Former Tennessee Titans linebacker Avery Williamson is trying his hand as a high school linebackers coach.

According to Brandon Shields of The Jackson Post, Williamson will be taking the job at Jackson Christian in Tennessee.

“I really had no connection with Jackson Christian a few months ago, but things really worked out over the last couple of months to lead me to come here, and I’m pumped about it,” Williamson said of landing the job.

Williamson, who also played with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers during his seven-year career, admitted retirement got a little boring, which led to his interest in coaching.

“Honestly, [retirement] was nice, but it was also boring,” he said. “But I took that year to figure out my next move, and last fall was my first time that I can remember not playing football. I wasn’t even involved in football, and I knew I needed to figure out what I’m supposed to do next.”

After hosting a linebackers camp in Jackson back in May, head coach Darby Palmer contacted Williamson to gauge his interest in the job. After thinking about it, the the 31-year-old accepted.

“After the camp, Coach Ervin told me that it sounded like the coaching staff might be wanting to talk to me about coming to join them, and [Jackson Christian head coach Darby Palmer] reached out a few days later,” Williamson said.

Williamson is the latest former Titan to land a high school coaching job, as former safety Blaine Bishop recently accepted a role as the secondary coach at Independence High School.

Avery Williamson named linebackers coach at Jackson Christian School

Jackson Christian’s varsity team went 10-2 last season, including a 7-0 record playing at home.

Avery Williamson got his start in football as a star high school player at Milan (Tenn.). From there, he moved up to play for Kentucky at the college level, then got drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2014. For the next several years, he was one of the NFL’s most underrated off-ball linebackers.

While Williamson never made a Pro Bowl team, he played his position at a better-than-average level for a relatively long time in the NFL, where the average career only lasts three years.

After playing five seasons for the Titans, two and a half more with the New York Jets and a handful of games with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Williamson hung up his cleats at the end of the 2021 season. He ended his career in the pros with 607 tackles, 15.5 sacks, five forced fumbles, three recovered fumbles and four interceptions.

After retiring, Williamson became bored, as he admitted to The Jackson Post in a recent interview. However, it seems he’s found a way to fill the void. Williamson has been named the new linebackers coach at Jackson Christian School in Tennessee.

Williamson says his Eagles team has a lot of potential, per Brandon Shields at the Post:

“First off, this is a good team with a lot of talent and potential… But working with the linebackers and talking with them about some of my experiences and techniques and then seeing them use what I tell them on the field in practice is a great feeling. So I’m enjoying coaching and glad to be with Jackson Christian.”

Jackson Christian’s varsity team went 10-2 last season, including a 7-0 record playing at home and outscored their opponents 500-268.

Ex-Titans LB Avery Williamson laughs at getting ‘fired’ on his day off

Avery Williamson’s second stint with the Titans didn’t last a month.

The Tennessee Titans made a flurry of moves on Tuesday in order to bolster their running backs room in the wake of running back Derrick Henry’s injury — and linebacker Avery Williamson was one of the casualties.

Tennessee made a grand total of five moves on its practice squad, two of which involved the signings of running backs Adrian Peterson and D’Onta Foreman.

However, the Titans had to make room on their 53-man roster, and did so by waiving Williamson, who had signed with the team about three weeks ago.

Williamson, who didn’t play a single defensive snap in his brief return to Nashville, took getting waived in stride.

It was a bit surprising that Williamson didn’t get a chance to play. After all, the Titans were dealing with multiple injuries at the position. In Week 8, the Titans decided to roll with rookie Monty Rice instead of Williamson when Rashaan Evans was ruled out.

Whatever the case may be, perhaps the Titans will re-add Williamson to the practice squad at some point. For now, his second stint in Nashville is over.

Titans add Peterson, Foreman to practice squad among several moves

The Titans also waived Avery Williamson from the active roster, and Mekhi Sargent from the practice squad.

The Tennessee Titans made a flurry of moves on their practice squad and active roster on the day after finding out that running back Derrick Henry would miss significant time with a foot injury.

After it was reported on Monday that the Titans would sign Adrian Peterson to the practice squad, the team made it official on Tuesday, while also announcing the signing of D’Onta Foreman to the practice squad.

In addition to those moves, the Titans waived linebacker Avery Williamson from the active roster, and running back Mekhi Sargent, defensive lineman Caraun Reid, and defensive lineman Eli Ankou from the practice squad.

Tennessee also added to the practice squad with the signings of defensive back Nate Brooks and defensive lineman Niles Scott.

Peterson is expected to lead the Titans’ backfield with Henry out, but Jeremy McNichols will also factor into the equation, and there’s a chance Foreman could get some looks, also.

