Colts release DE Al-Quadin Muhammad, WR Vyncint Smith

The Colts released DE Al-Quadin Muhammad and WR Vyncint Smith.

The Indianapolis Colts released defensive end Al-Quadin Muhammad and wide receiver Vyncint Smith ahead of Tuesday’s deadline for roster cuts.

Muhammad likely wasn’t going to make the initial roster. The defensive end room was pretty crowded, and he didn’t do a whole lot to separate himself from the competition. Adam Schefter of ESPN first reported the roster move.

Smith had an outside chance to make the roster as the final wide receiver, but it appears that role belongs to Juwann Winfree. The Colts hope to bring Smith back to the practice squad. Joel A. Erickson of The Indianapolis Star was the first to report the roster move.

The Colts have until Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. ET to finalize their initial 53-man roster. You can stay up to date with the latest moves via our tracker.

Colts sign 12 players to futures contracts

The Colts signed 12 players to futures contracts.

The Indianapolis Colts signed 12 players to Reserve/Futures contracts, the team announced Monday.

As is typical protocol following the end of the regular season, the Colts will be preparing to expand their roster to 90 players for the offseason. Much of that includes signing players to futures contracts.

The expansion of the roster to 90 players doesn’t go into effect until the start of the new league year, which is March 15. That’s why it’s technically a reserve contract. This is essentially stating the player will be on the 90-man roster when the time comes.

There is no limit to how many futures contracts the Colts have as long as they are within the 90-man limit when the new league year rolls around.

Here’s a look at the 12 players signed to futures contracts to begin the offseason:

Broncos signing WR Vyncint Smith to practice squad

Vyncint Smith has caught 23 passes for 329 yards and one touchdown through four season in the NFL.

The Denver Broncos are signing 26-year-old wide receiver Vyncint Smith to their practice squad, the player’s agent announced Monday on Twitter.

Smith (6-3, 202 pounds) is a German-born receiver who went undrafted in 2018 after playing college football at Limestone, a DII school. He signed with the Houston Texans as a college free agent and caught five passes for 91 yards and one touchdown in seven games (one start) as a rookie.

Houston demoted Smith to the practice squad in 2019 and the New York Jets later signed him off the Texans’ practice squad to their own active roster. In New York, Smith caught 18 passes for 238 yards in three seasons (22 games).

After his contract expired with the Jets, Smith joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers earlier this year, but he failed to make the Bucs’ 53-man roster this summer. Smith will now be joining his fourth NFL team in Denver.

With Smith’s arrival, the Broncos’ 16-player practice squad is now full.

Colts worked out trio of WRs

The Colts worked out a trio of WRs on Tuesday.

The Indianapolis Colts worked out a trio of wide receivers, according to the league’s transaction wire Tuesday.

The three included in the workout were Vyncint Smith, Chris Rowland and Tyshaun James.

The Colts are likely keeping an eye on the market and with the massive roster cuts right around the corner, the front office has a lot of decisions to make when it comes to trimming the group down to 53 players.

The wide receiver room, specifically, has a number of players vying for the final one or two spots in the room. Though it is currently being led by Mike Strachan and Dezmon Patmon, there are a few options the Colts might consider.

2021 New York Jets 16-man practice squad tracker

The Jets have begun to build their 16-man practice squad. Keep up with the moves here:

The Jets have begun to build their 16-man practice squad.

The NFL is keeping some practice squad rules from 2020, including…

  1. Up to six practice squad players can have more than two accrued seasons.
  2. Teams can protect up to four practice squad players per week.
  3. Two practice squad players can be elevated to the active roster on game days.

You can keep track of the Jets’ practice squad additions below. We’ll be updating this list as such moves are reported and announced.

7 Jets in need of a big game against the Eagles

Position battles will rage on in the Jets’ preseason finale against the Eagles.

Preseason play is deemed mostly insignificant for players locked into roster spots. Other than taking some repetitions against competition as a tune-up, preseason games are no more than a formality before the beginning of the regular season for starters and key reserves.

The same cannot be said for players squarely on the roster bubble. In fact, the preseason is the most important time of the year for any player fighting to make a team. The Jets’ starters will play a half at the most and go through the motions in their preseason finale against the Eagles, but it becomes survival of the fittest once the reserves enter.

Here are seven Jets who are looking to make the most of their playing time against the Eagles to either get back to top form, help their standing on the depth chart, or do enough to improve their chances of avoiding the ax before cutdown day, which is just around the corner.

