in last week’s NFC championship game, hit so hard.

No team is ever the same year over year, but the Niners will want to keep as much of their 2022 vintage as they can.

But San Francisco is projected to be just under $16.4 million below the projected 2023 salary cap, and will not have the financial means to keep everyone.

So which players should they be looking to keep around? We’ve gone through the list of 21 UFAs and identified whether San Francisco should aim to re-sign them to a new contract.

49ers to place DE Jordan Willis on IR, promote DE Kemoko Turay

The #49ers are making a quick swap on their defensive front with DE Jordan Willis headed to IR.

The 49ers are making a couple more roster moves. They’ll be placing defensive end Jordan Willis on IR and promoting DE Kemoko Turay from the practice squad per multiple 49ers beat writers.

Willis is having a cleanup procedure done on his knee after telling the training staff about some discomfort there Monday per the Athletic’s Matt Barrows. The veteran defensive end was originally let go by the team at final cuts, but re-signed after free safety Jimmie Ward was placed on IR. Willis was inactive for Sunday’s season opener in Chicago.

It was a small surprise Turay was left off the 53-man roster after putting together a good preseason. He signed to the practice squad the day after cuts though and now will hold a place on the active roster and add some defensive end depth for San Francisco.

49ers agree to bring back recently-released TE Tyler Kroft, DE Jordan Willis

The #49ers have agreements to bring back TE Tyler Kroft and DE Jordan Willis.

The 49ers on Tuesday announced their initial 53-man roster, but that group should change relatively quickly. Shortly after their final cuts were made, the club announced free safety Jimmie Ward and linebacker Curtis Robinson would go on short-term IR. Tight end Tyler Kroft and defensive end Jordan Willis both have agreements to return to the club after being released from the 80-man roster.

Ward is dealing with a hamstring injury, and Robinson suffered a high ankle sprain in the preseason finale vs. the Texans. Both players will be required to miss at least four games by going on IR.

Kroft and Willis were both on the roster bubble and wound up on the outside of the initial list.

They’ll wind up carrying four tight ends once Kroft is added to the roster. He adds perhaps more pass-catching ability than either Charlie Woerner or Ross Dwelley bring behind George Kittle.

Willis is a good rotational defensive end who can also contribute on special teams. His release was a surprise, but since he didn’t have to pass waivers the team knew they could get him back without risking another team claiming him. Willis will be the 10th defensive lineman.

49ers re-sign DE Jordan Willis

The #49ers are bringing back DE Jordan Willis who once made a pretty big play in a playoff game.

The 49ers are bringing back one of their playoff heroes. Defensive end Jordan Willis is back with San Francisco on a one-year contract the team announced Wednesday.

Willis was acquired by the 49ers via trade during the 2020 season. He posted 2.5 sacks in seven games and then returned for 2021 despite a suspension for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substance policy that cost him the first six games of the year.

In 10 games last season Willis put up a career-high 3.0 sacks. He made his way into 49ers lore with a pair of special teams plays that sparked the team’s divisional playoff win over the Packers. First he made a nice move to free Jimmie Ward to block a field goal at the end of the first half. Then he blocked a punt that was recovered for the 49ers’ only touchdown in a 13-10 win.
