Presenting the Detroit Lions practice squad as of Week 6

Breaking down which players are on the Detroit Lions practice squad as of Week 6

The NFL’s Week 6 schedule sees the Detroit Lions idle on a bye week. The Sunday off came at an opportune time for coach Dan Campbell’s banged-up Lions team.

Even during the bye, the Lions have still tinkered with the roster. The ever-changing practice squad has seen a couple of new additions. It can be hard to keep track of just who is on Detroit’s practice squad, so here is the current iteration as Friday, October 14th.

Lions sign K Sam Ficken to the practice squad

Ficken joins the Lions during the bye week after the team did not try a FG in Week 5

When the Detroit Lions return to the field after the Week 6 bye, there will be a new kicker in Allen Park. The Lions signed free agent Sam Ficken to the practice squad on Tuesday.

Ficken was one of several kickers the team worked out prior to Week 3, but he has remained unsigned. The 29-year-old Ficken has bounced around the NFL since 2016; Detroit is the eighth team Ficken has signed a contract with since leaving Penn State.

For his career, Ficken has converted 35 of his 49 FG attempts with a long of 54.

Jaguars reportedly bring in a pair of kickers for tryouts

Riley Patterson has been consistent since joining the Jaguars, but the team is reportedly looking at kickers anyway.

Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Riley Patterson missed a 37-yard field in Week 1, but has made six consecutive field goals and seven extra points since.

Despite the strong start to the year for Patterson, the Jaguars are reportedly evaluating their options at kicker anyway. According to ESPN’s Field Yates, the Jaguars brought in former Indianapolis Colts kicker Rodrigo Blankenship and former New York Jets kicker Sam Ficken for tryouts Tuesday.

While Patterson’s play hasn’t necessitated a replacement, it’s possible the Jaguars are hunting for an upgrade to their practice squad where undrafted rookie kicker James McCourt currently holds a spot.

Jacksonville claimed McCourt off waivers from the Los Angeles Chargers in August and claimed Patterson from the Detroit Lions a week later.

Blankenship, 25, spent the last two seasons with the Colts, but missed most of the 2021 season due to a hip injury. He was released by the team after missing a 42-yard field goal in overtime of a Week 1 tie with the Houston Texans, although he made two field goals and two extra points prior to the miss.

Ficken, 29, spent training camp with the Jaguars in 2016 and eventually had a stint as the Los Angeles Rams’ kicker in 2017 and 2018. He later stuck with the Jets, making 32 of 42 field goal attempts over a two-year span with the team. Ficken spent last season on the Titans injured reserve after injuring his groin ahead of the Week 1 opener.

Every Penn State player on an NFL playoff roster in 2022

Here is every former Penn State player on an NFL playoff team’s roster in 2022

The NFL playoffs are just about set and Penn State will once again be well-represented across the league with hopes of seeing another Nittany Lion or two lay claim to a Super Bowl ring at the end of the season. And in case you forgot, a Penn State player has played in every Super Bowl (except for five since 1967)…

As the NFL playoff picture comes into view, here is a look at what Penn State players are gearing up for the postseason with Super Bowl 56 on the horizon.

The only confirmed playoff teams without a Penn State player on the roster are the Kansas City Chiefs, Cincinnati Bengals, and New England Patriots. There are still a couple of spots in the AFC and NFC playoff picture to lock down, so this will be updated once the final playoff teams are confirmed.

Vrabel talks ‘the plan’ at kicker, but it looks like Titans never had one

The Titans don’t have a plan at kicker, and it seems they never had one ahead of 2021.

The Tennessee Titans are in a familiar place once again: they are looking for a new kicker after releasing Michael Badgley, who missed one field goal and an extra point during the Week 1 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

At the moment, the Titans have a blank space at the kicker position on their updated depth chart. On the bright side, at least the blank space has never missed a field goal.

The only kicker on the team is veteran Randy Bullock, who was signed to the practice squad late last week.

While one would assume Bullock is the next in line to try his hand at the position for Tennessee, head coach Mike Vrabel says the team will give others a look before making a final decision, per David Boclair of SI.

ā€œ[We will] determine who we feel like will make them,ā€ Vrabel said. “ā€¦ Weā€™ll take a look at some guys working out. (Bullock) is on the practice squad. Find somebody that we thinkā€™s going to make them and protect for him. Thatā€™s the plan.ā€

Vrabel can call that a plan all he wants, but in reality the Titans don’t have one ā€” and it seems they never had one to begin with, which is unfathomable for a team that has had the worst field goal unit in the NFL the past two seasons and has seen 12 kickers come and go since 2019.

(We took a trip down memory lane and went over all of them in a separate article. If you can stomach it, you can check that out right here.)

The plan should have been to make kicker among the team’s top priorities in free agency, and it’s something we were screaming about all offseason long.

For whatever reason, Stephen Gostkowski hasn’t been brought back. He remains unsigned, and there’s no indication he’s retiring, so it’s anyone’s guess what’s going on there.

Granted, Gostkowski had his own struggles in the first half of last year, but he righted the ship in the second half and was nearly automatic from 50-plus.

Without Gostkowski, the Titans’ master plan for 2021 involved having a training camp competition between a pair of inexperienced kickers, both of whom were former UDFAs in Tucker McCann and rookie Blake Haubeil.

Haubeil flamed out quickly and was cut, opening the door for Sam Ficken, who was signed off the scrap heap and ultimately won the job over McCann, who suffered an injury during the preseason to make Ficken’s life easier.

