Studs and duds from Commanders’ 35-33 win over Broncos

Several players were heroes for the Commanders in a 35-33 win over the Broncos.

When you are down 21-3 in an NFL game, there is lots of blame to go around. When you come back and win the game, there are many heroes. That’s the case for the Washington Commanders, who came from behind to defeat the Denver Broncos, 35-33, in Week 2 action.

As the Commanders fell behind 21-3, the defense was being beaten for big plays. Quarterback Sam Howell was holding the ball too long, and the offensive line was getting pounded like a drum.

All is true.

However, the Commanders came back, and it was a total team effort. We name our studs and duds from the win.

8 Broncos players have changed their jersey numbers

If KJ Hamler returns to the Broncos later this year, he will need a new jersey number: CB Tremon Smith has switched to No. 1.

Several Denver Broncos changed their jersey numbers on Monday.

Punter Riley Dixon, who wore No. 19 in preseason, switched to No. 9. Broncos receiver Marvin Mims, who wore No. 83 in preseason, then switched to No. 19.

Cornerback Tremon Smith also switched to No. 1 after wearing No. 23 in preseason. Cornerback Fabian Moreau, who wore No. 36 this summer, then switched to No. 23 (running back Tyler Badie remains No. 36).

Cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian, who previously wore No. 35, now wears No. 29. Defensive back Devon Key, who wore No. 38 in preseason, now wears No. 26 (running back Jaleel McLaughlin still wears No. 38).

Quarterback Ben DiNucci, who wore No. 6 this summer, now wears No. 11 (safety P.J. Locke still wears No. 6).

No. 1: CB Tremon Smith (previously 23)
No. 9: P Riley Dixon (previously 19)
No. 11: QB Ben DiNucci (previously 6)
No. 12: WR Tim Patrick (previously 81) [injured reserve]
No. 19: WR Marvin Mims (previously 83)
No. 23: CB Fabian Moreau (previously 36)
No. 26: DB Devon Key (previously 38)
No. 29: CB Ja’Quan McMillian (previously 35)

New practice squad players also received their numbers: WR Phillip Dorsett (No. 13), ILB Ben Niemann (No. 57), TE Lucas Krull (No. 85) and WR David Sills (No. 87).

Additionally, defensive lineman Tyler Lancaster is wearing No. 96. That’s not a new change — Lancaster switched from No. 62 to No. 96 after defensive lineman Eyioma Uwazurike was suspended indefinitely for gambling.

During the offseason, players are allowed to share numbers if they play on different sides of the ball (such as McLaughlin and Key both wearing No. 38 in preseason). With the regular season now right around the corner, though, numbers 0-99 can only be worn once on the 53-man roster and 17-player practice squad.

The Broncos are considered 4-point favorites against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 1. View the team’s full regular season schedule here.

Broncos made 6 roster moves on Thursday

After setting an initial 53-man roster on Tuesday, the Broncos made six more roster moves on Thursday.

After setting an initial 53-man roster on Tuesday, the Denver Broncos continued making roster moves on Thursday.

First, the team placed cornerback K’Waun Williams (ankle), defensive back P.J. Locke (leg) and offensive tackle Alex Palczewski (hand) on injured reserve. Those three players will now have to sit out at least the first four games of the 2023 season before being eligible to return to the active roster.

After placing those three players on IR, the Broncos re-signed defensive lineman Mike Purcell, cornerback Fabian Moreau and offensive lineman Quinn Bailey. Because they are veterans, those players did not have to pass through waivers after being cut by Denver on Tuesday.

See a recap of the team’s Thursday roster moves below.

Fabian Moreau adds depth and experience to Broncos’ secondary

“He’s smart, and he’s one of those players that you know exactly what you are getting,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said of CB Fabian Moreau.

After losing rookie cornerback Riley Moss for about four weeks following core muscle surgery, the Denver Broncos added more depth to the secondary by signing veteran cornerback Fabian Moreau.

Moreau, 29, has spent time with four NFL teams, most recently starting 11 games for the New York Giants last season.

“He played quite a bit of snap last year in New York,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said of Moreau. “He’s smart, and he’s one of those players that you know exactly what you are getting. I think there is a physicality to how he plays.

“He’s excelled in the kicking game, and he is someone who is smart. We’ve looked at him for a while now, and we’ve had a lot of good feedback from places he has been. He had a good visit, and his workout was good. We felt good him and especially good about his football IQ.”

Moreau has totaled 252 tackles, 35 pass breakups and six interceptions in 90 career games (45 starts). That kind of experience will be a welcomed addition to Denver’s cornerback room.

Broncos fill Tim Patrick’s former roster spot by signing CB Fabian Moreau

The Broncos will sign CB Fabian Moreau to fill the open roster spot after placing WR Tim Patrick on injured reserve.