The Titans will travel to Los Angeles to take on the Rams in Week 9. Before then, the NFL trade deadline will hit on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 3 p.m. CT.

Titans’ Mike Vrabel reacts to Ty Sambrailo retiring, Avery Williamson signing

Titans head coach Mike Vrabel says he was not caught off guard by Ty Sambrailo’s retirement.

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel touched on two hot topics for the team on Wednesday: the retirement of offensive lineman Ty Sambrailo and the signing of inside linebacker Avery Williamson.

Earlier in the day, Buck Reising of AtoZ Sports Nashville reported that Sambrailo’s retirement was a result of his being unhappy with the team, including with offensive line coach, Keith Carter.

While Vrabel didn’t address that particular part of it, he did say Sambrailo’s retirement wasn’t a surprise since he talked to the lineman last week, and the head coach says he’s “moving on” with the Buffalo Bills coming to town.

“Nothing catches me off guard,” Vrabel said. “Talk to Ty, that would be the best thing for you guys (the media) to do. He informed us that he was going to retire, and that’s what he did so… talk to Ty.”

As far as the signing of Williamson goes, Vrabel says the 29-year-old will provide depth at inside linebacker and has the ability to be an impact run defender who can make decisions quickly on the field.

“Just provide depth, provide depth at that position,” Vrabel said. “Avery’s played a lot of football — winning football — so we’ll kind of see where that is, see how quickly he gets caught up to speed.”

Williamson could make his debut 2021 debut with the Titans on Monday night when they host the Bills.

Titans designate Amani Hooker to return from IR among 4 moves

The Titans also confirmed the signing of LB Avery Williamson.

The Tennessee Titans are one step closer to getting their starting safety back, as the team announced it has designated Amani Hooker to return from Injured Reserve.

Hooker has been on the list since after the Week 1 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Now, the clock begins on his 21-day window to return to practice and be activated. He won’t count towards the active roster until that happens.

In other news, the Titans made official the signing of inside linebacker Avery Williamson off of the Denver Broncos’ practice squad.

Williamson, who was originally drafted by the Titans in the fifth round of the 2014 NFL draft and is from Milan, Tennessee, confirmed the move in a tweet on Tuesday night.

Tennessee also made a pair of signings to its practice squad, adding defensive lineman Kyle Peko and inside linebacker Dylan Cole. Peko was with the team during training camp and in the preseason before suffering an injury.

The Denver Broncos’ practice squad made four roster moves on Tuesday as general manager George Paton continues to revise the bottom of the roster. Here’s a quick recap of the team’s recent transactions.

Avery Williamson shares reaction to reuniting with Titans

Avery Williamson’s return to the Titans is a homecoming in more ways than one.

The Tennessee Titans brought home a familiar face on Tuesday, as the team is reportedly set to sign former fifth-round pick and inside linebacker, Avery Williamson.

Williamson was taken by the Titans with the No. 151 overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft and spent the first four seasons of his career in Nashville, starting in 59 of 63 games.

But Williamson’s return is a homecoming in more ways than one, as the 29-year-old is a native of Milan, Tennessee.

On Tuesday night, Williamson took to Twitter with a brief message, which confirmed that he was indeed coming back to the Titans.

“Glad to be home,” Williamson wrote.

The addition of Williamson gives the Titans another solid run defender, which is something this team needs after getting torched for nearly 200 rushing yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 5.

Adding to that, inside linebacker Jayon Brown is on Injured Reserve, so at bear bones minimum Tennessee needed more depth.

However, with Williamson’s experience as a starter, it’s very possible he could push for more than just depth snaps, especially if fellow linebacker Rashaan Evans continues his up-and-down play.

Williamson could make his 2021 debut on Monday night, when the Titans host the Buffalo Bills at Nissan Stadium.

Titans signing ILB Avery Williamson off Broncos’ practice squad

The Titans are reuniting with a familiar face in ILB Avery Williamson.

According to multiple reports, the Tennessee Titans are signing inside linebacker Avery Williamson off of the Denver Broncos’ practice squad.

If Williamson sounds like a familiar name, it’s because he is. The Kentucky product was a fifth-round pick of the Titans back in 2014 and spent the first four seasons of his career with the team, appearing in 63 games (59 starts).

After his first stint in Nashville, Williamson joined the New York Jets, where he spent three years, one of which saw him miss the season due to a torn ACL suffered in training camp.

In 2020, Williamson played in seven games for Gang Green before being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he finished out the season.

The 29-year-old was signed to the Broncos’ practice squad earlier this month but has yet to play in a game. He adds some much-needed experience to Tennessee’s linebacker corps. after Jayon Brown was placed on IR.
