Eagles officially announce 7 roster moves ahead of 53-man deadline

Philadelphia #Eagles officially announce 7 roster moves ahead of 53-man deadline

Roster cuts are officially underway, as NFL teams will begin the process of trimming the roster from 90 to 53 players.

Unlike last year, there is just one cutdown date, following the final week of the preseason, on
Aug. 29.

After several reported roster moves on Saturday, Philadelphia announced seven moves on Sunday morning.

Eagles to release three offensive linemen ahead of 53-man roster deadline

The Philadelphia #Eagles are releasing Dennis Kelly, and Josh Andrews, while waiving Brett Toth ahead of Tuesday’s 53-man roster deadline

The Eagles appear set to roll with Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Jason Kelce, Cam Jurgens, Lane Johnson, Tyler Steen, Fred Johnson, Jack Driscoll and potentially Josh Sills.

After parting ways with Tyrese Robinson, Jeff McLane is reporting that the Philadelphia has released Dennis Kelly, and Josh Andrews, while waiving Brett Toth.

The Philadelphia Eagles are just hours from hosting an open practice at Lincoln Financial Field, and the team announced three roster moves.

The Philadelphia Eagles are just hours from hosting an open practice at Lincoln Financial Field, and the team announced three roster moves.

Philadelphia confirmed the signing of Josh Andrews, reuniting the offensive guard with the team that initially signed him after the NFL draft.

In a shocking move, the team released linebacker Davion Taylor and waived wide receiver, Charleston Rambo.

Eagles add backup Saints OL Josh Andrews, per his agent

The Eagles are signing former Saints backup Josh Andrews, a 10-year veteran with experience at both guard and center. He’s the 7th ex-Saint on their roster:

There aren’t many teams around the NFL with more former New Orleans Saints players on their roster than the Philadelphia Eagles, and they’ve just added another one. Josh Andrews has agreed to terms with Philadelphia and will soon sign with them, per his agent Brett Tessler.

Andrews appeared in several games for the Saints last year as a backup at both guard and center, but the team chose to not bring him back for 2023. They’ve dealt with a series of injuries at his position group in recent weeks but still chose to add other players, which says something about their internal evaluation of him.

Either way, good luck to Andrews in Philly. Here’s the full list of former Saints players on the Eagles’ depth chart at training camp:

Eagles to sign veteran offensive lineman Josh Andrews

The Philadelphia Eagles are signing veteran offensive lineman Josh Andrews according to his agent Brett Tessler

The Eagles are always looking for offensive line depth, and Brett Toth’s struggles could be an advantage for Josh Andrews.

According to agent Brett Tessler, Andrews is signing to the Eagles’ 90-man roster.

A ten-year veteran of the NFL, Andrews spent his first four seasons with the Eagles and faced his former team last year as a member of the Saints.

Andrews has also spent time with the Vikings, Colts, and Falcons.

8 Saints practice squad players not brought back for 2023

Wide receiver Kevin White is among 8 New Orleans Saints practice squad players who weren’t brought back for 2023 on a reserve/future contract:

The New Orleans Saints retained half of their 16-man practice squad and added a couple of new players on reserve/future contracts for the 2023 season, but the other half of their practice squad hasn’t been retained for the upcoming offseason. These reserve/future contracts are low-cost deals to help fill out the 90-man summer roster, so why wouldn’t the Saints bring back everyone possible if they were already in the building?

They could have any number of reasons — players could choose to pass on the offer and try their luck with other teams, they may be considering retirement, or the Saints could simply choose to go in a different direction. If the team’s plans change, those players could probably be brought back easily enough on a standard contract. At the end of day, those reasons are their own, and these guys are now free agents who can try out and sign with whoever they please. So who wasn’t brought back from 2022? Let’s explore:

Saints 55-man roster vs. Browns: Trio of practice squad players up for Week 16’s game

Saints 55-man roster vs. Browns: Trio of practice squad players brought up for Week 16’s game after losing WR Jarvis Landry, RG Cesar Ruiz

The Mew Orleans Saints filed a series of last-minute roster moves ahead of Saturday’s kickoff with the Cleveland Browns, signing wide receiver Kirk Merritt to their active roster from the practice squad, replacing veteran slot receiver Jarvis Landry after he went to injured reserve, while also bringing up wide receiver Keith Kirkwood and backup offensive lineman Josh Andrews as single-game elevations (meaning they’ll both revert to the practice squad after this game).

It makes sense to reload on receivers after losing Landry to injured reserve and ruling out Chris Olave with a hamstring issue that kept him out of practice all week. Merritt and Kirkwood should both have roles to play behind Rashid Shaheed, Marquez Callaway, and Tre’Quan Smith, but don’t look for many passes from Andy Dalton with the Saints and Browns playing during hazardous winter conditions. With wind and snow in the forecast, each squad should lean on its run game rather than look to throw all over the yard. That helps explain Andrews’ elevation as a backup center and guard, but it’s also worth noting the Saints lost right guard Cesar Ruiz to a Lisfranc injury this week and left guard Andrus Peat is questionable to play due to an illness.

So while some players will be healthy inactives this week, the Saints are going to again be without some key contributors due to injuries and illnesses. That includes standout rookie receiver Chris Olave and breakout linebacker Pete Werner, both managing hamstring injuries, and it’s unclear whether star cornerback Marshon Lattimore (abdomen) will be able to play this week. Here’s this week’s Saints roster:

Saints send Mark Ingram II to injured reserve, designate multiple others to return

The Saints sent Mark Ingram II to injured reserve while designating multiple others to return, including starting center Erik McCoy. Catch up on the latest roster moves:

The New Orleans Saints filed a series of roster moves on Wednesday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire, shuffling a couple of players to and from the injured reserve list while restocking some depth on the 53-man roster and practice squad. Here’s what you need to know about each new arrival, departure, and injury situation:

Saints sign RB David Johnson to their 53-man roster, waive OL Josh Andrews

The Saints signed RB David Johnson to their 53-man roster in the wake of RB Mark Ingram II’s injury, also waiving OL Josh Andrews with C Erik McCoy on the mend:

We’ve come out of the New Orleans Saints bye week to find some minor shuffling on their 53-man roster, with veteran running back David Johnson signed from the Saints practice squad and offensive lineman Josh Andrews waived to make room. Both of these roster moves may be related to injuries for other players.

Backup running back Mark Ingram II is likely done for the year after suffering another knee injury in Week 13’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so Johnson is stepping into a bigger role in his absence. Ingram has missed time earlier this season with MCL issues, but this injury is more serious, and it’s unlikely he’ll recover in time to play again this season. Johnson has only logged two touches with the Saints this season: he lost 4 yards on his lone rushing attempt but gained 11 yards on a single reception.

As for Andrews: he initially started at center in Erik McCoy’s absence but was demoted in New Orleans’ last game. Cesar Ruiz moved to center (his college position) with his backup Calvin Throckmorton stepping into the right guard spot. McCoy should be eligible to return from injured reserve soon, though, so if the Saints expect McCoy back soon it makes sense to waive Andrews in hopes of him returning to their practice squad.

We’ll see more changes in the weeks ahead as the Saints finish out their season. Expect them to audition players in different roles to see who should be in the plans for 2023 and beyond. It’s a shame that this is what their 2022 campaign has been reduced to, but the Saints still need to make the most of it.