The 6 hardest cuts from Jets Wire’s preseason Week 2 roster prediction

After releasing a 53-man roster prediction following Week 2 of the preseason, we at Jets Wire explained our toughest cuts.

Training camp and the preseason is the time for players to establish themselves as contributors and lock down roster spots.

It is also the place where NFL dreams sometimes go to die.

The Jets can only carry 53 players once the beginning of the regular season arrives — a far cry from the number they currently have in the building with training camp nearing its end. New York would likely prefer to keep more than 53 players around considering the talent it has at One Jets Drive, but that is not how things work in professional football.

Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh are going to have some excruciating decisions to make at the end of August. Which players did just enough to make the 53-man squad? Which players fell just short and will now have to seek a new opportunity elsewhere? Those questions will be answered after countless hours of watching film and deliberating.

We at Jets Wire took a crack at projecting the 53-man roster after Saturday’s preseason Week 2 action against the Packers. All of the cuts predicted in that piece can be seen directly below, followed by explanations for the toughest severances.

  • QB: Josh Johnson, James Morgan
  • RB: Josh Adams, Austin Walter
  • WR: Manasseh Bailey, Lawrence Cager, Josh Malone, D.J. Montgomery, Jeff Smith, Vyncint Smith
  • TE: Daniel Brown, Kenny Yeboah
  • OL: Grant Hermanns, Tristen Hoge, Corey Levin, David Moore, Jimmy Murray
  • DL: Ronald Blair, Michael Dwumfour, Kyle Phillips, Tanzel Smart
  • LB: Noah Dawkins, Camilo Eifler, Del’Shawn Phillips, Edmond Robinson, Brendon White
  • CB: Corey Ballentine, Elijah Campbell, Lamar Jackson
  • S: Bennett Jackson, J.T. Hassell

Jets position battles: Who has the edge after Gang Green’s preseason opener?

Week 1 of the preseason provided a closer look at some of the Jets’ key position battles.

The Jets started the Robert Saleh era with a win over the Giants in their preseason opener, but the long-lasting impact of Saturday night’s action will go far beyond the final score.

New York’s first action of the preseason provided a glimpse at the many ongoing position battles at One Jets Drive. With numerous spots up for grabs on both sides of the ball, Gang Green’s matchup with the Giants told the story of which players are currently winning those fights and which players have some ground to make up if they want to secure a place on the 53-man roster or a higher spot on the depth chart.

Here is the latest on the Jets’ position battles after their preseason debut.

Zach Wilson’s solid debut among 8 takeaways from Jets’ preseason opener

Takeaways from the Jets’ preseason-opening win over the Giants.

The Jets kicked off the Robert Saleh era in fitting fashion, putting together a stout defensive performance in a narrow 12-7 preseason-opening win over the Giants.

Saleh and Jeff Ulbrich’s defense stymied the Giants’ reserves Saturday night, while Gang Green’s first-team offense showed signs of life with Zach Wilson leading the charge for two drives early in the game. Wilson did not lead the Jets to anything more than a field goal, but he showcased some impressive traits in his brief professional debut.

Between Wilson’s performance and players helping their chances of making the Jets’ 53-man roster, there is plenty to digest from Saleh’s head coaching debut. With that being said, here are eight takeaways from New York’s first victory of the preseason.

Jets re-sign WR Vyncint Smith ahead of free agency

The Jets have re-signed wide receiver Vyncint Smith to a one-year deal ahead of the beginning of free agency.

The Jets got a head start on bolstering their wide receiver depth ahead of free agency on Saturday, re-signing Vyncint Smith to a one-year deal.

Smith, who was set to become a restricted free agent on March 17, played in just seven games for the Jets last season, catching one pass for 13 yards to go along with 45 snaps on special teams. The 24-year-old missed New York’s first five games after suffering a core injury that required surgery in training camp and landed him on injured reserve.

Smith originally signed with the Texans as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and signed with the Jets in Sept. 2019. He made an instant impact in his first season with New York, catching 17 passes for 225 yards in addition to three carries for 52 yards and a touchdown. Smith has also returned kicks in his two seasons with the Jets, averaging 26.8 yards per return.

With Smith back in the fold, New York’s wide receiver depth chart currently consists of Manasseh Bailey, Braxton Berrios, Lawrence Cager, Jamison Crowder, Josh Malone, Denzel Mims, D.J. Montgomery, Breshad Perriman, Jaleel Scott and Jeff Smith. Perriman and Jeff Smith are both set to hit free agency next week.

More additions to the Jets’ wide receiver room are expected before free agency wraps up, as the position is a priority area of need for Joe Douglas to address.
