On this day: Larry Bird scores triple-double vs. Detroit; Alaa Abdelnaby trade

On this day, Boston Celtics icon Larry Bird scored a triple-double against the Detroit Pistons, and the team traded Jon Barry for Alaa Abdelnaby.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, Hall of Fame small forward Larry Bird put up a triple-double against the Detroit Pistons in 1982. It came in a 119-112 win over the Pistons on the road in the Pontiac Silverdome, just to make things a little more difficult.

The Hick from French Lick — as Bird was often called for a nickname — scored 30 points, 16 rebounds, and a dozen assists on the night, connecting on 13 of his 26 total attempts from the floor that evening and converting 4 of his 5 shot attempts from the charity stripe successfully.

Bird did not take even one 3-pointer, making the triple-double even more impressive.

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 4

Today’s installment focuses on the 30 players who wore No. 4 over the years as of September 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history or interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 30 players who wore No. 4 over the years as of September 2023.

Who are the best international players to play for the Boston Celtics?

From Charlie Hoefer to Alaa Abdenaby to Rick Fox to Kristaps Porzingis, there has been no shortage of players who were born abroad who have worn the green and white.

The Boston Celtics are a storied franchise for more than just their titles. They have been a trailblazing team in terms of signing and fielding players from all over the world, a philosophy that started in their first season.

From Charlie Hoefer to Alaa Abdelnaby to Rick Fox to Kristaps Porzingis, there has been no shortage of players born abroad who have worn the green and white.

But who were the best and who were the worst? What criteria should we use to judge them across eras? In the spirit of the annual arrival of #RankingSeason, the thing to do is try.

And try the hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” did on a recent episode.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear how they assessed the international Celtics of all time.

12 Boston Celtics included in HoopsHype ‘best player in country history’ list

Let’s take a look at which Boston alumni made the cut — and what countries they hail from.

The Boston Celtics are a founding member and the most storied ball club of the league now known as the NBA, having been among the handful of teams from the era of the Basketball Association of America (BAA) days as the precursor league that would grow into today’s NBA was called.

So it should not surprise that the players who have worn the green and white over the nearly eight decades of existence of the franchise have at times been among the best to play the game anywhere in the world. In fact, there is a notable number of Celtics alumni present in a HoopsHype assessment of the best players to come from specific countries around the globe.

Let’s take a look at which Boston alumni made the cut — and what countries they hail from.

On this day: Jackson, Abdelnaby sign; West, Hankinson, Tatum born

On this day, former Celtics Demetrius Jackson and Alaa Abdelnaby signed, and Delonte West, Phil Hankinson, and Earl Tatum were born.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, former franchise point guard Demetrius Montell Jackson Jr. was signed to a multi-year deal after being drafted in the second round with the 45th overall pick of the 2016 NBA draft.

A product of the University of Notre Dame, Jackson played in the Las Vegas and Utah Summer Leagues that summer, putting up promising numbers ahead of his rookie season with the Celtics. He would spend the bulk of his inaugural season with Boston’s G League developmental affiliates — the (Portland) Maine Red Claws (now, Celtics) — appearing in five regular-season games with the parent club as well.

The South Bend, Indiana native would average just 2 points per game over that stretch, however, and would be waived and stretched at the end of the season.

On this day: Pierce, Jefferson, Allen, Bradley drafted; Jones born

On this day, the Boston Celtics drafted Paul Pierce, Al Jefferson, Tony Allen, and Avery Bradley; it is also the birthday of Celtics legend Sam Jones.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the 1998 NBA draft was held in General Motors Place in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and in it, the Celtics took only one player of note. The Celtics selected forward Paul Pierce out of Kansas with the 10th overall pick of the draft, a team the Californian was no fan of as a youth.

Even casual fans know the legacy of “the Truth” — as he was dubbed by future teammate Shaquille O’Neal in 2001 — has had on the franchise. An instrumental part of the 2008 title that brought Boston its league-record 17th championship, the Oakland native racked up a finals MVP for that series as well.

Over the course of his career with the Celtics, Pierce amassed 10 All-Star and four All-NBA elections, All-Rookie First Team, election to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, and several other honors

Sixers broadcast crew of Marc Zumoff, Alaa Abdelnaby tied for 13th best

The Philadelphia 76ers broadcast crew gets their ranking for the 2019-20 season.

With the season set to resume in Orlando beginning on July 30 in the league’s designated “bubble site” at Disney World after being in suspension for three months, it has given a lot of people time to get things done.

For example, it has given The Athletic a chance to perform their broadcasters survey where they ask fans to vote on each broadcasting team and they then rank them based on the votes. This is in an effort to find out the best League Pass team to watch.

The Philadelphia 76ers broadcast team of Marc Zumoff and Alaa Abdelnaby do a terrific job for NBC Sports Philadelphia and they were ranked in the top half of the league’s broadcast teams. They came in tied for 13th with the Los Angeles Lakers team of Bill Macdonald and Stu Lantz.

The Atheltic on Zumoff and Abdelnaby:

Marc Zumoff is a fantastic play-by-play announcer, often painting a great picture for you even with the game right in front of your face. Former NBA player Alaa Abdelnaby is a lot of fun, in my opinion, but he also seemed to be polarizing in the responses.

The Sixers broadcast crew will get their chance to resume activity beginning on July 30 when the season gets set to return. [lawrence-related id=33248,33232,33222]
