Former Wisconsin Badgers forward sets EuroLeague record

Former Wisconsin Badgers forward Nigel Hayes-Davis set a new EuroLeague record with 50 points in a game Friday.

Playing for Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, Hayes-Davis put on a show against ALBA Berlin, leading his team to a 103-68 victory. He surpassed Shane Larkin’s record of 49 points, setting a new all-time mark for a Turkish Airlines EuroLeague game.

“I had it written in my notes at the beginning of the season that I wanted to break the scoring record this year,” Hayes-Davis said after his 50-point outing.

He finished 18-for-27 from the field while nailing nine three-pointers on 16 attempts, also chipping in five free throws on seven tries in the dominant performance.

Euroleague players who could move to the NBA this summer

HoopsHype presents ten players from the EuroLeague who could sign deals in the NBA in the upcoming offseason.

This season, Euroleague teams made significant strides by signing high-profile players from the NBA, such as Jabari Parker, Kendrick Nunn, and PJ Dozier. Amidst this rising level of competition, several Euroleague players have emerged as potential candidates to make the opposite trip to the NBA this upcoming summer.

Here are nine of them. (Some of them may be familiar to you already).

Basketball Twitter reacts to Mike James becoming Euroleague’s all-time leading scorer: ‘Two James at the top of NBA and Euroleague’

AS Monaco guard Mike James made history by passing Greek legend Vassilis Spanoulis to become the Euroleague’s all-time leading scorer with 4,457 points. Here’s how NBA Twitter reacted to James breaking the scoring record.

Playing abroad, two Boston Celtics alumni approach the Euroleague from different perspectives

Kemba Walker and Jabari Parker are embarking on EuroLeague careers with very different perspectives on what they are leaving behind.

When a prominent player in the NBA ends up at a stage of his career where he ends up playing overseas, one of two responses seems to be the outcome — embracing a new opportunity, or dwelling on the loss of an old one. And for a pair of Boston Celtics alumni and former teammates currently suiting up for EuroLeague ball clubs, one can see a bit of both.

Former star Celtics floor general and UConn standout Kemba Walker has left the Association to play for AS Monaco in the (mostly) French LNB Pro-A and EuroLeague, while mostly unsuccessful reclamation project and 2014 second overall pick Jabari Parker is playing for FC Barcelona in Spain’s ACB and the EuroLeague as well.

Asked why he elected to come to Europe by EuroHoops’ Alex Molina, Parker did not mince words; “I just want to be a part of something legitimate.”

Dominique Wilkins on leaving the Boston Celtics, NBA to play in Greece

The Human Highlight Film became the highest-paid athlete in Europe.

Boston Celtics Hall of Fame forward Dominique Wilkins made a significant career move in 1995 when he left the  Celtics to play for a Greek basketball team. This decision was driven by a combination of factors, including a lockout year in the NBA disrupting the subsequent season and an irresistible offer from Panathinaikos, his Greek ball club.

The Human Highlight Film became the highest-paid athlete in Europe, earning more than both soccer and basketball players in the region. The allure of Greece was not only the generous paycheck but also the opulent lifestyle he experienced. Wilkins lived in a magnificent mansion with gold toilets and marble floors, a stark contrast to the typical athlete accommodations in the United States.

The Paris native recently sat down with DJ Vlad to talk about his experiences playing overseas on his “Vlad TV” podcast.

Atlanta’s Bogdan Βοgdanovic on former Celtics Kemba Walker, Juancho Hernangomez joining EuroLeague teams

The Atlanta Hawks wing spoke at length about the trend in a recent interview with Eurohoops.

With former Boston Celtics Kemba Walker, Juancho Hernangomez, Tacko Fall and Mfiondu Kabengele electing to take their talents overseas in recent weeks, the opportunities for former Boston players who can’t find the right spot in the NBA anymore have increasingly come into focus.

And it is not just Celtics fans taking note of the phenomena. Atlanta Hawks wing Bogdan Βοgdanovic spoke at length about the trend in a recent interview with Eurohoops. The Hawks star spoke about Walker joining Monaco and Bo Cruz’s move to Greece’s Panathinaikos, which he frames as a testament to the competitiveness of the EuroLeague in recent years.

To hear the talk about the recent spate of former Celtics heading abroad in the interview with Βοgdanovic for yourself, check out the clip embedded below.

Former Celtic Jabari Parker agrees to deal with FC Barcelona

Former No.2 overall pick Jabari Parker is headed to FC Barcelona on a one-year deal.