To his credit, Ficken looked good during the preseason and did earn the job, but he suffered an injury himself in the days leading up to Week 1, which led to the Badgley experiment that failed miserably.

To be somewhat fair, it’s hard to account for a late injury like that and find a suitable replacement on such short notice.

However, it’s not like Ficken was this top-notch, established kicker when he arrived. As we already mentioned, he was on the scrap heap after being waived by the New York Jets of all teams.

Even if Ficken does come back after his IR stint, he’s far from a guarantee, as his career success rate of 72.9 percent doesn’t exactly inspire confidence that he can fix this mess.

Had the Titans done more to address the position with a more established option this offseason, and that established option got hurt like Ficken did, we’d be much more understanding.

But that didn’t happen, so we’re not understanding.

Vrabel and general manager Jon Robinson have a mess on their hands and they have nobody to blame but themselves after neglecting the position. It didn’t happen in Week 1 because the Titans got blown out, but it’s only a matter of time before the team’s shaky situation at kicker wrecks a game.

Titans place Sam Ficken on IR among handful of moves

The Titans are having issues at kicker before the season even begins.

The Tennessee Titans’ problems at kicker are starting before the regular season even begins, as the team announced it placed starting kicker Sam Ficken on Injured Reserve ahead of Week 1.

Ficken came down with a groin injury late in the week, which put his status for Week 1 up in the air. Now, he’ll miss at least the first three games of the 2021 campaign.

Taking Ficken’s spot on the roster is fellow kicker Michael Badgley, who was signed to the practice squad on Friday.

Badgley spent the last three seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers and made 80 percent of his field goal attempts in that span. However, he struggled in 2020, making just 72.7 percent of his kicks.

In addition to promoting Badgley, the Titans signed veteran kicker Randy Bullock to the practice squad. Bullock made 80.8 percent of his attempts in 12 games for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2020.

Among other moves: the Titans will elevate tight end MyCole Pruitt and safety Bradley McDougald from the practice squad for Week 1. Tight end Tommy Hudson has also been ruled out for Sunday.

Titans vs. Cardinals final injury report ahead of Week 1

The Titans have one player ruled out ahead of Week 1.

The Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals released their final injury report ahead of the Week 1 contest at Nissan Stadium in Nashville on Sunday.

Earlier in the week, there were some concern about wide receiver A.J. Brown, who was absent on Wednesday and listed with a knee issue.

However, Brown fully participated in practice on Thursday and Friday and enters the Week 1 tilt without a designation. Expect the Titans to continue managing his practice reps throughout the season.

Also, the Julio Jones hype train is on the tracks and ready to leave the station. After being limited for almost all of training camp, the veteran wide receiver is fully healthy and good to go for his Titans debut.

The biggest concern for the Titans right now is at kicker, where starter Sam Ficken was added to the injury report with a groin issue. Tennessee adding kicker Michael Badgley to the practice squad is an ominous sign.

The Titans have one player already ruled out in linebacker David Long, and four others are listed as questionable. Here’s a look at the full injury report for both teams ahead of Sunday.

Titans K Sam Ficken questionable in Week 1 vs. Cardinals

The Titans might have to use K Michael Badgley in Week 1 against the Cardinals, as Ficken suffered a groin injury on Friday.

The Tennessee Titans wrapped up their week of practice in preparation for their home opener in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals. They released their final injury report of the week it got a little worse than Thursday.

One player was ruled out and four are questionable, including kicker Sam Ficken.

Linebacker David Long was ruled out with a hamstring injury. He was limited in practice both on Wednesday and Thursday but was unable to practice on Friday.

Ficken was a new addition to the injury report on Friday. He suffered a right groin injury and was limited in practice Friday. They added kicker Michael Badgley to the practice squad Friday and could be elevated to the roster Saturday if Ficken is unable to go.

Tight end Tommy Hudson (toe), cornerback Chris Jackson (hamstring) and receiver Josh Reynolds (foot) are also questionable for the game.

Hudson was unable to practice Friday after being limited on Thursday, the first time he appeared on the injury report.

Jackson was limited all week. Reynolds was added to the injury report Thursday and was limited both Thursday and Friday.

Receiver A.J. Brown (knee) was a full participant for the second day in a row after sitting out Wednesday.

Ruled out:

  • LB David Long (hamstring)

Questionable:

  • K Sam Ficken (right groin)
  • CB Chris Jackson (hamstring)
  • TE Tommy Hudson (toe)
  • WR Josh Reynolds (foot)

Sam Ficken just kicked a 58-yard field goal for the Titans

Former Penn State kicker Sam Ficken is making his case to the Titans to be on the roster this fall

Former Penn State kicker Sam Ficken continues to impress with his skill in the NFL. At least, in the NFL preseason. On Saturday night, Ficken successfully kicked one of the longest field goals you may see in the preseason.

With the Tennessee Titans, Ficken kicked a 58-yard field goal against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with room to spare.

Earlier in the preseason game, Ficken kicked another field goal from 48 yards out. Ficken’s strong showing ith the Titans this preseason has been one to celebrate as he looks to secure a job with the Titans with the NFL season approaching.

Ficken is on his seventh NFL roster since leaving Penn State in 2016. He has made previous stops with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Kansas City Chiefs, Los Angels Rams, Seattle Seahawks, Green Bay Packers and New York Jets.
