Reacting to former Boston Celtics big man Aron Baynes putting up a 20-20 game in the NBL

Baynes has reemerged in the basketball spotlight with a spectacular 20-point, 20-rebound game in Australia’s NBL.

Former Boston Celtic big man Aron Baynes, known for his gritty style of play, has reemerged in the basketball spotlight with a spectacular 20-point, 20-rebound game in Australia’s NBL. This comes after a challenging period marked by a devastating injury that left Baynes temporarily unable to walk.

The injury occurred during a crucial match in the Australian Olympic men’s basketball team’s campaign at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Baynes, known for his rugged style of play, left the court for a restroom break during the third and fourth quarters. However, he was later found on the floor and it was revealed to be a spinal injury that temporarily paralyzed him.

Despite the odds, Aron Baynes has made a triumphant return to professional basketball, playing for the Brisbane Bullets in the NBL.

Every Boston Celtics jersey in team history worn by ONLY one player

This is every player in Celtics history who was the only player to wear their jersey number.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA does, and given that knowledge, it might surprise you that they have plenty of jerseys only worn by one player in the entire 75-year history of the team.

Of course, a few of them are among those retired jerseys, but quite a few of them are not. As we draw near to the end of the 2023 offseason series of every jersey ever worn by a Boston Celtics player in the regular season, we would of course be remiss if we skipped out on these loners.

Let’s take a look at those most unique of Celtics jerseys throughout the years.

Who are the best international players to play for the Boston Celtics?

From Charlie Hoefer to Alaa Abdenaby to Rick Fox to Kristaps Porzingis, there has been no shortage of players who were born abroad who have worn the green and white.

The Boston Celtics are a storied franchise for more than just their titles. They have been a trailblazing team in terms of signing and fielding players from all over the world, a philosophy that started in their first season.

From Charlie Hoefer to Alaa Abdelnaby to Rick Fox to Kristaps Porzingis, there has been no shortage of players born abroad who have worn the green and white.

But who were the best and who were the worst? What criteria should we use to judge them across eras? In the spirit of the annual arrival of #RankingSeason, the thing to do is try.

And try the hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” did on a recent episode.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear how they assessed the international Celtics of all time.

On this day: Celtics sign Baynes, Ojeleye, Mickey; Humphries traded

On this day, the Boston Celtics signed Aron Baynes, Semi Ojeleye, and Jordan Mickey, and traded Kris Humphries.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team signed Australian big man Aron Baynes in free agency to a one-year deal worth $4.3 million in 2017. All of Australia — as he was sometimes called — quickly became an invaluable part of the Celtics front line, known for his excellent defense and verticality as much as his unexpectedly solid 3-point shooting with the team.

A New Zealander by birth, Baynes played for the team for two seasons before he was dealt away to the Phoenix Suns in order to help make cap room for major roster reshuffling following the disastrous 2018-19 season (no fault of Aron’s, really).

The big man averaged 5.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while with the franchise.

Four Boston Celtics alumni shifting places in 2009 NBA redraft

Some Celtics alumni have improved their position considerably, while others have slipped a bit with the benefit of career hindsight.

The tag team duo of Hoops Hype NBA analysts Frank Urbina and Raul Barrigon are back at it again on our sister site with a new NBA redraft, this time focused on the 2009 NBA draft class with a number of Boston Celtics alumni on the move compared to where they were actually taken in the draft back on that fateful day in the summer of 2009.

And as has been the case in each prior re-draft we have taken note of from Hoops Hype, some Celtics alumni have improved their position considerably, while others have slipped a bit with the benefit of career hindsight.

Without further ado, let’s see which former or current Celtics players ended up where.

Boston big man alum Aron Baynes highlights with NBL’s Brisbane Bullets

Noticeably more svelte and mobile, Baynes looks like he’s still got it in a clip circulated by the NBL.

Former Boston Celtics big man Aron Baynes has been getting back at it in Australia and New Zealand’s National Basketball League (NBL – not to be confused with the NBA predecessor league). A scary injury in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics left Baynes partially paralyzed, requiring a lengthy rehab he only recently emerged from.

Noticeably more svelte and mobile, Baynes looks like he still has game in a clip circulated by the NBL that shows the former Boston big man during the Brisbane Bullets’ recent tilt against the New Zealand Breakers.

Baynes looked positively ecstatic to be back on the court, battling under the basket throwing up hook shots, and hitting 3-pointers with perhaps even greater fluidity than before his injury.

The onetime Celtics center has an out in his NBL deal to return to the NBA if a team wants to sign him, and it would not surprise us to see him playing ball back in the U.S. this season based on what we’re seeing here.

Former Celtics center Aron Baynes signs with NBL’s Brisbane Bullets

The one-time Boston big man can return to the NBA if a team comes calling, though.

Boston Celtics big man alumnus Aron Baynes is returning to professional basketball for the 2022-23 season. While it might not be in the league he was trying out for at the 2022 Las Vegas Summer League this month, it is a massive milestone for the veteran center who lost his ability to walk after a freak accident.

Baynes sustained a serious spinal injury in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and has spent the better part of a year working to get back on his feet — and after that, on a basketball court.

After a long, grueling road, Baynes will join the Brisbane Bullets, a pro team in Australia and New Zealand’s NBL, on a two-year deal with a provision that will let him return to the NBA, according to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.

The former Celtics center also had offers in Europe and Asia, but those teams would not have let him return to the NBA, which mattered to Baynes enough to choose the NBL instead.

Boston Celtics ‘checked on’ Aron Baynes but ‘don’t intend to sign’ him: report

Baynes is not an ideal target for Boston, it seems.

There is a very solid chance we will see former Boston Celtics big man Aron Baynes back in the NBA soon, but chances are it won’t be with the Celtics according to new reporting from the Boston Herald’s Adam Himmelsbach.

Per Himmelsbach, the Celtics “checked in on Aron Baynes’ situation but don’t intend to sign the veteran big man.” All of Australia has been working his way back from a scary spinal injury sustained at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics for some time now and made the trip to Las Vegas Summer League to work out for teams in hopes of returning to the NBA.

The Celtics do need a backup big man, but one who can play heavy minutes to help preserve veteran big man Al Horford and starting center Robert Williams III for the postseason.

The fact that Baynes has not played significant high-level basketball since his injury and perhaps concern regarding Baynes’ age and level of recovery could be among any of several reasons Boston might not want to go for a reunion with the former Celtics center.

We hope the Celtics fan favorite center can latch on with another team to complete his impressive effort to make it back to the Association — even if it is always odd to see him in a different uniform.

Should the Boston Celtics bring back veteran big man Aron Baynes?

Is Baynes an ideal fit for Boston’s aspirations?

Should the Boston Celtics bring back veteran big man Aron Baynes? On one hand, the former Celtics center is familiar with much of the team and plays not only the position but style of play that Boston is in need of for the coming season. On the other, Baynes has not played any high-level basketball since a serious spinal injury at the 2020 Olympics, and the Celtics will need whatever solution they elect for their backup center role to play heavy minutes for them in the coming 2022-23 campaign.

What direction should the team take with Baynes? Should they wait out the market in case a better option shakes free? Or should they roll the dice with an old friend after a similar Celtics frontcourt reunion paid off in a major way?

The host of the CLNS Media “Celtics Beat” podcast Evan Valenti debates this question with guest Brian Barrett of WEEI.

Watch the clip embedded above to hear what the duo has to say on the matter.
