All the Boston Celtics’ All-Star Week contest wins in NBA history

The Celtics are among the league’s leading teams when it comes to the Skills Challenge, Dunk Contest, and 3-point shootout.

In the spirit of the 2024 NBA All-Star Week festivities currently underway in the city of Indianapolis, Indiana, we lean on an account by our sister site HoopsHype of which team’s players have won the most All-Star Week contests over the years.

The Dunk Contest, Skills Challenge, and 3-Point Contest may not be the focal point of the annual gathering of NBA stars and rising prospects held by the NBA each winter. But they are an integral part of All-Star Week festivities just the same, and over the course of the league’s history of having such competitions, the Celtics rank quite high in winning them.

Let’s take a look at those won by Boston Celtics over the years.

How each of the Boston Celtics’ 4 historical Dunk Contest participants fared

Check out the impressive visual history of Celtics in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

For a contest that has been part of the NBA All-Star Week goings-on for nearly 30 years, you’d think there would have been more Boston Celtics participants than four by 2024, and with Jaylen Brown entering this year’s, there will soon be five. But it has been one aspect of the official All-Star events where the Celtics have been chronically under-represented.

But despite the paucity of Celtic participants over the years, there have been some pretty spectacular flushes across the decades, some of them sharing not only the uniform of Brown, but even the same last name on the jersey.

Let’s take a look at the dunkers, dunks, and how they did.

On this day: Bird hits 1st All-Star 3; Edwards traded; Green debut

On this day in Celtics history, Larry Bird hit the 1st 3 in All Star history, Blue Edwards was traded and Gerald Green debuted for Boston.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, a rookie and future Celtics Hall of Famer made history as legendary small forward Larry Bird scored the very first 3-point shot in the history of the All-Star Game, in a contest that was played at the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland in 1979.

The Hick from French Lick (as Bird was sometimes called as a nickname by his fans with affection) hit the shot in the corner during the extra period of the Eastern Conference’s 144-136 overtime win over the West. It was all the sweeter as Bird managed to do it while facing off against his career-long rival, former Michigan State Spartan and then-Los Angeles Laker Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

The Indiana State product’s record-setting trey was part of his overall 7-point, 6-rebound, 7-assist performance in the first of a dozen All-Star appearances.

On this day: Celtics deal for Olowokandi; Green, Brooks, Williams born

On this day in Celtics history, the team traded for Michael Olowokandi, and Sly Williams, MarShon Brooks, and Gerald Green were born.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the storied franchise sent wing Ricky Davis, center Mark Blount, guard Marcus Banks, forward Justin Reed, and two second-round picks from the Celtics to the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2006.

In exchange for the package of player contracts and draft assets coming from the Celtics, Boston received forward Wally Szczerbiak, big man Michael Olowokandi, power forward Dwayne Jones, and a first-round draft pick. Relatively uneventful as far as impact on the organization in the short term, the trade would have been a footnote in team history except for the fact that it set the stage for the deal which would bring Ray Allen.

And through that move, Kevin Garnett, to Boston the following year.

Rockets, Fertitta family unveil renovations to Houston hoops court

The Rockets and the family of owner Tilman Fertitta partnered with several Houston entities to renovate the Highland Park basketball court.

The Rockets and the family of owner Tilman Fertitta recently partnered with the Memorial Hermann Health System and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department for renovations at the Highland Park basketball court, which were unveiled on Dec. 30.

The renovations included repairs and improvements to both the pavilion and the court, including the addition of new basketball goals.

This initiative marks the team’s second collaboration with Memorial Hermann to revitalize courts. According to the team, it reflects their organizational commitment to enrich lives by improving courts and community centers in underserved communities.

After a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the upgraded court, second-year forward Tari Eason and former player Gerald Green hosted a basketball clinic for youth from the Houston Parks and Recreation Department’s afterschool enrichment program. Photos and videos of the various events are available below.

The pavilion and court renovations at Highland Park were made possible through contributions by the Rockets’ Clutch City Foundation, Memorial Hermann’s Community Benefit Corporation, and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department.

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 5

Today’s installment focuses on the 21 players who wore No. 5 over the years as of September 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

On this day: KG dealt to Boston; Larkin, Collins signed; Pruitt waived

On this day in 2007, the Boston Celtics traded Al Jefferson, Ryan Gomes, Sebastian Telfair, Gerald Green, Theo Ratliff, cash, and draft considerations for Kevin Garnett.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the storied franchise would trade for Minnesota Timberwolves star big man Kevin Garnett ahead of the 2007-08 season that would end in hanging Banner 17. The Big Ticket had initially been reluctant to agree to sign an extension with the Celtics should they deal for him given the dearth of high-level talent on the roster save for forward Paul Pierce.

But, a move that brought sharpshooting UConn product Ray Allen on board earlier that summer was tantalizing enough for Garnett to seal the deal. KG would agree to sign a three-year extension to add to the two remaining seasons on his existing contract.

The history-altering deal was consummated soon after.

On this day: Reggie Lewis dies; Brown, Rozier, Green, Crowder signed

On this day, former Celtics forward Reggie Lewis died unexpectedly while working out due to a heart arrhythmia.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, rising franchise star Reggie Lewis would die unexpectedly after collapsing on a basketball court at Brandeis University while working out in the offseason in 1993.

Lewis, who had previously been diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat after another on-court collapse during the prior season, passed away after attempts by local police to resuscitate the Northeastern product were not successful. The 22nd overall pick of the 1987 NBA draft for the Celtics, Lewis was widely seen as a critical part of Boston’s future, and the bridge to a successful future after the Larry Bird – Kevin McHale – Robert Parish era.

Along with the loss of forward Len Bias in 1986, this was a major contributing cause to the team’s ‘wilderness era’ of mediocrity that would last more than a decade.
