Javelin Guidry suffers knee injury, is released to make room for Dalvin Cook

The season is likely over for Javelin Guidry.

Jets cornerback Javelin Guidry suffered a knee injury during Wednesday’s joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is expected to undergo surgery, per a report by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo. Guidry is likely heading to injured reserve, which will end his season unless the Jets release him with an injury settlement. He’ll have to clear waivers first, which he likely will.

Guidry joined the Jets this offseason when he was claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons in May. He spent time last season with the Falcons, Philadelphia Eagles, Las Vegas Raiders and Arizona Cardinals.

Guidry was having a solid preseason and could have been making a case to stick on the practice squad at least. If he does land on IR, the Jets could release him within five days with an injury settlement and he could join another team. If he is released with an injury settlement, he wouldn’t be able to return to the Jets until the number of weeks agreed to in the settlement, plus three additional weeks, have passed.

Guidry originally came into the league with the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Utah in 2020.

Update: Guidry was waived with an injury designation as the corresponding move to the Jets signing running back Dalvin Cook. He will revert to the Jets’ injured reserve if he clears waivers.

Raiders claim CB Javelin Guidry off waivers from Cardinals

Former Jets, Cardinals CB Javelin Guidry claimed by Raiders

Let the gamesmanship begin! Today the Raiders claimed Javelin Guidry off waivers from the Cardinals according to his agent. Probably not coincidentally, the Raiders play the Cardinals next Sunday. Which means they add someone to the roster who may have some insight into their next opponent.

Guidry joined the Cardinals on August 31 after he had been waived by the Jets. So, it’s just a couple weeks he spent in Arizona, but every bit of intel can only help.

Despite the former Utah Ute ran a 4.29 40-yard dash at the 2020 combine, he went undrafted and was signed by the Jets. He made the regular season roster, appearing in 11 games with two starts that season and returned last season to appear in all 17 games, starting three. He has three pass breakups and four forced fumbles in his two NFL seasons.

Guidry is the second cornerback to be added to the roster Monday. The team also added Nickell Roby-Coleman. We should soon see what the corresponding roster moves are for these additions.

One of the moves figures to be sending Anthony Averett to injured reserve with a reported broken thumb.

Cardinals claim CB Javelin Guidry off waivers

They add another cornerback but release rookie Christian Matthew after he initially made the team.

A day after trading for a new cornerback on roster cutdown day, the Arizona Cardinals have added another. They were awarded a waiver claim on former New York Jets cornerback Javelin Guidry, according to the NFL transaction report for waiver claims.

Guidry played for the Jets for two seasons after signing with them as an undrafted rookie out of Utah in 2020.

He split time between the practice squad and the active roster in 2020, appearing in 11 games, starting twice. In 2021, he played in all 17 regular-season games, starting three of them.

In 2020, he forced four fumbles to go with 22 total tackles. Last season, he had 33 tackles and three pass breakups.

He is 5-9 and 191 lb and is extremely fast. He clocked a 4.29-second 40 coming out of college.

He adds depth to the cornerback room.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, to make room for Guidry, the Cardinals released rookie cornerback Christian Matthew, one of their seventh-round draft picks this year. He initially made the roster after a solid preseason and is a candidate to be signed to the practice squad if he goes unclaimed off waivers on Thursday.

Jets release backup nickel Javelin Guidry

The Jets release a backup nickel who appeared in all 17 games last season.

The Jets released nickel back Javelin Guidry, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The move comes as a minor surprise, as Guidry played in all 17 games and started three.

Guidry recorded 48 tackles in 2021 to go along with three passes defended. He totaled 70 tackles in 28 games over two seasons with the Jets. He signed as an undrafted free agent out of Utah in 2020.

Guidry simply became the victim of the numbers game at the cornerback position. Michael Carter II took over as the starting nickel and D.J. Reed, Sauce Gardner, Bryce Hall and Brandin Eichols are entrenched on the outside, leaving Guidry on the outside looking in.

There’s a very good chance he will get claimed by another team on the waiver wire. Guidry can provide depth at corner and help on special teams.

Jets exercise exclusive rights options for 3 players

The Jets exercised exclusive rights options on CB Javelin Guidry, DE Tim Ward and WR Jeff Smith.

The Jets have exercised exclusive rights options on DE Tim Ward, WR Jeff Smith and CB Javelin Guidry, according to the New York Post’s Brian Costello.

The Jets also exercised S Elijah Riley’s exclusive rights option earlier this offseason.

Guidry played in all 17 games for the Jets in 2021, including three starts. He combined for 48 tackles and three defended passes over 486 snaps. Ward played in 11 games for the Jets and tallied 12 tackles over 191 snaps. Smith caught eight receptions for 131 yards in 12 games, including three starts at the end of the 2021 season.

Robert Saleh excited about slot cornerbacks Michael Carter II and Javelin Guidry

Robert Saleh loves Javelin Guidry and Michael Carter II, the Jets’ two young cornerbacks battling for the nickel role on defense.

The Jets are rolling with their youth in the slot in 2021.

New York let veteran nickel cornerback Brian Poole walk in free agency, opting to replace him with 2020 undrafted free agent Javelin Guidry and 2021 fifth-round pick Michael Carter II. While that duo’s inexperience may seem concerning, Robert Saleh is looking forward to playing both this season after watching them develop this spring and summer.

“We’re really excited about the slot corner,” Saleh said after Friday night’s tie against the Eagles. “When you look at Michael and Guidry, we think they’re two NFL starters with the potential to be even more with their youth. They got a chance to grow into that position.”

Both players come with their own set of strengths that Saleh praised. For Guidry, it’s all about his speed. He ran the fastest 40-yard dash at the 2020 NFL draft combine at 4.29 seconds and looked solid in two starts as a rookie. Carter II appears to be incredibly mature for his age; Saleh praised his smarts and communication skills.

Carter II looked good in coverage in the Jets’ final two preseason games.

“We’re very excited about those two,” Saleh said. “Those are definite starters in this league and they just add to the value of that position.”

Only one will win the starting job, though, and it’s unclear who leads the pack. Guidry will likely get the nod considering his experience and quickness, but it wouldn’t be shocking to see Carter II earn the job at some point this season or for Jeff Ulbrich to cycle the two throughout the year.

Either way, Saleh appears content with his slot cornerbacks – even if they aren’t household names just yet.
