On this day: McHale, Embry, Thompson inducted; Brown, Moore drafted

On this day, Kevin McHale, Wayne Embry, and John Thompson were inducted into the Hall of Fame, and Jaylen Brown and E’Twaun Moore were drafted.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, franchise legends Kevin McHale, Wayne Embry, and John Thompson were inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts. McHale had been drafted by the Celtics out of the University of Minnesota with the third overall pick of the 1980 NBA draft.

That deal for that pick, which Boston had acquired along with big man Robert Parish in exchange for the top overall pick of that draft, was widely considered to be one of the most lopsided deals in league history. McHale would have an immediate impact on the young core being built around forward phenomenon Larry Bird.

Along with Parish, forward Cedric Maxwell, point guard Dennis Johnson and shooting guard Danny Ainge, the Celtics would form a dynasty he would win three championships with in the 1980s.

Jaylen Brown on his journey from the NBA draft to the finals

You might have heard a version of this story, but not from the man himself.

The story of star Boston Celtics forward Jaylen Brown and his journey to the NBA has been told by many throughout his career, Each time documents his rise from a prospect in Georgia to the best player on the floor for the Celtics in the 2022 NBA Finals.

But few bother to include the fact Brown called his own number in regard to making the finals. And none has been told in his own words until now.

The NBA’s “Pass The Rock” podcast features the former Cal standout breaking down his path from Wheeler High School to nearly defeating the greatest dynasty in league history not put together by the Celtics.

Take a look at the clip embedded below to hear Brown’s journey to the pinnacle of the league’s biggest stage, directly from the mouth of the man himself.

Three Boston Celtics alumni on the move in 2016 NBA redraft

The ball club saw a small but significant bump for one of the three, a massive jump for another — and one of the trio fell out of the first round of the draft altogether.

The Boston Celtics saw several alumni on the move in a recent redraft of the 2016 NBA draft class that features star Celtics wing Jaylen Brown, super sixth man Malcolm Brogdon, and fan favorite swingman Guerschon Yabusele that was put together by Hoops Hype’s Frank Urbina and Raul Barrigon they frame as “the way it should have been in hindsight” given how few stars have come from this particular class.

The ball club saw a small but significant bump for one of the three, a massive jump for another — and one of the trio fell out of the first round of the draft altogether.

Let’s take a look at who they saw being taken where.

Celtics star wing Jaylen Brown cracks the top three of his draft class in 2022-23 global rating

It also pegs the Cal alum as the 41st-best player in the league so far this season.

NBA analyst Alberto De Roa of HoopsHype, our sister site, put together a new metric he dubbed global rating.

“(The metric) combines players’ and teams’ statistics to rank players according to their productivity on the court.”

It also factors in the number of contests a given player has been unavailable for in a season (for a more detailed breakdown, check this out).

For the 2022-23 NBA season so far, De Roa has not only used global rating to compare NBA players, but also how each draft class remaining in the league stacks up against its peers.

For the 2016 NBA draft class, star Boston Celtics wing Jaylen Brown is rated the third-best player from his draft class this season.

Trailing Dejounte Murray and Pascal Siakam but just ahead of Jakob Poeltl, the Georgia native is the 41st-best player in the league per the HoopsHype metric.
