On this day: Wilkins and Hondo go for 43 – 31 years apart; Yabu born

On this day, two Celtics scored 43 points in games separated by 31 years, and former Boston big man Guerschon Yabusele was born.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, Hall of Fame big man Dominique Wilkins scored 43 points in a 112-109 win over the Houston Rockets back in 1994 as The Human Highlight Reel put on a show for the ages on the same day another Celtics star did three decades and a year prior to the day (more on that later).

The huge game for Wilkins came on the road against the eventual NBA Champions at The Summit, their home arena in Houston. The Paris, France native’s full stat line for the night was 43 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal, with 7 turnovers and 5 personal fouls across 41 minutes of playing time.

The Georgia product shot 16-of-27 from the floor overall, and a sizzling 5-of-6 from 3, going 6-of-9 from the charity stripe in the eighth-most points Wilkins ever scored in a game.

On this day: Hondo, Yabu, Swartz, Minor debut; Mikan born; Reed passes; Antoine Walker, Paul Silas trades

On this day in Celtics history, John Havlicek, Dan Swartz, Mark Minor, and Guerschon Yabusele debuted, Antoine Walker and Paul Silas were traded, Ed Mikan was born, and Justin Reed left us.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, legendary Celtics small forward and future Hall of Famer John Havlicek played the very first game of his storied career with Boston in 1962.

An alum of the Ohio State’s Buckeyes men’s basketball program, Hondo — as Havlicek was sometimes called — had been selected ninth overall in that year’s NBA draft and played a major role for the team from the very first moment he played in the league, gracing the floor for 25 minutes of game time in his inaugural performance. That game happened to be a 149-116 obliteration of the New York Knicks, though Havlicek had a modest stat line in it.

The Martin’s Ferry native logged 6 points and 4 assists in the win.

Who are the best international players to play for the Boston Celtics?

From Charlie Hoefer to Alaa Abdenaby to Rick Fox to Kristaps Porzingis, there has been no shortage of players who were born abroad who have worn the green and white.

The Boston Celtics are a storied franchise for more than just their titles. They have been a trailblazing team in terms of signing and fielding players from all over the world, a philosophy that started in their first season.

From Charlie Hoefer to Alaa Abdelnaby to Rick Fox to Kristaps Porzingis, there has been no shortage of players born abroad who have worn the green and white.

But who were the best and who were the worst? What criteria should we use to judge them across eras? In the spirit of the annual arrival of #RankingSeason, the thing to do is try.

And try the hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” did on a recent episode.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear how they assessed the international Celtics of all time.

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 30

Today’s installment focuses on the 14 players who wore No. 30 over the years as of August 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 14 players who wore No. 30 over the years as of August 2023.

On this day: Ray Allen born; Theis, Yabu, Wesley signed; Moore dealt; Waldron passes

On this day, ex-Celtic champ Ray Allen was born, Daniel Theis, Guerschon Yabusele, Davis Wesley signed, and E’Twaun Moore was traded.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, champion Celtics sharpshooter Ray Allen was born in Merced, California. A military kid, Allen “grew up” in a lot of places, but would graduate high school in Dalzell, South Carolina. He attended the University of Connecticut for college, where he won Big East and UPI Player of the Year awards in 1996 during his time with the Huskies.

He would end up being drafted fifth overall in the 1996 NBA draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, but was quickly dealt to the Milwaukee Bucks in a draft-night trade, and would remain in Milwaukee for parts of seven seasons.

He would also play for the Seattle Supersonics for 5 campaigns before being dealt to the Celtics in the summer of 2007.

On this day: McHale, Embry, Thompson inducted; Brown, Moore drafted

On this day, Kevin McHale, Wayne Embry, and John Thompson were inducted into the Hall of Fame, and Jaylen Brown and E’Twaun Moore were drafted.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, franchise legends Kevin McHale, Wayne Embry, and John Thompson were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. McHale had been drafted by the Celtics out of the University of Minnesota with the third overall pick of the 1980 NBA draft.

That deal for that pick, which Boston had acquired along with big man Robert Parish in exchange for the top overall pick of that draft, was widely considered to be one of the most lopsided deals in league history. McHale would have an immediate impact on the young core being built around forward phenomenon Larry Bird.

Along with Parish, forward Cedric Maxwell, point guard Dennis Johnson and shooting guard Danny Ainge, the Celtics would form a dynasty he would win three championships with in the 1980s.

Former Celtic Guerschon Yabusele on playing for Real Madrid, his time in the NBA

Yabu has been forging a solid career for himself playing in Europe since leaving the NBA.

In recent days, former Boston Celtics big man Guerschon Yabusele has been in the news for all of the wrong reasons.

