12 free agents Giants could target based on coaching hires

These 12 free agents could become free agent targets of the New York Giants based on their offseason coaching and coordinator hires.

The New York Giants significantly overhauled their coaching staff this offseason, changing two of their three coordinators while also switching out a multitude of assistant coaches.

Because of those changes, the team will need to readjust their personnel by way of free agency and the 2024 NFL draft in an effort to match talent with the new schemes.

As a reminder, here are the notable coaching changes:

  • Defensive coordinator, Shane Bowen
  • Special teams coordinator, Michael Ghobrial
  • Running backs coach, Joel Thomas
  • Offensive line coach, Carmen Bricillo
  • Tight ends coach, Tim Kelly

These new arrivals create an interesting dynamic headed into free agency. They are intimately familiar with several of the available players and have developed trust with them over the years.

While that doesn’t necessarily mean any or all of them will be signed by the Giants, there is likely to be some crossover.

Here is a look at 12 impending free agents the Giants could target based on the above coaching changes/hires.

Top stars from Jets’ 30-28 Week 16 win over Commanders

Running through some of the top performers from the Jets’ 30-28 win on Christmas Eve over the Washington Commanders.

The Jets were up big, blew it then were up again when it mattered the most: at the end of the game. After holding 20-0 and 27-7 leads, the Jets let the Commanders back in the game, almost giving Washington a Christmas miracle. Instead, the Jets rallied late and Greg Zuerlein kicked a 54-yard to give New York a 30-28 win to move to 6-9 on the season.

Zuerlein is one star from this game but there were a few more. So in the Christmas spirit, we’ll highlight a few stars from Sunday to spread some holiday cheer before the Jets get right back to work to prepare for Thursday’s trip to Cleveland.

Jets part ways with safety Adrian Amos

The Jets moved on from safety Adrian Amos Saturday which should allow more playing time for Ashtyn Davis and Jarrick Bernard-Converse.

In a surprising move, the Jets released safety Adrian Amos. Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported it as a mutual parting.

Amos joined the Jets in April following Chuck Clark’s season-ending knee injury. He signed a one-year deal worth $1.75 million. Amos was initially expected to start alongside Jordan Whitehead but Tony Adams overtook Amos and won the starting job in training camp, relegating Amos to the No. 3 safety.

Amos’ release could allow for more playing time for Ashtyn Davis and rookie Jarrick Bernard-Converse in the season’s final six weeks. Davis has been a key special-teams player and Bernard-Converse, the Jets’ sixth-round pick in 2023, provides versatility in the secondary.

Amos recorded 23 tackles in 11 games, including three starts.

6 takeaways from Jets’ 23-20 loss to Chiefs in Week 4

Here are six takeaways from the Jets’ 23-20 loss to the Chiefs in Week 4.

The New York Jets hosted the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night Football in a game many expected to be an easy victory for the defending Super Bowl champions. While the Jets surprised many by playing the Chiefs close, they would lose the game 23-20.

With the loss to the Chiefs, the Jets are now 1-3 after defeating the Buffalo Bills in their season opener. The offense showed signs of life on Sunday night, only for both sides of the ball to make inopportune mistakes.

Following another heartbreaking loss for the Jets, here are our six immediate takeaways from the Week 4 matchup against the Chiefs.

Stock up, stock down for Jets following preseason game vs. Buccaneers

Which bubble players helped or hurt their case Saturday?

The Jets have now played three preseason games following Saturday’s meeting with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With final cuts just over a week away, a couple of players, especially those on the roster bubble, started making their final cases to be included on the 53-man roster. Following Saturday’s game, here are some players whose stocks went up and went down for the Jets.

Michael Carter has low-ankle sprain, considered day-to-day

Michael Carter has low-ankle sprain, considered day-to-day

The Jets received good news regarding the injury to running back Michael Carter, who left Sunday’s win over the Bears with a lower-body injury.

Head coach Robert Saleh said Monday that Carter only has a low-ankle sprain and is considered “day-to-day” and has a chance to play Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

Low-ankle sprains are obviously better than high-ankle sprains. Had that been the case, Carter would likely have been out for at least a month.

The Jets were able to see Sunday that they have running backs that can hold the fort while Carter is out. Ty Johnson and Zonovan Knight combined for 131 rushing yards on 19 attempts helping lead the Jets to a 31-10 win over the Chicago Bears.

Other injury updates from Monday include linebacker Chazz Surratt (hamstring), Ashtyn Davis (hamstring) and Cedric Ogbuehi (groin) all being questionable for the week and day-to-day, similar to Carter.

The Jets will have more information on all these players Wednesday.

Did Browns RB Nick Chubb’s third touchdown run doom his own team?

Nick Chubb was his usual awesome self against the New York Jets. But his eagerness to score may have doomed his team to an improbable loss.

Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb is one of the best in the NFL at what he does, so it wasn’t too surprising that Chubb ran 17 times for 87 yards and three touchdowns against the New York Jets on Sunday. Chubb’s third touchdown, a 12-yard run with 1:55 left in the game, seemed to put things away, as the Browns went up, 30-17.

But as they say, not so fast. On the drive following that touchdown, Joe Flacco hit receiver Corey Davis for this huge touchdown out of some seriously busted coverage with 1:22 remaining…

The Jets then recovered their onside kick, giving them one opportunity to pull off an improbable comeback. And it actually happened! With 25 seconds left in the game, Flacco his rookie receiver Garrett Wilson for this 15-yard game-winner. The Jets pulled one out with an amazing 31-30 final.

And then, with 12 seconds left, safety Ashtyn Davis picked off Browns quarterback Jacoby Brissett to seal the deal.

We’re not here to blame Chubb for it all, as there was a rather long and improbable series of events, and the Browns’ defense just imploded down the stretch. Chubb is one of the NFL’s most determined runners, so unless his coaches told him to fall short of the goal line, he wasn’t likely to do it.

But the facts remain. Had the Browns gone with a more cautious approach, it’s entirely likely that they would have won the game.

6 Jets gearing up for make-or-break summers

These 6 Jets need to be at their best this summer:

The Jets mostly know who their starters will be in 2022.

But there are several players fighting for jobs — and in some cases, roster spots — this summer. How they practice could determine their future with the team. Some of these players are coming off bad seasons or failed to make an impression on the new coaching staff. Others come with major question marks heading into the season.

Let’s take a look at six Jets facing make-or-break summers.

10 non-impending free agents who may have played their last game with Jets

Whether it be to save money or get rid of an unproductive player, the Jets might part ways with these 10 non-impending free agents:

The Jets’ season is over and there is a good chance that many of the players that took part in their season finale against the Bills are not back with the team next season.

New York has nearly 30 players set to hit the open market. Some will be retained, while Joe Douglas won’t bother to keep others around. There are also plenty of players who are not impending free agents who may have already played their last games with the Jets — for one reason or another.

Here’s a look at 10 notable names whose time with New York might come to a premature end this offseason even though they’re not impending free agents.

6 takeaways from the Jets’ Week 15 loss to the Dolphins

The Jets jumped out to a 10-0 lead over the Dolphins, but didn’t do enough to parlay that into a Week 15 win. Takeaways from the action:

The Jets seemed poised to avoid a season sweep at the hands of the Dolphins, jumping out to an early 10-0 lead and dominating in every facet of the game.

Then Miami kicked it into gear and bounced back for a 31-24 win. Brandin Echols knotted things up at 24 with a pick-six midway through the fourth quarter, but the Dolphins got back in the end zone on their next drive and Zach Wilson didn’t have enough time in the pocket to get anything going.

Here are six takeaways from Gang Green’s third straight loss.