Former Boston Celtics forward Jabari Parker is taking his talents overseas and will sign a one-year deal with FC Barcelona of Spanish Liga ACB and the EuroLeague. The No. 2 pick in the 2014 NBA draft is set to earn an estimated $2 million, and, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the deal includes an NBA opt-out clause.

Injuries have been a persistent problem for the 28-year-old Parker. He suffered two torn ACLs in the same knee during his first few seasons in the league. When he signed with the Celtics in April of 2021, Parker had bounced around the league. His time in the Hub had a few moments; Parker had a solid stint with the Celtics in a limited bench role. Boston waived Parker in January 2022.

Parker was most recently a member of the Milwaukee Bucks’ 2023 summer league roster before signing with FC Barcelona. Like fellow former Celtic  Kemba Walker, the move to play in Europe could be an opportunity to showcase his game and continue his journey as a professional basketball player.

Former Celtic Kemba Walker signs with EuroLeague’s AS Monaco Basket

Kemba Walker is taking his talents to Monte-Carlo.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8222″]

Former Boston Celtics point guard Kemba Walker is taking his talents overseas, signing a one-year deal with AS Monaco Basket. The 33-year-old becomes one of the biggest American names in EuroLeague after 12 seasons in the NBA.

Walker joined the Celtics in the summer of 2019 as a free agent following an All-NBA campaign with the Charlotte Hornets, the club that drafted him with the No. 9 pick in 2011. Walker made a big impact with the Celts, though injuries plagued the guard. For example, he missed four of Boston’s five postseason games during his final season in green. Following a few underwhelming mercenary stints elsewhere in the NBA in recent years, Walker now has a chance to make an international splash.

AS Monaco has been around since 1928, but the club is on the rise. In ’21-22, the team made its debut in EuroLeague after years of competing at lower levels of the European professional basketball circuit. Walker gives AS Monaco a chance to improve even further. Best of luck, Kemba!

Anonymous NBA staffer thinks Yam Madar could help the Boston Celtics in the right role

“He could handle a role of some kind,” they suggested. “He does need to play to keep developing, though”

How do people on the inside of the NBA see the future of Euroleague standout Yam Madar with the Boston Celtics? According to recent reporting from Heavy’s Sean Deveney, better than you might think. The Israeli floor general certainly has some warts on his game to work on, but the feedback Deveney got from an anonymous league staffer hints the EuroLeague Best Young Player. “There are some similarities to (Payton) Pritchard, but for the most part, Madar is smaller physically, more athletic but not as tough,” they shared.

“(T)hat is the big thing he would have to show in the NBA, that he can take the physicality,” continued the unnamed staffer. “He can shoot. He can be an NBA-caliber shooter and he is a decent enough playmaker, he has gotten better there. Not great defensively, though, and that is what got Pritchard benched.”

“But as a cheap option to have on the bench, the 11th man? You could do worse.”

“He could handle a role of some kind,” they suggested. “He does need to play to keep developing, though, you don’t want him to rot on the bench. He is 22, he is not some long-term project anymore.”

“If you bring him over, you’ve got to play him,” observed the unnamed staffer, perhaps hinting at the biggest obstacle (at least, on this version of the Celtics) yet remaining for a Madar NBA debut.

Ex-Celtics big man Guerschon Yabusele apologizes for Dante Exum bodyslam in Partizan-Real Madrid fight

“I deeply regret my behavior at last night’s game,” wrote Yabusele on his Instagram after the loss.

Former Boston Celtics big man Guerschon Yabusele has apologized for an incident in which he bodyslammed fellow former NBAer Dante Exum in the middle of an on-court fight between EuroLeague teams Partizan and Real Madrid on Thursday that resulted in a ruptured tendon and chipped tooth for the latter, per USA TODAY’s Tom Schad.

“Euroleague Basketball strongly condemns the events that happened at the end of the game,” said the league in a statement after the contest was called in favor of Partizan after neither team had the minimum number of players available after the ejections caused by the bench-clearing fight.

“I deeply regret my behavior at last night’s game,” wrote Yabusele on his Instagram after the loss. “Basketball is about sportsmanship and friendship.”

“My sincere apologies to Partizan, a club with which we have always had a great relationship, to Dante Exum and his family, to my teammates, my club, and all the fans.”

“Exum could have broken his spine, seriously injured his head and ended his career,” shared Partizan team doctor Moma Jakovljević, who called for Yabusele’s permanent ejection from the league for the act.