The Denver Broncos are signing cornerback Fabian Moreau to a one-year contract, according to a report from NFL Network’s
Mike Garafolo
.

Moreau is being signed to fill the roster spot that will be created when the team places wide receiver Tim Patrick (Achilles) on injured reserve.

Moreau (6-0, 204 pounds) is a seventh-year cornerback who entered the NFL as a third-round pick out of UCLA with Washington in 2017. After four years in D.C., Moreau spent time with the Atlanta Falcons (2021), Houston Texans (2022) and New York Giants (2022).

Moreau has appeared in 90 games in his career, earning 45 starts. The 29-year-old cornerback has totaled 252 tackles, 35 pass breakups and six interceptions since 2017.

The Broncos previously worked out cornerback Mark Gilbert last month. Riley Moss, Denver’s third-round draft pick, has not been at practice the last two days for an undisclosed reason. The Moreau signing might have been made in part to provide more depth while Moss is sidelined.

5 free-agent CBs the Colts could sign to replace Isaiah Rodgers

Here a few veteran CBs the Colts could consider to replace Isaiah Rodgers.

The Indianapolis Colts cornerback room already had plenty of question marks entering the 2023 season, and now they’ll be without one of their projected starters.

Former sixth-round pick Isaiah Rodgers Sr. was poised to be one of the starting cornerbacks on the boundary entering the final year of his rookie deal, but he was waived following a suspension due to violating the league’s gambling policy.

The Colts used three of their 12 selections in the 2023 NFL draft at the cornerback position in the forms of Julius Brents (second round), Darius Rush (fifth round) and Jaylon Jones (seventh round). All have promising traits to be significant contributors.

But the Colts may need to look at the free-agent market to bring in some veteran experience considering Kenny Moore II is the only player in the room with more than four career starts in the NFL.

Without further ado, here are five veteran free-agent cornerbacks the Colts could consider signing to replace the recently departed Rodgers:

12 remaining free-agent cornerbacks the Panthers could still sign

Here are 12 notable cornerbacks who are still available in free agency:

On Wednesday, ESPN NFL insider Field Yates suggested that the Carolina Panthers add some cornerback depth before the offseason comes to an end. But let’s be honest, we really didn’t need a reminder.

Between injuries to starters Jaycee Horn and Donte Jackson as well as the lack of reliable reinforcements behind them, the Panthers are still quite thin at the position. So, if they end up dipping back into the free-agent market this summer, here are 12 corners that could get a call.

5 remaining Giants free agents who deserve to be re-signed or sign elsewhere

The New York Giants have 10 remaining unsigned free agents and these five deserve to be re-signed or given an opportunity elsewhere.

The first week of free agency has come and gone across the NFL, and the New York Giants have been quite busy.

In addition to re-signing several of their own in-house free agents, general manager Joe Schoen has also made a few splashes elsewhere. He’s added quality depth at positions of need and acquired tight end Darren Waller via trade.

But 10 Giants remain unsigned. They are as follows:

  • LB/S Landon Collins
  • DL Justin Ellis
  • OL Jon Feliciano
  • WR Richie James
  • LB/S Tony Jefferson
  • WR Marcus Johnson
  • CB Fabian Moreau
  • LB Jaylon Smith
  • DL Nick Williams
  • LB Oshane Ximines

There are some notable names in that group and five of them absolutely deserve to either be re-signed or signed elsewhere.

Let’s take a look at those players.

1 pending free agent the Eagles could target from each NFC team

With the legal tampering period and NFL league year fast approaching, we’re looking at 1 pending free agent the Eagles should target from each NFC team

The Eagles won’t be major players in the free-agent market, but it’s always fun to take a hypothetical look at one potential target from every team.

Philadelphia agreed to a deal with Brandon Graham on Friday but is expected to lose Javon Hargrave, Fletcher Cox, James Bradberry, and C.J. Gardner-Johnson — among others — to lucrative deals.

It was also announced that Darius Slay was granted permission to seek a trade, further clouding up a transition period for one of the NFL’s top defenses in 2022.

With the new league year fast approaching, here’s one pending free agent from each NFC team that the Birds should target.

Sign or pass: What Giants should do with pending free agents

Giants Wire takes an early look at the New York Giants’ in-house free agents and breaks down who should be re-signed and who should go.

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen is entering his second offseason with the club and after a roaring start, he’s ready to turn the Giants into perennial winners.

It won’t be easy. Like last year, Schoen will be faced with several difficult decisions when it comes to retaining players. It appears to be a foregone conclusion that quarterback Daniel Jones will be back but at what price is the only question.

Schoen suggested the team will let the ’emotion’ of this season die down before making key decisions because it’s never a good idea to ‘shop hungry.’

That aside, here is a quick list of impending free agents the Giants will have to make decisions on.