He was the focal point in a massive brawl between EuroLeague teams Real Madrid and KK Partizan. But the former No. 16 pick has been forging a solid career for himself in Europe since leaving the NBA, an experience he recently sat down with the folks from the Swish Culture “Role Player” podcast.

The Dancing Bear — as Yabusele is called — also touched on what it was like to play in the Chinese Basketball Association for a season while stashed and waiting to join the Celtics in the NBA, and how much of a challenge it was for him as a foreign player.

Check out the clip embedded above to get a look at how Yabu is doing these days when he’s not locked in mortal combat with players from other teams to see a gentler side of the French forward.

Celtics Lab 185: Boston (finally!) advances to face Philly; what we need to know with Ky Carlin

Will Embiid be ready? And for that matter, will a Celtics team that struggled against Atlanta be prepared for a steep step up in competition?

The Boston Celtics did their job and put away the Atlanta Hawks on the road in Game 6 to advance to the 2023 Eastern Conference Playoffs’ second round on Thursday night. Now, they will face the Philadelphia 76ers as Philly tries to get injured MVP candidate Joel Embiid ready in time for Game 1, set to tip off on Monday, May 1.

Will Embiid be ready? And for that matter, will a Celtics ball club that struggled against the Atlanta Hawks at times be prepared for a steep step up in competition? How will the Sixers face their own spike in the quality of their opponent from one round to the next after dispatching the Brooklyn Nets in just four games?

On this episode of the CLNS Media “Celtics Lab” podcast, your usual hosts link up with Sixers Wire general editor Ky Carlin to get up to speed on all things 76ers, as well as a quick look back at the Hawks series and some news catch up as Celtics alumni abroad are getting into trouble on the court.

Ex-Celtics big man Guerschon Yabusele apologizes for Dante Exum bodyslam in Partizan-Real Madrid fight

“I deeply regret my behavior at last night’s game,” wrote Yabusele on his Instagram after the loss.

Former Boston Celtics big man Guerschon Yabusele has apologized for an incident in which he bodyslammed fellow former NBAer Dante Exum in the middle of an on-court fight between EuroLeague teams Partizan and Real Madrid on Thursday that resulted in a ruptured tendon and chipped tooth for the latter, per USA TODAY’s Tom Schad.

“Euroleague Basketball strongly condemns the events that happened at the end of the game,” said the league in a statement after the contest was called in favor of Partizan after neither team had the minimum number of players available after the ejections caused by the bench-clearing fight.

“I deeply regret my behavior at last night’s game,” wrote Yabusele on his Instagram after the loss. “Basketball is about sportsmanship and friendship.”

“My sincere apologies to Partizan, a club with which we have always had a great relationship, to Dante Exum and his family, to my teammates, my club, and all the fans.”

“Exum could have broken his spine, seriously injured his head and ended his career,” shared Partizan team doctor Moma Jakovljević, who called for Yabusele’s permanent ejection from the league for the act.

Dante Exum was injured by a Guerschon Yabusele body slam during massive EuroLeague brawl

Exum suffered a ruptured tendon in his second toe.

Dante Exum and Guerschon Yabusele, two former NBA players, were involved in a massive brawl during a EuroLeague playoff match.

Exum, who was selected No. 5 overall in the 2014 NBA Draft, now plays for Partizan Belgrade. Yabusele, drafted No. 16 in 2016, now suits up for Real Madrid.

When the two teams faced each other on Thursday, the two teams got chippy late in the fourth quarter. While the altercation began with shoving following a foul by Sergio Llull on Kevin Punter, it quickly escalated when Yabusele body-slammed Exum.

You can watch a full video of the brawl below, but it wasn’t pretty and not what you want to see when you watch sports. The game was fully suspended following the incident. Both clubs were fined for unsportsmanlike conduct.

OK, that was a lot to process. But it didn’t look fun for anyone involved. Let’s try to piece together what happened.

In addition to Exum, former NBA player Dzanan Musa was shoved to the floor by Mathias Lessort.

But the most critical moment was the body slam from Yabusele.

If you didn’t originally catch it, here is a more zoomed-in video:

YIKES.

Once everything settled down, meanwhile, Exum could only get off the floor because he had assistance from his teammates and team medical staff.

That body slam clearly made a serious impact on Exum.

Unfortunately for the Australian guard, he had to leave the WiZink Center in Madrid on crutches.

Partizan’s doctor, Moma Jakovljevic, revealed that Exum suffered a ruptured tendon in his second toe. The doctor, who described it as a “serious” injury, said Exum also suffered an upper lip injury.

Yabusele posted on Instagram and apologized to Exum, who will likely miss the remainder of the series with the injured toe.

Yabusele was hit with a 5-game suspension for his actions.

Punter received a 2-game suspension, Lessort received a 1-game suspension, and Gabriel Deck received a 1-game suspension as well.

The decisions are not subject to appeal.
